BUMP with price reduction and a couple new photos. $2600 plus shipping.

Standover is 28.5 inches. This is as small as I think Riv's are made.

I am selling for my ex-wife a 48 mm Sam Hillborne. I purchased the frame
and built it up at a local shop. The bike has hardly been ridden since It
was built up. I am happy to share details and take any additional photos. I

Rich built wheels and dynamo hub but don't currently have a light on it. I

A question about the build: How did you get the Soma Highway One bars
thru a Nitto quill stem? I was under the impression these bars required an
open face stem due to the abrupt curves.

I like the 38s a lot. I don't have caliper to measure but didn't have an
issue on the rims. You can't go much wider with the tires though and the
frame.

On the bars, with the mustache I would definitely go short stem. I think so
much depends on body type am not sure I could say how it changes the bike.
I'll add some new photos once the storm passes.

[RBW] Re: Roadini heavy?

2022-01-28 Thread Jonathan D.
I agree with Bill's take but I often do. I have the Roadini, Rambouillet
and Roadeo. All ride great. The Roadeo is setup as a light road bike and
built up differently so hard to compare. The Roadini definitely reminds me
of the Romulus in feel, but also built in a similar way. On my Ram I can
run 35 mm tires with fenders but haven't tried not he Roadini. I would
probably choose my Ram over the Roadini but love the classic lugs and
orange. I tried selling the Roadini but didn't put much effort into it,
but only because all three is excessive.

I also love my BMC Monstercross and run got the disc with 42 mm tires in
pink. I wouldn't compare the bikes and I use them for different purposes
but can't go wrong with any BMC or Rivendell. The Model 0 BMC looks
awesome.

[RBW] Re: FS: Roadini 54 $1400

2021-09-30 Thread Jonathan D.
I might try to switch it to drops this weekend or next. I appreciate the
advice Bill. The stem is also currently to long for the Albastasche.

A couple of questions that came up:

The bike pictured currently has 38 mm Rene Here (Compass) tires. I think
it could easily fit 33s with Fenders.
My PBH is 85 and the bike fits well but on the small end for me. My 58 Ram
fits bigger.

Bumping. $1300. Also selling a Black Mountain Cycles 53 cm and Soma Grand

[RBW] WTT/WTB Rene Herse Barlow Pass for Bon John

2021-06-21 Thread Jonathan D.
I am looking for a Rene Herse Bon John tire. Would take a set but only
need one. I have a single Rene Herse Barlow Pass tire that is used but
great shape that I would trade or sell.

I can run 38s, and I am running 35s with fenders, but had help to make it
fit. 33s were no problem with fenders. I have an orange Ram.

2021-03-11 Thread Jonathan D.
I added some more photos and details of the bike. There are some small
scratches that I tried to capture. I would say the bike looks in very good
shape but it isn't pristine. Has the type of scratches, dirt you would
expect from a very well maintained bike used mostly on roads.

The picture of the saddle height is at 72 in one pic, at the request of
someone on the list. I forgot to measure standover but I would expect
81-82 cm. I'll drop the asking price to $2000. If I don't get anyone that
is interesting in a couple of weeks I'll think about selling a partial
build.

2021-03-09 Thread Jonathan D.
Bill is right. The bike looks like it was recently built up before I
bought it so it is great shape but I could be convinced to part it out. It
really just depends on price. I don't want to spend a lot of time selling
individual parts. The build is very Rivendell, and in great shape.

Bill,

I might sell the front rack. I'll email you if I do. I just need to see the
other rack options I have for a bike.

[RBW] Re: FS 56 MUSA Atlantis 650b Great Condition.

2021-03-02 Thread Jonathan D.
Thanks Doug. You are right it needs more information. I can't find the
MUSA Geometry chart but I am confident someone has it. I think it is
similar to the Toyo Atlantis but with longer chain stays - I want to say
47-48 mm for Waterford, versus 52 range for the new MIT version, and 45 for
the Toyo.

Here is an old listing that the previous bike mechanic posted I traded for
it. I traded a 58 Atlantis that Doug connected me with and I bought from
the list. I rode it maybe 200 miles since I traded for it, mostly because
of Covid and very little bike commuting.

It has Nitto Noodle bars, Shimano brakes, bar ends but not Shimano (can't
tell name), Origin Seatpost but probably have a Nitto and can look, Brooks
C17 but could trade it for a leather B17, Cx-70 Canti Brakes, Sugino Crank
triple, 9 speed cassette, Deore Rear derailleur, and Pasela 42 mm tires.
The Wheels are Velocity Atlas wheels, Atlas rims with Velocity Hubs.
Everything looks in great shape. I found one small paint chip on the top
tube and will add a picture when the sun is shining.

https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/2629426/

I would love to sell to someone local. These bikes are hard to price.
I'll drop to $2250 plus shipping. Happy to talk build and price. I don't
want to part out, because of the hassle of selling each part. I have
enough parts.

I am not in a rush to sell and if I don't sell this one, I might try
selling a 55 Joe Appaloosa or Some Grand Randeneur.

[RBW] FS 56 MUSA Atlantis 650b Great Condition

2021-03-01 Thread Jonathan D.
I decided I have too many bikes and need to sell at least one. This is a
really nice, great condition, typical Rivendell build. This is a MUSA
Atlantis, 650 B, size 56. My PBH is 85.5 and I fit. It might be a little
small. I was planning on keep the racks, but happy to consider including.

These bikes are hard to know what they are worth. I am not in a rush to
sell but wanted to put it out there. I am asking for $2500 plus shipping.
I will have it professionally packaged. I am happy to answer questions.

[RBW] Re: Gus Boots coming back?

2020-12-09 Thread Jonathan Stafford
This reply will show up wayyy too late to be helpful. But an email from Riv
gave an indication of available frames timeline.

   - Sam Hillbornes - around Halloween
   - Platypus frames - November
   - Appaloosas - early next year
   - Clem Ls - March or April
   - Charlie Gallops - sometime around Summer
   - Homers after that
   - Susie/Gus after that

Looks like it'll be a pretty long wait. Hopefully, the Susie will work for
you. Ditto to the above comment that the Susie has been upped in weight
class.

just Jonathan.

2020-11-30 Thread Jonathan Stafford
No experience, but seen some RBW members talk about these in the past w/
mixed reviews. cyclestoussaint 650B

I just went super cheapo with an Amazon StaTru set for under $100 shipped.
I do not expect much from them but they'll do fine until I get around to
building my new wheels. After that, I'll donate them to a local coop for
some 26" conversion thing or wheel truing lessons. Good luck!

[RBW] Re: In-kind donations for effective cycling advocacy

2020-10-23 Thread Jonathan Stafford
Hey Jay,

If your local bike advocacy group has a way for you to get involved that
means a lot to them - that's the in-kind gift that most bicycle advocacy
orgs appreciate most. Trust me, I work for one and if I had to choose the
monetary donation from parts you sold or having you phone bank for yearend
appeal, or getting a petition signed to increase roadway safety in
underserved areas...I'll take your time over your money all day!

As it relates to Riv's BRP pricing, maybe you could find your local Riv
dealer and make them the offer you thought to make Riv. Being intentional
about who you're willing to sell/donate your parts to is a lot easier at
the local level. Plus, you may already have a good relationship with the
shop and have a chance to meet some folks you otherwise may not have.

I'm just happy you're thinking deeply about how to be involved. If you
decide to sell here, I'll support your efforts by paying what you ask w/o
negotiation. But that's just me. Best of luck!

[RBW] Re: 650b Atlantis Sizing for an 85PBH

2020-10-12 Thread Jonathan D.
I have an 85 PBH and ride a 56 Waterford I am debating selling but not
because of fit. I also rode a 58 Toyo Atlantis. Both were great and I
would have gone just with wheel size. I would buy a 53 MIT and ride a 55

Thank you for sharing. He had some interesting posts. I agree with Brent and
would love to hear what others would read. I am heartened by how many folks
are speaking up right now about what is happening in this country and the

not one that involves the exploitation, abuse and dehumanization of human

Re: [RBW] Re: On Topic / Off Topic

2020-06-06 Thread Jonathan D.
Jim - thank you for all you do for this forum to keep it going. I do really
value it and the community. I also see how some threads digress and lose
civility and I don’t envy your role to manage that.

I don’t think Jan’s post was off topic or inappropriate though and I think the
Blahg is evidence of this. Rivendell’s values and mission align with the BLM
movement. There are years of systemic racism and sexism in bike culture and
history that Grant highlighted this week and many times before, and I hope we
can also continue to challenge this history wherever and whenever we can. I do
think there is a level of white privilege to expect to come to this forum and
not have to hear about what our neighbors face everyday just for being black or
brown, or gay, or trans, etc and be confronted with what is happening in this
world. I do think everyone should be expected to be civil to each other, be
respectful and at times let the thread stop.

Again thank you for all you do.

[RBW] Re: Real width of Schwalbe Big Ben tires and the effect with fenders.

2020-03-24 Thread Jonathan K.
The tires ride nice, but I've been wondering if they are making the bike
feel a little more sluggish than it could be. I switched to them very
shortly after getting the bike, and I didn't really notice much of a
difference compared to the stock Kendas. I've got over 3000 miles on them
now. No flats, which is good, but I've been thinking about trying something
a little more sporty like the G-One series or maybe even the Rene Herse
Antelope Hills.

I reached out to Walt since there seems to be a lot of interest. Here are the

experience.

I typically charge $100 for the frame (including the crossbrace between
seatstay/chainstay). Forks (if I think it's appropriate) are $75.

That doesn't include any repainting or shipping cost. I can powdercoat a
frameset for $250 in any color in the Prismatic catalog, though.

[RBW] Re: Real width of Schwalbe Big Ben tires and the effect with fenders.

2020-03-21 Thread Jonathan K.
I have an Appaloosa and made that same tire swap on mine. Mine is 700c, not
650b, but I'm not sure that makes a difference in terms of width/clearance.
I installed the widest SKS fenders Riv sells (B65 I think?) over the stock
Kendas. When I swapped to the 700x50 (2.0) Big Bens, I didn't need to mess
with the fenders at all. I have lots of clearance. The Big Bens measured
quite a bit undersize (on the stock Alex rims that came on the Riv-complete
Appaloosa).

[RBW] Re: Chacos vs. Bedrocks

2019-08-19 Thread Jonathan D.
Chacos have a high arches and thick soles. I tried them and the arch kills my
feet and I can’t wear them without getting leg pains. The Chacos are also
really heavy.

I tried the bedrock sandals and love them. The sole is thinner with zero drop.
The shoe is very light but doesn’t move on my foot and is substantial enough to
wear all day, including hiking, and light enough to forget I have them on. I
highly recommend the bedrock. I got them for my wife and she also loves them. I
know folks love Chacos but they don’t work work for me and the bedrocks were
amazing from day 1.

Re: [RBW] Re: Blahg Post Ethiopian Shoes

2019-08-16 Thread Jonathan Gutoff
They finally arrived after 13 weeks and, having worn them for about and
hour, I think they're pretty comfortable and they seem well made. If the
company were more realistic about there delivery time -- it was posted as
20 working days plus shipping when I ordered, and when last I looked it was
up to six weeks-- or more forthright in its communciation I'd be happy.
If, given the work load they have, it takes three months to get an order
fulfilled that's what it takes, but SoleRebels should tell whoever it is
planning on ordering their shoes, or who has ordered them, what's going on.

Another data point. Without having read the posts on this topic, I ordered
a pair on May 9 of this year, 2019, at which time the website listed time
to fulfillment as 20 working days plus extra time for shipping. The website

[RBW] Re: Quickie Velogical Review

2019-08-07 Thread Jonathan Gutoff
I have two Velogical generators, both ordered from directly from Germany.
One over four year ago, another three. In both cases the customer service
was really great. Both have been powering B Eycl front lights and
Toplight Plus rear lights without any problem in rain. There is some noise,
which, obviously, means some energy loss, but not much. Perhaps because I'm
not very sensitive, I can't notice any increased effort when the dynamo
engaged.
