Graham, I saw your other WTB post and thought I'd chime in. I have a
similar PBH (91) and ride a 64 Clem as my daily commuter and love it. It
fits great, so I think this would work for you. Hopefully it's still
avail.

[RBW] Trigger Shifter Question

2023-03-21 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I've always used friction shifters but am thinking about putting a trigger
shifter on a new cargo bike build. So apologies in advance if this is a
stupid question, but...Do you have to use the corresponding rear
derailleur/groupset for a particular shifter? Or can you mix and match?

For instance, Riv sells 5-6 different shifters
 (Sora, Alivio, Acera,
Altus, Claris, etc.). If I buy, say, the Altus, can I only use it with an
Altus RD?

Thanks in advance-

[RBW] Crust Harvey Mushman Bars?

2023-03-19 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I'm looking for some bars for a new cargo bike build (Surly Big Dummy) and
was intrigued when I saw Will was using Crust's Harvey Mushman bars
 on his new tandem
.

Does anyone have experience with these bars, particularly the 24 degree
backsweep version? I think I would want to cut them down to 680-ish rather
than the stock 800mm as that seems entirely too wide for urban riding. I'm
also concerned about getting enough backsweep. Assuming I"ll use a stubby
stem (50mm or shorter).

Would love to hear your thoughts if you've used these bars.

Re: [RBW] Re: PONCHOS!!!

2023-03-10 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I'll give a mildly enthusiastic recommendation for the Blue Lug/Fairweather
poncho. I use it anytime I need to ride in the rain and it does a pretty
good job. It's not great for windy rain conditions, but I doubt any poncho
would be. Someone above mentioned they're low vis colors, which is true,
but you can spruce it up with some reflective material/tape without doing
damage to the waterproof fabric.

I got it mounted properly and the ambient humidity has dropped considerably

work at all. But I may take it off the bike and try to submerge in a bag of

[RBW] WTB: 26.0 Quill Stem for Ron's Ortho Bars

2022-06-09 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
Does anyone have a spare/extra 26.0 clamp quill stem with decent reach
(~90-110mm)? Preferably Nitto Tallux or Technomic. This is for a temporary
bar set up with some Ron's Ortho Bars, so I don't necessarily want to buy a
brand new stem. Thanks in advance!

I could probably do next Wednesday. Alan, let me know if you need a
wheelset for the new Chev. I have a fairly new Alex Adventurer 2 set with a
Shimano dynamo up front and Deore on the rear. Currently just sitting in
the closet. Handbuilt by Honey Wheels in Brooklyn.

Does anyone know of other sources? What other similar brass bits elevate a

[RBW] Front Derailleur Recommendation for 64 Clem L

2021-10-14 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a specific front derailleur for my
64 Clem. I took it to a local bike shop and they weren't entirely sure what
FD to install/order b/c of the granny gear. I have a Silver 38/24 wide/low
double with 9 Speed 12-36t on the rear. I'd prefer something simple, cheap,
and easy, of course. Thanks in advance!

2021-07-20 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
Anyone know what tire clearance is on a 55cm Yves/Betty? According to this,
the larger frame can take 700x50, assuming a 650b would have a little
more...

[RBW] Re: Cheviot questions

2021-05-14 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I can't comment on the 50cm Chev, but I have 700x50 tires on my 60cm with a
Tektro R559 sidepull in the rear and there's plenty of clearance. Without
fenders, I think you'd be fine clearing a 650bx50 on the smaller model.
(From my experience, Riv is rather conservative on their max tire size
recommendations.)

Not sure what your PBH is but another option would be a 45cm Clem L (48.5
chainstays) which can fit up to 26x2.4" tires with a V-brake or cantis.

Yep, the Xtracycle conversion fit perfectly into the drop outs, so whatever
previous spacing issues there were had been resolved. I *think* the chain
length is ballpark ~175 links but it could be more. I didn't count the
exact number b/t the two 116 link chains I used but about 1.5 chains.

I bought a Schmidt dynamo coaxial wire from a local bike shop. Each end is
just a single straight unadorned wire, though, with no connectors. I need
to use it with B lights which have two connectors set up like the below

Pardon my ignorance, but do I have to purchase the connectors from a
speciality source or is this something I can get from a hardware store and
DIY? If the latter, what exactly am I looking for? If the former, are there
online sources? Thanks in advance.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clem Smith Rear Drop Outs

2021-04-02 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
So I bought the frame! According to James at Rivendell, the distance b/t
the center of the front axle and the center of the canti posts on a Clem L
52 is 263mm. I measured the distance from my center front axel to the rim
and it's ~285mm. That's a difference of ~22mm or 2.2cm. So theoretically I
think the 26" wheel should work. Unless I'm missing something??? Anyway,
worst case scenario I have to buy a new 650b wheel for the front.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clem Smith Rear Drop Outs

2021-04-01 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
Well, since it's going to have an Xtracycle extension on the rear, that
rear axle measurement doesn't matter much. i just need to know whether a
26" wheel would fit up front. So if anyone with a 52 Clem L could measure
the distance from the center of your front axle to the canti/V-brake posts,
that would be greatly appreciated.

I was just looking at that posting! I'm considering upgrading my Xtracylce
using this frame. Does anyone know if I can fit a 26" wheel up front, maybe
using a Paul Motolite or something with lots of reach? I know the 52 is

[RBW] Bike Navigation/GPS recommendations?

2021-03-27 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I'm looking for a simple, compact bike navigation device that I can mount
to my bars when needed (and remove when not needed) to use on more
complicated routes and rides. I don't care about tracking miles or speed or
any other parameters, just directions. Does anyone have a recommendation,
preferably on the cheaper end?

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] What is the seller's safety with PayPal and other payments.

2021-03-10 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I've had several successful bikes and parts buys-and-sells on Craigslist
(and here!) and typically use Paypal, Venmo, or cash. But definitely
beware. Someone in NYC recently was selling a Crust Romanceur complete bike
and had it stolen by a prospective buyer who took it for a "test ride" and
never came back. I've also heard of companies being on the hook for
thousands of dollars in merchandise after selling via PayPal and the buyer
claiming fraud.

[RBW] Re: Riv-ersed Shift Levers Install

Depending on what brake levers you have, you may not have to reverse them,
too. My Paul and Shimano short pull levers don't jut out but my Sunrace
linear pulls do so they kinda get in the way with the Riv-erse shifter set
up. However I was able to scooch the shifters up the bar enough to clear
the jut.

[RBW] Re: Shoe recs for platforms

2021-03-03 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I ride in Blundstones in the winter and wet weather and Vans when it's
sunny and above ~50 or so. The Vans are super grippy on Monarchs. The
Blundstones are fine if a little stiff and thick. It's hard to feel the
pedal in them but they offer good wind/cold/rain protection. Crocs,
Birkenstocks, and flipflops are great in the summer.

My Brooks C19 got swiped from my Xtracycle over the weekend (just the

they'd be up for selling? Dug out my old Abus saddle lock so this won't
happen again...

Thanks,

[RBW] Paul Racers on a Cheviot?

2021-02-10 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I've used Tektro R559's on my Cheviot from the start but was recently
considering upgrading to something different due to a slight but annoying
mechanical issue on the front caliper. (The release lock is stuck so in
order to remove the front tire, I have to fully deflate and squeeze it
between the pads.)

I noticed on Will's Staff Bikes page that he has a Paul Racer on this Chev

but only up front. Guessing it's because the rear geometry wouldn't allow a
hanger placement for a center pull?

Has anyone else used this set up? Do Paul Racers have clearance for 700c x
50mm tires? The tires in Will's pic look pretty wide and he's running a
fender too so it seems like there would be plenty of room. Thoughts?

[RBW] Re: Changing tires on Cliffhanger rims

Weird, I've always found the Cliffhangers to be some of the easiest rims

[RBW] Rusty Seat Tube on my Chev

2020-11-24 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I recently installed new pedals on my Cheviot and needed to adjust the
saddle height a tad bc the new pedals are considerably thinner than the old
ones. I noticed considerable resistance when I was attempting to lower the
seat so I decided to pull the entire thing out to see what's up. There was
a moderate amount of rust near the bottom of my seat post (a Nitto S83) and
to my horror the entire inner side of my seat tube was super rusty.

The bike is from last spring, March 2019, back when Riv was default
prepping frames before shipping with a coat of Boeshield inside the tubes
and a budget seat post installed. I ride in the rain plenty but don't leave
the bike out in the rain. The amount of rust seems a little concerning. I
think moisture/rain is getting into the seat tube via a small gap in the
seat lug—it's one of those super gorgeous pointy upside-down hearts that
has peeled forward slightly.

What should I do here? Guessing remove the post, clean up the rust, and
re-boeshield the inside. But is there any way to seal up that gap b/t the
pointy part of the lug and the seat post without banging and possibly
damaging the lug? Thinking a little bit or bees wax or something around it
could help. Any other suggestions?

Agree that it's futile to argue w/them, but the animosity stems from a
general frustration with NYPD selectively enforcing traffic laws, and
specifically 1) not citing drivers when they kill cyclists or pedestrians
and 2) targeting cyclists who are violating minor laws in areas where
cyclists were recently struck through no fault of their own. Especially a
family of three, including a 4 year old on the back of an Xtracycle, just
trying to get home on empty streets on a Sunday night. Read plenty more

Re: [RBW] Ever get pulled over by police while on your bike?

2020-09-13 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
My wife, daughter, and I were coming back from a friends's house late one
Sunday night this past February in Brooklyn. My daughter and I were on our
Xtracycle and my wife was on her bike. Two cops pulled all three of us over
for running a red light—it was 10p and no cars on the road and we did an
Idaho stop (slowed down, looked all ways, and took a right on red, which is
illegal in NYC). The cops were adamant that they were pulling us over for
our own safety b/c there had been a spate of bicycle-car collisions in the
neighborhood recently. I mouthed off about that being cars' fault rather
than cyclists'. The cops were pretty much mum but still gave both my wife
and I summonses that totaled about $490. (I sarcastically asked why they
weren't giving my daughter one too; probably not a good look but I was
pretty upset at the ridiculousness of the situation.) We're currently
appealing and b/c of covid the case has been pushed back to next March. So
it will be over a year since the actual incident. Fingers crossed the judge
will throw it out or at least reduce it.

Here's the old sizing chart for MUSA Atlantis and Homers. Looks like for
PBH 82-83, a 53-54.5 is recommended. You could probably make it work

[RBW] Re: Crankset & BB Question

2020-08-25 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
Thanks Benz. It's tough to tell exactly where the pops and creaks are
coming from but it seems to happen only during hard pedaling and kind of
feels like it's coming from the left (non-drive side) crank arm which is
attached with hex bolts. The whole crankset has always annoyed me, mostly
aethetically with this hi-tech look, but I haven't bothered to tinker with
it too much. You're right–the Xtracylce extension could be part of the
popping and creaking as well since it's attached pretty close to the crank
area. I'll try to do some further investigation especially now that I know
a crank replacement will require more than just a swap-out.

[RBW] Crankset & BB Question

2020-08-25 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I bought a mountain bike on Craigslist and have been using it with an
Xtracycle Free Radical conversion for a few months as a kid hauler and
cargo bike. The crankset and bottom bracket it came with are part of the
Shimano Hollowtech group: BB is Shimano SM-BB51

 and
the crank is a Shimano XT two-piece compression thing like this

 with
a built in spindle. I've been having some issues with the crank creaking
and popping when I ride and would like to replace it with something simpler
and more classic looking, like a Riv Clipper wide/low

.

Question is, do I have to replace the entire bottom bracket or can I use
the SM-BB51 and install a new spindle? The current crankset has a spindle
built in/attached. Would this work?

I'm kinda clueless when it comes to this Hollowtech stuff and not sure
what's compatible/interchangeable. Thanks in advance.

[RBW] WTB: Dark Realm Wald 139 Basket Bag

2020-07-23 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
Does anyone have a Dark Realm Wald 139 they're looking to part with?
Specifically looking for a drip camo or hand-dyed color but open to others.
Most are sold out online except pink. I know Blue Lug has the drip camo in
stock but b/t the mark-up and the shipping, I'm not willing to pull the
trigger. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Thoughts on Rivendell cork grips

2020-07-05 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I used them for years and loved them, but I've switched to ESI grips
recently just to change things up. I put some new cork grips on my wife's
new bike a few months ago. They're gorgeous and comfortable for commuting
and leisure riding. They aren't soft but I wouldn't say they feel hard or
uncomfortable in any way. The worst part IMO is you have to glue them on,
which means if you have to change your levers, shifters, bells, etc. it can
be a real pain in the ass and you have to essentially destroy the grips in
the process.

[RBW] Re: Velocity Dyads and 50mm Tires

2020-06-23 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
Not entirely related, but I was running 50mm tires on a set of Velocity
NoBS rims and kept getting weird flats where the tube looked like it had
been slashed 3-4". No punctures and not your typical snakebite pinch flat
pattern. I couldn't figure it out but Velocity said the tires were too wide
for that rim. (Max they recommend is 45mm which is like a fifth of an inch
smaller.) I switched to 45's and no problems. I dunno ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Never
figured it out but there was something going on with running too big tires
on those rims.

[RBW] Ultradynamico Tires

2020-06-18 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
Ultradynamico just released 700c versions
of their tires and I'm thinking
about ordering a pair for my 60cm Chev. Specifically I'm looking at the JFF
Cava model, though I'm concerned by the *"Zero sidewall protection and no
puncture protection on top for premium ride quality"* line in the
description. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with these tires as
all-arounders. Most of my riding is in on paved streets in an urban
environment with the occasional trail and gravel road.

Will they be disastrous/flat-prone on city streets? I saw in Grant's latest
blog

 that
Riv will be carrying them in the near future as they move to streamline
their tire offerings, so I feel some confidence given Riv historically
promoting practical/anti-flat tires. But who knows? Should I consider the
Robusto, which are slightly more expensive but at least have some sidewall
protection? Any thoughts more than welcome.

[RBW] Re: Clem H + Xtracycle

2020-04-18 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I toyed with this idea a few months ago. Ended up finding an Xtracycle
conversion on Craigslist for $300 attached to an old generic MTB-ish thing,
very Clem like in geometry without the long chainstays so I'm just using
that for the kid taxing and cargo hauling.

Anyway, someone else on here (Hi, Ed!) who had built up a Clem-Xtracycle
DM'd the below to me. He had tons of experience with different cargo bikes
and his thoughts are below.

Short version: It worked brilliantly and he fully recommended it.

Long version (quoting from Ed here on out): "I "salvaged" a Leap kit off of
a Tern Cargo Node, so it's not quite the retail kit but close enough. I've
had a Dummy, a 1st gen Edgerunner, and Tern Cargo Node. I really liked the
Dummy (regret selling it to this day...) since it was a solid bike that
rode well with or without a load. The Edgerunner was a disappointment: a
bit too flexy in the wrong places, and pretty "dead" for a cromoly frame. I
could never get the fit of the Tern right with that weird Andros stem and
the ride was dead too, though as a cargo bike it was serviceable.

The Clem build up wasn't too dramatic. The long chain stays aren't a
problem. I wanted to run the "shorter" wheelbase slot on the leap but that
didn't work the way the dropouts are on the Clem. The rear dropouts do work
with the "long" wheelbase option on the Leap without interference, and I
didn't find the bike any more unwieldy than the other longtails I've owned.
Having a kickstand plate is an advantage and relieves stress on the top of
the chain stay tubes. You're already familiar with the "mullet" wheelset I
had built up: front rim hub, rear disc hub, using rim compatible Sun Rhyno
XL rims F/R. For brakes, I ran BB7 and stock pads with a 180mm rear disc -
with a load, 160mm may be too small - and Shimano V-brakes up front with
Kool Stop pads. As with any longtail build, I used a full run housing to
the rear derailleur and brake. Compressionless is best but super expensive
so I used the pro version of Jagwire housing as an affordable alternative. (
https://jagwire.com/products/housing)

The built up bike was brilliant. It had all the characteristics of the
Dummy in terms of handling with or without a load, but with a step
thru/lower standover frame and a more upright, and comfortable, riding
position. (I'd recommend the Clem L over the Cheviot for the lower
standover.) The mullet brakes are as weird as you'd expect - different
modulations - but easy to get used to and always plenty of stopping power.

Eventually, I did take it apart to sell the Cargo Node as a complete bike.
I would have opted to get the retail Leap kit and rebuilt the Clem L but I
am an old man with twins so opted for a cargo e-bike instead."

[RBW] WTB: Small Clem L, Cheviot, or other Riv Step-Thru or Mixte

2020-04-16 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I know this is a long shot considering the popularity of these bikes in
these sizes, but we're looking for a Riv step-thru or mixte (frame or
complete) for my wife who is ~5'4". A 45 cm Clem L would be ideal,
obviously, but we'd also consider a 50 cm Chev or one of the older
step-thru or mixte frames in similar size (Clementine, Glorious, Yves
Gomez, etc.).

Anybody got something they've been thinking of selling or leads on online
shops that might have something in stock? Riv is all sold out of the above
mentioned and no clue when the next shipment of Clem or Cheviot frames will
land. I've even thought about building up a Soma Buena Vista but not crazy
about the color options and overall aesthetics compared to a Riv. Let me
know if you have any other recommendations? Thanks!
