Re: [Repeater-Builder] antenna plan
Hopefully it is not uncool to be the first to respond to one's own post. I'll take the fact that there was no flood of flames, or naysayers, to indicate that my plan is worth attempting. So as a follow-up question, I would ask, could anyone offer recommendations for a yagi, corner reflector, or other directional antenna, suitable for duplex use, with a beamwidth of no less than 30deg and a gain of no less than say 7dB? 73 Paul - Original Message - From: Paul Holm I'm looking for input on an antenna plan. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Henry C100D10R Repeater Amplifier Fuse Rating ?
Fuses protect wiring. Equipment should be fused to match the power handling level of the leads that supply it. For a 100 watt mobile, I would choose 10ga wire (unless the leads needed to be quite long) and fuse it at 30amps. 73 Paul - Original Message - From: hfd_firefighter I have one that came with a 15 amp fuse that blows whenever I apply more than 5 watts drive. I suspect that the fuse should be around 20 - 40 amps as the power supply requirement is 25 amps. Anyone know the proper fuse rating for this amp? What is a typical rating for a 100 watt mobile transmitter? I wanted to change the fuse to something larger to see if I can get rated power out, I'm running at 30 watts now with 3 watts drive and the 15 amp fuse. Thanks in advance Jim WA1SOT.
[Repeater-Builder] antenna plan
I'm looking for input on an antenna plan. Currently have a Diamond X500HNA on a water tank. Antenna is mounted on a mast, clamped to the fill pipe on the side of the tank, with base of antenna just above the top of the tank in order to maintain a circular pattern. See the picture attached, taken of the west side of the tank. I'd like to change to an ellliptical pattern that favors the bigger town in the county which is roughly at 270 deg west and about 6 miles away. The fill pipe is located on this side of the tank. I'd like to put a Decibel 2-bay folded dipole (model?) that I already have, on our mast so that it is above the tank. I'd like to position the dipoles so that one is at about 30 deg NE and the other is at about 150 deg SE. Here's where the elliptical part comes in. I'd like to take a yagi or corner reflector and mount it lower, at the railing or a short distance up the mast, and point it at the town I'd like to focus on at 270 deg west. It would be fed together with the Decibel using a coaxial power divider. The vertical distance from the bottom of the Decibel and the directional antenna would be about 25 feet. I'm thinking that someone has done this before. How does it perform? Can you put antennas to work together like this and come up with a nice egg-shaped pattern without deep nulls? I am willing to spend time working to get accurate phasing lines fabricated for the power divider. Will I run into problems with patterns shifting because of any slight impedance mismatches between the phasing lines and the feedpoints of the antennas? In simple terms, what I'm shooting for is base/mobile coverage out to about 25-30 miles from the NW clockwise around to the SW, and handheld coverage in the town to the west in my elliptical 'blob'. I realize that there are a lot of other variables involved in coverage area such as output power, sensitivity, feedline loss, haat, and so on. Thanks for your input. 73 Paul - KC0HSTattachment: P4120024.JPG

I wish I knew what your secret is for making International UPS shipping that easy. Where I work we do retail UPS shipping for customers. We finally just gave up trying to ship internationally. Every time we tried to send one out, the driver would reject it or else it would come back the next day, rejected down the line. The explaination was always that we had omitted the correct form(s) and/or included the wrong ones. This is after working with UPS directly on the phone to verify what was needed. That issue, combined with the high fees ( $125 for a medium to large box) discouraged customers anyway. On the other hand, USPS International Priority Mail is a breeze; only one short form to include with the regular shipping labels. And the price is good too. 73 Paul - Original Message - From: La Rue Communications If you're an account holder with UPS, International Shipping is not a chore - just filling in one carbon piece of paperwork, and stick it in the clear envelope. [Repeater-Builder] Another unknown duplexer
This set of cans has been in our club since before I was involved. None of us seem to recall where this thing came from or who made it. Does anyone recognize this one? http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Repeater-Builder/photos/album/700689718/pic/list The cavities are about 4 in diameter and are 23 long. The top plate is heavy brass and is made to fit 6 spaces in a 19 rack. At first glance it almost looks like it is homebrewed. The cavities are not silver plated. But some things make it appear to be of commercial origin. The aluminum cavities have very neatly welded top mounting flanges and bottom endcaps, and are anodized/alodized. Also, the tuning rod lock nut assemblies appear to be custom fasteners, and the center elements have nice fingerstock at the bottom. We used this on a temporary, low-power machine a few years ago. Now, we'd like to really go through it and tune it up for a another machine. While I had it here, I thought I'd try to figure out where it came from. Thanks. 73 Paul - KC0HST

I didn't measure the wall thickness. They are relatively thin and lightweight, while the flange is thick. Definitely aluminum or some other very lightweight metal. - Original Message - From: Joe k1ike_ Subject: Re: [Repeater-Builder] Another unknown duplexer I've never seen a set like that, but the cans look like they are made out of rigid coaxial line, the kind used for high power FM and TV broadcast stations. Rigid coax was thick walled compared to regular hardline. Joe

Good grief... My first impression is that they are over-reaching a bit here, perhaps farther than they can manage. They literally have no idea (or proof) of whether any item they are observing is indeed a feedline or antenna. How do they know for sure? yeah, I know, but how do they know for sure? Are they going to insist on touring your equipment rooms with techs and test equipment? ('sorry, we don't let unauthorized personnel in our equipment shelters...'). I'm not advocating deception; just trying to make a point about enforceablility and feasibility. I haven't used a programmer from RF Guys but I have been down the same road of misery of trying to figure out why a similar programmer wouldn't work. These are built on perfboard correct? You'll find pages on the web about how folks have handwired one of these things up with a latch chip and they work fine. I found out that your mileage may very. Apparently, the variances in these circuits along with different flavors of latch chips can prove to be quite problematic as far as generating errors on the eproms. I gave up on my nicely hand-wired yet non-functioning version built by following a webpage by KG4LNE, and bit the bullet and bought his high quality PCB instead. Loaded my parts on it, and it works like a champ. Cost is higher though, of course. My only real gripe is wishing I hadn't gotten sucked into rolling my own and wasting a whole bunch of time. [Repeater-Builder] dual band antenna
I realize that from time-to-time this subject has come up: the want of a commercial-grade dual band antenna. The DB314 is one option that has been mentioned before, but the gain figures are not what we'd like them to be. And we'd really like to find something other than a multiple-section ham dual bander. Our ham club is wanting to add 440 capabilities to our current repeater site. The tower is a golfball-on-a-tee style water tower, and we are allowed only one mounting location. So we find ourselves in this same situation. We are currently using a commercial fiberglass stick on the low end of it's 2:1 curve for VHF and we are allowed to replace it with whatever we want to pay for. hi hi Has anyone ever tried 'interlacing' a DB224 and a DB408 or DB420(or similar) on a common mast? and use suitable diplexers at the top and bottom ends of the line? or would there be too much interaction between the bays, using that physical arrangement? or would it result in goofy patterns? Re: [Repeater-Builder] using two radios in tandem
In this particular situation, the users don't need to hear each other. This will be used for running a Skywarn net on two repeaters which are not linked. Only the net control station needs to hear everyone. Users will be trained to expect this format. Getting back to the technical stuff, does anyone have any advice on the microphone connections? Could the MIC HI and GND lines simply be paralleled? Re: [Repeater-Builder] TM-241A audio to external tone decoder
We had similar difficulties with a 241 and an external tone board using the audio from the mic connector. We switched to using the ext. speaker jack for an audio connection and it worked much better. Paul - KC0HST - Original Message - From: Paul Kelley I am wanting to temporarily use a Kenwood TM-241A radio at a repeater site... not for a repeater receiver but for something fairly mission critical. I fed the audio output available at the mic connector to a TS-32P and it seemed to decode fine at first. I have now found it decodes signals from some radios and not from others. Not sure if the audio level is borderline (too low) or if the audio from that point may be after a high pass filter in the radio or what??? Any hints? I am on my way back to the site to mess with it some more but will check back with email in a couple of hours. Paul, N1BUG Yahoo! [Repeater-Builder] CTCSS decode/DTMF tone problem
I'm working on adding Echolink to our 2M machine (pl 146.2) here and am using a Kenwood TM-241 for a link radio. This rig does not have PL decode so we added an outboardTranscendient CDC-01 decoder board. Using the RX out pin off of the mic connector for discriminator tap. PL decode works greatexcept when DTMF tones are sent through the repeater. As soon as DTMF is sent, audio from the decoder drops out. This is not happening when testing on a simplex frequency, only when sending DTMF tones through the repeater. Any ideas about what's happening? Thanks. Paul - KCØHST Yahoo! [Repeater-Builder] estimating duplexer requirements
I'm wondering how a person can estimate the amount of rejection that would be required from a duplexer given the amount of power coming out of the associated tx. I realize that this also is dependent upon the amount of sideband noise on the tx and the sensitivity of the rx. I'm focusing mainly on the 2M ham band using Bp/Br type duplexers and MastrII radios. Are there any rules of thumb to determine the minimum amount of rejection required when using 'x' amount of power? Thanks. Paul Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: connectors
There's been some good input as far as connector style. I guess a follow-up question that comes to mind would be, how do people feel about silver vs. nickel/USA vs. import? Thanks all. Paul - Original Message - I would recommend the clamp type of connectors. That way you don't need to get special tools to do the crimping. The only tools needed for the clamp type are for stripping the cable, measuring the cable to strip and cut it, cutters to trim the shield and the center conductor. And a couple of wrenches to tighten the clamp. Voila! You are done. And after enough of them, you won't even need to measure the cable for cutting and trimming. Calibrated eyeball does wonders. :-) ka0ies Yahoo!
