Update 5.1

2000-03-15 Thread Adam Cohen

Just did the 5.1 update on a Win 2000 pro machine. After such, Outlook 2000
seemed to have been corrupt. The .PST file can't be imported or read. Not
sure what happened. Anyone else having problems. The v5.1 seems to be
working fine but the outlook problem really caused me grief. I did manage
to restore the .PST file but lost all of todays mail.

Re: Question

2000-03-15 Thread Matthew Tevenan

Bruce,

The problems with the Yamaha 4416 and 6416 have been solved by beta firmware
provided by Yamaha. If you purchase one of these drives and need the
firmware update, just contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we can provide you
with it. A final firmware version should be available soon from Yamaha.

Retrospect for Macintosh does not yet support the Yamaha 8424, though
Retrospect for Windows does. I expect that we will eventually be able to
support the 8424 on the Mac since we do under Windows, but of course there
are no guarantees. I unfortunately don't have a timeframe for when to expect
support either, but keep checking back at the compatibility list at

for any updates.

Question

2000-03-15 Thread Bruce Haig

Late last year I bought Retrospect Express and found it excellent
working with my syjet. Unfortunately the syjet died and for the past
2 months I have been having a very frustrating time trying to find
out what would be the best CD-RW replacement.

It seems that the models Dantz says are compatible on their list are
always "out of stock"

I use a Mac 7200/90 and I have noticed the APS line seems to be
popular but the Yamaha 4x4x16 and 6x4x16 innards have caused grief.

Now they are selling a 8x4x24 SCSI. Will it work with my Retrospect
Express? If not now, do you think they will eventually have a
Retrospect Express working with it?

Is there a Cd-RW that would be the ideal problem-free machine that I
should be looking for. Speed is not that important - good service is.

I assume that this is in the client. Can we use the .rcu file to update from
a mac server? If not when will we get client updaters for the mac server?

And I hope the mac users can benefit too :-)

Re: Retrospect and Virex

2000-03-15 Thread Matthew Tevenan

Kelly,

We've seen Virex cause network communication failures if you have it set to
"scan compressed files on download." This is a non-default setting that will
trigger a scan when any outside source tries to access a compressed file.
This includes Retrospect. The scan is so hard disk-intensive that the
Retrospect backup fails.

The only way around this is to disable this feature. Try going back to
default Virex settings, then changing them as desired, testing a backup
after each change.

...although you're still adding something "extra" to the Unix/Linux machine
if you have to install a Retrospect client. The real advantages to a
Retrospect client vs. a mounted volume would be the ability to store file
permissions, access certain open files, and schedule backups from the client
side...non-trivial advantages, to be sure. I would guess that Dantz is at
least taking a long, hard look at Retrospect for Mac OS X, which in effect
means that they're looking at Retrospect for UNIX. Let's all hope so, but in
the meantime I'll be using SAMBA and DAVE to backup my UNIX boxes if needed.

Not to rant or anything, but the real question here is, "How bad do you want
a backup?" Backups require dedicated hardware, software, and bandwidth,
period. If you don't need to back it up, then you're wasting more than
bandwidth by doing so. If it's worth being backed up, then it's worth the
bandwidth (and what's a network for, if not to transfer data? Just a bunch
of pretty lights and colorful wires?). Also, file permissions are nice to
have, but I'd much rather have a backed-up file with no permissions than no
file at all.

:)

I'm not sure I understand why; if you mount the netatalk-shared volume
on the machine that's running retrospect, then you're still moving
each file across the network once.

Unfortunately, you throw away all of your ownership and permissions
information at the same time. :-/

Announcing Retrospect 5.1 for Windows

2000-03-15 Thread Eric Ullman

Today, Dantz is also announcing Retrospect 5.1 for Windows, a free upgrade
to version 5.0.

Several new features are included, such as Apple Script-like capabilities
for working with external scripts that can email media requests, pause and
restart servers around backup operations, and even notify the administrator
if someone enters the incorrect password in Retrospect.

Version 5.1 also offers improved open file support and support for
additional devices, like the OnStream ADR drives.

More details are in the press release:

http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=pr_retro51_win

The updater is available at:

http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=updates

We hope all the Windows version users on the list enjoy the new features!

Retrospect and Virex

2000-03-15 Thread kmclaughlin

From: Kelly McLaughlin

Hello all!

I am new to the list and new to using Retrospect. I'm sorry if this issue
has been covered already. I am having trouble with Retrospect backups when
Virex is turned on. I am attempting to backup a server with several
external drives. I always get a network communication error if Virex is on
and the backup runs flawlessly when Virex is off. Obviously, with it being
a server, I need continual virus protection. Can anyone offer and ideas or
suggestions?

Thanks, in advance for your help...
