Welcome Glen, I'm still pretty new here myself. I post on ASA under the
CrimsonTim moniker. I like that newsgroup, because it is open to everyone
and come football season, it can be a fun place that everyone, including the
opponents, can find and post to. Unfortunately there's is no control and
that means that one poster can ruin it the way Wayne did a couple of years
ago.

This place is a little more rough at times though. The language can lend
itself a little more toward The Booth at 3:30 am on a Friday night than
church on Sunday morning. That don't bother none though. I like The Booth!

Do you post to ASA or just lurk? I'm pretty much convinced there are at
least 500 lurkers for every poster.

RTR!

PS: I know someone told you already, but HTML is really frowned upon in

Well, I picked up an advanced copy of Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer off of
half.com. The author refers to a Bamafan listserv that he joined to get some
info. Well, I went on a hunt for that listserv. The only site linked off his
site (rammerjammeryellowhammer.com) with a listserv is this one. :) So, I
joined up to get some good 'ol crimson and white flowing into my email. (I
need as much as I can get down here @ AU...ugh...)

More about me? I transferred from UA to AU a couple years back to go into
the ONLY undergrad wireless electrical engineering program in the country.
(I call it ministering to the most needy, lol) I consider myself the biggest
Bama fan on campus.

I'm a mod over @ TideTalk Forums (ttforums.com) and always looking for new
ways to get involved with Tide-related activities online. I also have a red
arm and a white arm, compliments of God. (I think God's a Bama fan.)
http://www.myfreakingopinion.com/images/finger.jpg is a decent pic of me
flipping off the NCAA, but it shows off the arm color too. What can I say,
God made me an Alabama fan. ;)

Other than that, I'm was born and raised in a family full of huge Bama fans.
If you meet them, you usually don't forget them. (If you live in Atmore, you
probably know my aunt, or know of hereveryone around there does._

Enough of the bio, I gotta get back to a program.

Sorry about the HTML, I stand corrected. I post on rare occasion at a.s.a.

of the group has changed somewhat. The trolls are being fed way too much and
keep coming back to catch the same fish repeatedly.

second-rate wannabe lists and a Gestapo list but they suck.

Thank God you didn't say your aunt lived in Mulga. Whew!

We are a pretty tight group here. This is most certainly a R-rated list much of
the time. Many of us get together at Bama games and tailgate so the insults can
fly freely and cut deeply (but all in good humor most of the time).

If you happen to live in Valparaiso, Florida we may be willing to give you a
buck or two to roll a 'tard into the surf... Interested? It can serve as
community service if needed.

There is also not a Usenet newsgroup that is tied to this list. I am in the
process of trying to find a reliable free news server that allows posting so all
list messages are cross-posted to the news group. The group can also be used for
direct posting if interested. The group is
alt.sports.college.alabama.rolltidefan. If your ISP's news server does not carry
the group please write them and demand that it be added to their list. It can
also be found on many free news servers for reading only. On of these is nntp.idg.pl

Season belonged to Antoine Pettway
From Way Downtown
Charlie Gasner
April 08, 2004

Antoine Pettway is an autograph machine. These days, he has to be, if he wants half a
chance at eating.

Most of Alabama's players were able to move around enough to get a soda and a hors
d'oeuvre at Tuesday night's Tide Pride/Tuscaloosa Tip-Off Club awards reception. Not
Pettway.

Chuck Davis had a handful of Sports Illustrated covers to sign, but Pettway was a
human Department of Motor Vehicles. Want to talk to the senior point guard? Get in
line. Wait.

Everyone and their adorable 5-year-old child had something for Pettway to autograph.
Basketballs. Pictures. Shoes. The guy was a leaf blower and a ratchet wrench away from
putting his signature on one of everything in your dad's garage.

You're the best point guard we've had here since T.R. Dunn, said one well-wisher.

I'm sure I'll see you here again as Alabama's coach, said another fan.

Coach Pettway? There's an interesting idea.

I don't know [about coaching], Pettway said. That's sort of stressful.

Point taken. Coaching - that's stressful. Tie game at Georgia with three seconds left?
That's easy. Down three at Arkansas on the last possession of regulation? Piece of
cake. Needing a basket to avoid elimination in the first round of the NCAA Tournament?
Cash money.

If this dude says he thinks something's stressful, you'd better believe him.

Alabama will be able to replace [Pettway] in the first 38 minutes of a game, Alabama
assistant coach Tom Asbury said. But in the last couple of minutes ... he's a special
guy when the game is on the line.

How close did Alabama come to missing the NCAA Tournament? At Georgia, the Bulldogs
and Crimson Tide scuffed their way out to 42 points each before Pettway stuck a
3-pointer in the waning seconds of the game.

At Arkansas, Pettway hit another 3 to send the game to overtime.

At Auburn, Emmett Thomas hit the free throws that put Alabama ahead, but it was
Pettway's floater on the previous possession that put Thomas in position to take the
lead.

How close did Alabama come to a one-and-done NCAA Tournament? With the game almost
over and the shot clock off, Pettway took the ball into the lane, sidestepped a few
Southern Illinois defenders and threw up a teardrop six-footer that kept the season
going.

It'll go down in history as Alabama's first Elite Eight run. But without Pettway, it's
probably a field-of-65 run. Or an NIT run. So on one hand, Alabama only loses one
starter this year. On the other, he just happens to be the heart of the team.

There's no replacing Antoine, Davis said. He's done so much. Our guys have to step
up and take command of the team like he's done these past four years.

Pettway's time in a Crimson Tide uniform is up. After four years in college, he's
graduating with a degree in health care management in May. But if he has it his way,
he won't be putting that degree to use anytime soon.

I'll weigh my options, Pettway said. I want to play professionally.

What kind of professional league would pick up a basketball player who's listed very
generously at 6 feet tall, an outside shooter whose 3-point shot looks like a
gymnastics routine, and a point guard who doesn't throw flashy behind-the-back passes
or slam highlight-reel dunks?

The NBA, I hope, Pettway said.

So what if Pettway's name doesn't pop up on the mock drafts? No one thought he could
play college ball, either. Alabama coach Mark Gottfried only discovered Pettway when
he went to check out another player. He didn't have a scholarship for Pettway, but
Pettway walked on for a year and earned a scholarship anyway.

He made a choice to come to Alabama and was determined to prove to our staff and
everybody that he belonged there, Gottfried said. And he quickly did that.

He isn't flashy, but he's as steady as they come - he averaged just 1.5 turnovers in
33 minutes per game this year. His assist-to-turnover ratio was the best in the SEC.

His 3-point shot won't win any awards for form, but basketball players aren't scored
on form. All that matters is he hit 39.1 percent of those trifectas in the past four
years, good for sixth on the school's all-time list.

He's probably closer to 5 feet 10 inches than 6 feet tall, but it's not as if he'll be
asked to guard Yao Ming.

After an NCAA Tournament win, Gottfried called Pettway The Little Engine That Could.
Pettway still thinks he can.

Would you bet against him?

Charlie Gasner is sports editor of The Crimson White.

Affidavit: Analyst wanted revenge

02/27/04
DOUG SEGREST
News staff writer

An affidavit taken in a defamation and libel case against the NCAA alleges a
recruiting analyst conspired to damage the Alabama football program out of vengeance.

The affidavit is part of pre-trial discovery by attorney Thomas Gallion, who
represents former Crimson Tide assistant coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams in a
civil suit against the NCAA.

The source of the affidavit, Clark Charles Branch, is a former work associate of Tom
Culpepper, a local recruiting analyst. Culpepper was identified in court documents as
a secret witness in the NCAA's investigation of Crimson Tide recruiting.

That investigation landed Alabama on probation in 2002 and cost the school 21
scholarships and two potential postseason appearances.

In the affidavit, Branch said Culpepper expressed contempt for former Alabama
recruiting coordinator Cottrell and Memphis booster Logan Young. Culpepper blamed
Young's influence for the loss of his job as a television analyst for a now-defunct
Birmingham-based cable sports station.

Branch said that on at least six occasions in 2001, he heard Culpepper say I'll do
whatever it takes to see Cottrell and Young fall as a result of the NCAA
investigation.

The affidavit said Culpepper worked in concert with Rich Johanningmeier, the NCAA
enforcement representative who investigated Alabama. At one point, Culpepper told
Branch he and Johanningmeier were worried that the case against Alabama would unravel
unless someone went on the record.

Branch said Culpepper claimed he encouraged Memphis high school coach Milton Kirk to
go public with allegations of wrongdoing against Alabama. Kirk was an assistant coach
during Alabama's recruitment of Memphis blue-chip prospect Albert Means, a player the
NCAA said signed with Alabama only after Young paid $115,000.

Branch said he believed Culpepper had inside information from the NCAA because he
accurately predicted Alabama would be punished severely by the NCAA even before the
case reached its conclusion.

Culpepper, a Shelby County resident, said Thursday that he could not respond to the
allegations due to a standing protective order barring comment in the suit brought
against the NCAA by Cottrell and Williams.

Culpepper is included as a defendant in the suit. Both Cottrell and Williams claim
they have not been able to get Division I-A jobs since leaving Alabama because of the
damage inflicted on them by the NCAA's investigation.

A recent published transcript of Alabama's appearance before the NCAA Committee on
Infractions showed both Cottrell and Williams were discussed at the November 2001
hearing.

NCAA spokesman Wally Renfro said he would not rehash the transcript. But Renfro, who
serves as NCAA President Myles Brand's senior adviser, said the NCAA's treatment of
the two coaches is obvious in the transcript.

Ivy Williams wasn't alluded to in terms of any allegations, Renfro said. All but
one of the allegations against Ronnie Cot trell were self-reported by the institution,
not the NCAA, and were ones he acknowledged.

Renfro noted that an NCAA charge of unethical behavior against Cottrell was argued and
eventually dismissed.

I think you can make a strong argument that publishing the transcript does far more
damage to their (Cottrell and Williams') case than ours, Renfro said.

Renfro will represent the NCAA in a panel discussion Sunday morning when ESPN
broadcasts an Outside the Lines episode that explores the rift between Alabama and
Tennessee over the NCAA investigation.

Auburn newspaper backs away from challenge
From staff reports
November 24, 2003

AUBURN - In a move that came as a surprise to almost no Crimson White staff members
Saturday, The Auburn Plainsman postponed its flag football game against The CW.

The move came a mere 30 minutes before the game, when Plainsman Editor Lindsay Evans
called with an assertion that all regular members of The Plainsman's flag football
team, with the exception of herself, were either sick or injured.

Evans offered to reschedule the game for Tuscaloosa in early to mid-December. CW
Editor Chris Sanders accepted the offer in principle.

The CW handily won the first Not-Quite Iron Bowl, 26-14, in Tuscaloosa in 2000. The
CW's fun-'n'-gun passing attack helped its Crimson Thunder football squad jump out to
an early 26-0 lead and cruise to victory.

Since then, The Plainsman has either ignored The CW's flag football challenges or
backed out of games at the last minute.

Sanders, who was set to make his head coaching debut Saturday, said he remains
skeptical that the game will happen at all this year.

Evans' cell phone was turned off Saturday afternoon, and she did not return messages
seeking further comment.

The Plainsman's postponement came too late for many CW staffers, who had already made
the three-hour trek across Alabama to the Plains.

Sports Editor Drew Champlin, one of the few CW staffers with a reason to be in Auburn
other than the flag football game, said the last-minute change left him bitter about
losing sleep.

Basically, I woke up early this morning for nothing, Champlin said.

Student Life Editor Nick Beadle, who was in Auburn for the second time in three weeks,
expressed disappointment over the game's cancellation. Most of his comments cannot be
printed in a family newspaper.

Despite their disappointment, many CW staff members made the best of their situations.
Several visited with old high school friends who attend Auburn University, and others
obtained sweet deals on Iron Bowl tickets.

But others, tired of fighting traffic, getting no cell phone signals and wading
through a sea of orange and blue, could not stand to spend a minute more in the
purported loveliest village on the Plains.

Jesus, Auburn sucks, Beadle said.

Honestly, I half-expected that from The Auburn Plainsman.

Since 2001, I have been a part of Crimson White staffs that have tried to challenge
the Auburn weekly newspaper to a flag football game. In 2001 and 2002, they simply
declined the challenge ahead of time. This year, they did themselves one better: They
asked us to meet them in Auburn at their office. Roughly 10 of us obliged, even though
only about four had tickets to the game. Then, upon our arrival, The Plainsman
announced that it would not be playing due to a team-wide illness.

When one of our editors tried to call one of their editors for a more complete
explanation, she was first hung up on. When she called back a minute later, The
Plainsman representative had switched her phone to voicemail. Not only were they
ducking the game after we had made the trip, they were ducking the explanation and
apology for canceling the game in such a last-minute manner. Classy move.

first hung up on. When she called back a minute
later, The Plainsman representative had switched her
phone to voicemail. Not only were they ducking the
game after we had made the trip, they were ducking
the explanation and apology for canceling the game
in such a last-minute manner. Classy move.

around 10:30, got up around 5:30 on Sat. had breakfast and checked out before
7:00. A couple of weeks later I received my credit card statement and the hotel
had placed two additional charges for a total of $300.00 on it. When I called to
ask why, I was told that it was for damages to the room, they said the it had
been vandalized. We DID NOT vandalized the room in any way unless you want to
call unmade beds and "dirty" towels left in the bathroom after our showers as
vandalizim. Anyway just wanted to let all of my fellow Bamafans know this so
that you can be aware next time you need to stay in T-town. For me it sure won't
be at the Comfort Inn.

I have tried, I have had numerous conversations with the general manager
and the home office to no avail. I even tried contacting 6 on your side
and 33/40, but got no help from either of them. I have disputed the charges
through the credit card company, but don't expect much help there.

Ken,

Any sensible manager would have taken photographs of the alleged damage.
Have you asked them if they have photos to prove their claim?

Two Minute Drill: Stoops talks about Alabama
By James Hale
Date: Sep 2, 2003

Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops talks about Derrick Strait's performance against North
Texas and this weekends matchup against Alabama. (AP Photo/Jackson Laizure)

NORMAN, Okla. — OU Head Coach Bob Stoops' Sooners remained No. 1 in the country and
improved to 1-0 after beating North Texas 37-3 this past Saturday.

The next challenge for Stoops and Co. comes Saturday in what should be one of their
toughest games of the year at Alabama. Stoops has played Alabama before in Tuscaloosa
from his days in Florida, and knows all about the Crimson Tide's tradition. Stoops sat
down and talked with OUInsider.com about those topics and much more Monday evening in
our two-minute drill.

JH: What did you think of Derrick Strait being named the first Big-12 Defensive Player
of the Week for 2003?

BS: “I am really proud of Derrick and that honor is well deserved. I am happy for
him, because he is such an excellent player. He has an outstanding night against North
Texas with a bunch of tackles, tackles for losses, knocking the ball loose from wide
receivers and he broke up two or three passes. He has played that way a lot for us. I
have said it before that for four years now he has been our most consistent player,
always playing at a winning level and always doing a great job for us.”

JH: Strait’s instincts for the game are incredible aren’t they?

BS: “Exactly, he is very smart and he makes sure that he is prepared for games. He
really has a great understanding and feel for the game himself.”

JH: You have coached in the SEC at Florida, so you have played Alabama before and you
have played at Alabama before. Can you compare the SEC atmosphere with that of OU or
another Big 12 power?

BS: “There really isn’t a lot of difference between OU and Alabama home games. All
leagues are pretty much the same and their fans at Alabama are excellent. They have
won a lot of championships there so they know how to win, and their fans aren’t
jealous of anybody else. They cheer for you and they are very knowledgeable and
polite. They like to see a good game and respect their opponents that also play good
football. It is a great atmosphere and they do a great job down there as well.”

JH: What are your early thoughts on Alabama?

BS: “They are a strong football team with excellent athletes who are always big and
physical. They have a physical front when you look at both sides of the ball. They
play good field position and they have players who can make plays on both sides of the
ball. They have a good team.”

JH: Brodie Croyle takes over at quarterback for the graduated Tyler Watts, so does
that change Alabama’s offense much from last year?

BS: “I don’t know that Brodie runs as much as Tyler did. He is an excellent
thrower and a guy that we tried to recruit. Last week he really started to get
comfortable in the second half and he played well.”

Auburn linebacker Lemarcus Rowell was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with
several misdemeanor offenses, including driving under the influence and possession of
marijuana, second degree.

Captain Melvin Harrison of the Opelika Police Department said Rowell, 20, was pulled
over for speeding on Pepperell Parkway at Pleasant Drive, commonly known as Five
Points, at about 2:45 a.m.

Harrison said Rowell was charged with speeding and DUI, and a subsequent search of the
1992 Mercury Marquis he was driving led to the drug charge and another misdemeanor
charge of carrying a pistol without a permit.

Rowell, the lone occupant of the vehicle, was then transported to the Opelika City
Jail, where he remained until bond was posted at about noon Sunday.

Harrison said the DUI, drug and gun charges are all Class A misdemeanors punishable by
not more than one year of jail time in each separate incident and fines of not more
than $2,000 for each incident.

If convicted of the drug charge, Rowell could have his drivers license suspended for
up to six months. A DUI conviction could result in a three-month license suspension.

Rowell, a former Parade All-American and two-time all-state selection at Opelika High
School, is expected to see considerable playing time at linebacker this fall. The
Tigers lost middle linebacker Mark Brown to graduation last season.

As a true freshman last season, Rowell played in all 12 games, posting 20 tackles. He
had a career-high five stops in his collegiate debut against Western Carolina and
added three each against Florida, Vanderbilt and Louisiana-Monroe.

Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville was out of town Sunday and could not be reached for
comment.

Two UA players drafted
By Drew Champlin

June 04, 2003

Two players who played a major role in the Alabama baseball team's success in 2003 had
their names called on the first day of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

Outfielder Beau Hearod, who led the conference in home runs (20) and runs batted in
(81) was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 10th round. For Hearod, it was the
perfect fit because Houston is near his hometown of Jennings, La.

I'm pretty excited, Hearod said. I've always been an Astros fan growing up. They're
close to my hometown, and I have family in Houston.

Hearod has completed his eligibility for the Tide, so he will attempt to sign a
contract and start playing as soon as possible. Shortstop Adam Pavkovich was drafted
in the 11th round by the Anaheim Angels but is debating on returning for his senior
season.

Honestly I was hoping I'd go earlier, Pavkovich said. I had other teams calling
earlier. The Blue Jays called in the sixth round and the Yankees called in the eighth
and offered dollar amounts, and I counter-offered, but they didn't pick me. The Angels
got me, but now it's going to be a tough decision to stay or go.

Pavkovich said that the average 11th round draft pick gets a signing bonus of
$60-$70,000 but that the figure that will likely earn his signature on a contract will
be around $140,000-$150,000.

That's what I told them; they said 'Ok, we'll see what we can do,' Pavkovich said.

Pavkovich would be the team's leading returning hitter should he return for his senior
season.

Other notable draftees with Alabama ties include football signee Cliff Davis (sixth
round-Houston), and former Alabama players Peter Stonard (fourth round-San Diego) and
Billy Hogan (fifth round-San Diego).

No other current Alabama players or signees were drafted on the first day of the
draft. Other draft-eligible players include pitcher Brian Reed and outfielder Travis
Garner. The draft will conclude today.
