The number of homes I heard was 350 for every spkr contractor office in the
US as additional market. That's from when they were still building new
homes. Regardless, how many of us are set up- or will be as the mkt
arrives with the advent of the adoption date (2011)? That's a lot of work
to do. No
We are working on the underground for a project where a remote building is
to be protected by a pre-action system whose valve is in a different
building 50ft away. The underground connecting these two buildings is to be
part of the pre-action system (piping filled with air). In other words, the
I would suggest mechanical-joint cement-lined ductile iron, but I do not
know how you are going to drain it short of putting in a pit.

You could run the ductile and run galvanized, sloped within the ductile.
This way the carrier pipe is not exposed to the soil and potential direct
damage, you also get to provide the proper slope for drainage.

You could put a saddle on the ductile, come off with 2 and have an
extension on the valve operator come up above grade; discharge of the drain
couldbe piped away or directed into a big hole with crushed stone, depending
on the volume and perc tests. Don't know if DI holds air, that's pretty

I don't know for sure, Todd, but if the homeowner can do it using that
simplified form in NFPA-13D, then I don't think the plumbing designers
should have too much difficulty. It's just math, right?

I was envolved in a similar approach to pre-action in seperate buildings and
eventually abandoned the idea for many reasons(drainage, dry pipe underground,
actuation lines). We ended up installing a riser controls in each building.
I have installed dry pipe underground using schedule 40 black pipe
Soft copper without fittings or CPVC depending on diameter would be
suitable. Drain it with a shop vac and if you don't get all the water
out who cares.

I think we are talking about two different area/density. Everything you
said is accurate. I and Dewayne, I believe, were talking about the area
density method of determining the density and the total number of heads to
calculate when we referred to area/density. See 11.2.3.2.

I have worked with a dry pipe system like this. I don't think there is a
need to remove the water from the underground. When a sprinkler operates,
the loss of supervising air pressure will be felt at the riser. That big
slug of water in the underground will reduce the time needed to get water
We specialize and do houses in the Vancouver, Canada area. Since 1994 they
have mandated a passive purge system here. Basically we run a blazemaster
sprinkler system with the most remote toilet connected to the sprinklers.
The low flow to a toilet does not set off the sprinkler flow switch
