BTW, when I configure SAMBA on my ASUS router to allow guest login
(anonymous access), I see the volume name (sda2 in the example above) as
share name in Windows (\\router\volume). But when I disable guest login,
the volume name is no longer visible and I see all the folders in the
volume as

'Squeezelite-X'

In Taskmanager's Details tab do a right-click on a column header, click
on the Select columns menu and scroll down and enable the entry called
Elevated. Processes
You don't need to provide username+password for the startup mode
'automatically run at system start'. The Windows SYSTEM account is used
in this case.
But this might need additional measures if your music files are not on
local disks or can be accessed with a specific user account only.

You would have to do it manually. See the location of the Preferences
folder in LMS server's WebUI->Settings->Information.

You shouldn't need to start LMS via your desktop shortcut. LMS is
running already as shown in the status message in your screenshot (and
as the "Abort scan" button indicates, it was scanning your library for
new and changed files).

In addition to dBpoweramp there's Exact Audio Copy for ripping on
Windows.
Whatever you're using for ripping, you probably want to keep on using
mp3tag to check and finalize the tags.

How do you know that the folders with missing audio files are properly
recognized?
Can you see them after clicking one of the Browse buttons on the
WebUI->Settings->Basic Settings page? Did you ensure there's the
checkmark beside the folder path to enable scanning for music files?

First think I'd check when this happens: open windows Task Manager
(right-click on task bar) and see if there's high load on CPU or disk.

I tried a full rescan with the --charset=utf8 startup parameter added as
dolodobendan suggested (and verified that LMS was displaying utf8
instead of cp1252 in the info). It was added and was playable without
issues as before and it also had a short file name in the data base. So

After a full library scan please check the scanner.log file for error
messages. Look at the WebUI->Settings->Information page for the file
location.

Someone should correct my if I'm wrong. I think if COMPILATION tag is
absent and the tracks of an album contains different artist tags then
some LMS logic kicks in and treats it as compilation. But if COMPILATION
tag is there then LMS doesn't apply it's own logic.

You need to check the tags of all tracks of these artists. If only one
has an artist sort tag it applies to all occurrences of that artist.

and let the Touch connect to this. Some routers have a dedicated AP mode
