I compared SM 1.1.16 & 2.0 (both linux same machine same Tabbed Browsing
pref settings) and:

1.1.16: attachment (I used a .jpg) opens in existing/current tab
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.21) Gecko/20090402
SeaMonkey/1.1.16
2.0: attachment opens properly in a new tab.
Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1pre)
Gecko/20090601 Lightning/1.0pre SeaMonkey/2.0b1pre

So it appears to have been fix in 2.0.

Hm. There was an answer from arne about a working 1.1.14 on NT 6.0 - at
least his header says so - but on a closer look he writes about opening
links and not attachments. ;)

Perhaps it works only in SM2.

Thanks for your concern. I tried your exact settings, to no avail. Could
you also post your about:config results for browser.tabs.* ?

I've got SM 1.1.14 under Linux and SM 1.1.16 under Win98SE: the bad
behavior shows up on both ones.

Some more testing:
- Linux: "seamonkey www.google.com" on a command-line uses an existing
tab; so the "external application" setting seems to be broken.
- Win98: "C:/.../seamonkey.exe www.google.com" in the Launch dialog does
create a new tab! So I'm even more puzzled now: how comes that SM obeys
the "external application" setting for really external apps but not for
its own components? (OK, strictly speaking they're not external ;-))

We're not talking about opening links, but opening attachments.

On closer inspection it is not necessary to install gcc-3. There is a
package libstdc++-v3 which should suffice. And so it was.

Now i have tested some old SMs on Linux with a fresh profile, 1.1.8,
1.1.9, 1.1.11 and 1.1.12-pre. All of them have the issue.

So it seems that it is indeed Linux-only.

SM 1.1.15 on Win98 using dial-up connection.

Just for interest, I clicked on the two links above, and they open in
two tabs of the one page. Then I compared my prefs setting with those in
the first, and mine are the same, except I also have "Hide the tab bar
when only one page open" selected and don't have anything selected for
"Open tabs instead of windows for".

Guess I should get my Mandriva Linux dial-in agent working so I can
check things in Linux (but I seem to remember its the same!!).

Maybe.

Then the issue should be tested on Linux. On my Gentoo i have SM 1.1.16
and i have just tested. The problem is there.

Well, repeated opening the same attachment should open new windows. And
that doesn't happen. Same thing with tabs.

I have some old SMs on my machine, but i am unable to run them, because
they require libstdc++.so.5 and i don't have that lib anymore after
cleaning up my Gentoo some month ago.

Surely, i could reinstall the lib, but i do not wish so. ;)

I think you're jumping to a conclusion too quickly.

For example, I am running on Linux, so it could be a Linux-only issue.

Also, it only takes over an existing browser window if there is one
open. In other words, if you just launch Mail & News and open an
attachment, it will open a new window. It's only after I have existing
browser windows, that I see the problem.

Incidentally, I've seen this problem since way back in the 1.1.X days
(not sure how long ago, but certainly before 1.1.14).

Interesting. Then it is either a regression or the others are using

I have:
Link Open Behavior: A new window
Links from other application: A new window.

Hopefully, this will be resolved once Release 2 comes out.

For what it's worth, I've the same problem with new windows. I have everything
set to open in a new window, but when I open an attachment from within
Mail & Newsgroups, it uses an existing browser window (and replaces the
content that was displayed with the content of the attachment).

I really wish I could get it to just open in a new (not just different)
window!
