I can confirm what Henry says, albeit I tried with SeaMonkey.
I think the reason is, there is only one profile, so no need to do a profile
selection.

no, if you don't have SeaMonkey running, including shutting down the QuickLaunch option, then
you can start the profile manager at any time, even if there is only one profile.

As I had quick launch active, that explains then why the -p didn't have an
effect.

The above test shows that Mozilla only sees the one profile, and it is
named 'Default'. Given that, I would have to guess that the .slt directory
with all the contents in it is the current one, and the other is not being
used.

... but that's just a guess. I think if you go into Edit -> Mail & Newsgroups
Account Settings, the select Local Folders, the local directory setting will
show the location of the profile directory in use.

However, this is for SeaMonkey - it may be different for older Mozilla
applications (this is the SeaMonkey news group though, right? :-) )

When you run Mozilla, to you have a "Switch Profile" on the "Tools" menu?
If so, that will launch the Profile Manager as well.

I found that. When I open it I get a box that's labeled "Available
Profiles" and in that box all that's listed is "default". It doesn't
say anything about .slt folders. So my question is, since I have two
.slt folders in my profile, which one is correct? The one full of
lots of stuff or the one that only has in it a folder called Trash and
a folder called Trash.cache? Do I need both? Do other people have two?

when you say mozilla, do you mean the old Mozilla Suite, or Mozilla
Firefox?

Mozilla 1.8.1.11 suite

Henry

I have no idea what 1.8.1.11 is. Mozilla Suite never went that high.
It was either Mozilla 1.7.13 which was the last official release or
1.8ba which never made it to release.

So, I'm presuming you have the old Mozilla Suite. If so, then close
Mozilla, and click on the windows start button, then run and enter:

mozilla.exe -p

this will start the Mozilla Profile Manager. How many profiles do you
see? If one, then go ahead and delete the .slt folder with the
trash.cache in it. I'm presuming that is when you deleted the cache,
this is the directory that it created.

Otherwise, go ahead and install SM. It will pick up your last Mozilla
Suite profile and start using that.

After Mozilla dropped the suite, they continued issuing nightlies on the
1.8 branch for quite a while, which identified as such. Before SeaMonkey
came to life, I continued to use them. That must be what Henry is using.
