problem (back in december !) with an
other computer (using Tiger), and solved
now without answer from anybody.

This is definitely NOT what you want to do. From what you said, I know that 
your port forwarding configuration will not work. You want both the in-port and 
the out-port to be 46185. If you have the in-port set to 80 and the out-port as 
46185, that means that incoming connections will only be accepted on port 80, 
and before they get to your computer they will be rerouted to port 46185. So no 
Freenet nodes will be able to connect to you through 46185 until you fix the 
configuration.

As Skinner Family wrote, this port is the only one that you need forwarded, but 
it has to be done correctly.

 - do not use trigger ports: port triggering implies that the ports are 
 closed after a time again - you want the port constantly open for 
 freenet (you're running a server, after all!)

since a few days, after having restaured (to give to a friend) an old 
PPC of mine (mac Tiger 10.4.11), it doesn't seem to accept to install 
Freenet.
When earlier I was using it though, I had it installed and it was 
running perfectly, but of course an older version of it.

Yes, there is a lot more to this networking stuff than I ever imagined.  I
made the above changes per the comments below and 12 hours later, no

At this point I need to determine if the problem is with Freenet, my router

Okay.  I double checked the router settings and the windows firewall settings.  
The router does ask which type of traffic, as does windows firewall.  UDP is 
set for the Opennet FNP; the other two ports are set to TCP.  All three allow 
traffic in both directions through the router.  If no other suggestions show 
up, I'll start with taking down the firewalls to see if anything improves.  
This is really strange... it should just work :-)  Thanks.

You do not need to forward FProxy and FCP unless you are planning to access your
home node from outside of your home... i.e. from some other computer (which can
be dangerous and compromise your anonymity under many situations).

When you have port-forwarded it usually asks you which type of traffic, did you
made sure to chose UDP and not TCP?

I use DLink router, and after some time running Freenet it needs to be restarted
(turnt off, and after about 40 seconds turnt back on). I suspect it's due to
something in it not liking prolonged UDP traffic, or maybe it's something else.

(3)  The log says something about the firewall blocking UDP or the server
being the problem. I can turn off the windows firewall if that will help.

(4)  I can turn off the router firewall which opens all the ports but would
do so only briefly to help diagnose the problem.

 

Any suggestions?

internet, download, whatever!

you aren't connected to any other freenet nodes.  Verify this by looking

Hi.
I have just installed the lasted stable version of freenet. (Node 
Version 0.5)
I'm running debian woody stable.

Everytime i click on a freenet site from the bookmarks, i get the 
following error:

Couldn't retrieve key: [EMAIL PROTECTED]/TFE//
Hops To Live: 15
Error: Route Not Found
Attempts were made to contact 0 nodes.
0 were totally unreachable.
0 restarted.
0 cleanly rejected.
0 backed off.
I have also tryed getting the GPL thingie it sugests to get for more 
references,
but i get the same error message.

The log also says somthing about bad node references. Maby that's the 
problem?

The box has direct internet connection through ethernet, without any 
routers.
And i hav'ent set up ant firewall roules that should block freenet.
(I tryed freenet before and it worked)

I'll atatch the log file. Hope that's allright!
How do i fix this?

You don't. You've just installed Freenet. It takes quite a while for a 
node to integrate itself in to the freenet network, just be patient. 
Leave the node running overnight and you'll get better results. The 
longer you have the node the faster it'll be.

This is probably due to the recent Rate limiting facilites more than to
NGRouting.. Ratelimiting will cause RNFs when your node overloads it

Well.. you could try increasing the size of the routing table maybe..

This probably is partly due to a bug or two..however.. there might also be
valid reasons for this behaviour..it is not impossible that your node
doesn't _have_ any more nodes to contact (your node might have reached its
request quota for all other nodes it knows about for instance etc.)

Yes.. information about other, new nodes are passed along within certain
freenet messages.

 e) is it easy to get involved in the freenet
 development?

Yes, quite easy.. however.. the code isn't eceptionally well documented..

first of all I want to thank the developers of freenet
and freenet related tools for their work. It is a
needed tool these days.

However, I have been using freenet for some time -
also before next generation routing started. My
general experience is that the performance has gone
worse:

1) After starting a new node version or not having it
online for a while the node sometimes fails to
establish a stable freenet connection. I fix this by
deleting all rouing files (*_a und *_b in the freenet
directoy) and downloading a new seednodes.ref file.
However, this does not always work on the first
attempt.
2) Even after having the node up for a wile and(!)

fails to route the request to other nodes than before
NG-routing. Wihtout NG routing I was able to have

Since I am a software engeneer my own I have the
impression that the ideas behind NG routing are
reasonable, but the algorithm itself is not stable,
yet. Esp in the special case of starting a node or
having one that it not permanently online. I came to
that conclusion because I have been reading the
support-archive and was surprised, that some people
even with NG-routing seem to have good performance (as
I experienced it without NG routing).

After upgrading to 5066, I can't get anything off Freenet. It connects to
some nodes after a while, but still says it can't finde a route. I have
upgraded to 5068, but still no luck. It worked before 5066 and I have not
changed any settings after upgrading. Whats wrong?

The routing table can be viewed at
http://localhost:/servlet/nodestatus/nodestatus.html

But in principle you are correct. If a node is integrated into the
network, not transient and able to receive inbound connections you ought
to be able to see inbound connections within a day or two.

You have bad references.  (or your node can't make outgoing

To configure your firewall you need to
1.  Let *ALL* outbound traffic from *ALL* local ports pass out through your
firewall onto the internet.  This is because Freenet sets up connections to
external nodes and there's no telling which local port numbers it will be
using at any time.  This is just the same as allowing outbound traffic from
an FTP client
and,
2.  Let *ONLY* inbound traffic *to your freenet port* pass from the internet
thru the firewall onto your computer.

Your freenet port by the way is the one that shows up on the first page of
the Configuration utility, or if you don't use that it's the line in
freenet.ini called listenPort

If your firewall is also a NAT router, you may also need to enable a mode on
the firewall called 'virtual server' - this ensures that inbound requests to
this port actually get routed to *your* computer - so you may need to enter
your PC's IP address into your firewall configuration.  If your firewall is
just software-based and installed on the same PC as freenet then you don't
need to do this step.

[freenet-support] route not found

I use gentoo, and as far as i can figure out everything is pretty up to date, 
including my seednode.ref  

when i first start the daemon, and i connect to the UI via my web browser 
everything seems fine.  then i click on one of the gateways provided (ie The 
Freedom Engine) and I get an error that tells me to check my web connection 
(which tells me that my node hasn't established any connections at all)

after a few minutes, when i click on a gateway, or the gpl, or the README, or 
anything, i get a different error:
Freenet






-Route Not Found







-Network Error







-Couldn't retrieve key: 
[EMAIL PROTECTED]/GPL.txt 
-Hops To Live: 15


-Error: Route Not Found


-Attempts were made to contact 0 nodes.

-0 were totally unreachable.
-0 restarted.
-0 cleanly rejected.

-The request couldn't even make it off of your node. Try again, perhaps with 
-the GPL to help your node learn about others. The publicly available seed 
-nodes have been very busy lately. If possible try to get a friend to give 
you -a reference to their node instead.


-Route Not Found messages mean that your node, or the rest of the network, 
-didn't find the data or enough nodes to send the request to. You should 
-retry, with the same Hops-To-Live; if it persists, there may be a problem
-check that your internet connection is working). Try reseeding your node,  
-and if that doesn't work, contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]



I've been running the daemon for almost 24 hours, so it seems to me that if 
everything was working right, i would be able to find some keys!  

I click the open connections link on the left side of the web UI, and it 
says there are no open connections.  Shouldn't some connections be open?  

Do i need to manually enter an IP to start the connection process correctly?  
i'm completely lost.  I want this thing to work so badly

Yuh, some connections should be open.  Although when you start it up, there
won't be many connections for a bit unless you start requesting stuff.  But
as you say, you've tried that by trying to retrieve gpl.txt and other files.

What does the logfile say?  freenet.log

[freenet-support] Route Not Found Error behind a LAN.

Hello.

I recently read an article about FreeNet and consequently downloaded
the program and installed it. But I have a problem - I can't retrieve
my key. I get the error Route Not Found. Is it possible that the
problem be my way to connect to the Internet - through? Or that I run
a firewall (The Freenet program has all the permissions to access the
Internet)?
What should I try and what should I read to find out how to fix this
problem?

There was a problem with the seednode harvester this-morning.

Try downloading http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/seednodes.ref into 
your Freenet directory, and restarting Freenet.
