You have a way to start Freenet without the tray? Does that not use the run.sh? The tray is not strictly necessary, and the currently deployed version is out of date. We have a new version of it written but it's not deployed yet. You can start Freenet without the tray by opening a terminal, navigating to the directory Freenet is installed to (with cd), and running ./run.sh start On Sat, Jun 6, 2015, 3:33 AM blupace wrote: Hey, , So I did a little testing. I think it's normal for the node to use a lot of CPU for a minute or so at the beginning -- how long does your 100% cpu usage last? How fast is your CPU? What does your wrapper.log (the end of it) say it's doing? Perhaps it's cleaning up your datastore, or something. How big did you set your datastore to be? Also, I think my node also uses 100% at the beginning, for a minute or so while it starts up. How long does yours stay at 100% for? The fact that it renders the rest of your system unusable suggests it could be using too much IO ... possibly because it's doing some maintenance on your datastore. You can double check this with "vmstat 5". The bi (bytes in) and bo (bytes out) columns show how much your system is reading/writing to the disk, and the last column wa shows how many tasks are waiting in line for IO access. ___ Support mailing list Support@freenetproject.org http://news.gmane.org/gmane.network.freenet.support Unsubscribe at http://emu.freenetproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/support Or mailto:support-requ...@freenetproject.org?subject=unsubscribe

Re: [freenet-support] Java cpu usage running amok, FMS crashed node
As I'm used to by now, it took multiple efforts to get the new Freenet version 1259 to connect to strangers; it seems to require a complete new install from scratch and no less will do. No way of updating works for me, FN has been whirling all night in a loop of restarting the old version and finding that it needs to be updated. But I got it working again, and decided to give FMS a try. Dl'd it over FN, started it. It gave me a DOS window 'FMS is started'. On the config page http://localhost/8080 only a blank page came up. The node disconnected immediately; the 'browse FN' page gave: Internal error: please report java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Could not initialize class freenet.support.HTMLEncoder at freenet.l10n.BaseL10n.addL10nSubstitution(BaseL10n.java:495) at freenet.clients.http.WelcomeToadlet.handleMethodGET(WelcomeToadlet.java:459) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(Unknown Source) at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(Unknown Source) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Unknown Source) at freenet.clients.http.ToadletContextImpl.handle(ToadletContextImpl.java:534) at freenet.clients.http.SimpleToadletServer$SocketHandler.run(SimpleToadletServer.java:794) at freenet.support.PooledExecutor$MyThread.realRun(PooledExecutor.java:228) at freenet.support.io.NativeThread.run(NativeThread.java:101) and my node restarted again. I guess FMS conflicted with my mail server, it has a web interface at localhost/8080 that I forgot about. Switched it off but it will be a while before I try FMS again. Both help to keep my box at least useable to some extent while java is claiming the whole machine. Both allow for setting priority of apps. PL has added functions like average CPU consumption of a process over time. Of java that's 43%, so very near to the 50% max (1 core of 2). It is not a memory issue it seems. Java takes 103,500 K now. At this moment there's yet another FN version out and update didn't do its job again so Freenet is disconnected & it's back to re-installing once more. There should be other profiling apps that actually debug the program's (freenet's) internal functions -- to see whether the cpu is doing garbage collection work, or other dumb things :) . Thanks for your response, Dennis. I doubt I can do much with debugging, I am not a programmer. What would be a tool to search for? Am already using JavaRa for cleaning up old versions of Java. Any other tips on what I can do to get a functioning node that does update and doesn't try to take over my machine? The new 1258 forced me to wipe the entire FN install once more, including the whole data folder this time, in order to get FN to connect to strangers. Even just keeping freenet.ini was enough to let FN sitting there connecting to 0. What I find strange is that I seem to have a unique problem, I see no one else with something

Try running "update-java-alternatives" on a console/terminal ... The most likely explanation is that you have GIJ/GCJ installed as well as the Sun JVM, and your distribution is defaulting to it for some reason. Its been up for hours now. I pulled a completely new tarball and restarted. It behaved very differently on startup. Or to screw up majorly, he could add /usr/local/bin to /etc/ld.so.conf ;) (dont to that!) you should definitely try the export commands we gave you earlier instead. it's the "suggested" way to do it. otherwise you'd have to put all the other tools in your bin too (tnameserv, jar, javac...) your shell will look at the PATH environment variable and check all the directories there for finding executables (e.g. when you enter "java"). So just append /usr/java/bin or whatever (using ":" as delimiter) to your PATH environment variable using the export command. ___ support mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://hawk.freenetproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/support

I'm not sure, if you can run freenet with java 1.4.1. If you run into problems, try the older version: 1.3.1_06 http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/download.html -Sami ___ support mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://hawk.freenetproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/support

Kaffe version 1.0.7 will work, and Sun Java 1.3 or 1.4 will work. IBM Java may work. I wouldn't hold my breath for gcj. -- Greg Wooledge | "Truth belongs to everybody." Apparently not. Freenet does not attempt to maintain compatibility with java 1.1, only with Kaffe and the current Sun JVM. Re: [freenet-support] Java
Java is included with some operating systems, but not always. You may download a copy of Java for your operating system from http://java.sun.com/ - you want the "Java Runtime Environment". Believe me, in admitting you don't know everything, you know more than most :-) Ian.
