Small change of subject: Does anyone here have this VHS tape? I am not going to beg for a copy, but I wanted to tell you guys that in the next few months I am going to finally start another DVD video project, this one an effort to preserve video relevant to software collectors, and I have contacts who are willing to lend me their copies of the Sierra promotional tapes of the late 1980s for it. Also scheduled was the "making of" Wing Commander VHS tape, which is why I bring it up because I don't have a copy. The DVD produced by the project would be sold a few bucks above cost (probably through CustomFlix so that I don't have to deal with fullfillment). The goal of the project would be to: - Professionally dump the video in 4:2:2 for proper mastering to DVD's 4:2:0 (no cheap DV conversions) - Clean up the video (remove noise, color correction, exposure/white level correction) - Clean up the audio (remove noise, remaster audio (game soundtracks) where appropriate) - Author to DVD with simple menu and chapter points - Professional-grade MPEG-2 encoding All of this was done for MindCandy so I already have the tools and knowledge. The scope of this project was "behind the scenes" and/or "making-of" videos -- inside trivia stuff that any collector would drool over. So, so far, I can only think of four: - Sierra promo videos (1989 and 1990 I believe I have contacts for, were there any more?) - 7th Guest "making-of" bundled with early versions (I have this) - Wing Commander VHS tape (I do not have this) Can anyone think of any more? (Also: There are some CDROM videos that may fall into this scope, like the Ken & Roberta interview snippets on CDROM bundled with the Robert Williams collection, and I can remember a Robert Williams promo interview on some CDROM gaming multimedia magazine that was popular in the mid 1990s, but I haven't decided on including those yet. How about what GameTZ uses *exactly*? Here's the link: http://www.mobygames.com/misc/ugtz_download I cleared it with my partners, so you (and any other website implementors on this list) are allowed to use it provided that you make it obvious you are linking to MobyGames somehow, either through text or a tiny graphic or something. (Link text of just "more info", etc. would not be enough.) We provided the little icon that UGTZ/GameTZ uses, so feel free to save it from their pages and use it. If you need larger icons or ads, you can find them here: http://www.mobygames.com/info/link/ The output of the above link is very simple: Banjo-Kazooie; Nintendo 64; http://www.mobygames.com/game/sheet/gameId=3583 Sonic Adventure; Dreamcast; http://www.mobygames.com/game/sheet/gameId=3530 Quake II; DOS; http://www.mobygames.com/game/sheet/gameId=405 ..etc. For older PC games, most collectors on this list will only look at the "DOS" and "Booter" platforms. Sorry, no C64 or Atari yet, but they are planned to be implemented. If you have any questions, just ask. Again, our only requirement is that you make it obvious it's MobyGames you're linking to. At least 20% so that you can avoid paying PMI. - No matter what you are approved for, don't buy a house/take a mortgage where your mortgage payment is more than 50% of your take-home pay. Here's a copy of the letter I wrote him: ---quote begin--- In your excellent Infonotes document, you write that you can't believe that Amnesia required you to reboot the machine to exit the game. I can't believe it either, because what you were playing was a pirated version "converted" to DOS. It never existed commercially in that form. The original game is bootable, meaning it had a custom OS and booted directly from the floppy disk. While rare for the IBM PC, over 100 of these PC bootable disks were created during the first decade of the IBM PC's life. You can get a list of all the PC bootable games we have documented at MobyGames here: http://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/a,4/?o=a1 If you'd like to verify my information, check out the rap sheet on Amnesia here: http://www.mobygames.com/game/sheet/p,4/gameId,1775/ Specifically, check out the diskette label here: http://www.mobygames.com/game/covers/gameCoverId,14584/gameId,1775/ which clearly says IBM PC/XT/etc. and "boot this side". So now that you know it's bootable, the request to reboot the machine to exit the game is no more unreasonable than bootable games on other platforms. So could you be fair to the poor, always-picked-on-as-a-gaming-platform IBM PC and adjust your note about Amnesia? I don't think it should be judged on the converted pirated copy you got a hold of :-) quote end -- http://www.MobyGames.com/ The world's most comprehensive gaming database project. -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list. I was always a fan of EA up until about 1990-1991 because their manuals always had this great sense of fun -- like a kid discovering a new toy (which, if you think about the industry, they were). Of particular note were the inside-cover anti-piracy "stories" (they were rarely a notice, but rather a story written in the context of the game asking players to consider the ramifications of software piracy). A few were duds, but most were clever. As a TOTAL aside, the guys who did Budokan for the IBM PC embedded the anti-piracy message into the program executable itself -- and I mean this in the most literal sense possible. Type this exactly at a DOS prompt: "type budo.com" (without the quotes) and you'll see what I mean. A proper cease and desist letter would be something that has three paragraphs: - First paragraph introduces yourself or your identity, and links you to the intellectual property you are going to talk about - Second paragraph lists the infractions (what the guy is doing wrong) - Third paragraph asks that the person "cease and desist" (exact wording is important!) said behavior None of these paragraphs necessarily need to be very long, or even formatted into three paragraphs, but it's typical form if you're not a lawyer. [SWCollect] Vendio/Assist services? (and CGExpo)
I just won an auction where the seller was using Vendio services, and I have to say it was an extremely slick end-user experience for payment. Multiple payment types were handled automatically by Vendio (including auto-forwarding to PayPal) and, as a potential seller myself, I was impressed. Does anyone here on this list use or know someone who uses these "auction assist" services and find them worthwhile? Anyone know of a more appropriate one for infrequent/casual sellers? (I ask because every time I start getting things organized to auction off, I get overwhelmed by the number of options I have available to me. I end up scrapping the whole idea after looking at rules, fees, and options for four hours...) PS: I (and Brian and Dave) are going to the Classic Gaming Expo in Las Vegas the weekend of August 9th. We'll be at the MobyGames table, so feel free to stop by and chat. We're not explicitly selling anything; we're just trying to get more people involved in contributing to the MobyGames database -- spread the good word and all that. Re: [SWCollect] Value of Apple ][ Goldfinger
Dan Chisarick wrote: That's actually another interesting point. Is an emulator which comes "close enough" really good enough? I've seen some really damn good emulators that are works of art, but they're not perfect. Not perfect in the sense that the sounds still aren't quite right. The joystick emulation is a hair bit different. Even if you stuffed a PC inside an Apple case (or whatever classic box) you'd know. Personally, with really old games, you had to use your imagination a fair amount to begin with :) I consider this a logical extension. For me, a 5.5 lbs laptop that can emulate vintage Apples and a C64 is more than adequate. I'll play Choplifter with the cannon fire sound just a bit off, or a little scratchiness in the already scratchy music of a computer that had no tone generator to begin with and be happy. You forgot the biggest giveaway of some emulators: No scanlines. When I first started playing with MAME half a decade ago I noticed how well it worked, but how non-authentic the graphics looked. Only when they started adding their "scanlines" options did it start to look like the arcade game (for me). The only emu that came really really damn close was Vector Dream (I think that's the name). The author was an actual arcade operator for years, so he programmed in 60Hz hum, static and popping, sound of coin hitting the box, etc. and the best part was he also included BURN-IN. It was hilarious to see "INSERT COIN" and "HIGH SCORE" burnt into the screen! I made a 50-second sound loop of "arcade ambience" to be included as background noise and sent it to him, and while the emu was available, it came with my sound. If you turned the sound way up and the lights way down, and played the game standing up (or maybe sitting on a stool), it was *almost* like being in a 1980's arcade. Update: You can read a bit about it here: http://www.classicgaming.com/features/articles/vectordreams/ And download it (and my ambience file) here: http://caesar.logiqx.com/html/emus/multi/vector_dream.shtml -- Jim Leonard ([EMAIL PROTECTED])http://www.oldskool.org/ Want to help an ambitious games project? http://www.mobygames.com/ Or check out some trippy MindCandy at http://www.mindcandydvd.com/ -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list. Re: [SWCollect] (SWCollect) Reshrinking issues, SSI collectors lookthis way :)
One of these days I would LOVE to take pictures of all sorts of original vs. re-shrinked wrap, but unfortunately I don't have the time. :-( Suffice it to say that the ones where the box was put on upside down is MOST DEFINITELY a re-wrap. I worked in Babbage's and Egghead in the late 1980s and early 1990s and my co-workers did that routinely (pissed me off to the point where I would crack the wrap on them and re-wrap them properly). Something that has been re-wrapped should have "rough" or uneven seams/lines/edges where the wrap halves were burnt together. Stefan Lindblom wrote: Howdy strangers! Alright, I think I need a serious lesson about this whole reshrinking business. I just came home from the post office, with 5 shrinked SSI games. 4 goldbox games, of which Pools of Darkness was of real importance since I didnt have it shrinked before. I stand here confused though, cause I smell a rat. I carefully go over the wraps on the goldbox games, compare them to each other, and come to some conclusions. One of the games was Gateway, and that one looks genuinely wrapped. It has the orange HD disk drive req sticker, a round blue ibm sticker, a Get-a-way sticker, and some kind of .um.. anti-theft thing? Anyway, that looks ok, as it should be. I check the sides of the box. And there are no.. hmm.. line? I need to improve my English :( On some of my SSI games, there appears to be 2 halves "glued" together on each of the long sides of the box. Yet on this one, it appears to be more or less a whole wrapping pulled over the box. It has that little "folding" thing on the two short sides(ie up and down on the box). Am I making any sense here? Anyway, the Pools box have those "splits" on the long sides, as does several of the other goldbox games I have since before. Pools have another issue as well though... and this drives me crazy. I guess most of you know what a goldbox looks like. It consists of two pieces, a bottom and a top(lid) piece. Well, in this case one of the pieces has been placed upside down! Imagine how that looks :( One of the other sealed games, also with the splits at the long sides, was in a really worn shape, impossibly worn for a sealed game. Sigh.. Anyway, I am sure most of you have at least a few goldbox games. But could someone who is as dedicated to them as I am give me some feedback here? I would like to hear something about this before I bring out my axe and contact the seller of these. Yours truly :) /Stefan -- Jim Leonard ([EMAIL PROTECTED])http://www.oldskool.org/ Want to help an ambitious games project? http://www.mobygames.com/ Or check out some trippy MindCandy at http://www.mindcandydvd.com/ -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list. I got mine the years they came out, but only to play the Pool of Radiance "quadrilogy" (Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, Pools of Darkness) while in college with friends. (Being college, days, I would go to sleep while my friends would keep playing, then when the sun came up they would go to bed and I would resume playing ;-) And for a time we would all "multiplay" it, where we would each assign ourselves to a character and would dictate what each would do in battle -- kind of like four dungeonmasters playing a single-player game at once.) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I do not necessarily agree with this. In fact I bought a bunch of new C64 games from a former C64 dealer and got a "new" Windwalker where the back was upside down. All the games were new (he did not sell used merchandise) so I'm guessing it was ok, the guy who bought it from me told me they DO come like that sometimes, he was a serious collector of shrinkwrapped games. In the time I worked at Babbage's from 1987-1989 and Egghead during the summers of 1989-1992, I unloaded shipments at least once a week, sometimes twice, and I *never once* saw a new package where the box was assembled with one half upside down. So this is where my information comes from. It is possible that very limited-run, low-budget, cheap publishers may have had this happen (I'm thinking rare/uncommon titles here), but I never saw it from EA, Sierra, etc. -- Jim Leonard ([EMAIL PROTECTED])http://www.oldskool.org/ Want to help an ambitious games project? http://www.mobygames.com/ Or check out some trippy MindCandy at http://www.mindcandydvd.com/ -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list. [SWCollect] Half and Bidville experiences?
Anyone used Half.com and has experiences to share? I have some esoteric (read: crappy) items to list, but I'm not sure they'd fetch more than $4. (Lest you think I would be wasting my time, I have nearly 100 to sell, so $400 or more is not chump change.) If I sell something on ebay for $4, and I take paypal, and I list it properly (software:games and software:vintage), I would pretty much lose money, I'm sure. So I was wondering if anyone had tried listing items on half and how well the experience went. Along those lines, I see that Chris and others have stuff listed in bidville, and it seems to be re-listed automatically. Has Chris and others actually sold stuff there? I was under the impression that their traffic was less than 2% of ebay's traffic. All suggestions welcome. I don't really want to sell lots of 10 because the entire lot would go for $5 and then I'd feel like an idiot. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oh yes, I do a good business there. I don't use ebay unless they have a free listing day, they just piss me off, like Chris I guess. I just add a bit extra to my prices because of the high fee and let the stuff sit. Not sure what you are listing though, the stuff that sells best are items that have an official half listing. If you are adding new items that have not been listed before I have not had that much success. I'm going to dump a lot of stuff I bought to enter into MobyGames -- esoteric games where I thought I could find a nugglet of gold in a trash heap (Captain Quazaar, Reloaded, Loadstar, etc.). Never happened, so I'd like to get at least $4 for each title. Sadly, I'm sure this stuff hasn't been listed before. I may do 10 titles just to get the feel of ebay (yes, I have not actually listed anything for sale there yet). In the listing of the popular games ask people to check all games you have for sale under your ID, that way you might get a bit more traffic on the new listings. C.E. Forman wrote: I love BidVille. From a seller's perspective it's better than eBay. No fees, one page to fill out info instead of five. Yeah, the traffic is far less than eBay but it relists automatically up to, I believe, 20 times, and you can run month-long auctions, so it's very low-maintenance. The strategy I use is, list stuff with a fair (but not outright cheap) starting bid, then make the BuyItNow what you'd like to get, but not too unreasonably high. A lot of my BidVille sales have been BuyItNow, from people who don't want to wait for the auction to end. Get the bulk-loader if you're planning on listing a lot at once. Thanks very much for your experiences. How many units a month do you move out of your bidville account? More than 10? Normally I'm a patient guy, but I need to move this stuff in less than six weeks, so I'm trying to gauge if it's worth it or not. Also, if bidville has no fees, then how do they make money? A percentage of the closing bid? -- Jim Leonard ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) World's largest electronic gaming project:http://www.MobyGames.com/ A delicious slice of the demoscene:http://www.MindCandyDVD.com/ Various oldskool PC rants and ramblings: http://www.oldskool.org/ -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list.
