Re: how do you move a file with w/e

2017-05-29 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
It's Control+x to cut to clipboard. The file won't move until you paste
it.
If you don't want deleted files in the recycle bin, hit shift+delete and
they're permanently gone.

On my system, the files are in Program files (X86)/GW Micro/Window-eyes.
They are called WE_startup.wav and WE_shutdown.wav

Re: Mute/Unmute Synthesizer

2017-05-10 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
OK sorry Georges.
I have my speech and other audio going into separate channels on a
mixer, so I can just mute whichever channel I want.
When I'm broadcasting, I use my trusty old Appolo II, so I don't
have to broadcast my screen reader output to the world.

Re: Mute/Unmute Synthesizer

2017-05-10 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
I don't think so Georges, assuming you want to be using your speakers
for something else while you're listening to your speech on headphones.
If you don't want to be able to route something through the speakers,
while you're listening to your speech through headphones, then inserting
your headphone jack will probably mute the speakers anyway.

Re: Choosing From Where Speech Comes

2017-05-10 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Georges

You'll need to be using a different sound device for your speech. Then
you can direct it to that device, with headphones coming out of it, via
the synthesizer setting dialogue. Select the speech synth, and tab to
the combo box which lists the available sound devices.

Speech pausing after a period.

2017-05-07 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

I still can't get my speech to pause after a period at the end of a
sentence. I think it used to, but now it just plows on, which doesn't
help with meaning.

Any suggestions?

Hi Mike and all

For some reason Chris's link didn't work for me in Firefox, but it does
in IE, which I don't understand, but then, that applies to a lot of
things.

Pausing at the end of a sentence

2017-04-19 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

I'm using the latest W-E, with Vocalizer Expressive Samantha.
I think a new development is that the voice no longer pauses after the
period at the end of a sentence. I think this used to happen. As usual,
I may have changed something in attempting to resolve another problem.
Any ideas?

What Window-Eyes internet setting have I accidentally changed?

2017-04-14 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

I've been recently reviewing W-E settings, following a crisis which
turned out to be more to do with my graphics card than anything else.

Now, I'm getting a line of numbers above a link name, and the "like" or
"Thumbs up" emoticon is now being rendered as a series of zeros.

Any ideas?
Thanks for any help

And for those who would monopolise, the prospects for screwing more
money out of their friends in government agencies don't look so rosy
under a Trump administration which would only get interested if the

Re: Failure to hold VFO to account

2017-03-17 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
I happen to think, on a humanitarian rather than on a political level,
that some goods and services, defined as essential, should be shielded
from market forces. I would include health care (I'm British), and
access technology.
In this category, people like clinicians and the developers of
technology should be paid well for their expertise, but the price should
not be armped up by supply and demand, scarcity value, ETC. The
prospect of somene else's profit margin, over and above proper salaries,
preventing someone with cancer from receiving treatment, or a blind
person being able to have the means of cummunicating in a digital world,
is obscene. And "That's just the way it is" is defeatist talk in my
opinion.

Touch screen phones

2017-03-16 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi Matt

Yes, I find my phone bluetoothed to a Braille note taker, while being a
bit more cumbersome, is much more reliable, and writing in grade 2
braille is much faster (for me at least) than I could ever achieve via
an on screen keyboard.

Incidentally, my note taker is a Braille Sense Plus, which I became
aware of because it was developed in conjunction with GW Micro. As I
bought mine, GW dropped it, or was dropped (sad).

Re: Window-Eyes app for Reaper released.

2017-01-31 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Great stuff Tom

As a Window-eyes user, I've been hovering on the fringes of this list
for ages, trying t make Sonar work, with varying degrees of success.
Your efforts have now made me ready to commit, along with Chris's praise
of recent Reaper improvements.
So, he said wishfully thinking, is there any one place where I can get
hold of clear tutorial information, and a list or lists of relevant
keystrokes?
As I wander towards retirement, home recording beyond midi beckons.

Best wishes

Re: Braille display stuff

2017-01-26 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Vaughan, I agree with you completely.
I have always believed that the corporate model has no place in the
access technology field, since it puts profit above humanity. This has
nothing to do with paying people who know what they're talking about a
proper rate for their knowledge and commitment, it's the other layers of
hangers-on who are the problem. If there's a choice between first class
support and the amount of this year's dividend, the former will be
sacrificed to the latter.

Re: Vocalizer Expressive installation problem

2017-01-18 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi Jay and thanks for your suggestion

It turned out that it was an older version of the voice installer, which
was either outdated or corrupted.
I was initially confused because Samantha seemed not to be available. I
had to select American English first of course. Having done thatt,
overwritten the installer, and installed again, it now works.

Vocalizer Expressive installation problem

2017-01-18 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all
With the latest Window-eyes I'm using the Tom Premium High voice
successfully. I also have Samantha, but this voice will not work. I
have installed the voice and what I believe to be the correct
authorisation file. The voice now shows up in the list, but pressing
"activate" produces silence until the synth settings are reverted.
Any thoughts anyone?

Thank you very much for this David. Also, how good to meet someone who,
like me, was not born to brevity. If something's worth saying, it's
worth saying properly. Also, you are to be congratulated on your

puts us anglophones to shame.

In sharp comparison to a recent presidential election, how refreshing it
is to hear opinions actually supported by facts!

Help with Sonar 7 or 8's midi event list

2016-11-22 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

Having finally got W-E9.5.3 to read the standard track window, it no
longer reads the event list. The window is there, but doesn't read.
Also, it used to say "star" when a track was selected with comma. This
is no longer true.
Is default.set sufficient, since the Sonar set files are no longer shown,
and I've been told that Sonar Enhance.wepm is no longer necessary.

Help please!.

Sonar 7 and 8 no longer read the standard track lay-out with the arrow keys

2016-11-10 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

I have the latest window-eyes, and Sonar (7 or 8) has suddenly stopped
reading the tracks with the arrow keys - up/down, left/right.

Relevantly or not, NVDA reads the tracks as Window-Eyes used to.

Should I call support to resolve this, or does anyone have a handy
suggestion?

I am running the Sonar Enhance ap, and I have the .reg file installed.
Completely at a loss, and this is important for my work as a musician.

Thanks for any help

Re: The future of Window-eyes

2016-10-03 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Thank you Tom for being constructive as ever.

We must talk to people assuming that they are concerned about the
purpose of their product, rather than simply looking
for a means of maximising their revenue. Talking to the latter is
pointless, so let's at least assume that there is, in the policy of the
company, some distinction between something like access technology
and optional luxury products.

For example, whatever health care system we live under, we hope that
our doctor has some interest in curing us, rather than in merely
maximising his/her personal profit.

I personally think there has to be a sharp distinction
between getting paid well for doing something well, and making profit
for its own sake.

Recent change in Windows7 start menu

Has anyone else lost the list view in the start menu under Windows7?
If I tab passed the search box, it either gets stuck on repeating

I don't know when or why this happened, so I'm wondering if it's just me

Sonar 7 Producer with the latest W-E

Hi Sonar users

Sonar used to happily read tracks, but now it has stopped. I downloaded

Is this likely to be my problem. If so, how do I fix it? Alternatively,
what else could suddenly cause Sonar and Window-Eyes to stop

Re: Edit boxes in Firefox and Internet Explorer

2016-09-22 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi Ahsley

Thanks for trying, but I don't think I explained the problem properly.
I know how to turn browse mode on and off. The problem is that, when
browse mode is off, I should be able to edit what I've written. When
this happens, for whatever reason, the edit box goes silent, and normal
reviewing with the arrow keys produces only silence. The whole box
reads with browse mode turned on, but it obviously can't be edited. So
far, the only way I've found to make the box speak when browse mode is
off is to close and reopen W-E.
I hope that's clearer.

Edit boxes in Firefox and Internet Explorer

2016-09-21 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Even with the latest W-E (windows7 64 bit), I still find that I'm
suddenly unable to review an edit box, and I have to close and restart
W-E so that the edit box starts behaving properly with browse mode off.
With browse mode on, I can hear what I've just written, but I can't
change it.

Also, has anyone found a way of making Facebook comments behave like
standard edit boxes? At the moment, while the cursor can be anywhere in

Off topic question - latest Skype

2016-07-20 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

On installing the latest Skype, I got an error message about possible ad
blocking software in Internet Explorer, and I could not sign in. Going
back to an earlier version has fixed this, but I wondered if this was
behavior others had experienced with the latest Skype?

For now, I have to keep hitting "not now" when the program is so
desperately inviting me to do what it laughably calls "upgrade".

Re: selecting text and f8 key

2016-07-15 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi Don

The shift key is no good to you in browse mode. All you need to do is
press F8 at the biginning of the selection, and then arrow down, or page
down, or use any means you like to get to the end of the selection, and
press F8 again. This is with browse mode turned on remember.
Conventional selection will work inside edit boxes with browse mode
turned off.

Re: Wimamp problem

2016-07-12 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi russ

Press control+p for preferences, find output plug ins in the treeview,
and tab to the one you're using - Wave or Direct Sound. Tab once more
and press spacebar on "configure". Tab through there, exploring the
various tabs, and you should find reference to "volume control". Make
sure this is checked. In the Wave output plug in, there is an
alternative volume control, if you don't want Winamp's volume to change
as, for example your screen reader's speech volume changes.
I still love Winamp because of the plug ins and their configurability.

Interestingly, my experience is somewhat different, in that the Equaliser

Hi all

Rod sent me this reply, but I'm sending it to the list, since I feel
we're often unsure as to which inconsistencies to lay at the door of the
screen reader, and which at the dor of Windows.
In this case, it seems to be Windows, and thanks for this Rod.
I've realocated my default sound device, and reassigned Winamp's output
plug in to go to the sound device I previously had as default because
it's simply a better quality device and I broadcast with it.

rod and anyone else who's interested

Yes, that's how it's supposed to work and, most of the time it does.
The Prolific USB to Serial convertor I use for my old Apolo II comes up
every time at startup if selected. But, as I said in my last post on
this subject, the sound device associated with my Vocalizer Expressive
voice, changes occasionally, and on an apparently random basis. Does
anyone know why?

Re: directing window-eyes to go through a different sound device

2016-05-25 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
I have a Vocalizer voice assigned to a USB sound device. On Start up,
Window-Eyes occasionally decides that it's routed to a different sound
device which, of course it isn't.

I'll be interested to know if you or anyone else has similar experience
of this.

Or, alternatively, write your message, simply press the alt key, and
arrow up to where it says "attach files". Pressing enter on that gets
you a standard dialogue. Press "open" when you've located the file, and
OK if you want to use the default encoding used by Beckie.
Job done.

W-E9.4 and replying to comments in mobile Facebook

2016-03-09 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

I haven't yet tried this with Internet Explorer, but in Mobile Facebook
with the latest Firefox and W-E9.4, when I reply to a comment, as
distinct from simply adding a comment, having written my reply, and hit
the button, all the keys on the main keyboard say "not a valid key press".
Fortunately, the mouse keys still work, and I can hit alt+left arrow to
get back to the previous page.
Is this just my experience, or anyone else's?

Typing addresses into firefox

2016-03-06 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

I don't have "suggestions" selected in Firefox, but still it announces
what I'm writing when I type a URL, as if it's trying to second guess me.
How do I stop this, because I find it irritating. If I want to search
for an address, I'l tab to "search using Google"; otherwise, I'd rather
be left in peace when typing what I think/hope is the correct address.
I find Windows's general assumption that everyone is always searching
for things, and nobody actually knows where anything is, rather
patronising.

Re: Fire Fox Work around?

2016-01-25 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
I'm curious to know why some links behave like this for me in Firefox,
and not others.

One example of this kind of link is found at
http://ocado.com

Wade through all the rubbish at the top of the page until you get to the
"log in" link. For me, this link does nothing when I press enter on it,
but it works in IE.

Any thoughts?

Re: Opening Web Links in Becky

2016-01-14 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
For accessing mails which have primarily been designed to read
on the Web, rather than as plain text, if I tab from the open message,
there is usually a file called something like text to HTML. If you
press the applications key or right click on that, one of the menu
options is open with. Pressing enter on that gives you a list which, in
my case at least, includes Firefox. Selecting that gets me the Web
based email properly displayed with all its links.

Thanks Tom
I'll give that a try. Are you using Explorer, Firefox, both or neither?
It seems to make a difference.
Incidentally can anyone explain why some controls may show up in one
browser, but not in another?

Re: web vissum work around

2015-12-24 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Thanks Mark

It turns out someone had unchecked that box, since they thought it would
"help".

If anyone else finds themselves in this position, since W-E will crash
as soon as you try to get into about:config, you'll need to close W-E,
get yourself into "about:config" and get some eyes to make sure you've
found "config warning", make it true again, get out of there, and restart W-E.

Having done that, the turn autoload and browse mode off procedure works
as you said it would.

Thanks again

Re: web vissum work around

2015-12-23 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Nor on this one Mark.

I just tried it and, after W-E stopped talking, my sighted wife and I
managed to shut down Firefox from Task Manager, and W-E came up, but not
working properly - (win+d would not get me the desktop). After closing
W-e and restarting it, I'm now back to normal but, without sighted
support, the rest is silence!
Windows7-64 W-E9.3.1 latest Firefox.
Incidentally, at my first attempt, W-E said "browse mode not available",
so I couldn't turn it off if I tried.

Re: web vissum work around

2015-12-23 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Mark and all

My system seems mysteriously to have bypassed the "I'll be careful"
button, so the only way I can access about:config is to turn autoload
and browse mode off before I type "about:config" whereupon, on pressing
enter, I go straight into it, with no button required.
Does anyone know why?

Re: strange behavior when connecting Hims braille sense

2015-12-22 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi Eden

In my installation instructions for the Hims driver, I notice that it
says "note, you may have to close and restart Window-eyes before braille
appears".

To do this press control+alt+F4, and then enter to activate the OK
button to close Window-eyes. Then press control+alt+w to restart it.

Good luck

Changes in how 9.3.1 behaves

2015-12-17 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all
1
I find that the first word in a file or folder name is often repeated.
For example, I have a folder called Misc Christmas" and W-E will now say
"Misc Misc Christmas".

2
In at least some edit boxes, how I can read the box has changed. For
example, in Winamp, when editing the tag information with alt+3, If I
enter a publisher in the "publisher" edit box, up and down arrows will
no longer read what I just wrote, whereas left and right arrows will
read it character by character, and the whole edit box will read only if
I tab out of it and back again.

Re: Latest Skype and W-E9.3

2015-12-17 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Chris

I'm using the latest Toolkit but, again, I was a bit premature in asking
the question, because I took a look at the braille displays, and a
display was selected which I don't have. Why this was a particular
problem for the Skype ap I don't know, but I tried to unselect it by
just going to "none" and saving the settings, whereupon the non-existent
braille display would come back and cause the error. Eventually, I
realised that I had to "activate" "none", which sounds a bit
counter-intuitive, but I now know that "none" has to be activated to
make it stick. OK, just in case anyone else goes through that. Skype
isn't causing the error any more, but I'm still curious as to why the
braille display suddenly became a problem when I opened Skype.
9.3.1 is working well, and I haven't had any more of those crashes with
Firefox so far, for which I'm extremely grateful.

Thanks

This is a problem that's been around for a while, and I wonder if anyone
has a solution.
Using Windows7 and, now the latest W-E, I've just been trying to listen
to this link in Explorer and Firefox.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06rwpnz

In Explorer, I see no "play" or "listen" button at all, but it will play
the short sound clips.
In firefox, I see no main listen button, but I do see a "listen in
pop-out player" link, which causes the Adobe Flash plug in to crash.
Incidentally, this also happens with NVDA.
If I close down the screen reader and reload the page, it will play, but
reopening W-E causes the crash again and all is silence.
Any thoughts?

Re: Appolo II Externa with 9.3.1 - problem solved

2015-12-16 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi again all

Problem fixed. One or both of 2 things solved it.

I unchecked a "use buffers" setting in the ports advanced settings, and
found that databits had mysteriously changed to 7 instead of 8.

As a separate bit of advice, Windows is quite capable of changing the
comport setting that will work with your speech synth without telling
you. In the case of the USB to serial convertor, if your speech synth
won't work at all, go to the device manager and check the port number
it's using, which may occasionally change for reasons which I certainly
don't understand.

Good luck

Appolo II Externa with 9.3.1

2015-12-16 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

My trusty Apollo II External, which I use when I don't want speech to be
broadcast, works through a Prolific USB to Serial Convertor, which
Windows says is "working properly". The port number is correct, and the
other port settings have not changed. When I switch to this synth via
the voice rotor, apollo just comes up with "Sigma9 0" ETC.

Any ideas?

Jart often does this for me too. Sometimes, a file will load and
nothing speaks at all Closing and reopening the file and at least the
text speaks, but, as you say shift+down arrow doesn't speak the selected

Re: W-e Not reliably selecting my speech sound device

2015-12-03 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi and thanks.

My problem is that I don't understand why it selects the right device
sometimes on startup, but not at others, when it appears to make an
arbitrary selection. I'm guessing there's sometimes a discrepancy
between when USB becomes available, and when W-E selects the ports
available, but maybe not.

W-e Not reliably selecting my speech sound device

2015-12-03 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

While on the subject of sound device selection, I have Vocalise Samantha
as my default software speech, with a USB sound device as its chosen
sound card. On startup, sometimes the selected device comes up properly,
and sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, W-E selects a device of its
choice instead. Fortunately, I have trusty Apollo in the voice rotor,
so I can correct this, save the settings, and wait to see what happens
next time I start my computer.
does anyone know why W-E is randomly making sound card selections other
than mine?

Error reports

2015-11-18 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

Does anyone actually review submitted error reports?
I ask because Firefox and W-E between them keep causing an annoying
crash, and I keep submitting error reports containing, I assume, more or
less identical error data. In the "optional comments", I often include
my email address, and I ask if it's worth repeatedly sending in what may
be the same error report, since I don't want to waste the staff's time,
let alone mine.
No response to this question so far, which is why I'm sending it to the
list, in order to, maybe, get an answer.

Virtual View, OCR and Ebay CAPTCHAS

2015-11-09 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all
If I ask a question about an Ebay item, I sometimes get asked to solve a
CAPTCHA before I can send my question to the seller.
The fact that this doesn't always happen may make it harder to answer my
question. However, if you have encountered this, have you managed to
resolve the "numbers in the image" with W-E's Virtual View?
With the Windows TIF filter installed, W-E says "no text found". Has
anyone else made this work? If so how please..

W-E at startup

2015-10-23 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

This may be a minor quibble but, normally when I press control+backslash,
I expect W-E's control panel to get focus automatically.
On startup, after log in, pressing control+backslash produces silence,
but alt+tab gets me to the control panel. If I then shut down and
restart W-E, control+backslash brings the control panel into immediate
focus.
What is it about W-E at startup which is different, and is it likely to
effect the screen reader's operation in any other way?

Control+s in Winamp

2015-10-16 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

Can anyone suggest why control+s no longer opens the "save playlist"
dialogue in winamp?
Control+j and control+o still work, so I'm completely mystified.

Re: Having trouble with edit fields...

Hi

You can set browse mode to turn on and off automatically when, for
instance, W-E finds you in an edit box. That may help.

Paulette
There is in fact a working version of The Qube. I use it, and it's fine.
I'll check the exact version number, and send it to you if you like.

IE11 and W-E9.2

2015-09-25 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all

I occasionally find that when writing in an edit box in Facebook, the
arrow keys no longer speak the text for me to edit it. If I shut down
W-E, the speech comes back in that edit box. Sorry I can't be specific
about when and why this happens, which is why I'm asking the question
here I guess.

Re: Amazon customer feedback star ratings

2015-09-10 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi and thank you
Yes it does sometimes, but it depends on which kind of mail you're
getting from Amazon. It's different if, for instance, you're rating a
Marketplace seller as distinct from something from Amazon direct.
On the kind of page you mention, I really wish the links themselves were
labelled - that confused me initially.

Amazon customer feedback star ratings

2015-09-09 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Further to my message below, someone wrote to me off list, reporting
that he sees the star ratings as check boxes but, on
amazon.co.uk/feedback I see radio buttons in Firefox and IE, but no
check boxes.
Why might that be?

Reg

In case there's a difference, I use amazon.co.uk
If you submit customer feedback on a purchase, a star rating is required.
>From the link Amazon sends me to enter such feedback, I see only "please
enter a rating", but no drop down or series of buttons for the number of
stars.
Does anybody have a solution for this?

Keyboard verbosity in Winamp

2015-09-01 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi all
In the latest Winamp, with W-E9.2 and Windows7-64, once upon a time, I
had keyboard voice on with characters in the "jump to time" dialogue,
and in the "file info" dialogue, but not in the main and playlist
windows.
Now, in roder to hear what I'm typing in those dialogues, I have to have
"voice on with characters" on in the windows, which means that I hear "X"
and "V" when playing or stopping.
How do I get back to how it was please. I currently have winamp.set
associated. Is this still necessary with Jeff's scripts?

Thanks for any help
