[OSM-talk] Tagging Scheme Recommendations: highway=path, footway, trail?
It's not detailled enough. A path is too narrow for a 4 wheels vehicle like a car but not for a 2 wheels vehicle like a moped or a motorbike (or no While that is often true, the criteria goes the other way: - if the way is too narrow to fit a car (hey, my summer car is only 1.48 m wide) or a tractor, it can't be a highway=track, but is a footway, bridleway, cycleway or a path - not all paths are too narrow for four wheel vehicles; many of the things some country guidelines recommend to tag as highway=path + bicycle=designated etc. are 3 to 5 meters wide. Given a random ... linear thing you cross in the forest, without any knowledge of the restrictions possibly posted at the ends, you can be sure it's anything from path to bridleway if it's not wide enough; but not the other way. It seems that culvert=yes is ambiguous. It can be a ford or applied on the road. 2010/8/26 Pieren pier...@gmail.com: Question 2 : if not, is it normal that OSM average contributor has to use these technical words just to make the civil engineers happy ? Don't we take the risk to exclude more and more average contributors by adopting such technical vocabular ? There is a good reason that specialists use specialist language: it is precise. If you could express the same diversity with common language terms there would be no need for special terms. Therefore I welcome the use of precise terms. You will generally have to look things up somewhere (given that this is not done by your editor, in which case it doesn't matter what the tag is), so imho there is no difference. For the specific case of the culvert it might still be imprecise ;-), as it doesn't differentiate between an inverted siphon [1] and a sewer pipe [2]. Another reason that you might want to tag a path in such a manner would be if it had stepping-stones across a stream, rather than a bridge. Then mark the reasons it's not suitable. We have this same discussion with cycling (in fact, Peter Miller had an entire presentation on this issue at SOTM09 - he just suggested the wrong solution :-) ). One persons unsuitable for motorcycles is another person's fun and games. So if the problem is that there are steps, then mark the steps. If the problem is that there's a massive chasm with a log over it, then mark bridge=yes width=0.25m surface=log maxweight=150kg (or similar!). Mark the stepping stones as stepping stones. In short, mark the facts that lead you to think it's not suitable, and leave the judgement to the producers of the map as to what they think is appropriate for their particular audience. Re: [OSM-talk] What's wrong with this multipolygon?
Nathan, I have run into similar issues with complicated multipolygons rendering just find in Mapnik but not fine in Osmarender. Another mapper (who's area I had temporarily broken) told me that the member ways of my relations were in the wrong order. At the time I primarily used Potlatch which does not show an order for relation members. As far as I knew there was no order, or at least it didn't matter. As you know, Mapnik will render multipolygons correctly as long as all the ways form complete rings and are tagged with outer and inner as needed, but it turns out that Osmarender also needs the ways making up each ring to be in consecutive order. JOSM shows the order of the ways and it also shows when they are ordered consecutively in a ring. On the multipolygon page of the wikihttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Multipolygon#Usageit states that the order of the ways does not matter, but clearly to Osmarender it does. Either this is a bug in Osmarender or the wiki is wrong. If you look at my area of the map: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=44.493lon=-73.24zoom=11layers=M you'll see that the large lake (Lake Champlain) renders just fine in Mapnik, but switch to Osmarender and it looks like hell. This is most likely because the outer ways making up the multipolygon are in the wrong order. One of these days maybe I'll fix it, but I'd prefer it if Osmarender just behaved in the same way as Mapnik.
* Reines PHP für den Rest * I actually think C, for the core API, would be the best choice. Mainly because it is the most portable. * OSM braucht 6+ Server nur für dieses eine Projekt also machen sie was falsch * if we want the project to not accept individual user contributions (say adding in steps) .. and only permit the import of the government data. ... then the datbase needs to be usable by those who actually work with the government data directly. gis pros . i mean, leave the user-contributed adding in stairs, to the openstreetmap project. and focus on providing openstreetmap (and naby other systems) the simple datawarehouse that can be used as an underlay, and focus on proviging the various map renderings of the data, so that more users can use i as an overlay..
