It's difficult to summarise FM's services in just two lines :)

I've used them for two years now, gradually consolidating my mail to
my account and dropping other ISP and free accounts in the process.
They've been pretty reliable as other posters here who use their
service can testify. They've had the odd outage of a few minutes
occasionally but their backup arrangements seem robust and I've never
lost a single mail.

Helpful forum, too.

Hello Mike,

A commercial grade application should not be giving AVs at all.

I'm sure anyone developing a commercial application tries to do that.

I think at this point, something like TalkBack in Firefox, or
EurekaLog would be valid options for all betas. It would certainly
streamline the process of narrowing down these bugs.

I'm not familiar with any of them, but I googled a bit and found this:

Using 11 IMAP server it used to take me over 30 minutes at first boot to
get to read my first message. Each message would take in excess of 45
seconds to 2 minutes to display and 90% of the time I used to spend looking
at Connecting to server, please wait popups. Maybe it was these delays
that were causing TB! delete problems?

I thought it was odd having to wait so long, especially with a 2Mb Broad
Band connection and was often very close to giving up IMAP in favour of
POP. Since changing to FM it's every bit as fast as POP or reading mail
from local folders. Whole message lists appear in fractions of a second and
full bodies display twice as quick as that, I'm well impressed... And it
fully supports user defined labels.

All that speed and function for the same cost per year as one 50g packet of
tobacco or 3 and a half pints of beer for MAU's benefit :)

I've not yet tried it with TB to see what effect it'll have on expungement,
neither have I delved into sieving or server side filters yet. Does TB
support sieving?

My sincerest thanks to Manuel Breitfeld for talking me into trying it :)

Re[2]: Deficiencies in v3.5

2005-06-04 Thread Alto Speckhardt
Hi there,

2.) Browse Folder window, any version: If some kind of view threads
by is selected, the threads are displayed with the root message and
a little + to the left to expand the thread. However, a double click
on this line doesn't expand the thread as is expected, but opens this
 message in a new window.
M I don't think this is a bug. As far as I can recall that has always
M been that way, I have just verified it with the oldest version I
M have (3.0.2.10) and it is the same.

That's why I wrote any version. ;-)

It's also why I spoke of deficiencies instead of bugs. A bug
doesn't always come in the form of an AV, it may simply be an
oversight without catastrophic consequences which needs a workaround
to handle.

Yes, I understand that and why this behaviour in fact may be
beneficial to some, not everyone uses the message preview window. But
most will, and the misleading double click response is definitly
non-standard behaviour - in Windows, when you see a collapsed tree
(with the + on the left hand side) you expect it to open on a double
click like it does in explorer or even other TheBat windows (e.g.
Accounts/Folder List).

Look at it this way: Of 100 people doing a double click on the first
subject line, how many will expect to have the message pop up in a new
window instead of the thread unfolding? How many of them will
accidently have executed an action that they didn't intend to execute?
I bet you that it well be well over half, probably at least close to
three fourth.

A program that seeks ease of use adheres to UI standards. If it wants
to reinvent the wheel way better than it had been before, this should
be optional. Forcing the user to change their trained behaviour
instead of catering to his expectations will not endear the program to
the user.

3.) Editor (MicroEd), any version: The editor is unable to honour CRs
without an empty line following. Two lines that follow right after
oneanother are drawn together by auto-format even if the first one is
 terminated by a CR.
M This is a feature WAD, not a bug. A feature that is clear that you
M don't like, but a feature.

I respectfully disagree. A feature is being able to do something, not
being prevented to do something. If the way it currently works is
intended behaviour, it definitly is non-standard and should be
selectable.

a.) The icons are unnecessarily large.
M You can change that with batskin.xml file and I guess it will be
M possible (soon?) via the Customise window.

Great.

Come to think of it, there shouldn't be a reason not to include the
options we discussed above there too, should it? The programmers had
such a hard time creating this monster of Customizer, now that it
exists it could very well be put to some good use.

b.) The icons are also less clear as the ones in v3.01.
M You can use alternative ones defining them in batskin.xml file.

Can the icons from v3.01 be extracted somehow?

I tried it and it doesn't work badly at all. The speed is good, but
there are still those inexplicable pauses in operations. I select a
message and it just takes a long time to appear. With the fast mail
server where bandwidth isn't as great as when working with the server

to wonder if the message will ever display and I find myself going to

There are still hiccups with deleting messages. I have to do a manual

b.) The icons are also less clear as the ones in v3.01.
M You can use alternative ones defining them in batskin.xml file.

Can the icons from v3.01 be extracted somehow?

I don't think they can be extracted, at least I don't know how. But I
am quite sure they exist (or very similar ones) in the form of a
glyphs.bmp file in some of the many TB web sites. However, I do know
they are not directly usable, they have to be converted from BMP to PNG
with alpha transparency and maybe they (the whole set) have to be
resized.

Maybe as a test you want to try my yellowish_icons. As I wasn't myself
satisfied with the different shades of blue which I couldn't clearly
identify, so I slightly modified the new default icons so that at least
folders and unread flag were yellowish. A few other changes affect the
Outbox and disabled filters in Sorting Office. If you want to try them,
you can download from: http://www.rancho-k.com/yellowish_icons.zip

If you don't like them, all you have to do is delete the batskin.xml file
and the PNG files if you wish.

The most un-obvious things: View-Display View Modes

2005-06-04 Thread Munango-Keewati
The Customize function is severely lacking. I believe during the beta
period some people protested the lack of most shortcut keys for
View-Display functions, which seem now to only be available via mouse.

However, there's another shortcoming: If a view mode has a filter to
only show unread messages, View-Display-All will not override it.
Apparently the only way to see all messages in a folder with such a
view mode filter is to change the view mode. Then, of course, when
you've finished whatever you needed to do, you have to change it back.
A lot of wasted effort.

It seems to me that the best approach would be to let View-Display
_temporarily_ override the View Mode filter setting (and folder
tab display settings, should those be implemented in a future version),
and perhaps be cancelable with the Esc key the way alt-click sorting
on From/Subject/Etc. entries currently is.

Anyway, the interaction of View Display, View Mode filters, and folder
tabs needs to be rethought.

The most un-obvious things: Insert Quick Template

2005-06-04 Thread Munango-Keewati
Apparently we're also missing in Customize (see earlier message about
View-Display and View Modes) the Utilities-Insert-Insert Quick
Template dropdown list function, so that it can't be assigned a
shortcut or put on a toolbar button. (Insert Quick Template is
available, but useless: It pops up a message informing you that the
handle isn't found.)

The question is (and someone may have recently addressed this), why is
such a potentially useful function as a QT picklist buried so far down
in the main menu? Further, why couldn't the Ctrl + Shft + Q
(create/edit/delete quick template) function also include an Insert
button? This picklist menu, which features a scroll bar, is far
superior to the one available under Utilities, and making
one list do the work of two (at least in this instance) is a more
eloquent solution.

The ability to quickly insert bits and pieces of oft-used text is a very
powerful tool. Please make it easier to get to.

Hello, Thomas!

However, due to the comma in the name and the missing quote marks
(see RFC2822), the part before the comma was interpreted as an
address and that was invalid. So the message didn't get sent.

So, the problem is not the umlauts but the comma.

And the special characters (umlauts) cause the problem with the comma
and the missing double quotes. If you reply to an address in the
format lastname, firstname [EMAIL PROTECTED] *without* special
