Power Outage Destroyed Operation of Common Filters

2008-07-01 Thread Bill McCarthy
I posted this to the User Discussion List, but this could be
a beta issue - I'm running 4.0.24.24:

Hello TB User Discussion List,

Sunday, I added several new sorting office incoming filters to my
usual account. I failed to shut down TB after doing this and just
left my computer in Stand By mode over night.

We had a power outage Monday while my computer was on (it lasted
longer than the battery). When I restarted, every seemed fine until I
tried a Read messages filter from the Common Filters account.
Ctrl-Shift-X, which normally deletes a message both locally and on the
server, didn't work.

When I checked my sorting office, I noticed that the new (added
Sunday) incoming filters filters were missing! I then checked the
Common Filters - there were my new filters from my account. I moved
them, one at a time, from the Common Filters to my account. I had to
close and open TB each time or I received an unrecoverable error
message and had to shut down TB with Task Manager.

Now my Common Filters have this odd structure. I've rebooted WinXP to
no avail.

Incoming mail
Outgoing mail
Moving In Hooks
Selective Download
Read messages
Replied messages
Outgoing mail
Read messages
Replied messages
Selective Download

Note that all the high level filters (except Incoming mail) are
repeated in Incoming mail along with Moving In Hooks and there are
not in there normal sorted order.

I can add, say, a Read messages filter to Common Filters - but it
doesn't work.

How can I fix my Common Filters so they work again?

Thanks for listening.

Thanks for the latest update!

I'm still having a problem reading my own Sorting Office
filters (or trying to modify them). This happens when I have
a long section of full or partial addresses.

I've attached a sample filter which demonstrates the
problem. A nearly identical real filter once could be
viewed just fine until some change during the past few
months.

My filter does work - I just have to very carefully edit
them with my text editor.

Thanks for considering this for a possible fix. If it
cannot be fixed in the near future, can someone tell us more
about the size limits?

That's odd. Over here it's still located in c:\program files\the bat!
Are you sure that you didn't change anything during install or during
the install of the previous version?

Thanks for the responses from MAU, Hendrik and you.

I think it was with 16.2 that that bak\ directory first
showed up. I had previously installed 16.1 and although
16.2 installed OK, I had 2 entries in Add/Remove programs.

I deleted the first one and TB! still came up - but it was
neither 16.1 or 16.2 - it was an older version and was
located in bak\. I deleted the entire bak\ directory and
reinstalled 16.2 - apparently not paying attention that it
was installed in a new bak\ it created.

This time I uninstalled 4.0.18 and my desktop icon. When I
re-installed I noticed that it was going to go in bak\ so I
changed that to the normal place.

It installed fine but didn't create a desktop icon so I did
a create shortcut and dragged it to my desktop - it has
no normal target - instead it has an almost invisible
text name target with 4.0.18 at then end.

I'm now curious to see if the next version updates this
icon.

Plain Text

2008-02-13 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB Beta List,

I usually read with Micro-Ed in rich text. I have a shortcut
to switch between this and plain text.

With these recent version of TB, plain text eliminates
smileys, as before, but keeps proportional font. The
correct behavior is to switch to non-proportion font when
switching to plain text.

Something appears to be broken.

It's quite easy to add it to the Message List Pop-Up Menu.

Having it come up all the time is a distraction cleaning out

If one uses the manager regularly, a keyboard shortcut can

And how, if I may ask, does this quite easy work?

Six steps doesn't look very easy but it is much more difficult
to explain it than to do it.

(1) Right click to the right of the Main Menu and select
Customize.

(2) You'll see the Customize dialog with 3 panes: Containers,
Actions and Layout. Under Containers, click on Message List
Pop-up Menu.

(3) You'll notice the Layout page now displays the items you see
when you right click a message in the menu list. Now in the
Actions pane, open up All Actions and then open Message View
and click on Show URL Manager (3rd from the bottom).

(4) You'll see a green right arrow turn on between the Actions
and Layout panes - click on it.

(5) Go to the Layout pane and notice that Show URL Manager has
been added to the bottom. Click on it and use the up arrow
to move it somewhere you like - I picked, for example,
between Color Group and Print.

(6) Click OK - you're done. Now right click on an email in the
message list and see the Show URL Manager where you placed
it.

Yes and has been that way for years. I still think this is
poor design and have since it bit me several years ago.

Filter selections that are actual header field names should
filter on that header field name. To help the user wanting
to select on multiple header fields, a choice such as
Sender fields could replace Sender. Sender should
mean Header field - Sender.

A similar problem exists for From.

I tested after installing 3.96.10 (12), by receiving a few

Deterioration over time of Export Text

2007-02-17 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB User Discussion List and TB Beta List,

I started keeping a log of all message filtering back on
July 29, 2003. I did this by adding an Export the message
action.

I use default settings (Plain text and Append to existing
file). For the Template I have (for this group):

%Date=yymmddhhnnss tbudl

This produces a line for each message containing a time
stamp followed by a short name for the last filter the mail
went through.

So from 2003 through most of August 5, 2006, it had one
entry per line for each message filtered.

But late in the day of 8/5/06, it began double spacing all
of the lines! I changed nothing, except probably the
version of The Bat!.

Then on February 5, 2007, all hell broke lose! Looking at
the last double spaced entry and the first wacky format:

070205160609 spam^M
^M
[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL
PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@ [EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL
PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is how my editor (Gvim) displays it. It uses unix
format for this mess (lines end with a LF) and ^M is how it
shows the CR. The ^@ is a hex 00. This looks like some
style of Unicode.

If the above is confusing, here's how those two lines look
in a hex dump:

0033 8d50 0d 0a 30 37 30 32 30 35 31 36 30 36 30 39 20 73 ..070205160609 s
0033 8d60 70 61 6d 0d 0a 0d 0a 30 00 37 00 30 00 32 00 30 pam0.7.0.2.0
0033 8d70 00 35 00 31 00 36 00 31 00 31 00 35 00 31 00 20 .5.1.6.1.1.5.1.
0033 8d80 00 73 00 70 00 61 00 6d 00 0d 00 0a 00 0d 0a 30 .s.p.a.m...0

I can easily convert my 200,000 line file back to normal.
But how can I get The Bat! to write Plain Text files again?

I have copied the beta group because I believe the February
change to wacky text was in a beta release.

The last time I remember this happening, a reminder came up
on the day BEFORE the birthday - not on the birthday.

I tried a little test. Here it is 9/10. I set up two new
entries in my address book - just first name, email address

a11.b.com born 9/11/90.

I shut down TB and restarted. No birthday reminder(s)!

BTW, if it only fires up (when its working) when we start

Bayesit! Confusion

2006-07-13 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB Users and Beta Lists,

I had been using Bayesit! for a few years with fairly good
success on my laptop. About two months ago, my laptop
developed a hardware problem and I switched to my wife's
desktop (XP Pro SP2).

I have been training Bayesit! from scratch and have had it
catch nothing :-(

Turning on logging, I discovered that Bayesit! appeared a
bit confused. From my log file:

C:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesitbase\spamdict.bye
C:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesitbase\nspamdict.bye
Spam frequency dictionary:
Error loading file. May be it is corrupted or lost.
Non-spam frequency dictionary:
Error loading file. May be it is corrupted or lost.
Dictionary didn't load. Continue in training mode...
No current recalculation session. Silent exiting...

There is, of course, no such bayesitbase subdirectory.
Looking at the Bayesit! configuration (under Basic filter's
options), I noticed that I had browsed to
c:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesit for the working directory.
When I manually added the trailing backslash, the log file
showed me that it could now find both spamdict.bye and
nspamdict.bye.

That was just a few days ago and Bayesit! has still not
found any spam (I guess training is just starting now).

However, looking at the Information page is see:

Spam frequency dictionary:
C:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesit\\base\spamdict.bye
Size: 1386 letters.
Capacity: 81940 words.
Non-spam frequency dictionary:
C:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesit\\base\nspamdict.bye
Size: 13135 letters.
Capacity: 649383 words.
Current active dictionary:
Currently active dictionary contains 155617 words.
Status: OK

Please notice the '\\' in those filenames.

Anyone else seeing these problems?

I am currently running the most recent announced beta,
although I do not believe this is a beta issue - so I am
including both mailing lists.

One of their subject lines is:

matching ^\s*$ ?

(1) Press Ctrl-E and fill out the address
(2) Instead of send, queue to Output
(3) Edit Output message by typing, on a blank line:

(4) Send the message

Of course you need a Quick Template named 'crf' with

%SetHeader(X-Sender,)%-

(I wrote this a long time ago when, I think, TB! was

This approach is very simple and works with any type of

However it would be even simply - fully automatic - if

36: Failure of Ctrl-Right (reading unread messages)

Hello TB Beta List,

I use Ctrl-Right to read mail. It skips to the next
unread message in the current folder (or the next
folder when all messages are marked read in the current
folder).

It is no longer going to the first unread message.
Here is an example. Suppose a folder (in threaded
view) has this structure (all other mails are read):

A - read
   B - unread
   C - unread

If I position on message A and then go to the account
name in the folder tree, pressing ctrl-right brings me
to message C instead of message B.

Thanks for checking, Roelof.

I understand and can see the same behavior with all
messages visible. When I started this thread, I didn't
realize that the behavior is different with my view
mode - which only shows unread mail.

let's first make sure we are in (no view mode).

In your TB! Beta folder, with all messages read, press
Alt+1 then Ctrl+= to be in standard threaded mode with
all messages visible - we should have a common starting
point.

Now find the same structure and mark them unread so you
have, anywhere in a thread:

A - unread
   B - unread
   C - unread

Now do View-Display-Only Unread messages. Only those
three messages will be visible.

Position on message A, mark it read (Ctrl+M) and then
go to the account name in the folder tree.

Finally, when you press Ctrl+Right, you will be
positioned on message C instead of message B.

Can you confirm that?

Yes, I am sure but you must be in Only Unread message

Other than that... I don't see CTRL+right being the standard shortcut for

That is surprising. If I look at Customize, I see
three standard ways of doing this:

Ctrl+Alt+Right
Ctrl+Right
Ctrl+]

You must have deleted the other two - or may the fact

I used to use Ctrl+], but since using a laptop I've

BM TB! violates this. For example, it adds identifying

BM an external tool.

What do you consider identifying about Date, Message-ID or
 MIME-version?

Nothing, but adding a Resent-from line causes filter
problems. An example may be helpful.

I often receive mail intended for my wife. I can
simply redirect those mails to her. My forwarding
address appears in the Return-Path: and my actual
address appears in Received: - these are fine, I am
fully identified (the address in this mail is a
forwarding address - it forwards to my real ISP
address).

However it also adds me in a Resent-From: field. That
is the field that causes improper filtering at her end.

A Pre-send filter would allow me to dump those header
records without needing to external SMTP filtering to
dump them.

Thanks for the latest beta. Here are a few
observations:

(1) Under the Main menu, Specials has Watch Replies In
as blank again.

(2) Refreshing a virtual Watched folder causes the Sent
Mail folder to be checked. This may be WAD but it
is annoying.

(3) Invoking, by System Hot Keys, Check Mail for All
Accounts results in the CC coming up in the
background.

(4) Invoking, by System Hot Keys, Check Mail for
Current Accounts results in the CC coming up in the
background AND checking All Accounts (instead of
just the Current).

They look vary useful and appear small enough to fit

Are there any instructions in English?

I have no German, and I didn't have any trouble with them. Don't
remember what instructions I had but there were some.

The minimal splash screen is more of a keeper than the minimal icons.
I decided I liked the set of yellow folders better for icons.

Thanks. I downloaded the zip. Following instructions
in German are instructions in English.

However the smaller icons take up as much space as
TB!'s oversized ones :-( I'm back TB!'s.
