Personally, I've never seen it go away automatically once it appears.
I've always had to hide it manually. The only difference is that in
previous versions, if you disconnected while the dial-up monitor was
displayed but disconnected using windows dial-up rather than TB!'s
dial-up monitor abort button, then the only way to get rid of the
dial-up monitor would be to shut down TB!. That problem has since

Re: Replies arrive before originals (was:Re: Strange error message when sending)

2000-08-14 Thread Syafril Hermansyah

Hello Marck D. Pearlstone,

Responding to your article on Sunday, August 13, 2000 at 12:21:19 GMT
+0100 (which was 13/08/2000 18:21 GMT +0700 my Local Time) :

[ ... ]

MDP I agree that this is not always the case. The "retry queue" has had a
MDP mention in this thread and I can state what this is here and now. If
MDP all MX servers (see above) fail to respond after a fixed retry count
MDP (x times for each server in the MX list for the domain - I have my
MDP server set at three, I think the default is four) the message fails
MDP the immediate delivery and is placed in the retry queue.

The server will retry sending in first 4 hours, and every attempt will
try 8 times per MX. It depend on the traffic though, sometimes in 4
hours the server will retry 10 times , sometimes more and sometime less
than 4 (the server will check delivery schedule every 1 minutes).

MDP This queue is processed at regular intervals - usually four hourly
MDP ... I don't know what Syafril has defaulted ours to - for around 4
MDP days.

It's depend on error messages when trying to deliver, but normally if
after 4 hours the message can't be deliver it will going to RetryQueue
in this list (will stack there for 3-days, trying delivery for next
days) or going to Relay Host for further delivery attempt.

MDP After four days, the server will inform the list manager (in the
MDP case of list traffic) of the permanent delivery failure. This is
MDP the retry queue logic. It doesn't apply to the example you have
MDP given - there is no appreciable delay between the dutaint server
MDP receiving the original message and the relay servers on the other
MDP side accepting the message for forward delivery.

Correct, thank for the explanation.

Fwd: Re: TheBat and Spam

2000-08-14 Thread Steve Lamb

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Once again the question of effective filtering of spam has come up and
once again people have made suggestions which simply do not work. A "bozo
bin" doesn't work because spammers most likely move to a different address
before you even check your mail and read the message. All they do is provide
an extra filter that needs to be run and virtually nil chance of catching
anyone.

Filters on subjects or on pseudo-techincal means also fail because they
generate false positives, are ineffective (maake monie know!), and can block
legit users for dubious return.

So, without futher buildup, here's the system that I put to this list back
in January. Let me know that in that time I had instituted that filter on my
home account and was catching 2-3 spam a day and cannot recall a single
positive hit /aside/ from when I started a new list and hadn't gotten a
message in from it yet to set up the filtering.

In another message in a related thread I noted that I had once figured out
hit hit/miss/false positive hit ratio on my mail. Something like 99.95% hit,
.001% false positive with the remainder, .049%, being spam getting through to
my inbox. That was over several years of using that system on PMMail on an
account that was spammed heavily and on which I got in excess of 500 messages
per day.

Frankly, this should be a FAQ.

little while. Today, this quote caught my eye. Can you tell me about
your spam system? Where can I find the specifics for it? Will it in
fact do what tracer asks (i.e. dump mail which has sender=receiver)?

No, it doesn't do that. However, it doesn't have to. Allie recently sent
a message out that described it so you might have it. If not, here's the
short version.

The two basic premises are this:

1: Nearly every spammer BCCs.
2: People get mail from two sources, directly addressed to them from
individuals they know or mass mailed (BCC) mailing lists they signed up for.

Instead of trying to filter spam, we're going to define a set of rules to
filter everything but spam.

So, we set up a series of filters. The first batch filters out all the
mailing lists that the individual is on. Most people do this anyway. Once
they filter it, it stops.

The second series of filters catches mail from individuals who /may/ BCC
the person. Friends, family, loved ones, work colleagues, etc.

The next to last filter stops filtering on anything which is directly
addressed to the individual.

The last filter moves everything that wasn't caught by the above filters
into a spam folder for the person to double check for something that might
have been missed and final deletion.

Another way to put it is like this... If it isn't a mailing list, from
friends/relatives or directly addressed to you, chances are high that it is
spam.

In tracer's case, if sender = recipient chances are it isn't on a mailing
list he is on, it isn't from someone he expects to BCC him, and, clearly, it
isn't from him. It will be filtered.

Strange things when replying

2000-08-14 Thread Jan-Arild Løkstad

Hello All,

Pressing the "Reply"-button opens up the "Message Editor Window" with
the quote prefix preceding each lineas if you didn't know :) The
strange thing is that only the last 4-5 lines of the message to which
I am replying is visible in the editor. The rest of the original
message, and also the scrollbar!, has disappeared, and the only way to
get both back into view again is to press the "Page Up"-key on the
keyboard.

This happens _every time_ I reply to a message. Anyone who have
experienced anything similar?

I think that this 'fake' dial-up box is the minimised first box that you
like to look at while connecting. This I have to manually close as well,
mainly because it takes up precious taskbar real estate.

took a closer look, and there is an option that says "continue
processing with other rules" that has to be checked, and it
 wasn't

In fact, it didn't solve my problem. What I had until now, where 2
filtering strings one below the other. One would filter messages with
starc as recipient, the other messages with TBUDL as recipient. It
doesn't seem to work. So I took the one filtering string away and put
it in a separate new rule, I hope it works now.
Another question now. Since my rules didn't work I would like to
apply my new, hopefully working filter rule to the messages that
are already in the incoming mail folder. Is there a way of doing
   this?

   Thanks...starc

Hi starc,

In fact, it didn't solve my problem. What I had until now, where 2
filtering strings one below the other. One would filter messages
with starc as recipient, the other messages with TBUDL as
recipient. It doesn't seem to work.

No wonder, two filter strings in one set means the messages has to
satisfy both conditions to be considered a match. Next time you have
questions about filters, you better post exactly (in detail) how you
set it up, so other people could understand you better. Simply
stating that you have a rule that doesn't work isn't very
informative.

Another question now. Since my rules didn't work I would like to
apply my new, hopefully working filter rule to the messages that
are already in the incoming mail folder. Is there a way of doing
 this?

From menu [Folder | Re-filter] or right click a folder - re-filter.

pretty much covered by the FAQ. You do know there's a FAQ, don't

How to make the bat work like newsreader?

2000-08-14 Thread starc

Hello TBUDL,

well, after I suggested that we make a newsgroup, some answered that
the bat already offers all functionality a newsreader would give us.
So I'm asking now: how must I configure the bat to be able to read
this discussion list like a newsgroup? To be more specific, how can I
do the following:

1. I want to be able to browse the messages while they are still on my
pop server. I want to read the subject and then be able to download
only the messages which I'm interested in. One user told me that this
is possible, so how do I do it?

2. I want messages that are not from TBUDL to be downloaded directly
to their specific folders, so only the messages from TBUDL are kept on
the server for browsing.

3. I want to be able to make some sorting of the messages accordint to
the thread. Is the only way I can do this to sort them by subject?

I have cp'ed this from the Help for you:

--- quote ---

QUOTESTYLE=”expression” - specify the quotation sign prefix used after this macro.
Expression can be any of the following:

NONE- use an empty prefix (a standard)
I - use initials of the sender of the original message
IF - use the first initial of the sender of the original message
N - use the full name of the sender of the original message
F - use the first name of the sender of the original message
L - use the last name of the sender of the original message
=text - use the “text” as the prefix, e.g. %QUOTESTYLE=”=-|”

--- unquote ---

You can access the help file by clicking on the word "help" in the
main menu. ;-)

However, I do agree that "the complete list of template macros" could
be in alphabetical order. Also, an entry "macros" in the Index
couldn't hurt.

No, you can choose between references, subject, author and date.
References is the most convenient way to read your mail, especially if

Address Book Problems Mail Ticker

2000-08-14 Thread Arno van Stralen

Hi all,

After a nice, clean format and some efforts to get Windows 2000
installed on my system - which seems as impossible as jumping off
Mount Everest and only having a broken toe - , I re-installed TB!
Everything works perfectly fine, luckily, except for the address book.
F8 gets me into it, but adding someone's data will not succeed. My
system hangs for a few seconds, and when running normally again the
new entry does not appear in the AB. Even creating a new group won't
work out; it causes some memory error. Is this a known problem or some
failure in my RAM?

Secondly, I'd like to offer a feature request. The Mail Ticker can be
pulled at the upper or bottom "line" of your screen, which causes it
to expand to the widthness of your monitor. This will cover other
applications though; Opera for example is unworkable.
Would it be possible and wanted to treat the Mail Ticker as a toolbar
when it's on the edge of your screen, as for example ICQ does?

The width of the mail ticket is variable. Mine is about 10 cms long.
It also floats some 3 cms under the top of the screen to allow for
some info in some apps that are at the top, and is off the right edge
by the width of the Office toolbar.

Basically, you can put it anywhere on the screen you want, at any
width. The height has two options only, but you cannot put all on the
edge like a toolbar.

You can create all those operators using what's there. With the 'AND"

it whether to filter if the string is present or if it's not present
through the 'presence' option. It seemed pretty clear to me once I

which is far from clear and is undocumented, mainly the flexibility one

rehashes of issues as these, small ones though hopefully, for the sake
of the new comers who have an interest in this issue.

Tracer does make a point that this topic has been extensively discussed
on more than one occasion previously. Looking this up in the

I personally tend to agree here. Ritlabs is small. If they lose focus it
could be a bad move on their part. Supporting news reading may prove to
be distracting because once it's supported the userbase will start
requesting news-reader features/enhancements. This may very well slow down
the development/enhancement of TB! as a premiere specialist e-mail
client.

t Also its likely more a beta subject...

I tend to disagree here. TBUDL subscribers should be free to discuss

are discouraged.

AvS Secondly, I'd like to offer a feature request. The Mail Ticker can be
AvS pulled at the upper or bottom "line" of your screen, which causes it
AvS to expand to the widthness of your monitor. This will cover other
AvS applications though; Opera for example is unworkable.
AvS Would it be possible and wanted to treat the Mail Ticker as a toolbar
AvS when it's on the edge of your screen, as for example ICQ does?

Thomas The width of the mail ticket is variable. Mine is about 10 cms long.
Thomas It also floats some 3 cms under the top of the screen to allow for
Thomas some info in some apps that are at the top, and is off the right edge
Thomas by the width of the Office toolbar.

Thomas Basically, you can put it anywhere on the screen you want, at any
Thomas width. The height has two options only, but you cannot put all on the
Thomas edge like a toolbar.

This all being true, I still think that adding some kind of "toolbar
option" improves the functionality of the ticker. I personally tend to
turn it off when using multiple applications within short time
intervals. It's impossible for me to position the ticker in such a way, that
it will never cover up some important / handy / informative function
of a program.
Bearing in mind that a screen resolution of 1024*768 or higher is
getting standardized, such a toolbar won't do serious harm to your
working space.

Or am I just whining about details? ;-)

Just for the record: I used Eudora, OE and Agent for e-mail before

e-mail,too, if it were as good for it as TB!). And I use TB! for mail.
Both programmes do what they do very good - apart from some glitches,
which are not that important or get being "fixed" over time. I think
we don't need everything done with one programme, or we'd use IE!

BTW, my browser is Opera and what I don't like about the latest
version is it's integrating of features which are not - repeat *not* -
really integral to a browser, i.e. news and mail facilities. Even it's
download manager seems to me superfluous as there are at least two
very good managers on the market (Go!zilla and GetRight).

I like small programmes that can do what they are originally intended

Re: Strange things when replying

2000-08-14 Thread Ming-Li

Hi Thomas,

JD TO find what version it's running press [win] + [break]

 Done.

JD Choose device manager.

Here I got stuck. How do you spell that in Chinese? - Just kidding.
 Can you describe the icon?

LOL. It's called "¸Ë¸mºÞ²zû", if you can find the "pattern". I'm
not sure about the icon since I'm in Win2k, but it should be the
second pane for Win95/98.

And by the way, I have managed to download IE 5.5 in English. Unlike
Netscpae, it displays web pages in English, German, Thai, Chinese...

Yup.

I was hoping that I find language support for English Win98 somewhere
on the microsoft site; no such luck.

Did you try the MS Download Center at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/?

Now at the left hand side, chose "Find download in English". At the
right hand side, Choose "Internet Explorer 5 (not 5.01!)" for
product name and "Windows 98" for operating system, then find an
item called "Internet Explorer Microsoft Global IME 5.01". Along
with it, you may download the proper language support. I remember I
could download just the language support (for display) without
downloading the IME (for input), but either I remember it wrong, or
that option is removed.

I cannot imagine that the difference between my Chinese Win98 and
an English Win98 is more than the Chinesee language driver plus a
number of DLL's in which the menu items are, like the .lng files
 in TB. Am I wrong?

Well, it's more complicated than that. English Windows with Chinese
language support is not the same as a Chinese Windows (and not just
the interface language and help files are different). The former may
be enough for you, but it depends on the applications you need to
run.

JD Find your display driver and click on properties. Goto the
JD section titled driver and click on the button marked Driver File
JD Details. All the info you want should be there.

Since the manual is in English, let's hope the info is in English,
 too. ;-)

In device manager? Not necessarily. ;) It's more likely in mixed
language.

Be forewarned that installing display card driver written for
English Windows on Chinese Windows system sometimes cause more
troubles than it would solve. Backup before proceeding is a prudent
thing to do here, or be sure you have the original driver ready.

Re: How to make the bat work like newsreader?

Hello starc,

s well, after I suggested that we make a newsgroup, some answered

It offers similar functionality, but it's *not* a newsreader, wasn't
designed as a newsreader, and you're only going to be able to simulate
one using the different functions of TB. V2 of TB might include
functionality for a newsreader-- I really hope *not*, unless it's a
plugin.

s 1. I want to be able to browse the messages while they are still on
s my pop server. I want to read the subject and then be able to
s download only the messages which I'm interested in. One user told
s me that this is possible, so how do I do it?

Use Account | Dispatch Mail On Server

s 2. I want messages that are not from TBUDL to be downloaded
s directly to their specific folders, so only the messages from TBUDL
s are kept on the server for browsing.

You'll need to set up a Selective Download filter, and set messages
matching TBUDL and/or TBBETA criteria to "Ignore". This will get the
rest of your mail, but then you can use dispatcher to see all the TB*
list messages still on the server.

s 3. I want to be able to make some sorting of the messages accordint
s to the thread. Is the only way I can do this to sort them by
s subject?

See View | Sort-by

Cheers,
Leif Gregory

Please, please, please, whatever influence you have, don't let the
developers go there. The Bat! is a damn good mailer, and I *really*
would like to see the bug backlog addressed (especially the IMAP bug
I've been bitching about for years now). I don't want Opera
newsreaders, Netscape newsreaders, newsreaders in Outlook, and
newsreaders in The Bat! It isn't economy when you have to pay (in one
way or another) five times over for functionality that's already
over-provided.

It's a doddle. Export the OE5 address book as comma delimited. When
you import into TB! make sure that e-mail address is transposed to
 e-mail in TB.

It's the second row from the top. Change column 3 to read "e-mail" and
 set import to yes.

will try it with outlook, hope it works the same, thanks.

It might just be that he needs a new battery.

If it were that, wouldn't shutting off my computer reset the clock
every time? (This doesn't happen.) I don't see any pattern, so I
think it might be some obscure app or Windows feature that is
 occasionally messing up my clock.

It isn't a big deal, sometimes a bit annoying for other people.
