Shift+Delete really deletes

2005-12-07 Thread P.Johnson
Hello,

While trying to set up a system where pressing Shift+Delete would move
emails to an archive folder, I lost several hundred messages.

I selected all the messages in a folder, pressed Shift + Delete and
specified the destination folder. The deletion progress bar finished,
then the progress bar window hung. So I restarted the program. The
files seem to have vanished.

A normal delete would have put these messages in the Trash folder,
which is empty. Where could they have gone and how can I retrieve
them?

Thanks for any help!

Bayesit or Bayes Filter

2005-08-20 Thread P.Johnson
Hello,

I recently reinstalled TB! and wanted to try the spam plugin, Bayesit.
This program is not working well at all; I trained it with over
3,000 spam messages, yet these are still routinely delivered into my
inbox with very few ending up in the junk folder. I am using the
default settings.

I know there have been problems with Bayesit in the past but hoped
these had been solved. I am thinking of switching to Bayes Filter,
which worked well for me until I upgraded to a higher TB! version.
Anyone have experience or suggestions for either of these programs?

If I didn't want to try built-in spam software, I would go back to K9
which worked very well and which I would recommend.

Thank you in advance,

Keyboard shortcut

2005-08-18 Thread P.Johnson
Hello all,

I am trying to set up a keyboard shortcut for Justify Left.

I open the Customize Window, create a new toolbar, add the command
(from Message Editor Form in the left column). Then I right click
None under the Shortcuts box on the right, and press the key I want
(F10). I click Assign and the toolbar is created.

The shortcut doesn't work, after all this. I have checked the option
for this new toolbar in Customize, and not checked it. Neither works.

As a strange byproduct, after doing all this, the right-click menu does
not work when composing a message.

Has anyone successfully set a new keyboard shortcut? This seems rather
a painful procedure; not sure this is an improvement over the previous
method.

Thank you!

To clarify, the suspected compatibility problem with XP SP2 was with

K9 isn't a TB! plugin but operates very smoothly and so far is working

Filter symbol question

2004-12-02 Thread P.Johnson

spam folder and have tried everything I (and you) could think of.

But I noticed a symbol beside the K9 filter in the tree view of the

http://www.tangleworld.com/screenshot2.jpg

...it looks like a little hand to me. Can anyone tell me what it
signifies, and whether it might be the problem with the filter?

BTW, I have moved the K9 filter to the top, bottom, middle and changed
the conditions around and tried various combinations. The messages it
won't filter are all addressed to a specific sub-account, though spam
to other sub-accounts is filtered properly.

Thank you!

PM I'd describe it as a hand too, indeed. I don't see this here on Win2K,
PM but it looks to me like it is just there to indicate the selected
PM filter.

Ack, I knew I should have taken a slightly different screenshot. The
little hand is there even when the filter is not selected. There is a
green checkmark that indicates the filter is selected.

PM What do you mean by sub-accounts? Do they have account status in The
PM Bat!? Then you'd have to check all their sorting offices.

The messages in question are addressed to the sub-account and
forwarded to my main account address. From there I they are (or should
be) filtered to its own folder. I'll go back and check my settings
again though.

PM I have K9 working flawlessly here (except for the occasional false
PM negative), and like you I only filter to a special folder. shrug

I know -- as I said in another message, K9 works and learns very
quickly, so I haven't given up on it just yet. Pretty sure I am doing
something wrong here. :-)

But that little hand is a mystery.

Thanks!

Nothing like a screenshot... www.tangleworld.com/screenshot.jpg . The

I checked with the ISP and there is no problem there. I can only
assume it is the new computer, possibly SP2 (though how that would
affect one account in my email program I don't know) or a different
 conflict.

GS...Have you checked the account transport settings
GS (Ctrl+Shft+P)?

Oh yes, many times. :-) There seems to be nothing wrong there.

Poor old Texans... I suppose I should be a fan but I'm not interested

make that :-( as they beat the Lions).

GS Is the Grey cup soccer? That sport is definitely growing in the
GS US.

No, it's the Canadian football final; Canadian football played like
its US counterpart only on a bigger field, only 3 downs, and some
other rule differences. This Grey Cup was the 92nd annual game. Also,
the final was played in an outdoor stadium, in NOVEMBER. Whoa. lol

Thanks again,

Transferring TB with batch file

2004-11-21 Thread P.Johnson
Hello TBUDLers,

I am trying to do a specific backup and restore using a batch file, so
that I can transfer my current TB over to my new computer. Tony Boom
has very kindly given me instructions to do so, using Winrar as my zip
program. The only problem I can see is that my TB folder is called
TheBat2.0 for some reason (as opposed to The Bat!), even though it
is the latest release. All new releases were installed into that
folder and the name never changed. I cannot change the name of the
folder (believe me, I tried).

My question is, what wording, if any, do I need to change in the
following file:

I hope I have explained this properly. I have absolutely no experience
with batch files or this type of procedure, so please make your
response suitable for a simpleton like me. :-) Any help any of you can
provide would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Yes.

GS C:\Program Files\TheBat2.0\MAIL
GS I'll assume yes.

Right you are. :-)

I cannot change the name of the folder (believe me, I tried).

GS If you were logged out of TB and have WinXP Pro on NTFS file system you
GS are probably logged in as a limited user. Even if you were logged in as
GS Admin user I don't know if you would want to change it because TB may
GS not work afterwards. IIRC TB directory structure saved in other files
GS possibly registry which may throw things out of wack.

You lost me there, sorry. I do know that I couldn't change the name of
the directory; lost all the data files and had to go back (using
GoBack).

My question is, what wording, if any, do I need to change in the
 following file:

GS See below:

 ---

 @Echo off

 Path C:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe

GS Hopefully WinRAR is installed here on your PC so you shouldn't have to
GS make any changes, otherwise you have to make appropriate changes.

I have WinRAR installed in both computers now.

GS ...
GS So I am SWAG'ing it. I would try batch from Program directory
GS C:\Program Files\TheBat2.0\batch.bat which would put registry in
GS program directory to be latter compressed into backup file which would
GS be a good thing. Otherwise you may have to run from root directory
GS C:\batch.bat

Lost in space. Sorry to be so thick. :-(

snip...

 if exist TBbckup1.reg rename TBbckup1.reg TBbckup2.reg

GS I would rem the above line out because you want registry backed up
GS provided you are going to use the exact directory structure on new
GS machine, otherwise I would just use TB backup and do a clean install
GS with it on new machine. So just put rem in front of above 2 lines.

I tried the TB backup and restore and sadly it didn't work for me,
which is why Tony's batch file transfer will be a godsend once I get
it to work. ...By now you probably know I couldn't rem something if my
life depended on it.

 start /w regedit /e TBbckup1.reg
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!

GS this backs up the registry to a file name TBbckup1.reg which is real
GS important for setting up later on new machine, otherwise you will have
GS to do a clean install. When you get the .reg file on the new machine
GS all you have to do is double click to put it in the registry.

All that worked very well; but the .reg file created a directory
called The Bat! and I am trying to install TheBat2.0. Anyway I
didn't get my mail program restored.

GS Remember
GS you may want to do a clean install with backup from TB backup utility
GS anyway. I am no expert here but think the only limitation on TB backup
GS utility is to have the same directory structure below the Mail
GS directory, whereas batch file backup requires both the same structure
GS for the program AND mail files.

I don't know why TB's backup restore didn't work... maybe The Bat!
vs TheBat2.0 again.

GS Also the other thing to note here is how are you going to transfer the
GS backup files to the new PC. Are they hooked up on a network, or is
GS your mail base very small. If small then you may get away with a CD or
GS even a floppy. It all depends upon the size.

I copied the zip files to a CD, then opened it in my new computer.

snip...

 if exist C:\email\TBBackup.rar del C:\email\TBBackup.rar

GS deletes old WinRar file below the C:\email\ directory. If you are
GS going to use this line you will have to make sure directory structure
GS agrees, otherwise change to whatever you want.

I think all is ok here.

 C:\Progra~1\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe a -u -as C:\email\TBBackup.rar C:\Program
 Files\The Bat!

GS This is the actual backup. I would assume the switches in WinRAR will
GS backup all files in the directory and below, and WinRar is located in
GS the same directory. So if your Mail directory is located somewhere
GS else you will have to make changes. I am going to assume your Mail
GS directory is located below the program directory and your backup is
GS going to be in the C:\email\ directory. This being the case
GS then change the line to the following:

GS C:\Progra~1\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe a -u -as
GS C:\email\TBBackup.rar C:\Program Files\TheBat2.0

In the registry the program is called The Bat!. So should I still
change it to TheBat2.0?

Serious download problem update

2004-11-17 Thread P.Johnson
Hello, and thanks to those who tried to help me with my download
problem. To recap, when trying to access email from one account the
Connection Centre would hang and the mail stayed on the server. Then,
the only way to close the CC was to close TB! using Task Manager.

AV and spam programs were turned off to test the system, and made no
difference.

I cleared the mail off the server using OE, which had no problem with
the download at all. I reinstalled and re-setup all the offending
account information, new folders, filters and so on.

After a few beautiful normal message downloads, the Connection Centre
started to hang again, often with messages visible that were not
downloaded. Currently it hangs sometimes, sometimes it doesn't.
History tells me it will only get worse.

I haven't cleaned out (and sold) my old computer yet, and there TB!
also sits, working perfectly. Something obviously happened in the
transfer/restore.

Can anyone at all suggest a way to safely move my old program into my
new computer, or otherwise offer a solution? Last time I used TB's
restore (onto disk) to move the program. Backup4All couldn't seem to
do the job.

Failing that, I am looking at other mail programs, much as I hate that
idea.

Is anyone able to offer help, or a source of help?

Serious mail download problem

2004-11-15 Thread P.Johnson
Hello,

I am having a real problem now with collecting mail; not sure whether
it is a Connection Centre issue or not. The Connection Centre
continues to hang ... it will stay open and unresponsive until I
close TB! using the Task Manager. Other times it appears to have
finished downloading, but does not close then either.

Bottom line is that I am not receiving all incoming mail. For what
it's worth, I uploaded a screenshot.
http://www.tangleworld.com/screenshot.jpg
Not sure how this will be helpful. It looks like the CC is in
progress, but nothing is happening (honest).

I've sent myself test messages (not received) and am aware of
other messages not coming through. It seems to happen with the
one account; I have double checked settings.

And I have turned off my virus protection (NAV, which came with the
system) with no change.

Please tell me how I can resolve this. I hate to have to start up
another email client.

Here's hoping I receive the reply to this one (what is the name of the
online list service?)

Thank you.

IAW I get it happening occasionally but only when it is not the foreground
IAW window. If you make it the foreground window and download new

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to make a difference if the window is in
the background or foreground... just tested it now and the Connection
Centre window is still open, blank now, even though the connection is
finished.

And, if I then manually close the Connection Centre window, then close
TB!, I get the warning window: Some tasks are now active. Do you want
to exit when they are finished? So I guess it is still technically
open.

It is an annoyance, and I'm not used to this in TB! :-)

Hello,

The Connection Centre (the window that monitors incoming/outgoing
mail) has started to hang after a new mail download. After mail is

not close.

Is this a bug; is there a solution or workaround?

I should mention, though I hope it is not related, that I have just

On the Trend site, under System Requirements, email, The Bat! is not
 listed...

MM You simply could try some AV which is not at all specifically
MM tied/dedicated to e-mail traffic; simply an engine which will treat ALL
MM sorts of activities in the same way, controlling *everything* what
MM happens to your machine - *including* mail traffic (without any need for
MM a dedicated plug-in).

That is exactly what I am looking for, but of course want the email
scan included, as you say. Plug in not necessary.

MM One of such ones is AntiVir (Personal Edition,
MM which is free) I use often, and it (the Guard part of it) will react
MM on ANY occurrence which involves a suspicious file/action.

I haven't heard of this one!

MM It is *very
MM light* in spending resources whilst it monitors machine.

That I like very much.

MM And although I
MM have pretty tight selective download filters, here and there AntiVir is
MM catching some infected file, and asks me for action I'd prefer
MM (renaming, deleting, denying/allowing access etc.). It does that very
MM fast, so you can proceed download of other messages of that account, on
MM the fly.

...as long as you don't have to be too techie to run the software
efficiently?

MM There are plenty of good AV programs, so is not very grateful to say
MM which one is best, but basically those which are able to function
MM independently, that is to treat all files/occurrences equally, using
MM no special plug-in (which requires some sort of integration with a
MM particular application, which, further, might be a cause of possible
MM complications), are most reliable.

Yes I think you are right; sometimes the convenience of a plug in
turns out to be a major headache instead, and needless since most
virus programs will scan without the integration.

Thank you very much, Mica!

PC-cillin and TB!

2004-11-04 Thread P.Johnson
Hello,

I'm getting a new computer and want to get the best firewall and virus
protection I can, and have been looking at Trend Micro PC-cillin
Internet Security. I am wondering if any TB! users have tried this
suite; and more generally, if there has to be specific compatibility
between email programs and virus software.

On the Trend site, under System Requirements, email, The Bat! is not
listed. I asked whether PC-cillin would scan my TB! mail, and got this
reply:

We have no answer to this question for now but you may try using your
software but please enable the webmail scan feature. If you experience
any problems, please do not hesitate to write us.
Hope this helps.

Hmmm.

Thank you!

This template works fine if I start a new message from the AB, just
doesn't work when I click on New Message from the main window.

The folder template looks like this:

...though I understand the AB overrides the folder templates anyway.

Can anyone please explain what I am doing wrong?

RO Is that as in all of the filters or some of the filters?
RO Just check the conditions to see whether something might be converted
RO badly. And spend some extra time on the filters you're suspecting from
RO misbehavior.

Sorry I wasn't more clear... as far as I can tell, so far it is only
the TBUDL and Spam filters that are not functioning correctly. And,
strangely, some TBUDL message are filtered into their folder, some are
not. The condition for the TBUDL filter is:
Message Source - match - [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RO This same checking run could be used to adapt your filters to the
RO possibilities that the NFS offers. For instance, I changed my tbudl
RO filter from the condition:
RO text: Reply-To: *.tbudl@ with regexp enabled
RO to this:
RO Header Field - Reply-To - contains - [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is *without* regex enabled? I will try that, thanks.

BTW, I don't see where I enable or disable regex. The Options tab has
what looks like fewer options too-- or does the content depend on
conditions and actions previously selected?

The non-working spam filter is set up like this:
Message source - match - ^X-Spampal: SPAM
I'll try a few alternates and see if I can get it working again.

Roelof, thank you so much for your quick response. I know a lot of it
is just common sense (lacking here) but I was just a little hesitant
about fiddling with the NFS settings when the filters are such an

I'm probably not the only one confused about TB!v3.0 and whether or
not to upgrade, but I think I would like to take it for a test
drive... but forget (one of many senior moments) how to install a
trial version while leaving the original intact.

I've always installed upgrades over my current TB! version with no
problems at all. If I do the same with 3.0 how do I revert back if
necessary?

I would prefer to do all this without installing different versions in
different folders.

Ritlabs seems to have disappointed a lot of users, who feel quite
passionately about it. I'm sorry that Ritlabs has not so far been
responsive, and don't know what I'll do down the road. Without a major
change in the new version maybe it is time to move on from TB!. I
think it was Mica who compared Ritlabs to an annoying relative-- we
all have to make the judgement. ...Though I admit I have some family
members I would happily toss out the window. :-)

Mail deleted from server

2004-01-19 Thread P.Johnson
Forgive me if this is way off topic for this list, but I am having a
strange problem with some emails being deleted from the server before
I can download them. I am only aware of this because I see them in the
SpamPal Bayesian filter reclassify window (just before they disappear
forever). This happens with only a few messages as far as I can tell,
but the reason mystifies me. They are marked spam by SpamPal, but I
route all spam into a spam folder; I don't have them removed from the
server. My ISP is blaming it on spam, virus and/or firewall programs,
but none of these are have been set up to remove mail directly from
the server. Could I have inadvertently specified something like this
within TB?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, before I have to get on the
phone with the wonderful Road Runner tech support. :-)

Filter question

2003-10-31 Thread P.Johnson
Hello,
Is there any reason why TB! would not automatically filter a message
(when Manual only is not ticked in the filter rule) but will do so when
asked to Re-filter Messages (Folderright click)?

I find my incoming filters failing me more and more lately... just not
working in many cases. Could the adding of a new rule upset the system
somehow (for example, by changing the order of the rules)? In the
Sorting Office under the Options tab, should I always have the
Continue processing with other filters box checked?

One of my accounts is used for outgoing messages only, but shares an
incoming account. For some reason all the incoming mail is duplicated
into that account inbox, even though I have rules set up to allow
only specific incoming messages.

When I add a new rule I just enter the information step by step and
double-check it all, but am not having a lot of success. Any advice
would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Re[2]: Filter question

2003-10-31 Thread P.Johnson
Marck,

Is there any reason why TB! would not automatically filter a
message (when Manual only is not ticked in the filter rule) but
will do so when asked to Re-filter Messages (Folderright click)?

M Sometimes rules used to get corrupted. I would often have to
M re-create a rule from scratch to get it to work again. No amount of
M tweaking would put it right.

I didn't realize this happened. Too bad this is the case, but it's
important to know.

In the Sorting Office under the Options tab, should I always have
the Continue processing with other filters box checked?

M Certainly not. It's very much a special case option. Normally a
M rule has moved a message and it's no longer in the Inbox to process
M any further with other filters.

Thanks for clarifying that too.

M Where? In Selective download filters? I don't really understand
M how you have done that.

What I meant to say is that many of my messages come through one of
the accounts (Account A) and are filtered through to folders in other
accounts. Fine. These messages coming through Account A are also
duplicated to another account inbox (Account X). Account X shares the
same pop account with Account A, which I guess is why this occurs.
Account X uses different From and Reply To addresses for a separate
business. Now I've set up a filter that trashes all the dupes except
those addressed to the business. Is this the most efficient way to do
this? Am I clear as mud?

M It's hard to tell what you are trying to achieve.

Just trying to navigate the land of the filters successfully, Marck.
:-) There seems to be something about it I just can't grasp easily.
Sorry to be so slow. These early filter difficulties are similar to
ones I had in a different mail program (which also promised an
excellent filter system) which was one of the reasons I abandoned it.

Thanks,

Thank you all for your advice on how to retrieve a deleted message.
That one has disappeared (where does it go when deleted from Trash?)
but it certainly helps to know the Control-Z command and how to browse
the trash folder.

Undo or retrieving deletes

2003-10-21 Thread P.Johnson
Hi all,

I just wrote a long reply and then deleted the whole thing
accidentally when trying to trim the earlier parts. To my dismay there
is no undo command -- an almost-necessity for people like me. Is
there a way to undo I may not have found, or a way to retrieve the
trashed message??

Failing that, can you direct me to some kind of auto-save function?

Sigh.

Thanks!

Yes I guess I did mean the mail headers-- and thank you, unchecking in
the View menu or toggling shift+ctl+k eliminates them.

I don't know why the sig is different now. I'll try and change it!

Caught between a rock and 2.0

2003-09-02 Thread P.Johnson
I'm confused now about upgrades and TB versions-- just registered
v1.62 on August 27. I was initially unaware they were asking another
50% for upgrade on Sept 1; by the time I caught on, my trial period
was over and I had to register to access my mail. Anyway like an idiot
I just downloaded version 2.0, somehow thinking I could have a look
without disrupting my current version. No. Well I tried to enter my
5-day old registration code. Did not compute.

So, can I go back to my previously registered 1.62 now that 2.0 has
installed overtop? Will I have to pay after 30 days to access my mail
again? I'm sorry but can't help resenting the cost of an upgrade after
such a short time. What are my options...?

Poor me: just want a decent, reliable, elegant mail program like The
Bat without too much hassle or feeling like I've been had. (BTW I'm
also torn between frustration with TB and admiration that they
actually released 2.0 on schedule. :-))

Any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

R Well, actually it is possible, but not solely with TB:
R Export the message
R Edit the subject with Notepad or another text editor.
R Import the message back into TB.
R Now you can delete the original message.

R One disadvantage of this method is the the received time/date gets

Roelof,
Can you tell me exactly how I would export and import back? I see an
