I didn't succeed in extracting the screen from the EXE, but - just in
case that anyone is interested - I found the solution to my problem:

In The Bat!'s directory I found a file "batlogo.xml", written by
Miroslav Florensen about five years ago, which directs "splash.png" to
the splash screen. I had inserted it, because I liked the idea to have
my own splash screen. Then I forgot about it. So my problem was
completely home-made. :)

It is stored within the EXE. If you use a tool like MultiExtractor you
can see all the files within an EXE-file.

You can check by yourself www.multiextractor.com. You can download a
demo version where you see what is inside however you can't save that.

A long time ago I added the screen of v3 to The Bat!'s directory as
"splash.png" on my PC because I liked it better than the new one. Now
I decided to want the new one of Christmas edition, but I cannot get
it. Removing/renaming splash.png results in no splash screen at all,

yes. I don't remember how it all works, back in the middle of 2005
there was discussion on some bat list about alternate ions, and I
fiddled around with some, and used a set called minimal for a while. I
dumped them but never changed the splash, known in my tb folder as
'splash.png' back. I don't recall, but I think that it must be
batlogo.xml which loads the splash screen.

If the "Batlogo.xml" is in the directory, the internal pictures are
ignored, and the specifications from the external XML are used.

If you liked to see the internal pictures from TheBat!, please delete

It shows up every time you start TB unless you pass the /NOLOGO parameter

1) Open the properties of the shortcut (desktop icon or start menu
entry, etc.) you use to call TB.
2) Add "/nologo" behind the path to thebat.exe in the 'Target' field.
(That field might then look likte this:
   "C:\Program Files\The Bat!\thebat.exe" /nologo)
3) From now onwards, when you use this short cut, the slash screen
will not annoy you any more.

Hi Christopher,

From the TB Help:

You can add some start-up parameters to it to define a set of actions
performed whenever you open the Shortcut. For example, if the Shortcut
is located in the Windows Startup folder, you may want to switch off
the The Bat! startup Logo by adding the /NOLOGO parameter, so the
"Target" property of the shortcut becomes something like this:

"C:\Program Files\The Bat!\TheBat.EXE" /NOLOGO

Actually, more like a "forebone" in the NT-based systems. In the Win9x

It doesn't even have to be on the toolbar; you could find the folder

James, a variation on this idea worked a treat, thank you for solving
the puzzle!

What I did was

(1) Scrap the batch file as you said,

(2) Create a link to TB! on my Quick Launch toolbar with included the
/nologo parameter,

(3) Configure the hotkey to point to that link instead of the program
exe as before and TB! launches without a splash screen.

Simple when you know how isn't it? :-)

Saw that a few minutes later - our messages crossed each other

is wrong. Can't help you there, only say, delete it and create it from

For a goof, try this:

-Open Windows Explorer and locate your TB program folder

-Right-Click drag THEBAT.exe to your desktop and choose "Create
Shortcut Here"

-Right-Click that newly created shortcut on the desktop and
choose "Properties".

-Append the path listed in the "Target" box with /nologo
(ensure there is a space before the /switch)

-Now, right-click drag that newly created shortcut to another
spot on the desktop and again choose "Create Shortcut Here".

- Change the name of this new shortcut to something more
descriptive like "HotShort".

- You've created a shortcut to a shortcut. Configure your
hotkey / button to launch the second level shortcut - HotShot.

Mark I just tried this and if I click on the batch file itself it
launches TB without the logo as it should do, so the batch file *is*
working as it should (and I made it right- my first batch file! ;-) so
it must be - as you say - something in the way the hotkey application

I believe somebody has already given an example, but here is a very
simple way:

- Open Notepad (Start - Programs - Accessories - Notepad)
- Put:
  c:\progra~1\thebat~1\thebat.exe /nologo
- Go to File - Save and type:
  "c:\thebat.bat"
Include the " " otherwise it'll save it as thebat.bat.txt.
- In your special keys map program, point it to run c:\thebat.bat

That should work just fine :)

How about making a batch file to call TB! with the /nologo and then
setting your hotkey to run the batch file?

I don't actually dislike the splash screen and I'm more than happy to
keep it - in fact when I tried launching TB via a Win shortcut and saw
no splash screen it seemed odd! I just wanted to flag up that the
nologo parameter doesn't work with hotkeys like mine and wondered
about a workaround out of interest.

Thanks again Allie!
The shortcut worked exactly as you said.
I use MailWasher sometimes as well...
To get it to work with mail washer you have to add double
quotes, like this:
"C:\Program Files\The Bat!\thebat.exe" "/NOLOGO"

A work around:

Call it from a batch file - seems appropriate somehow ;-). Create a text
file and rename it to tb.bat and then type the following and save:

@echo off
"C:\WIN Exchange\The Bat!\thebat.exe" /NOLOGO

The create a shortcut to the tb.bat in the same folder and right-click and
select properties. Select the 'Shortcut' tab and in the Run field change the
drop down box to 'Minimized'. Set the path to tb.bat and you'll have no more
splash screen :)

This works if you use the standard Windows shortcuts to launch TB but
it doesn't if - like me - you use a keyboard with MS Intellitype
Software enabled hotkeys. The mail key launches TB but if I try and
add the parameter above to the path in setting up the hotkey it states
invalid path and won't accept it. Is there a way of getting round
this - apart from not using the mail key which I won't not do - does
anyone know? (Note: the hotkey setup doesn't use the "quotes" around
the path as does the Windows shortcut).

Didn't I explain that some weeks ago? Very easy, usually I start TB!
from the shortcut on my desktop (I worked three years with OS/2, even
had an add-on, similar to dashboard, to emulate desktops on Win3.x).
Sometimes, twice a year or so I use the shortcut in the Start menu,
which I abhor.

And here it comes: After a file operation, e.g. an update, when I am
already in the working directory of TB! I click on the actual EXE.

But all in all your argument is worth much more. Mine held for 1.53bis
(or one of those betas), when the logo obstructed my dial-up password
window, as you may recall.

A very good point. Then again, the splash screen does only ever appear
when you start the program. How else do you start the program than
from a shortcut? I rarely open the explorer, find an executable and
run it raw . The only argument is that more technical
knowledge is needed to modify a shortcut than to flick an option
switch...
