As the others I haven't seen roguemoticons for a long time. I kept them in my
templates to look for the reason at a later time. In the meantime I left
Windows for Ubuntu and run TB! via Wine to keep my archive.

No, it's not just you. While they really don't work anymore, the
pictures would be so dated they would be more valuable to depict
a time and place of TB! users in history... :-D

I have not tried to change mine; Jack S. LaRosa mentioned earlier in

attempts to update it, and that he emailed Lief about it.

That's just the default; you can put it where you want.

It makes sense to me, at least as the location for the files
containing the actual emails: I think of emails as being "documents"
in much the same way as (most) files created in word or excel are
"documents." (Even so, I have my mail folder on a partition of its
own.)

For configuration files containing various settings it makes much less
sense to me. Maybe there should be further fragmentation, and such
files could live in a location under "Application Data." But are
things like templates and the address books (for example) documents or
settings?

"My Documents" and "Application Data" both sit somewhere under
"Documents and Settings" on my Windows version (XP)...

Yes, the way they used to do things was much simpler. But with
"Administrator" and "User" accounts in XP, the user may be running TB!
under an account that doesn't have write access in the "Program Files"
directory.

I can see your point. However, there could be exceptions.
My MAIL folder is in my DOCUMENTS folder. This makes no
sense to me. I would prefer to have files/folders
indigenous to TB contained in the program folder because
that's where I would look for them. I would never have
thought to look in my DOCUMENTS folder for the MAIL folder.

Correspondence with this list is very limited so yes, I do
usually compose in HTML. I have a "%SetEditor="1"%" macro
in my AB "New Message" template for this list.

I take it you usually compose HTML but use plaintext for your TBUDL
messages. I rarely use HTML in email, so don't see that problem.

But I do find that saving a message as draft and then re-opening it to
continue editing causes TB! to forget settings to sign or encrypt the
message, which occasionally leads to sending messages "in the clear"
that should have been encrypted.

I don't know that it CANNOT be fixed unless it's the
Obamacare website. In my case key folders got relocated
without my knowledge. Thanks to Miguel and MFPA I knew
*what* to look for and where they were supposed to be. Once
I found them (elsewhere in the TB *program* folder) and put
them back where they belonged, everything worked again. I
remember when this happened to me last time it was solved
because I finally realized that my Rogue's folder was buried
in the *parent* Rogues folder. The Bat didn't know to look
any deeper than the parent Rogue's folder for the images.

R> They could easily take pictures out of the address book and put them in the
R> same place (which it does but I am getting black spaces in v6)

Surely you don't have every Rogue's address and picture in
your address book. I've never tried that and so can't
imagine why you're getting black spaces where the photo
should be.

I can only assume that to give TB the versatility that it
has then it has to be as convoluted as it is unfortunately.

Speaking of convoluted, I just noticed that if I save a
draft or save the final message, if I re-open it to continue
editing, it has defaulted to HTML instead of the Plain Text
in which it was originally written. If I don't catch it,
the message never gets sent to the list because it's HTML.

AHA! You may have provided a key to my troubles.

I ran these searches just now - I don't have your utility, but I
didfind a club big enough to force WinDoze to search
subfolders. No joy. WinDoze is quite certain those files don't
exist anywhere in the file structure. I'm not altogether
convinced, but I'm not sure how much more time I can give this
thing.

Now I'm wondering whether the fact that TB! is installed to my
work drive, not to c:\windows\programfilesx86 might be the
problem.

I've been running it off the work partition for at least several
releases, so it didn't occur to me that that could be causing
issues. If so, I'm thinking it might be better to
reinstall to the conventional folder.

Otherwise, it looks like I'm going to have to abandon TB!,
because it really has become unusable here, with no filters and
no view pane. I have to load every mail just to id it - lots of
list mail, and it takes as long to load a 'me too' message as an
informative one. It's also decided not to bother with sig files,
except in this isp account. Not mission critical, but more time
wasted pasting them in manually.

Or, I might load Voyager to a 16G thumb drive ... I do have the
dl, but I haven't found the list messages very encouraging, so I
haven't done anything with it.

Getting pretty desperate ... but I'm not willing to give up the
computer yet. But you know ... email is key!

Cheers!

Exactly. It still doesn't work. I emailed Leif back in May and he replied
thusly: "I'll take a look at it. I wrote that code eons ago and its been static
through numerous server upgrades and migrations." I copied that same email from
Leif and emailed it to him yesterday and he replied again: "I'll look at it.
It's been through a couple server moves and I probably missed a dependency with

So, I dunno. Have to wait and see I guess.

Neither the text file "pcwsmileys.msl" nor the folder "pcwimages" exist anywhere
on my computer.

CANCEL RED ALERT! File/folder found! I have a program called SEARCH EVERYTHING
(http://www.voidtools.com/) which will find anything you type in it's search bar
(I thought). Using that program showed me that the two files above didn't
exist, but of course, they did. I don't know why the program failed to find
them but they were buried where they shouldn't have been within The Bat!

In searching the web for references to this problem I found some old
correspondence from Miguel where he lists the files/folders which should be in
TB's Images folder. As a last-ditch effort I searched around my TB folder in
PROGRAM FILES (x86) and opened every folder in there. Lo and behold, there they
were. Moving them to the IMAGES folder solved everything. How they got moved
in the first place I have no idea except that I vaguely remember the problem
starting after my last TB upgrade.

There's not an extra level of folders like last year? (See
)

Those are links to messages on TBUDL from late May 2012, with some of
the numbers replaced by dots. The full message-ids are:-

Just click (or maybe double-click) and the message will open, if TB!
can find it.

And I've not suggested anything that was not in the archives from last
year. Rogues and pcwsmileys not working when basic smileys being fine
would suggest to look carefully at the contents of your
"%ProgramFiles%\The Bat!\Images" folder before ploughing too deeply
into settings. Of course, I may be talking complete rubbish.

Other email program may allow it to add a photo to the address book. You
could say that the roguemoticons are nothing but a collection of "address
book photos".

The only advantage is that you don't need an address book entry for each
and every person which supplied a roguemoticon.

Hi Eric,

Here some instructions that were very helpful to me:

How do you insert the X-Rogue: header?
You can do that with this macro:
  %SetHeader("X-Rogue",":your_handle:")%-
in your templates for this and other tb-lists.
However, only the macro won't do the trick.
TB'll say: 'Hey, that's no RFC822 header', so you'll have to define
  it as such:
Options -> Preferences -> Messages -> Message headers -> 'Add'
Now you'll get a pop-up to define the header
Display as: X-Rogue (or whatever, it isn't very important)
RFC header: X-Rogue
Uncheck: 'This field is an address list' (because it isn't)
Check: 'Allow this field to be edited in the message editor'
Uncheck: 'Display this field in the scrollable part of the header pane'
Now you're done and every TB-user can see your lovable face when
  (s)he's installed the roguemoticons.

Your picture is not showing up. I took a look at your X-Rogue header.
It appears you have mistyped your handle. Currently, your X-Rogue
header is ":Eric_T" (minus the quotes of course). It should have an
ending colon as well. So, it should be ":Eric_T:" (again, minus the
quotes).

And Marck could put the Roguemoticon link and the PCWSmileys link

If you can't make the information in the above sentence out, just

Tell me--you know this Ian, it's just to encourage others to share and
let me know who's sharing, that is, uploading an image--

Tell me, in the e-mail, which of 7 places the image falls as to
copyright status:

1) Uploading person owns the image and gives permission to distribute it.

2) Uploading person believes the image is in the public domain, and is
here giving the place it was obtained from, with the reason it appears
to be in the public domain--if it's a website, the URL, too, please,
   if you have it.

3) Uploading person believes the image is under copyright and appends the
chain of correspondence through which was obtained the copyright
owner's permission for distribution through the PCWSmileys data base.

4) Uploading person got the emoticon from www.emoticons4u.com ,
which is a site where the website owner, Niels Kolb, has sent permission
to use emoticons from, in addition to his opinion that all the emoticons
there are in the public domain. Or,

5) Uploading person got the flag being uploaded from

http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/docs/flagsoftheworld.html

the only site we know of, so far, where the flag images appear to
   be in the public domain.

6) If it's an Avatar, the situation may be complex. Write to me the
copyright status circumstances of any image used in the Avatar.

7) Personal pet photos that you own are most welcome. Please send them
as jpegs or gifs--better around 5 to 10 Kb and fairly small dimensions,
to fit well on a page of text when used there. But if you can't get
them down in size, send an attachment to me by PM. I have Irfanview
(an image program) and I can do that for you. Personally, I very much
enjoy seeing other people's pets. I've recently put up two pictures of

It can be downloaded from http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/smileys/rogues.zip

I've made a little .bat file, which is executed when a new person in
the rogues is announced. It simply downloads the file and unzips it:

cd "C:\Program files\TheBat\Images"
"C:\Program files\wget\wget.exe" -N http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/smileys/rogues.zip
"C:\Program files\PKWARE\PKZIPC\pkzipc.exe" -extract -overwrite=all "C:\Program
files\TheBat\Images\rogues.zip"

It uses wget (free from
http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/wget.html#downloading) and pkzip (not
free http://www.pkware.com/), but any command line zip tool will do.
Note that older versions of pkunzip are avalible for free, but they do
not understand long file names, and are useless in this case.

If many people starts to auto download the rogues file, it may be hard
for the server when new people are announced. In that case it would
help to make a file with e.g. the 10 newest images and the settings file.

Thanks very much Roelof! I did the steps you described and I think it
works now. Cool feature!
Thanks again for the help =)

You may be using the the plain text viewer to read your email. If so,
the method you are using to insert your "roguemoticon" won't show up.
Instead, try following these instructions which Roelof posted
recently:

However, as I'm a plain text type and don't use the RTV except for
testing purposes, I'd prefer everybody placing their roguemoticon in
the X-Rogue: header and not in the signature, since the latter won't
show when you're using the plain text viewer.

Okay, how do you insert the X-Rogue: header?
Uncheck: 'Display this field in the scrollable part of the header
pane'
Now you're done and every TB-user can see your lovable face when
(s)he's installed the roguemoticons.

Hallo Darrin,

live), you wrote:

That should work for RTV users with smileys enabled. However when you
haven't enabled the smileys (Options -> Pref -> Viewer/editor) or when
you're using the plan text viewer it won't show.
That's why I wrote this a week ago in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

There are two options:
1) You haven't downloaded the archive with your roguemoticon in it or
2) You're using RTV without smileys enabled or you're using plain text
view, your face will only show when marked in an X-Rogue header.
