I'm in the US and routinely apply for grants through grants.gov, since almost
all federal funding agencies (except the NSF, as far as I know) use it. In my
experience there is no other way but to use adobe reader. So i boot into
windows and do it there. If enough of us complain, especially
I got a new desktop with an SSD and and HDD and I need to put a proper

personal files (documents, pictures), i.e., the Home Folder, which
grimlock, how do you get all these cool things on the right (temperature, the

Thanks grimlok, that's easier than I thought it would be!
Assuming that a person installs Debian, but only the free software components
of it, what are the technical advantages of Trisquel over Debian?
Thanks Magic Banana. Yes, I am aware of the ethical and philosophical
advantages of Trisquel over Debian. So yes, my question assumes a free
Debian install where no non-free software repositories are used and so on. I
want to testdrive Debian to examine its user-friendliness for a non-expert
I use LibreOffice Impress and LibreOffice Draw for this type of posters.

Actually Debian does list Zotero Standalone as available in it's
repositories:
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/main/zotero-standalone
But I see unstable in the URL. I suppose that's why it's not yet in Ubuntu
and in Trisquel. And I suppose this also means that once it becomes stable
This is for future reference if anyone else interested in installing Zotero
Standalone on Trisquel:
Zotero Standalone is already in the repositories of Debian unstable and
should be in the Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) repositories. So it will
eventually be available for Trisquel too.
Because Zotero Standalone is free software approved by FSF, I will now
provide the installation instructions:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:smathot/cogscinl
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install zotero-standalone
Also, it should be available through the repositories (so it can be installed
Unfortunately this installs the firefox (Abrowser) add-on, but not the Zotero
Stanalone.
Is it possible to have installed software that then doesn't appear in the
list of installed applications in Add/Remove Applications or in Synaptic? I
can run Zotero Standalone (by executing the shell script that came with the
tar file), but it doesn't appear anywehre in the lisit of
How do I submit a proposal for a particular package (Zotero) to be added to
the Trisquel repositories?
Thanks
Below is how I installed Zotero, but please let me know if this method is
good and how I make it autoupdate when I update the system with Update
Manager.
First, I am pretty sure that Zotero is free
(http://www.zotero.org/support/licensing) and I have seen it's browser add-on
recommended
On the same topic, the Zotero LibreOffice add-in won't install... Has anyone
had any luck with that?
I don't find this software, truecrypt, in the FSF directory, but from reading
the license, it seems to be free - the full detailed source code is
available, you can modify it, distribute it, etc.:

Thanks icarolongo. Darn... That's unfortunate, since I found it easier to use
than any other package in Trisqual that does the same.
Fortunately I saved the uninstall instructions: sudo truecrypt-uninstall.sh
which removed it.
I had already imported my public and private keys and Seahorse was already
installed, but righ-clicking on a file did not give the encrypt or sign

sudo apt-get install seahorse seahorse-nautilus
as you suggested did the job - now I have that option when I
I can't figure out how to encrypt files in Trisquel using the Gnu Privacy
Guard (GPG). In Window$ you right-click on any file and chose Encrypt. That
option is not available in Trisquel. It is sad that there is a good help
website for the Win users, but an outdated fairly useless for the GNU

I also seem to have found a directory from where I can start all
applications, it is:
/usr/share/applications
Is there an easy way to create a shortcut to this location on the desktop or
in the taskbar next to Abrowser's icon?
I did, but gedit and PGP, and I am sure other applications too, do not even
appear in there. But I can see in Synaptic that they are installed and should
be available, somewhere.
I see that there are some applications (like gedit, which opens when I open a
text file) that have a GUI, but are not listed under Accessories or any other
category of applications.
Another example, I see that I have a package installed called
python-gnupginterface, a Python interface to
How about other applications, like the Python interface to GnuPG (GPG)? I
typed the name of the package (python-gnupginterface) in the terminal, but
that didn't start the application GPG. Typing Abrowser's package name, which
is abrowser, starts the browser, but others don't start when I
I'll try that, but how do I install the PACKAGENAME? I tried by searching for
it in Synaptic and in Add/Remove applications, but the search came empty?
Let me try to express my question a little better (and more accurately):
1. In Add/Remove Applications I can see all installed applications, including
these two, for example: gedit and GNOME Desktop Utilities.
2. Neither of these two shows up when I click Start/Accessories, or any other

is the non-free microcode referring to the BIOS?
You are right - I tried all suggestions above and the best I could do is make
the printer spit out a blank page. Thanks to everyone for helping me try.
Sorry, I didn't mean to send it yet... At any rate, I tried installing by
chosing the option Search for Printer Driver to Download, but that didn't
do anything (I don't think this worked at all, it didn't give me any serarch
results etc.). The 3rd option it gives me is to provide a ppd file.
I successfully installed a printer Brother MFC-7420 on Trisquel 6. It appears
to install fine (using a driver for 7450, not 7420), but when I try to print,
even a test page, it won't print. The printer screen says Receiving Data, but
no page comes out. Installing with the 2nd drived (not the
I am still very inexperienced with Trisquel, but to my knowledge, if it is
not available through the repositories, that's probably because it is not
free (Libre) software.

I am trying to upgrade from 5.5 to 6.0. My home folder says that it has 8.7
GB of free space. But then during the upgrade I get this message:
Not enough free disk space
The upgrade has aborted. The upgrade needs a total of 1060 M free
space on disk
Thank you Quiliro. I cleaned it, but still have only 999MB available on /.
Is there an easy way for me to give the / some of the disk space that is
now available in the /home?
Uninstalling a few packages that I will reinstall later did the trick. Thank
you for the creative suggestions. I was about to try gparted, but I am glad I
didn't, it would have taken longer and I may have messed up.
I just upgraded Trisquel 5.5 to 6. I see that the LibreOffice version on my
computer is 3.5, while the LibreOffice.org website shows 4.0 to be the latest
version. I tried upgrading through Synaptic Manager and through Update

By the way, I just read this about LibreOffice 4.0:

full functionality. JRE is not part of the LibreOffice installation package,
it should be installed separately

after reading in the link from oysterboy that

by adding ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-0 to your system's Software Sources
I am quite new to Trisquel, so I am sure that it would be very hard for me to
do that. I'll just leave LibreOffice at 3.5 and trust the Update Manager. It
is not that I needed 4.0 for any particular reason, I just assumed that
something may be wrong with my update manager since it did
Thanks everyone! Now both Tomb and Cryptkeeper are both installed and
running. I appreciate everyone's help. Now I will try to learn how to use
them.
The command
sudo tomb open
gives me this:
[*] Commanded to open tomb

. Using encryption with swap activated is very bad, because some files, or
even your secret key, could be written on hard disk.

Thanks teodorescup. I installed cryptkeeper. Where do I find it though? I
looked under Accessories, Games, Internet, Office, etc. It is not near the
clock in the bottom right of the screen either. In Windows and in Ubuntu I
know where to find newly installed programs, but it doesn't seem to
I understand from this site:
http://www.ghacks.net/2009/09/27/add-cryptkeeper-for-on-the-fly-encrypted-folders-in-linux/
that an icon (an image of a key) is supposed to appear in the tray. It
doesn't. I installed Crpyptkeeper through Trisquel's own Add/Remove Programs
option, so it must be
I run these commands in the terminal but I don't see any of the files in the
home directory of the 2nd user. And I don't know what you mean by doesn't

Thanks!
Next I will respond to the question about how my installation of Tomb failed.
I can't remember the steps when I tried to install Tomb before, so I just
tried installing again and got this:
user@user-Latitude-D830:~$ sudo apt-get install tomb
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
tomb is already the newest version.

I like what Tomb is supposed to be able to do, but unfortunately I did not
manage to install it. I will use the method suggested by 5gon12eder above -
create another user account. Is there a way for me access that other user's
files without logging out? I don't see the files in the home
I did indeed encrypt the whole disk. But I am trying to password protect
access to multiple files of different types (text files, pdf, spreadsheets,
etc.) that contain sensitive information. That's in case I am logged in and
someone uses my computer. This happens occasionally. With Windows,
I don't see the two screenshots that I attached... I hope you do. If not, I
will retry attachingn them. I didn't check the List box, this may be why
they're not visible...
And for the partitions that I chose to format, should I chosee to use them
as: Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, ReiserFS, btrfs, JFS, XFS, FAT 16, or FAT 32? I am
sorry if all these are stupid questions.
OK, trying again to attach the screenshots... I hope this works

OK, I think sda5, sda7, and sda9 have the gnewsense and ubuntu. So I will
format them. How about the sda2, 8, and 10? Should I format them too? It says
their type is SWAP or no type listed...
Thanks Aliasbody!
I just run the command mount in the terminal on the computer on which I
am installing Trisquel now. I am now working off the CD. I think this is what
you indicated. I get this:
trisquel@trisquel:~$ mount
/cow on / type overlayfs (rw)
proc on /proc type proc
I highlighted each partition (other than sda2 and 3) one at a time and then
clicked on the delete button. That combined the blank partitions. Then I
double clicked on the now combined partition and created root, home, and swap
partitions, chose Logical partition, and all worked great! The
Dear Experts,
Is there a program or application for Trisquel that allows the user to create
a folder or volume or virtual drive on the computer that requires password
for accessing the files in that folder?
Thanks
Stefano, yes, the Tor installation problem has been solved.
Thanks to everyone for your technical help and for your thought!
Just installed Trisquel for the first time and I am learning my way around.
I think that I have Tor installed, because the command:
sudo apt-get install tor
gives me this:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
tor is already the newest
Wow, this worked like magic, thank you very much! I wish the Tor site had
this instruction in their directions for GNU/Linux installations so I
wouldn't have to bother you.
Thanks again!
Thank you Stefano! I run both commands. For the 2nd however, I got this:
apt-get autoremove

How do I tell it I am root? I created the
