GNOME Flashback: https://wiki.gnome.org/action/show/Projects/GnomeFlashback Well and alive (at least in Ubuntu and Debian) and recognised by GNOME.

exactly what the page I linked to says :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Toutatis Brightness control
Glad to hear that. For extra credits you could see if the xev command sees the Fn+right combo. I guess it must because you get the indicator. If you get a keysym you could use xbindkeys to bind it to a script.
[Trisquel-users] Unable to type anything when Hindi is selected from boot menu
Its is likely the case for all languages. We have to manually chose English keyboard from gnome control center to be able to type anything. I think the keyboad should be set to English by default at least for Indian languages as only interface language is normally expected.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
If gnewsense is not an option, then trisquel is the only system if you not very skilled on computers? If fsf's requirements about free software are that strict, that debian cannot be endorsed and trisquel is not managed on a level that is acceptable, shouldn't fsf take charge and provide a fsfos, that is maintained by fsf and applies to its standards? Is it lack of money, that is holding fsf back? I cannot find financial numbers about fsf on their website. If users of free software systems are counted in thousands and not millions, then resources should be allocated in one place and I think fsf has the brand. Fsf should be much more aggressive on crowdfundings. They should say, if you want an up to date free software system, then join this crowdfunding. If the money asked for is meet, you will get it. Else not. The same goes for a midrange free software notebook. Ubuntu phone was able to gather millions. Can't fsf do the same thing about a free software notebook? If the money is gathered, you get the computer. Else you do not. Probably because there is not enough users? I should direct these questions to fsf. And probably will.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
The fsf doesn't care at all about practical issues, e.g. if there is a somewhat usable free operating system out there, they don't see any problem and will endorse it, no matter how problematic it is to use it in real life.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Jitsi doesn't start anymore
I run Trisquel 7 now. I installed jitsi from the repos and it crashes all the time. Whether or not ther is activity on the ap afer I log i it always crashes. The following link has the output when I start jitsi from the CLI: http://pastebin.com/GfCfsgsd Help would be much appreciated. I tried the IRC channel and I thought I will also post it here. I think jitsi is better than pidgin. And I would like to use that. Cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
What a strange thing to say. Of course they do like everybody else but it's simply not their first priority. Proprietary software is useless even when it would be otherwise usable. The Free software foundation is primarily concerned with... surprise surprise... software freedom. And it's unique in that regard. Only free software can be studied. Only free software can be improved. Only free software can be shared. Only free software should be used.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
GNewSense is an option, just not a really useful option for most people since it's based on Debian 6 (and therefore has really old software).

Guys The subject of this forum is off track completly, THAT INCLUDES ME! What we should be asking and searching for; What other options of OSI are available under the FSF sponsor? The reality-check is: Hard decisions are going to be made individually, either you keep Trisquel or dump it overall. I versed PREVIOUSLY: Trisquel Ver 6 was fine with me, it serve its purpose. Until the upgrade of ver7 was rush in, with major issues. Surely it did irrated lots of people. My points of anger as a user. 1- The failure point is on the developer for hes lack of communication to the public through the forums. 2- Not accepting others help as Trisquel developing members. slows the process of updates. 3- The single and most irritable concept, the developer is too selffish to take any kind of positive advice, no one. is taking hes title of Founder of Trisquel but, he should listen better. 4- A lot of us want Trisquel to succeed as a top-notch Distro. but apparently Trisquel is losing steam among the users. 5- I would like to read from the developer only: what are hes goals for Trisquel in the future? Respectfully

[Trisquel-users] trouble getting a fresh install on gluglug
Hey guys, I followed the directions in the libreboot documentation for installation, and I get to the options to try without installing, etc, but when I hit enter to try without installing, install, or even install from text mode, it hangs. You can install extensions from https://extensions.gnome.org (gcampax seems to have authored most of the extensions for GNOME Classic: https://extensions.gnome.org/accounts/profile/gcampax ). GNOME Shell's extension mechanism is fantastic. It is sad many users do not know it exists. Another essential item to read about is http://wiki.gnome.org/GnomeShell/CheatSheet
[Trisquel-users] Re : Geforce 8400gs and how to read nouveau freedesktop.org graphic card listing?
Nouveau handles all nVidia cards but the very oldest and the newest... but the support level greatly varies! ThinkPenguin chose to sell the GeForce 8400GS because all its main features are working and the performances obtained with nouveau are close to those obtained with the proprietary driver : http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articleitem=nvidia_nouveau_q111 I would assume that the other cards of the NV20 family would be good choices as well. I have never seen Linux-libre running such a card though...

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel v7 - where is my unity?
I'm pretty sure it never was (it's just that you needed to configure compiz before getting Unity to work - what was called the Unity Session was really the Compiz Session, except that in (vanilla) Ubuntu user directories are given config files by default that tell compiz to use the needed plugins (unity, expo, decoration, etc).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
Well, a lot of work is left for us as well as the developer/s (literally!!) Happy to know that Ruben seems reviewing the workflow and plans to rework on Trisquel webpages. True, once the developers meeting is up, lets hope the project gets real boost. My views on Trisquel goes like this:- 1. We should understand that maintaining a project itself is a hard nut and Ruben is giving his best efforts. We should not rush to conclusions. The project is still at a nascent stage in terms of organisational structure; we should give it time to mature, naturally so that we get a community similar to Debian. 2. FSF provides Trisquel GNU/Linux OS as a gift to Associate members in a USB bootable card. It shows the belief that Trisquel has achieved from FSF over years, not only as a Free Distro but as a competent Replacement to any modern proprietary OS. 3. GNU website shows Trisquel Desktop snapshot to describe how well a Free Software can be, as a counterpart to any non-free Software in terms of ease of use and reliability; One more golden feather to Trisquel's effort. 4. Out of four Linux distros I have tried (Ubuntu, Debian, Gnewsense and Trisquel), Only Trisquel have the stability second to Debian, advanced software second to Ubuntu and ease of use/EUI second to Gnewsense.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cannot get widescreen resolution and use multiple monitors in Trisquel 7, like I could in Trisquel 6
It was automatically removed when I removed xserver-xorg-video-ati.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cannot get widescreen resolution and use multiple monitors in Trisquel 7, like I could in Trisquel 6
Thanks for explaining! I booted Trisquel 6 in live mode from a CD, to compare things with Trisquel 7. The same xserver-xorg-video-* packages were installed (but perhaps using different versions; I didn’t check that). `/etc/modprobe.d/` includes the same files with the same contents. `/etc/X11/xorg.conf{,vesa}` seemed identical too. So none of the things to try that I’ve found when researching—removing packages, blacklisting modules and editing xorg.conf—should make any difference. My guess is that it just _happened_ to work for me in Trisquel 6. Something probably got updated in Trisquel 7 that now detects my graphics card. In the end I decided to go back to Trisquel 6. I’ll use that until I feel like getting a new computer. (I actually had more problems with Trisquel 7, which contributed to this decision: gnome-panel took a long time to appear, running for example `rm somefile` or `gvim .` printed warings or errors, and while upgrading I got a message saying that 'initramfs-tools' couldn’t be installed. But this is off-topic. Just noting. After a few days of trying to fix things I got tired of it, and needed a working computer again.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cannot get widescreen resolution and use multiple monitors in Trisquel 7, like I could in Trisquel 6
For the free software movement it would be a big win if somebody could come up with a way to ignore “bad” graphics cards in favor of better built-in graphics.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Tp link librecmc wifi router on an isp modem with public address?
Probably wise to do a search on your ISP's name and 'modem mode router setup' just to see if anyone has extracted the details from them, perhaps add your modem model number if there are too many results. However, if 90% of routers work with it, then LibreCMC definitely will. I'd suggest making sure you know how to tether your mobile or borrowing a 3g USB dongle against you needing support, but the search above should find enough for you if there's anything special to do.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
Again, as stated above, the note about switching away from GNU/Linux was sarcasm. The intent of that note was to show that, as long as you're giving up part of your freedom for a working GNU/Linux computer, you might as well just give up control over your computing, back to Microsoft or Apple.

It is possible to install unity in Trisquel 7 (and run it from terminal), but not to choose it in lightdm at login to actually use it as a standard DE. Therefore I consider it broken at the moment.

I think what you probably need is ubuntu-session.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Pro/Con thinking of getting the TPE-NWIFIROUTER
Maybe @Chris from Thinkpenguin will answer, in the meantime: The Reddit criticism is mainly from people who don't believe the freedom is first priority. As one commenter points out the age of the chipset is not really a detriment if the speed is adequate to your Internet connection's speed. The other criticism seems to be of a similar nature - from someone who buys the latest thing with the biggest number rather than take a realistic look at what they actually need and will use. E.g. a recent review of 802.11ac routers on the register.co.uk pointed out that only one laptop they knew of shipped was capable of 400Mb/s speeds, let alone faster. So the poster talking of 900Mb/s probably needs their x substitute complex checking. The Trisquel thread is about how someone with more time than money might be able to buy the same thing and flash it themselves for less. Then about how it is not an ADSL router - which it plainly isn't and the need for an additional ADSL to Ethernet modem (which I'm personally not convinced is what he's getting from his ISP in a meaningful way) is well known and documented. Of note is that if you want to run the risk of doing it yourself there is also a very specific revision of one model of a Buffalo ethernet router supported by LibreWRT, another GNU FSDG / FSF approved small system distro. Other than these two for purpose built routers the rest are merely shades of grey and black risks in respect of security and Five Eyes/Snowden issues. (E.g. one major UK ISP (BT) mandates its own router which is known to have a backdoor considered to probably be for the use of GCHQ, police and others). As someone else has pointed out before on the forum the third solution is to use a second desktop [e.g. your old one] with a second NIC, WiFi and a switch. However, AFAIK there are no libre firewall distros so there'll be quite some config work. Plus the power/space requirements rule this out for most family homes I know of. The bottom line is the TP router being preloaded, having vendor support and RYF certification is a win for most people. Which is why I pre-ordered one of the new batch. Leny
[Trisquel-users] how to use gnome-shell-extensions package?

[Trisquel-users] Free standard to create interactive web apps?

Is there anyway to have the same program open in two separate workspaces? I'm using Gnome Shell in Trisquel 7.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to use gnome-shell-extensions package?
The extensions show up for me. You need to log out and log back in (or maybe reboot, I'm not sure) before they show up, though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't type in Japanese anymore
It's the ibus-anthy package, not just the regular language pack. I had exactly the same problem with old versions of Trisquel. Honestly, I think it would be nice if Anthy was installed by default, but oh well. The solution is very simple.

[Trisquel-users] archive file formats
Wikipedia says that the zip file format was released into the public domain. Does that mean that it's free? How does zip compare to other archiving formats? Does the answer change depending on the archive material size (eg 5mb, 500mb, 50gb)? Zip seems like a good option for a workplace, partly because the big proprietary operating systems support it. If you think that this reasoning is wrong, please tell me. I also have to password protect the archive. If I password my zip file, will Archive Manager encrypt the contents of the archive reliably (like how I assume GPG would)?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Pro/Con thinking of getting the TPE-NWIFIROUTER
For those who know I use ADSL and are wondering why bought one. Have you heard what RMS says about the UK and followed recent news here? In Gnome Shell, can you right click Abrowser -- open new window? I'm just guessing ... I don't have Gnome Shell
Re: [Trisquel-users] archive file formats
ZIP is free and has popular free implementations. Recent software handles big archives (see ZIP64). 7z produce smaller files at slower compression and bigger memory usage: decide what's important if you can install software there. On Unix-like systems tar archives compressed by gzip (same compression as ZIP) or XZ (LZMA, like in 7z) are more popular. They compress all files at once, unlike ZIP where each file is compressed separately (so ZIP cannot use redundancy between different files in an archive, while gzip can if the files are nearby). I don't know how well ZIP handles archives, tar has useful features for backups. There are better formats for some special cases, e.g. initramfs compressed with a less efficient method with a very fast decompressor is better. signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] archive file formats
Zip uses the same algorithm as Gzip, DEFLATE. The main difference is Zip uses it individually on each file, whereas Gzip uses it on the entire archive collectively, making Gzip better. I don't think there's really a good reason to use Zip, except to give something to a Windows user (since Windows only supports Zip archives out-of-the-box). For password protection, as far as I know the best choice is 7-zip. Install the p7zip package to get full support for that format. The 7-zip format encrypts archives with the strongest form of AES, which from my understanding is OK (the U.S. government trusts it for top-secret stuff, for instance).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Use same programs in different workspaces
I wonder how many seconds apart our replies were You win this time MB
Re: [Trisquel-users] archive file formats
By the way, here's a rundown of the formats I'd recommend: tar.gz: Quick, basic compression. Best choice for small files, since the extra compression of other formats doesn't help much. tar.xz or tar.lzma: Slower, much better compression. A good choice for really big files. 7z: Basically the same type of compression as tar.xz (LZMA), but has some additional features: it prevents redundant files from increasing the file size, offers encryption (password protection), and offers splitting one archive into multiple files. tar.bz2 used to be a useful format for large files, but LZMA (tar.xz) makes it so bz2 is now only ever useful if some software handling the archive is incompatible with LZMA. It's pretty much in between tar.gz and tar.xz.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble getting a fresh install on gluglug
I also have a GLUGLUG Libreboot X60s but have yet to upgrade to Trisquel 7. I was waiting for it to bed down a little before making the jump. What kernel version are you running at the moment? I'm running the latest update v3.2.0.70.84 available from the toutatis update archive. I believe Trisquel 7 needs v3.13 at least. Could this explain your issues? This is a point that has always confused me. The kernel available in the toutatis-updates archive is several versions behind the linux-libre kernel available from the FSFLA or http://jxself.org/linux-libre/.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Use same programs in different workspaces
Thank you Magic Banana and Muhammed, it worked. :)
[Trisquel-users] Re : archive file formats
My recommendations would differ: GZIP is speed matters (it may even be faster than copying the original files), XZ if size matters... and speed usually matters when the archive is GB large (you do not want to spend hours compressing).

Newbee Q: When installing new applications on standard install trisquel. Where do you find your applications (like icons - not hencing to cli applications). (In a gnome shell or unity you can search for them, but how to do this in standard trisquel install?)
Re: [Trisquel-users] archive file formats
Most workplaces install a third party compression utility on top of W$. All those I know of and Apple stuff understand GZIPed TAR named .tgz. If yours haven't get the admins to install 7-zip which AIUI is free software. Otherwise you'll probably run into problems with some older machines still having the 4GB zip boundary problem. .tar.gz is a better format for all and doesn't have the4GB problem. If they've got 7-Zip you can also use .tar.xz for even higher compression. My personal preference for encrypting archives is to use GPG. Then you've got more control over who can open it than just a password. Plus, as you can tell from Internet Banking routinely requiring you use a token if you want to be able to transfer noticeable amounts of money, a password alone is not great security. Domestic users generally value convenience too much for strong security measures which really need admin time to do it properly, e.g. how many of the people here check their logs for signs of intrusion? With the reputation of China's security services being they're actively interested in industrial espionage over the Internet and with so many intrusions reported publicly in goverment reports each year I wouldn't advise any workplace to rely on just passwords for any data at all.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel v7 - where is my unity?
Judging by the ubuntu-session package description it indeed seems like the missing piece. However installing it didn't add anything in the lightdm menu. Running dpkg-query -L ubuntu-session shows that there are only documentation files included in the package, but no real .desktop or .session files (or any other files outside /usr/share/doc) that could have any timpact.

[Trisquel-users] hd video with abrowser
I was recently introduced to viki.com and noticed that in some (non-free) browsers, it provided an option for HD viewing. When I use Abrowser, it forces 360p and sometimes the subtitles are off. It looks like they're using Flow Player. Is there a way (using Libre software, of course) to get the HD option and have the subtitles keep up? It looks like an HTML5 player. Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] hd video with abrowser
It looks like an HTML5 player. Being an HTML5 player, sadly, doesn't mean much anymore these days... :( My research indicates that proprietary software is downloaded into your computer and then run in the browser when the videos are loaded and played. When I block this, the videos do not play. Hence, it appears that this proprietary software is necessary in order to watch anything at all, at any resolution. EDIT: Update, it appears that the current version of youtube-dl can be used to grab videos from this site, once you give it the URL for the page containing the movie. That at least seems to avoid the issue I mentioned but the downloaded videos are still 360p. There doesn't seem to be a way to watch them in HD and still be using only free software in the process.
