Oh ok. thnx for explaining. It's good someone's keeping an eye on stuff like
that. :)
Hi and thanks for all your help. I think I did click Main Server; anyway I'll
try again and hope it'll work. I was in the main system when I did it and I
was in the Admin account so I couldn't understand why when I downloaded it
and tried to run it I was denied. Thanks. :)
Hello I got GNOME shell and sessions again and now I need to know how to back
all this up so if I lose it again I can reinstall it as it is.
Thank you all for your help and patience, I know how frustrating it is giving
tech support especially when the techie can't see what's going on and the
hi and thanks again. I realize I need to understand instructions if I want
help here, if I were giving advice I'd expect that too.
Usually I don't uninstall something when I have problems, at the time it
seemed like the only solution, since my other ideas failed.
I have to reinstall the
Hello Hack and Hack, thanks for all your help. I was looking at some messages
here about browser tweaks and saw some posts from you. The info was good to
see, but I noticed the discussion was locked, same with a similar thread.
Also I see you mentioned Diaspora, I'm there too. My tech guy is
hello thnx for answering. Sorry you left D but I understand. When I'm in a
tech mood, uh, feeling daring and adventurous, I'll try your suggestions.
After the mess I made last week my confidence is a bit damaged. Your
instructions seem fairly straight forward, but I've never done anything
Recently I also made the switch, thanks to someone I met on a DIaspora pod.
There's a lot of GNU people on those pods, they link to FSF, on one pod I saw
Richard Stallman. My name was different there. I read a lot about FSF and
linked up with someone who offered to help me convert an old HP
I tried all the cursor options they didn't seem much different.
I tried downloading the GNOME Shell and session, but I can't see any
difference except for an icon by my name at login. Either I messed up, or
there's an incompatibility
I've done everything I can with the Treak Tool too. So for now I'm stuck with
a frustrating reading experience. Too bad
Hi, I looked around at the settings again, under Themes I did look there
awhile ago there's no option to enlarge the cursor. Yes the combination with
the Super key is very finicky, I can't get that combo to work nohow,
occasionally I can get another shortcut combo to work, by sheer luck I
Thanks for the link, I'll check that out.
Hello to both of you, thanks for your help. I did uninstall something,
because when I had it working, when I had the icon by my name, there was
GNOME and GNOME Classic, as well as the default Trisquel. I don't know if
they came in together or if what I downloaded separately when I was
Thanks for the replies. I'll explain a bit, was so upset to say. I had the

great till I clicked on a setting in the universal access, it was the

Thank you. I let my tech guy know about this too.
I had success updating the software, now I'm trying to tweak the browser,
I'll get the shell and session packages later.
My personal files do seem to be gone.
When I tried backing up onto an external HD my computer gave me a message
about not finding a network- I don't understand this, does network reference
mean being online or sharing with other computers? so what's this about? Do I
have to be online to do personal backups? I sure hope not. I
Hello, I have that problem too and asked on my thread. Someone replied with a
link to bypass and get the list, there are direct links on it to each addon.

I almost started a thread like this because I did some tweaking and ran into
problems.
Hi, I checked, I had the wrong folder selected, fixed that and tried backing
up, waited awhile, then saw an icon that looked like it said duplicity, there
was another word with it or a number, darn if I don't write stuff down I
forget. There were about 4 of those, I think the icons looked
I'm glad you chimmed in. Thank you for sharing. When I set up computers, I
enjoy it usually. When my tech guy helped me convert this machine, I was so
happy, I wanted to get more to convert. It was awesome. If I can learn it
well enough I will do it. Though I'll never be a geek but I still
I did post a link someone on the forum gave me that lists the addons with
links, they're on a page here in the forum, it works as if we were on the
real addons page, till that gets fixed, this way works, I tried it and
succeeded.
my external drive, if I remembering right.
Hi, thanks for replying. Awhile ago I did try most of those ideas-the Super_8
command didn't work. I also looked at the cursors I couldn't find anything
for a larger size, didn't think of the Theme option, and I did raise fonts
which helps a little but then they get in the way of other text.
I just went to onioncat's site and got an untrusted connection warning from
IceCat
the plug-in workaround didn't work for me that's why I posted the link I got
from this forum, tho if that works for someone, that's great too. :)
ok, thnx for all the suggestions, I'll read some info and go slow, then I'll
try the vid thing.
SUCCESS! A million thank yous for suggesting the GNOME shell, I found the
option by my name- Oh wow this is so awesome! I really appreciate your help.
My friend will be glad to know about this, I showed him the thread, he sent
me to this site, so I'll be glad to tell him how well my computer
Hello I have a problem, I was doing so well till I messed with some settings
and I couldn't get my computer to work very well so I tried reinstalling the
shell and session but it didn't fix it and accidentally uninstalled something
I shouldn't have- needless to say I am REALLY EMBARRASSED
Thank you for the info. I don't know how long it took, though I did see a
little black bar under the backup and the folder, when it was gone I looked
at the folder I put the backups into.
I really appreciate all the help here, there's no way I could've done this
conversion to Trisquel
Thank you. I noticed when I had Mini, I had 2 others that came in with it.
I think I understand what you're saying. Thanks. :)
I have questions about verfying stuff, the signatures, to be sure I got what
I want from where it's supposed to be from- those things are soo
long it'd take me forever to compare them, is that the only way, no
matter how long it takes to read it?

Hello wonderful techies,
I want to try fluxbox, but before I do anything, I have questions. First, I
want to be sure if it will install beside Trisquel or over it. If I had
installed Trisquel Mini with the sudo apt-get command, would it have replaced
it? Magic Banana asked me if that was
Thank you arielenter. This is a bit overwhelming for me, so many
instructions, and I really appreciate it. I already got it so for now I will
keep it this way.
I checked fluxbox out, didn't like it much, removed it. It's good there's
many choices.
Thanks. :)
I read some of your prefs, noticed some mention of windows and NT. That says
to me it's referring to your computer and OS, am I correct?
Oh, and speaking of javascript, you know Diaspora uses it, I'm sure.
Also, about add-ons for Tor- I read it's not recommended to put more than
what they
yes. I read many of them, but not all. Also I read some info at Tor, and why
they don't recommend plug-ins, which makes sense. It might be a good idea to
compare their prefs with yours. Considering how they set it up, I have to be
sure if it's ok to add any changes to it. From what I read of
OK I'm gonna try Xfce4.
Thank you for the info, I was reading some info at Tor earlier and I'll go to
the link you gave me.
goo also did a sleight of hand with that, they changed the wording in another
part of their contract. When I was still on D I saw something about it, maybe
it was in that article in the link. Beware of anything goo does.
>Also, there is an API with desktop and mobile clients, which is of course
JS-free
I'd like to check that out.
I looked at the jonkman site, it's described as a microblogging service.
In fact I saw an anti-google group, looked tempting to join but I think the
last message is 3 months old; I'll peek at it again sometime.
I need to understand this better so I can do that too, and re-read the
instructions to see if they answer my questions, if not, I'll be back here to
ask.
In Tor it's set to false.
Oh ok. Thanks. I've been reading a few threads here about security, it seems
among the regulars who offer advice, you have answered many of them. I really
appreciate your advice.
If I get it through Synaptic, I hope I'll get the latest version. When I had
it, I don't remember what version
As you so eloquently put it, "Ill have to disagree with the incredibleness,

Well then please explain to us poor deficient users HOW to access and change

you to know I appreciate your honesty.
When I had winblows, I saw the hosts file, but haven't seen that anyplace
else.
I may have to go back to IceCat because their fonts are better for me. A few

I'm so sorry I had to leave. Here's the reasons: #1, they use javascript, I
always have to temporarily allow it. I did post a message about that and the
exact wording. Then I saw something called newrelic, that lurks there, I
could block that and usually the site would run ok, they have some
Thanks for the link. It looks like if I wanna use D, I have to deal with js.
LOL about that ps and pic. :)Comment
I just quit diaspora, so I'll have to find a new place.
oh wow this stuff is so over my head. :(
Backups I know how to do, partitions and swap, no, but I know I won't learn
it by not trying. I will need to have instructions, including what to do it I
screw it up, how to get out of it, start over, whatever, commands for fixing
it, if my machine
thanks for explaining. I remember trying CSS and not getting it. :(
that's what I suspected. :(
OK so while I'm still using this old low memory machine, I will need a few
things, all as secure as possible, that I'd only use one at a time:
a chat program. I saw a message from SuperTramp about hexchat being better
than pidgin for better security and less bloatware. Though I like Pidgin,
I had Ublock Origin on other browsers, but I'm not sure how to use it- but I
did play with it a little though. If I'm using Tor, I know they don't
recommend extra add-ons, so maybe I should go back to IceCat? but .onion is a
Tor thing, right? I'll go read some stuff at Tor's site.
In
in NoScript, if something's temporarily allowed, then the bad stuff can get
in, too, I assume. If I want to not trust something lurking, often I can't
block it out unless I block the main site. So many sites use it, though it
seems very vulnerable.
I don't understand exactly what
how do you use a site like diaspora that has js and won't function without
it?
interactivity- is that its main function? Before js, was there another way to
have interactivity?
thanks for explaining. Now I just have to pick one to try.
how many high-level languages are there? are Bash and Python in that
category? Often I see many programming code names like those, so I imagine
they're part of that whole group.
I didn't find anything called LightDM.
hello Magic Banana, I appreciate your help. I do have a backup program on
here, used it a few days ago.
When I was searching for files today I noticed something that makes me
wonder, that's got me more confused. In the window where the folders are, in
the right hand corner, there's text
Heather, there is a folder .mozilla.
Heather, hi again, thanks for the compliment. I was just curious about the
denial message but I don't think I need to see those folders right now. I
wouldn't make any changes, I'd just read the files, but it's not important at
this time.
The only thing I haven't backed up yet is the
you said, "Boot to the netinstall image. Install the base system. Do NOT
install the Trisquel desktop, Triskel desktop, or Trisquel-mini desktop."
I'm embarrassed to admit I don't know what a netinstall image is.
hi Strypey, wow that is a lot of technical info. I've never looked at
partitions on here so I'll have to do that but I'm not sure how, or how to
set them up. My info is on 2 backup drives each have 500 GB. One thing I
really want to do is back up my browser, with all its settings, it took me
yeah, I'm sorry I didn't make that clear. It would've been interesting to see
what the logs say about it though.
I removed Trisquel Mini so I can try something else.
Thank you for explaining that. Yes I admit I worry too much but I'd rather be
safe than sorry, till I'm sure it's ok to go there. I really miss that place,
so I will go back there soon. Thank you very much for all your help. :)

It looks like I will have to use it. I saw your post and your code for
customizing it. That may be very helpful to me but I need to know where to
put the code after installing the program.
It's great to see another person from Diaspora, it's a wonderful place. I
learned a lot about the FSF from there. :D
> You only need to copy your prefs.js to keep your modifications when you
migrate to another FF browser, there is no need to manually change everything
in about:config every time.
I'm not sure how to do that, though I have an idea. I guess I should get Tor
first, I'd also want to delete
I really like GNOME Shell, I'll use it when I convert my Mac.
Something I noticed about kmag, I had it running and tried to open Synaptic,
but it wouldn't load till I restarted and ran it without kmag running.
Considering my computer's low disk space and RAM, that's why.
I'd like to tweak it like arielenter says, but I need more guidance on it
first.
I was looking at that about a year ago, would love to afford it.
Oh how I miss that, but my machine's memory isn't as much as I thought, as
you may know, you were in my thread about removing Trisquel, you explained
something technical to me there, which I really appreciate.
When I convert my mac, I will be able to use GNOME Shell on it :)
you said, "You could even go "half-full cli" and find a cli replacement for
many of your GUI applications." I'd like to understand more about that. You
also mentioned Xfce. I'd like to try it, but I should remove something first.
Since my Trisquel is still functional without the GNOME shell,
I tried to get it from the Terminal, that's how I saw the warnig. I know how
to get it the way you explained it, if I remember right, I set it up that way
awhile ago. Why does Terminal send that warning?
Hi, I'm on my other machine, the memtest is still going on my old one, but at
the bottom of the screen a message says it's complete, there's no errors, yet
at the top, it's still testing. Is it starting over? I don't know when the
message of being complete came up, sometime this morning.
Hmmm, considering my RAM problem, I really need to do some homework on all of
this.
OK, thanks for the info.
OK and thanks. I started the self test, this will take awhile it looks like.
It seems to me a good idea to look at the specs for these programs everyone's
suggesting, to see how much memory they require before installing, Due to the
lack of RAM, then I can decide which OS I want. I'd like to try the others to
see if I like than better than Trisquel Mini, for my poor
A message from Terminal has a warning saying The following packages cannot be
authenticated! memtest86+
Disk Self Test is complete, Disk is OK. Now onto the next thing. I'm in
Trisquel there so I can do the next suggestion. Report coming soon. Thanks.
:)
Wow Strypey, you have thought this out well with the levels. That and the
usability rating idea make a lot of sense to me. It would be nice if you
could present these suggestions to the FSF for consideration.
What is a blob? It'd be interesting to know how these things got their name.
I got an error message, (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented. (???)
unknown.
The (EE) is in red.
if there are 2, I wonder which one is the official one. Maybe I saw one of
them awhile ago; it didn't seem very active.
You're probably right. :(

to those she's accusing. When someone from any group does something, it

When the screen scrambled, it was when I had GNOME Shell, which has been
removed as the likely suspect, a month ago, but I'm sure an old log would say
something about the incident.
I hope it'd be ok to use the terminal I like from Accessories.
You have been very kind and patient with me, it
only half? I thought it was more.:(
Hi arielenter, thank you for your suggestion. yes, before I got the GNOME
Shell, I tried that and I had some trouble using it but I appreciate your
idea. I may have to use it again if there's nothing else.Too bad I don't have
as much memory as I did, the GNOME Shell was wonderful for
you know I've been consistent on my rants about goo. :)
Wow I am so glad to see friends from D. You've been so helpful to me, thank
you so much. I wish I had your tech skills. Thanks for all you share. :D
Something I noticed about kmag, I had it running and tried to open Synaptic,
but it wouldn't load till I restarted and ran it without kmag running.
Considering my computer's low disk space and RAM, that's why.
I'd like to tweak it like arielenter says, but I need more guidance on it

I'm never using the "real terminal" again because I couldn't get out of it. I
tried and had to force my machine to restart. Nope, not doing that again. I
looked up commands, strange, I could get out of the other Terminals. So I
hope I can continue using the one I found that I like, though
It didn't explain anything. I went to the documents, found some logs, have to
find which one might show any info about the screen prob.
Wow that is noticeable difference. I see I have some studying to do, so I can
put together something that my poor old machine can handle, till I can
convert my Mac. I'll look at all the suggestions again and compare them. You
have all been so wonderful. :D
please tell us what that is?
LOL! I like Terminal, it's not as scary as it was when I first tried it so
long ago. :)
Hi Mangy Dog, Thanks for explaining! This is fascinating stuff! I wish we
could remove all those proprietary blobs and replace every one with something
Free. I wish I was a programmer. Many years ago someone tried explaining what
binary is. He made it seem so simple. This stuff is so over my
