Re: [TV orNotTV] This week's J! test

2016-10-15 Thread 'Dave Sikula' via TVorNotTV
Pidge's take on Alex has changed.

Before the show aired, her memory of it was that she tanked early and the
eventual winner ran away with it. She didn't even mention the Nerdcore
thing (she claimed to have few memories of it).

Once it aired, her impressions changed, especially when she saw how she'd
done much better than she remembered.

Seeing it, her initial reaction was that there wasn't much there; she's
more lately characterized Alex as a dick. (My own impression on the show
was that he seemed to like me, but when asked a question he hadn't heard a
million times or was something he was interested in, he was quite charming.
When asked about something he's been asked about a million time, he was,
indeed, a dick.)

It happens with college football too: Today, ABC had to start the
Nebraska-Indiana game on ESPN2 and the North Carolina-Miami game on ESPNU
because the NC State-Clemson game went into OT.
With the NFL, the networks are required to show the home team's game in its
entirety. However they can stick with a late-running game elsewhere- and
i've seen both FOX and CBS give a overtime finish priority over the start
of the second game- CBS gave Cleveland at Miami priority a few weeks ago
over the start of Pittsburgh at Philadelphia, and FOX did the same thing
with the Oakland at New Orleans game in the first week over New York Giants
at Dallas.

I downloaded and watched the pilot. It's tough to review a sitcom pilot
because they have to introduce all the main characters and define their
relationships while setting a tone for the series. I thought they did a
decent job of covering all that business. I also think they succeeded in
the setup: having the main family be Korean and making them comprehensible
and sympathetic to a diverse (and mostly white) audience.

I had one big problem with a character and that was the manager of the car
rental agency. Maybe she is there to be a comic foil or maybe her character
will evolve in later episodes but her basic insecurity and lack of
authority as a manager irritated me.

The other issue I had might relate to your daughter's reaction. I'm 56 and
when in conversation with educated young adults it becomes obvious that
their viewpoints are based on different core assumptions than mine are.
Just as they are digital natives, they are also diversity natives and they
have a comfort level with gender and orientation diversity as well as
immigrants from other cultures. I think the show tried to base its comedy
on tensions built around the gay community and the Asian immigrant
experience and those tensions are absent to the younger generation. So the
jokes don't have a strong payoff.

Nothing can replace Big Pharma in their scale and amount of advertising. If
the FTC or public pressure were to cause Big Pharma to cut back on their ad
buys network television would be in big trouble and so their media
companies will always be on Pharma' side.

Re: [TV orNotTV] In hosting news

2016-10-15 Thread Mark Jeffries
It has to depend on whether the station feels they have to (like if they
promised an underwriter that they would get a plug on every break), but I
believe WBEZ in Chicago has never used the break, partially because they're
on automation on Saturdays at 5 p.m. and the automation can't leave the
network on in the background, which is about the only way doing the
Powdermilk break would work. I can't imagine rolling a promo that's two
seconds longer than what the screen says it is (that's label on the cart in
the old days of radio before the AudioVault) and then potting back up on
"...tried 'em, Powdermilk!", followed by, hopefully with the mike turned
off, the board-op/announcer saying "oh shit." If it's stuff they have to
run like underwriting announcements or it's a pledge drive, I would
understand, but if it was an announcer just doing a "coming up tonight here
on public radio..." reading of the schedule for the rest of the night, I'd
be pissed. I'd be curious how many stations that run "PHC" do take
advantage of the hidden station break.

Still, I don't expect to be in any type of "hot water"... Dad's sitch is

Re: [TV orNotTV] In hosting news

2016-10-15 Thread Diner
WHYY Philadelphia has never had an announcer cut in during the Powdermilk
theme - they've always played the song all the way through, going back to
when they first started carrying PHC over thirty years ago.
The first time I listened on WNYC and heard an announcer talk over the
music, I was really shocked at how crass it sounded. I had no idea at the
time that it was normal behavior.

One thing I've been thinking about while watching the baseball playoffs is the
fact that there used to be no TV advertising for hard liquor -- not due to FTC
or other national government regulations, but because the
manufacturers/distributors had agreed to it through their industry association.
That voluntary ban ended 20 years ago:
http://www.nytimes.com/1996/11/08/business/liquor-industry-ends-its-ad-ban-in-broadcasting.html

(The broadcast networks still don't accept hard liquor ads -- although some of
their affiliates do -- but the baseball playoffs, being on cable up until the
World Series, are rife with liquor commercials, mostly bourbon.)
