[TV orNotTV] The Duke leaves "Miss Scarlet and the Duke"

2024-03-01 Thread Diner
Well, this is a disappointing turn of events on one of the few series I
actually watch.

Miss Scarlet on her own can be a little hard to take, but what has made the
show work was the way she interacted with everyone else. But first Moses
disappeared at the beginning of season 4 (I think they only mentioned his
absence in one line - shades of Susan Saint James' departure from "McMillan
and Wife"). Then season 4 ended with Nash in jail and Eliza back to working
on her own. And now she will have no Duke for her to play off of.

So now Eliza has no romantic partner, no work partner, and no easy way to
investigate cases unless they introduce a whole new supporting cast...
what's the point of continuing the series?

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: 'After Midnight' Finally Premiering--POINTS!

2024-01-25 Thread Diner
I've watched three episodes so far: episode 1 (because it was the
premiere), episode 2 (for Paul F. Tompkins), and episode 4 (for Milana
Vayntrub).

And it was a real ordeal. I got tired of the hyped-up energy about 15
minutes into the premiere, and I'm not sure how I made it through 3
episodes. Tompkins and Vayntrub, as much as I like them, didn't do
themselves or the show any favors.

Tomlinson wasn't horrible, and I'm sure she'll get better. But she mostly
made me think "What would Hollywood Squares have been like if Peter
Marshall did a big fake laugh for every single joke?" She's likable, but
she's working really, really hard to be likable, and the effort is obvious.

There were two moments on episode 4 that stood out for me. One was a joke
Tomlinson made along the lines of "We're only here because CBS wants young
eyeballs." Which is true, of course, and reminded me that maybe the reason
I'm not crazy about this show is that this show isn't made for me.

The other was the best moment on the episode: when comic Kelsey Cook told a
story about how she and Tomlinson once attended a male strip show together
and Tomlinson got freaked out. And she was clearly uncomfortable hearing
the story again. It was the best part of the show, but it had nothing to do
with the game - it was basically a talk show story that would have worked
equally well on any of the other late night network shows. It was the one
moment when Tomlinson's true personality broke through. I hope there are
more moments like this.

As Dave said, if I watch again, it'll be because of the guests. And as Tom
said, I'll check back in a few months to see how it evolves.

I think that's why you have to edit ruthlessly on this type of show. I
don't think it's a problem that in the final show, most jokes do, rather
than don't work. But you should lose a good 50% of what you record. And
 I'm
just not sure you can do that successfully if you're recording only a few
hours before broadcast. Of course, if you're smart, you can lean into
things that don't work. Reference the fact that nobody in the audience
 gets
 it.

Re: [TV orNotTV] CW unveils new branding

2024-01-16 Thread Diner
My DVR was set to record new episodes of "Whose Line," but when the current
run of episodes started in November, I noticed it wasn't working anymore. I
soon discovered that was because CW had changed its affiliation from WPSG

[TV orNotTV] Sinclair shuts down news production in Tulsa

WTUL Channel 8, the Sinclair-owned ABC affiliate in Tulsa, is moving its
news production 100 miles away to Oklahoma City, where Sinclair owns two

have reporters in Tulsa but that all the anchoring and news production will
be done out of Oklahoma City, and that Tulsa will be more like a "bureau."

at
https://tulsaworld.com/news/local/sinclair-broadcast-group/article_d4298c30-7f44-11ee-a9a5-4747bab26bfa.html

For reference, Tulsa is the 47th most populous city in the country, and the
station - which moved its license from Muskogee to Tulsa in 1957 - is a
longtime part of the city's cultural identity. And if this can happen in a
city with a population larger than New Orleans, Cleveland or Pittsburgh,
who knows what's next.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Low World Series TV ratings in 2023 continue 7-year downward trend

Last week I was listening to "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me," and one of the

A good joke, but for a lot of people I think it rings true.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Canadian TV Show Claims Well-Known Singer Is Not Indigenous

2023-10-30 Thread Diner
Can't comment on the episode, but I read the article last week after seeing
a Twitter link to it, and it seems remarkably well-researched.

https://www.cbc.ca/newsinteractives/features/buffy-sainte-marie

I don't have a vested interest in the story either, although I did see the
documentary about her on American Masters last year. I thought it was
well-done, although I still don't think she's a major artist.

Re: [TV orNotTV] And here's your full S32 DWTS cast...

2023-09-13 Thread Diner
Having never watched more than a few minutes of DWTS at a time, my first
reaction upon seeing this list was "Is Mira Sorvino the first Oscar-winning
performer to compete on this show?"

And after checking Wikipedia, I can report that the answer is no. Tatum
O'Neal (9th place in season 2) and Cloris Leachman (7th place in season 7)
were also contestants. (Did I miss anybody?)

However, Ms. Sorvino is, I believe, the first DWTS contestant to have won
an Oscar for a film not directed by Peter Bogdanovich.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: 'Price' First Out of TV City Before Renovation

2023-06-01 Thread Diner
According to Randy West on Facebook (random quotes):

The Price is Right has moved maybe 75% of their massive number of games,
set pieces, props and prizes from TV City. The big wheel has yet to make
the trip down towards Glendale.
You'd be surprised to know how many storage areas, buildings and
underground holding areas they had. If the new owners of the studio were
charging rental for all of those thousands of square feet, I'd have left
even sooner!
More to come. Taping at the new studio starts August 2nd and, oh yes, you
will want to watch the first shows of the new season in September!

It's called Haven Studios and is near the L.A. - Glendale border. Price
will share a massive studio with Let's Make a Deal. The space was very
recently transformed from an industrial building, and this summer's Press
Your Luck already taped there.

Even after rehearsals, CBS Electronics used to be down the hall with the
last guy who built the electronics for those games. There'll be one tech in
the new studio, but he doesn't have the experience with the older games, nor
will he have lots of spare parts on site. It's a 30 minute drive... tick,
tock, tick, tock, tick, tock...

[TV orNotTV] In "I didn't expect THAT to be released on DVD" news...

2023-05-22 Thread Diner
The 2012-2013 Matthew Perry sitcom "Go On" will be released on DVD May 23
from Mill Creek Entertainment.

https://www.mediaplaynews.com/complete-series-of-tv-comedy-go-on-due-on-dvd-may-23-from-mill-creek/

I actually watched every episode of this show (we Laura Benanti fans will
put up with a lot of crap), and when I read the article, I realized that I
had completely forgotten that Tyler James Williams was a regular on this
show. (Though I did remember that Jack Carter made one of his last
appearances on it.)

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: SWAT be gone

2023-05-09 Thread Diner
Meanwhile, both *East New York* and *True Lies* were canceled after one
season.

Streaming rights were an issue for *East New York* - CBS wanted them beyond
the current season, Warner Bros. wouldn't give them up. And since *SWAT*
and *ENY* were basically competing for the same slot, *SWAT's *return came
at *ENY's* expense.

It was a mercy killing.

After Leslie Jordan's death I decided to watch the next episode because I

It was horrifically bad. A bunch of talented actors, but not one line was
even remotely funny.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Comisar Collection Auction

2023-05-04 Thread Diner
It's amazing, isn't it? I'd listened to Comisar's interview on The Carson
Podcast a while back, so I knew he had quite a collection, but I hadn't
realized it was this good and this diverse. I mean, it's one thing to have
Johnny's desk, but to have Doc's music stand too? And a set of doors from
The Price Is Right, and a set of doors from Jeopardy? And Bob Crane's
leather jacket from Hogan's Heroes, and Linda Kaye Henning's wedding dress
from Petticoat Junction, and Jim Rockford's business cards? And the
orchestrations from when Steve Martin sang "King Tut" on SNL, orchestrated
by... Tommy Newsom?? And all that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Though probably my favorite item is "A Group of Prop Human Remains Evidence
from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."

[TV orNotTV] Re: Quickie Review: Lingo w/RuPaul

2023-04-26 Thread Diner
Ralph Andrews Productions has just posted a video recorded at some time in
the late '70s: a run-through in the NBC offices for a format called "The
Word Game."
If you've seen "Lingo," the gameplay might look familiar to you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYsgbMuUyCE

Andrews was the creator and producer for the original 1987-88 run of
"Lingo," and he took over as host after firing the original host,
presidential progeny Michael Reagan.

Speaking of Ralph Andrews Productions, they've also posted a
not-seen-in-47-years episode of "Celebrity Sweepstakes," hosted by "Word
Game" emcee Jim McKrell.
Thanks to Game Show Author Adam Nedeff on Facebook for the links.

I was in college when Miami Vice was the hottest show on TV, and I was

My college friend Phyllis Stark, who went on to become one of the top

Re: [TV orNotTV] I guess Bill Kurtis is hanging it up

2023-03-15 Thread Diner
The new brand and focus seems rather more downscale and less curated than
their current schedule... although I suppose one man's "Petticoat Junction"
is another man's "Full House."

Overall, it's not going to have a huge impact on their schedule, since most
of Decades was comedy anyway... but sadly, this does mean the end of
nightly "Dick Cavett Show" reruns. (Just last night I caught part of a 1971
pre-bout showdown between Ali and Frazier, which was truly a glimpse at a
bygone era.)

I believe the only dramas on their regular schedule were "Dark Shadows" and
"The Millionaire," both buried in the 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. hours. But they did
often feature dramas on their weekend binges - "77 Sunset Strip" this
coming weekend (including the complete "noir" final season) and "The Mod
Squad" the weekend after that, just before the rebranding begins. I wonder
how often we'll see dramas like that on subchannels in the future.

Re: [TV orNotTV] How to Fix the Oscars (But It Won't Happen)

2023-03-08 Thread Diner
I understand the desire to move the lifetime achievement awards back to the
broadcast.
However, it's my understanding that the separate Governors Awards ceremony
is popular with Academy members, because it allows lifetime achievement
winners to give long speeches befitting their status without having to deal
with a TV-imposed 45-second time limit. At the most recent ceremony, two of
the winners, directors Peter Weir and Euzhan Palcy, spoke for 15 minutes
apiece; Michael J. Fox spoke for 13 minutes; and Diane Warren spoke for 6
minutes. No way they're going to get rid of that.
Also, it's held at a dinner which allows stars to shmooze with their fellow
stars. They just love that stuff.

Re: [TV orNotTV] SuperBowl comments

2023-02-13 Thread Diner
My favorite commercial was the "triangle player" commercial for Doritos.
The "triangle player of the year" reveal at the end really made me laugh
hard. I liked the Dunkin' commercial too.

I wasn't crazy about Rihanna - the dancing and the spectacle were good, but
the music did nothing for me. And as Darlene Love wrote, "Hmm … I have
mixed feelings about Rihanna’s halftime performance… was expecting a high
energy performance like Beyoncé
,

Bruno Mars
,

Janet Jackson and JLo."
Chris Stapleton was superb. Sheryl Lee Ralph was good but the lip syncing
took me out of it.

As for the game - as a Philadelphian and a big Eagles fan, I have to admit
that the holding call was not the deciding factor. The biggest factor in
the loss was that the Eagles' defense, one of the best in the league, made
almost no big plays to stop the Chiefs. They got outplayed/outcoached in
that area, and when the Chiefs started making big plays in the second half
the Eagles had no way to stop them. The second biggest factor was the
slippery field, which the Chiefs were prepared for (the Chiefs equipment
manager had been "in constant communication with the groundscrew all week
and knew the Chiefs would need the seven-stud cleats for the field Sunday,"
said CBS Sports) and the Eagles were not (Hurts changed cleats at one
point because he hadn't expected the field conditions).
Overall, though, a pretty good game. Hard to see my team lose, but I can't
deny that the Chiefs played better.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: (formerly TV) Jon Batiste drops track from "Marlowe" soundtrack

2023-02-11 Thread Diner
Speaking of hard-boiled detectives, last week on the "Movies!" channel I
saw the 1948 movie "I Love Trouble," written by Roy Huggins and based on
one of his novels. It's a very tough and gripping noir mystery, very much
in the Chandler mode, and I highly recommend it.
Franchot Tone plays the lead, detective Stuart Bailey. Huggins reused the
Bailey character on his later TV series "77 Sunset Strip," with Efrem
Zimbalist Jr. as Bailey, but Tone's version is much more edgy and
dangerous, with none of the lightness of the series. If you like Chandler,
I think you'll enjoy it.

Re: [TV orNotTV] CBS reviewing captioning policy after Bad Bunny issue at Grammys

2023-02-11 Thread Diner
I usually watch music performances with the captions turned on so that I
can read the lyrics, and I've noticed that most late night shows rarely, if
ever, use captioning for foreign language musical guests - they usually use
a standard "singing in foreign language" message.
The one program I watch that takes care to use Spanish captions is "Austin
City Limits," which has had one or two Spanish language acts per season for
the last few years.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Quickie Review: Lingo w/RuPaul

2023-02-04 Thread Diner
Pretty spot on.

One other thing that annoys me is how they prime the audience to applaud
over and over for no reason. Ru asks a contestant where he's from, the
contestant replies "Little Rock, Arkansas," and it gets a HUGE round of
applause. Then that contestant's partner gets asked the same question, and
he mentions a town in Arkansas that nobody outside Arkansas has ever heard
of, and that gets just as big a round of applause. Oh, and did I mention
this show tapes in Manchester, England? Why are people in England giving
huge rounds of applause for Podunk, Arkansas? Who knows.

I actually watched some episodes of the Bill Engvall version a few months
ago on Pluto TV - basically to help me fall asleep! It was an okay way to
spend a half hour, but I remember thinking at the time that the scoring was
all screwed up and that the bingo element complicated the game
unnecessarily. I actually thought "instead of playing to win numbers on a
bingo board, they should play for money, but have the money decrease as
they go down the board." And whaddaya know, that's exactly what this new
version does. Except even with the improvements to the gameplay, it's still
not remotely exciting. (Hey, neither is "Wheel of Fortune," so what do I
know?) But it's a fairly pleasant (if annoyingly repetitive) way to spend
an hour.

One more game show-related thing: the "Superfans" edition of "The Price is
Right at Night" that aired this week was a wonderful celebration of the
show and why the fans love it, and it seemed, as Adam Nedeff wrote, a love
letter to the fans. Catch it on cbs.com.

[TV orNotTV] The Return of Scottish Conan Guy

2023-01-17 Thread Diner

Sony Pictures Television
 is plotting a return
to the syndicated talk show arena with a half-hour late-night strip hosted
by Craig Ferguson. Produced by Whisper North, a division of SPT-backed
production company Whisper, *Channel Surf with Craig Ferguson

in the UK earlier this month and is being taken out to potential buyers by
distributor SPT this week in Los Angeles.

*Channel Surf with Craig Ferguson*, which also marks the comedian’s return
to late-night since leaving CBS’ *The Late Late Show* in 2014, will feature
Ferguson and his friends as they “review the shocking, surprising and
hilarious moments of the week’s shows.”

[TV orNotTV] Re: Next Tony Awards trying a different (but still NY) theater

2022-12-14 Thread Diner
Normally shows do a 3pm matinee on Tony day, then dash over a few blocks to
Radio City (or the Winter Garden or whatever) to perform on the Tonys.
Now, with the awards show moved over 7.5 miles north, and with actors
having to fight New York traffic to get there on time (and hit the red
carpet beforehand), my guess is that many shows will be cancelling their
Sunday matinees that week.

On the plus side, it's a gorgeous theater that will probably look great on
TV.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Jim Gardner is retiring

2022-12-06 Thread Diner
Brian Taff, currently co-anchor on 6ABC's noon and 4 pm newscasts, will
take over the 6 pm newscast when ol' Jimbo retires.
Gardner's last newscast will be on Wednesday, December 23.
Taff, who is in his early 40s, has been with the station since 2009.
Rick Williams will continue to anchor the 11 pm newscast, as well as
co-anchoring at 5 pm.
https://www.inquirer.com/entertainment/tv/6abc-jim-gardner-action-news-brian-taff-replacement-20221206.html

Interesting that the station is keeping a solo anchor on both its 6 and 11
pm broadcasts - definitely a rarity these days - but splitting Gardner's
old job between two anchors.

BTW, check out this adorable video of Gardner and "Abbott Elementary" star
Quinta Brunson finally meeting - and gushing over each other - at this
year's Philadelphia Thanksgiving Parade.

[TV orNotTV] Re: RIP: Meanwhile, watermelons rejoice

2022-11-12 Thread Diner
Great story.

I'll always remember watching Leno in early 1992 (he was still filling in
for Johnny) when he did a joke that went something like this:
"As a goodwill effort, Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko will be doing
a tour of the United States next month. That's the good news. The bad news:
he's opening for Gallagher."

I don't think it got a big laugh from the audience, but I remember Jay
reacting to the people to his left and right - the joke got a lot of
laughter from Doc and the band, plus the people offstage.
So even at that point, it was obvious to me that people in show business
hated Gallagher.

Rob Martinez just posted this story on the Gilbert Gottfried Podcast
Facebook group:

The date: early 1990s. The place: A Suncoast Motion Picture Company store
in the Midwest.
My best friend was working behind the counter waiting on a customer with
two other people standing nearby to check out. Other employees are helping
other customers in the store - it's a Saturday, it's crowded.
At this moment, Gallagher walks into the store as if he owned the place. He
looks around waiting to be recognized. Some people look up and recognize
him but by the comedian's body language, it's not the reception he wanted.
My friend looks up and sees him but continues to ring up his waiting
customers.
After one minute, Gallagher raises his voice and yells "DOES ANYONE HERE
KNOW WHO I AM?" The entire store stopped and looked at the entrance.
My friend looks up and simply says "Yes, I know you. You're fourth in line
and when I'm done here, I'll gladly help you."
Gallagher did a complete double-take, turned around, and left the store.

Another CW show bites the dust.
And when it dies, so dies any reason for me to watch the network again.

Yes, except that I doubt we're going to see Emma Watson or Aisha Tyler

[TV orNotTV] Al Primo, 87, creator of the "Eyewitness News" format

2022-09-30 Thread Diner
https://www.inquirer.com/news/al-primo-obituary-20220930.html
Al Primo, creator of ‘Eyewitness News,’ has died at 87
He modernized TV news and diversified newsrooms across the U.S.
by Layla A. Jones
Published Sep 30, 2022

Albert “Al” Primo, 87, who transformed television news when he created the
now-ubiquitous Eyewitness News format, died Thursday, Sept. 29, at his home
in Old Greenwich, Conn.

Mr. Primo launched Eyewitness News at Philadelphia’s KYW-TV, now CBS3, in
1965 as the station’s 30-year-old news director. Mr. Primo’s makeover of
the TV news format ushered in an era of record viewership and profits for
the medium and changed America’s relationship with local news.

Diverting from the static, newsreader format of the day, which featured a
sole, middle-aged white anchor, Mr. Primo created a beat system and hired
women and people of color for the first time.

He paired men and women to anchor together, creating the first “family” of
local news people.

“They said ‘it was not journalism’ and ‘he’s using show-business
techniques,’ ” Mr. Primo told The Inquirer earlier this year of critics who
challenged his strategy. “And of course, I said, ‘Yes, that’s right. This
is television, so we use lights, camera, action — that’s what we do.’ But
we do the news, too.”

Integral to Mr. Primo’s vision were newsrooms that looked more like the
communities they were covering. Soon after taking a top role at KYW-TV, he
began meeting with civic leaders in Philadelphia.

“What it did for me was really highlight the fact that there was no
minority representation on the station,” Mr. Primo said. “And so I began to
look around for someone who was qualified to join the team.”

The young newsman then recruited Trudy Haynes, the first African American
television reporter in the city. Haynes died in June at 95.

“It took a lot of courage to take a radio reporter from Detroit and put her
in Philadelphia, the fourth biggest city in America,” Mr. Primo recently
told The Inquirer of hiring Haynes.

>From mailroom to mogul
With his success in Philadelphia pushing him into the national spotlight,
Mr. Primo moved to New York City’s WABC-TV in 1968, and unrolled the
Eyewitness News format there.

In New York, he gave big names like Geraldo Rivera their start.

Building on his successful approach to television news, Mr. Primo innovated
again when he became a news consultant, inventing an entirely new media
profession and spreading the Eyewitness News format to more than 100
stations across the world.

His brainchild emphasized action on video, the perception that reporters
were always on the scene when news was breaking, the familial coanchor
arrangement with quippy banter, music, and graphics, and a more narrative
storytelling approach. These elements still define local TV news stations
across the country and some national TV news programs.

Later in life, he created Teen Kids News, a children’s television program
that still airs and publishes online today.

A Pittsburgh native, Mr. Primo began his journey to media mogul in the
mailroom of a local television station and worked his way up to assistant
news director. Frustrated by lack of promotion to news director, he left
first for Cleveland before coming to Philadelphia.

Once he arrived, pioneering female broadcaster Marciarose Shestack helped
Mr. Primo launch Eyewitness News.

”What I can tell you about Al is he really revolutionized the news
business,” she said, noting that his death came as a “shock.” Shestack
emphasized Mr. Primo’s drive to hire people of color like Haynes and
prominent newspaper columnist Claude Lewis, who was Black. “He was a very
dynamic personality,” she said. “He was forward looking.”

“We’re so proud of my dad and the advancements he did for women and
minorities and we’re so heartbroken. I knew him as dad and he was a great
one,” daughter Juliet Primo told The Inquirer.

In addition to Juliet, Mr. Primo is survived by another daughter, Valeri
Primo Lack, and other relatives.

Services are tentatively planned for Saturday, Oct. 8, at First
Congregational Church in Old Greenwich, Conn.

Interesting to see this now. I'm catching up on the last season of "L:
Organized Crime" - I have 4 or 5 episodes to finish before it expires from
Hulu in a week - and I am finding the story arc about police corruption and
the officers' Mafia-like code of silence surprisingly critical of the
police. (Though the criticism is directed at rank-and-file officers, not
the police administration.) Not to mention the recurring plotline about
Sergeant Bell's wife suing the NYPD for police brutality.

[TV orNotTV] Re: He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named to Host 'Wheel Live'

Mark L. Walberg left "Antiques Roadshow" in 2019. Since 2020 the show has
not had an onscreen host. Announcer Coral Peña has filled Walberg's duties,
though she is billed as narrator rather than host.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: "The Worst Series Finales of All Time"

2022-08-30 Thread Diner
The critiques of Northern Exposure and Scrubs are criticisms of the final
seasons, not the final episodes, and thus should not be on the list.
As for the others, well, my reaction to the Gilmore Girls finale was WAY
different.
And as one of the commenters noted, the final Castle was one of those "what
the hell just happened?" moments.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: "Password": Rapid review

2022-08-11 Thread Diner
I just saw episode 2, and there's a feature that didn't turn up in episode
1 called the Redemption Round.
If a contestant doesn't get all ten words in the bonus round, they then
have a chance to double their winnings on one word. The contestant gives
one clue, then puts on noise-canceling headphones and turns around. The two
celebs then have 30 seconds to decide between them what their guess is. The
contestant is then asked what the password is, and if the celebs were
correct, the prize is doubled.
In this case, the contestant didn't win the $25K grand prize, but he was
able to double his winnings from $8K to $16K.
It's way too drawn-out, but it's not a bad feature.

Episode 2 also featured Fallon accidentally blurting out the password at
one point... just like his "Tonight" predecessor Jack Paar did repeatedly.

[TV orNotTV] Re: US Would I Lie to You

2022-07-11 Thread Diner
I've seen all 13 episodes, but had not been exposed to the foreign versions.

My overall verdict: it's okay. It's not a horrible way to spend a half
hour, but it doesn't really grab me as much as I would like.

My biggest problem with it is that it's edited within an inch of its life,
and it feels so rushed that I'm very conscious that a lot is missing.
That's a big difference between this show and Whose Line - they're both
heavily edited, but on Whose Line I never feel as if I'm missing anything.
On Would I Lie to You, the first round has the four guest panelists telling
a story, but because of time and commercial limitations they usually only
fit in three of the stories. (Sometimes excerpts of the fourth story are
shown during the closing credits.) This week Krysta Rodriguez's story was
cut, and as a result she barely registered as a presence.
And then at the end of the first act Aasif says "Sabrina's team is in the
lead" and I think "Well, of course they are, we only saw 3 of the 4
stories." (And what are they leading by? 3 to 1? 4 to 0?)

I agree with your comments about Richard Kind, Michael Ian Black and Allie
Wentworth. All excellent panelists.
And I do like their use of New York stage actors like Dylan Baker, Becky
Ann Baker, Laura Benanti and Nikki M. James - it reminds me of how
Goodson-Todman used stage actors so extensively on their New York panel

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: CBS Fall Annotated

2022-05-18 Thread Diner
I still watch L (original flavor) and L: Organized Crime. The current
L cast is really good, and the energy they're bringing to their roles has
really refreshed the franchise. Anthony Anderson's Detective Bernard was
rather nondescript on the old series, but now he's playing the role with a
take-no-crap attitude, seething at every little micro-aggression from the
witnesses he interviews, and even from his unenlightened partner (Jeffrey
Donovan).
As for Organized Crime, I still like it, though it doesn't work as well
without a love-to-hate villain like Dylan McDermott. (Turning McDermott
from a mob boss into a Bond villain out to destroy the city was way over
the top.) And I get a kick out of Ainsley Seiger as Sloot.
I watched "FBI" a few times when a friend guest starred, but it was really
a chore. The formula already seemed worn out the first time I watched.

[TV orNotTV] Re: NotTV: So long, iPods

2022-05-16 Thread Diner
I concur with all your points.
I still have two iPod Nanos that I use every day. One contains upbeat
comedy podcasts that I listen to when I wake up, plus music that I listen
to when I do my daily exercises. The other one contains more
serious/longform podcasts that I listen to while doing my daily lunchtime
walk. (I used to keep that one at the office, but since the pandemic
started I work at home 95% of the time. So I ended up keeping two iPods at
home, but that works out fine.)
One other thing I like about the Nano (in addition to Paul's points) is
that the final version of the Nano (7th generation) has a power button on
the side that allows me to easily turn it on and off with just a click of
my left thumb, if I hold the iPod in my left hand. I tried upgrading to an
iPod Touch, but the lack of that power button caused serious problems - I
could no longer toggle the music off and on when I was crossing a street or
dealing with loud noises (lawn mowers, overhead planes). I disabled the
passcode to make it a bit quicker to turn it back on, but it wasn't a great
solution.
Another problem I had with the Touch was its inability to keep a charge. I
would charge it for hours, unplug it, and almost immediately it would lose
most of its charge. Even though I wasn't running anything. The solutions I
found online didn't work. Never did figure that out.
The only thing I don't like about the Nano is that my 2013 Honda doesn't
recognize its operating system, so I can't play it there (except through
the auxiliary jack, which is not convenient when driving). But since the
pandemic I don't do as much driving, so that's not a big issue. These days
in the car I listen to music on CDs, or I put podcasts on a thumb drive and
play them through the USB connection.
Paul, what non-iPod do you use for portable music?

[TV orNotTV] Re: James Olson, RIP

2022-05-10 Thread Diner
He was James *Olson*, not Olsen.

Also remembered as Father, opposite Mary Steenburgen as Mother, in Milos
Forman's "Ragtime" (1981).

[TV orNotTV] My thoughts on "Dalgliesh"

2022-05-07 Thread Diner
Xfinity is having a "free movie" week, which allowed me to check out Acorn
TV and the first season of "Dalgliesh."

I was familiar with P.D. James' character of Detective Chief Inspector Adam
Dalgliesh from the Roy Marsden-starring adaptations that ran on PBS'
"Mystery!" in the 80s and 90s. I also saw one of the later adaptations
starring Martin Shaw. (I think the only James novel I've read was "An
Unsuitable Job for a Woman," which did not feature the Dalgliesh character.
And I've also listened to a few of the BBC Radio dramatizations.)

The Marsden series were told in a leisurely fashion - my recollection is
that each novel was dramatized over six one-hour episodes. This time
around, each novel gets two 45-minute episodes (the season is three stories
told over six episodes). But the stories move briskly, and you won't feel
like you're missing anything. And the production values are much higher
this time around - the Marsden series were shot on videotape.

The cases are complex and challenging - you have to pay close attention,
and not just because of the British and Irish accents. (The show is set in
England but filmed in Northern Ireland.) And Bertie Carvel's subtle,
restrained take on the title role is perfectly suited to the material.

Two things struck me while watching this that I didn't remember from the
last time around. One is that Dalgliesh is an example of the "Crusading
Widower" trope - when we meet him, his wife and child have died recently of
unstated causes. But since the character first appeared in print in 1962,
this could be seen as an early example. And the stories do not go overboard
in using it to establish pathos - we don't find out about the son's death
until about halfway through the second story, for example.

Another is the subtle way that this version of Dalgliesh strikes blows for
feminism, and against racism, as the series progresses. The series is set
in 1975 (which explains the sideburns, smoking, and lack of seat belts). In
the first story, Dalgliesh's assistant Charles Masterson (Jeremy Irvine) is
a jerk who seems more concerned with screwing a nubile suspect than finding
the killer. The second story, "The Black Tower," is set in the Dorset
countryside, and Dalgliesh gets help from highly competent local sergeant
Kate Miskin (Carlyss Peer). By the third story, "A Taste for Death," Miskin
has moved to London and joined the team - and her solid professionalism
leads to Masterson's jealousy, sexism and racism bubbling to the surface.
Casting a POC as Miskin for the first time really pays off, and moving the
stories to the 1970s places Masterson's behavior in a different context
than it would have if it were set in the present day. These are smart moves
by the producers, and things you'd miss if you stop watching before the
season ends.

Anyway, it's an absorbing, entertaining series that is worth watching
closely.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Joel returns to MST3K for 13th season

2022-05-07 Thread Diner
I'm subscribing to the new season, though I haven't had a chance to watch
it yet (I started watching "Santo" last night but realized about 10 minutes
in that I was too tired to devote myself to it). I'll catch up eventually.

I had the same experience as you with the live tours - I missed the last
one, but I saw the previous one and was very impressed with Emily (although
at that point she was mostly a sidekick to Joel).

There's also been discontent within the ranks about the limited number of

Re: [TV orNotTV] RIP Gilbert Gottfried

2022-04-13 Thread Diner
He was the host of my favorite podcast - a show I've been listening to
obsessively since I discovered it at least five years ago.
Listen to his recent interviews with Michael Feinstein, Frank Ferrante
(they did dueling Grouchos), or Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss. Or one
of his many Christmas episodes with Mario Cantone. His humor was only
exceeded only by his in-depth knowledge of old time show biz.
https://www.gilbertpodcast.com/

And though I only met him once - for a few seconds in an elevator at the
Museum of TV and Radio (he was kind enough to pretend to laugh at a little
joke I made) - I will miss him very much.
