Check your UV terminfo files ... (and possibly your unix/linux ones
too).

There's almost certainly a setup string in their you need to tweak.

Hi All,
We are in the process of migrating fron HPUX 10.20, UV 9.4.1.1 to Redhat

8.0, UV 10.0.9. We are having a problem with Universe SET.TERM.TYPE
command. When we do 'SET.TERM.TYPE VT320 the terminal emulator (QVT
5.2) switches the number pad from numeric to application' mode. This
does not happen on our current system. Has anyone else experienced this

problem? If so, What did you do to remedy this? Thanks,

Thanks, I went through the options on the HS.ADMIN menu, including
HS.SCRUB and the HS_FILE_ACCESS file was created. For some reason it
excluded the file I need from HS_FILE_ACCESS though, even though I added

an @SELECT dictionary item. If I run CONVERT.SQL against the file (not
using my live data file), I can then see it via ODBC in Excel, but the

for the non-SQL file to HS_FILE_ACCESS?

Thanks,

Re: Using OpenOffice with UniVerse/Unidata - request for U2 users to be involved

2004-02-17 Thread Ian Stuart
Thanks to Farrel for responding to my plea and for the contact
details of other users.

I don't think this is a good move...MS-Office is bloatware, and as MS
patents it's XML formats (the Patent Office is so stoopid!
Tomorrow, I will patent Air, and start charging everyone on Earth
usage fees!), many may move away from it, if only for interoperablity
sake. But that's just my personal opinions.

This is crazy; IBM may believe that OOo does'nt meet users requirements
but that does'nt gel with our experience.

I'm faced by UniVerse customers who want to get away from Microsoft,
read about IBMs commitment to Linux, which I don't for a minute doubt,
but I cannot offer an alternative to MS Office where the users need to
use reporting tools similar to MSQuery because ODBC drivers from IBM for
U2 products on Linux are not available and the JDBC does'nt quite work
with OOo. To get around this, we're still using StarOffice 5.2 which
supports ODBC 2.0, but only on Windows PCs.

Firstly, the performance of OOo is really good and we have not been able
to match it with MS Office on a thin-client platform. At a customer site
we have successfully migrated 45 users onto a single Intel-based server
running Linux and OpenOffice for thin-client based users. This
includes those users who have the RTC syndrome (resistance to change)
like the executive secretaries and personal assistants. Whatever
functionality may be missing in OOo that is in MS Office is obviously
not used. This includes receiving and sending MS Office documents
(Excel, Word, Powerpoint) to the corporate head-office who have
inplemented MS Office.

The server also acts as the browser server for 20 users, print and file
services for the other 35 Windows users who are still to be converted
and telnet server for the 45 users who access UniVerse applications
running on IBM pSeries 615 from their low-end P1 133 Mhz PC-based thin
clients.

Secondly, You can already run MSOffice as well as IE6 on Linux under
Wine and can install it easily with crossover from Codeweavers, and the
performance in a thinclient environment is reasonable but does not
compare to OOo on Linux - we've tried MS Office/IE; it works. We've
even installed Dynamic Connect on Linux with some success.

The third issue is the cost of implementing, upgrading, licensing MS
Office. A thin client solution using MS tools (Win2000/RTS licences,MS
Office licences etc) is horrendous; but porting MS Office to Linux will
only eliminate the OS/RTS level licencing but you'll still have to pay
good money for MS Office.

The point is that there is an excellent alternative and IBM could make
the implementation of U2 products more cost-effective for users by
ensuring that the interfaces (ODBC,JDBC etc) actually work with non-MS
systems, for example what about supporting Lotus Approach - is'nt it
still their product. If IBM support MSOffice on Linux will the client
tools, UniDK etc,. for the U2 products be ported to Linux as well -
probably not at a guess, which pretty much leaves the U2 community
committed to an MS desktop environment.

What about the porting of UniVerse/UniData to Linux on the pSeries.

If you type

at TCL, it'll tell you ...

Or I'll tell you :-) From within your program (or wherever) do an

EXECUTE COMO ON PROGOUTPUT HUSH

This will create a PROGOUTPUT record in the COMO file that you can
then access with the editor or whatever you want.

To turn off the como, just do

EXECUTE COMO OFF

Re: COUNT modifying unix timestamp

2004-02-17 Thread Glenn Herbert
Actually, it was added in during release 7.x of uniVerse to support the SQL
optimizer. The optimizer used the count to make a determination on how
long it would take to perform certain SQL operations such as outer-joins,
etc, and spit out a warning message something like It will take 4307 hours
to perform this operation. Do you want to continue?. At first, only an
unqualified COUNT command (i.e. COUNT FILE) would update this field, but
sometime in early 8.x releases, I added the code into uvbackup/uvrestore so
that it would also update this field. That was quite a few years ago so I
don't have the exact timeframes, but there ya go

The other thing, of course, which timestamp? Date modified, or date

UniVerse file system revision 12 which came in at release 9.5 includes a
count of records in the file header for use by uvbackup and uvrestore. This
is updated by COUNT and by uvbackup itself (perhaps other places too).
Maybe it's time for another plug for the UniVerse Internals course where
these things get discussed???

UniVerse and Backup Exec

2004-02-17 Thread Gwen Buck
I am running:
UniVerse 10.0.17
Windows 2000 SP 4
Veritas Backup Exec: Media Server Admin. Console: Ver 9.00 Rev 4454

My Application Event Log has been showing an unusually high number of
UniVerse errors. Since I am an end user I can't go directly to IBM and
must go through my VAR. I placed a call with my VAR and sent them a
text copy of my application event log. The response was that IBM said I
should uninstall Backup Exec because they have had 250 calls where the
problem with UniVerse was resolved after removing Veritas Backup Exec.

I am stuck between a rock and a hard place now. IBM says I should
uninstall my backup software. The administrator that is responsible for
backup systems for our corporation is resistant to allowing me to do
this, however. He says that we will not uninstall Backup Exec unless
IBM can tell us specifically what the incompatibility is between it and
UniVerse. The main reasons for his stance are that the event log errors
are all labeled UniVerse errors (none are labeled as Backup Exec errors)
and the errors occur around the clock, not just when Backup Exec is
running. I had asked my VAR to request specifics regarding the
incompatibility issue from IBM but either they or IBM must have figured
that the numbers spoke for themselves because I was not given a reason.
(or possibly they don't know the reason)

Can anyone out there help me?
Does anybody know what the incompatibilities are between Veritas Backup
Exec and UniVerse?

I tend to lean towards following IBM's recommendations but just in
case... Has anyone found a way to run the two where application event
errors do not occur?

I also requested a recommendation of other backup software from them and
was not given one. If anyone has a recommendation of UV compatible
backup software that I can run on Windows, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

My problems is activating NLS - changing NLSMODE in 'uvconfig' to

Also, check that no existing 0xACEE segment exists (i'm sure this has

I'm not clear as to the exact problem. Are you saying there's a UniVerse
hashed file called journal that is not large enough for the number of
records it needs to support? If so, it will have to be resized, perhaps
changing it to a dynamic file.

Or is the journal something else? If you can clarify this, we can try to
offer specific solutions.

Another way more similar to the unix idea of redirecting stdout is to
use a different print channel directed to HOLD for some messages.
(PRINT ON n), but that file would contain ONLY the redirected messages.

Unidata ODBC initial setup error - Run out of ideas!!!

2004-02-17 Thread Dave Tabor
Hi,

Although I'm an old hand at Unidata and UniBasic, I'm a newbie to ODBC.

I am trying to set up an ODBC link to my Unidata 6.0 database, using the Unidata ODBC
driver that came with 6.0, to use in a VB.net application I'm writing. All seems to
be set properly, but if I try to do a test of my connection by going to Excel and
doing Data/Get External Data/New Database Query from the menu, I always get an error
saying Non-numeric found when numeric required.

Here's what I've done to this point:

I've modified the uni.config file on the AIX 5.1.server.

I'm creating a schema for the file using the VSG program included with Unidata 6.0.
I'm picking the file from the list of files, assigning ALL permissions to PUBLIC. I'm
creating a view and schema using all fields (I have tried with only the text fields).

My test file (1NF format) has fields of Name (25L Text), Town (25L Text) Code (8R
Number Conv=MR0). My @ID is a number (3 records: 1, 2 3). Valid data in each
field. I've tried the @ID field with and without a Conv of MR0. With the MR0, VSG
calls it an integer. Without the MR0, VSG calls it a VARCHAR. I get no errors while
creating the schema in VSG, and I do see all the 'D' type dictionary fields in VSG, so
it appears that it's not a network related error.

I'm creating a link to the database in Windows XP Pro (and Win2000 Pro) -
Administration Tools - Data Sources. There isn't much to configure here, and I think
it's all set up ok.

I'm trying to use Excel (have tried Access, too), to see if I can pull in the data,
and I always get the message Non-numeric found when numeric required.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
- Dave

Dear Gwen Buck et al

I am running UV 9.6.2.8 on a WinNT 4.0 SP 6.0a box using Veritas Backup

I haven't had any problems. I'd press your VAR for more detail. One
possible solution would be to run a uvbackup and allow Veritas to backup
the output from uvbackup.

Good luck.

RE: UV write fatal error

Does the data value actually get inserted into the type 25 file if you
check after the write fails? Also, is the data pre-existing within the
type 25 file and this is an update to that record? Sounds almost like a
memory allocation or rotating file pool problem.

The on error branch (actually ANY branch) would only be followed if the
run-machine wasn't crashing underneath you, which, if you are being dropped
back to the command prompt, is happening.

RE: D3 and use of compares on indices

2004-02-17 Thread astarte00
Well -- the key is indexed...and so is the date field so the caveat does not apply in
this case -- more likely the elusive version 8 is the answer

--
Debster
--
From Lee Bacall:

A bit of a caveat in making selects against indexed keys may be helpful...

If one is doing a select against a file with an indexed key, as:
SELECT YOURFILE WITH YOURKEY = YOURREQUEST
will build a select list against only those records containing the key data
YOURREQUEST

If, on the other hand if one is doing a select against a file (even when all
requested criteria are indexed) as:
SSELECT YOURFILE WITH FIRSTKEY = YOURREQUEST AND WITH SECONDKEY =
OTHERSTUFF AND WITH THIRDKEY = ABC BY FIRSTKEY BY SECONDKEY BY
THIRDKEY

The entire file (at least in D3 and jBASE) will be stepped through /
searched, WITHOUT the benefit of using keys.

Here is some methodology that we have developed to:
1. clarify the building and maintenance of select statements
2. ensure that keys are used to reduce system resource requirements

EQU TRUE TO 1, FALSE TO 0
Sel =
failure = FALSE
cmd = \SELECT YOURFILE WITH FIRSTKEY = FIRSTTHINGIE\
Sel1,-1=cmd
*
cmd = \SELECT YOURFILE WITH SECONDKEY=SECONDTHINGIE\
Sel1,-1=cmd
*
*where thirdkey may be a non-indexed element
cmd=\SELECT YOURFILE WITH THIRDKEY=YOUGETTHEPICTURE\
Sel1,-1=cmd
*
*Now, order the list
cmd=\SSELECT YOURFILE BY FIRSTKEY BY SECONDKEY BY THIRDKEY\
*
max=DCOUNT(Sel1,@VM)
FOR z = 1 TO max UNTIL failure
   EXECUTE Sel1,z CAPTURING messages
   failure=NOT(SYSTEM(11))
NEXT z

IF NOT(failure) THEN
GOSUB DoYourThing ;! not shown
END

STOP.

This will ensure that btree keys will be used to make the initial list
selections.
The non-indexed keys would then be used in secondary tiers of the select
procedure to reduce the impact of having to step through the entire file.
After the selections are made, the list can then be ordered with greatly
reduced impact on the system.

Any comments?

On D3 VERION 7.3 what is the syntax to use compares other than = if you
are using an indexed dictionary in the statement. It seems to return the
correct items if it is simply looking for an equal condition but anything
other, such as etc. It appears that it does not use the index, but
rather scans the entire file when these operators are used. This becomes a
problem especially when a date field has been indexed since that is the most
common application.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? This is D3 on W2k

RE: Unidata ODBC initial setup error - Run out of ideas!!!

2004-02-17 Thread alfkec
What version of the driver do you have? I had similar issues with an old
driver, I now have 3.01.04.7036 which seems to be working OK, I think it is
from the 6.0B Client CD. Although at one time it would work from Access but
not Excel?!?! I'm not sure what's changed (perhaps some MS updates).

The other key thing is the UCI.CONFIG file. If you treat *everything* in
this file as case-sensitive things seem to work a lot easier.

IBM also sent me this tech tip when I had this problem:

Can you check if this TechTip helps solve the problem. It seems to be an

issue with Microsoft Excel.

With the upgrade to Microsoft's ODBC Administrator 3.0 there is a change in

the use of data source definition with the 32 bit data source. Use of

Office 97 or upgrading to Visual Basic 5.0 automatically upgades the 32 bit

ODBC Administrator to 3.0 from the previous 2.0 or 2.5 versions.

Unfortunately, there is a confusing error that is generated from Microsoft

Query/Excel when you try to get external data :

Key value must not contain any of the following characters: []{}(),;?*=!@

After you create the data source as a User DSN, you need to create a

file.dsn text file. In Windows 95/Windows NT in the directory path /Program

Files/Common Files/ODBC/Data Sources.

copy an existing .dsn file (or with any editor create a new one). The file

contains the following:

[ODBC]

DSN=sourcename

(where sourcename is the name of your data source). If your User DSN entry

data source = TSTODBC, then create a file called TSTODBC.dsn or any name

you choose with the .dsn suffix. The text is as above:

[ODBC]

DSN=TSTODBC

RE: UV write fatal error

2004-02-17 Thread Glenn Herbert
Ok. So there WAS a bscan done on the T25 file prior to attempting the
write. Since this is done from within BASIC, my guess is that the active
scan is causing some type of error. Try this; after the scan has verified
that the data item does NOT exist, close and reopen the data file, THEN
attempt your write (yes I know that this may invalidate the notion that the
record does not exist). This would test to see if the active scan of the
T25 file is interfering with the low level write, as the close of the data
file would automatically terminate the scan (there is no other way from
within BASIC). I wrote the code for bscan back in 1992 so I don't recall
all different interactions involved, but it could be a long-standing bug
that never appeared or not reported. In any case, if you could try that,
I'd be interested in the results.

At 12:11 PM 02/17/2004, you wrote:

RE: Need/Want/Would like to know

2004-02-17 Thread Glenn Herbert
It's because the underlaying function first free's off the memory of X(100)
before storing the value of A into it. Problem is, the contents for A
actually reside in the just free'd up memory location for X(100),
hence you are trying to store something that was previously defined in that
location BACK into the same location. No can do.

RE: Need/Want/Would like to know

2004-02-17 Thread Gyle Iverson
Hello, Mike.

I added a print X(100) following the Call in P1 and that fails too.

I suppose that the X(100) element is being cleared before the assignment
of A. However, as A is a pointer to X(100), both become cleared.

Perhaps the move_matrix op-code should test if the r-value (e.g. A)
resolves to the same l-value element (e.g. X(100)) and treat the
statement as a no-op in such cases.

One can short-circuit the problem by adding an intermediate variable,
such as, C = A; X(100) = C, in P2.

Interesting puzzle. I wonder if there is a GTAR on this?

Best regards,
Gyle

Thanks for pointing me to the pickwiki. That was a lot easier to follow
than the UV documentation. I made sure the correct SQL types were in
attr. 8 of all the dict items. I had previously cleared the entire dict
and put in only the things I needed (I copied the live file to a
separate ODBC-only account), so I only have a handful to worry about. I
also manually added the file to HS_FILE_ACCESS. I used the verbose
version of HS.UPDATE.FILEINFO from the wicki and there were no
complaints about this particular file. Still can't get this file to be
seen though. HS.SCRUB does give an error message on all the I-type dict
items and I'm not sure exactly what it's telling me. I get this message:

CUST.CITY was analyzed using VARCHAR(254) for a data type
* Invalid conversion code '   '.
And here's the I-type:

0001: I
0002: TRANS(CR,@ID[8,8],21,X)
0003:
0004: CITY
0005: 20L
0006: S
0007:
0008: VARCHAR
The I-type is referencing a file that's a Q-pointer to a non-SQL file in
another account. All the other I-types it complains about point to the
same file. The only other potential problem I can think of is since I'm
using a stripped down version of the actual dict, there are attributes
in the data portion that now have no corresponding dict entry. Could
this be a problem?

Thanks,
John

If you have trouble getting an upgrade CD from your vendor you can download
the Client CD from the IBM website under the Personal Edition.

I don't think there is any difference on the client side...

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions. Here's what I've found.

I've got the Unidata ODBC driver version number 3.01.04.7013,
so it's a little earlier than you mentioned. I also tried
setting up a .dsn file as you mentioned, and that didn't seem
to work either.

Is there a way to download a 'Service Pack' for this, or do I
need to obtain an upgrade CD from our VAR?

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

I have frequently found that I have needed to stop UniVerse two or three

Also try nls.stamp just before the uvregen and see if that makes a

The information flow problem is that messages, especially email,
don't always arrive and sort threaded. This is problem is further
compounded because somebody could reply today to a message that was

There really are no valid reasons to top-post, but there are plenty
of valid reasons to inter-post and trim the quoted material. That's
why it's been a flameable action on Usenet for over twenty years.
Top-posting has only become more common in recent years because OE

That doesn't change the fact that Mocrslops refusal to follow established
standards make it nearly impossible for their *experienced* to follow those
same standards. Add millions of new users every month and Micro$lop has
managed to totally destroy the standard. That leads to the mentioned
aversion.

Usually most of the threads are in blocks in the intray. I don't know

There are many email and newsreaders that have allowed threading for much
longer than OE. Some do it much better. Of course, when OE comes free on
every desktop more and more of the alternatives are going away. More
reason for the adversion

The sorting does go astray when someone changes the subject - so
 please restrain yourselves.

But what do we do when the thread a) goes *totally* off-topic or b) changes
to a new subject? Convention has always been that the subject should
reflect the content, and that there should be a way for the reader to
filter out the OT messages. As much as I would like to see you be able to
use OE to the fullest, it is more important to me that I follow 20 year old
established conventions.

 My 2¢

My 2¢ would be that even more important than posting your response directly
after the text you are replying to would be to remove extra text. Because
you failed to do that those that read the digest will be forced to wade
through Ray's post all over again. While it was a high quality post, full

don't really care whether you follow the convention or not, but please,
*please*, **please**, trim your posts so the digesters can get the full

I'm not clear as to the exact problem. Are you saying there's a UniVerse

records it needs to support? If so, it will have to be resized, perhaps
changing it to a dynamic file.

Or is the journal something else? If you can clarify this, we can try to
