If you Dont Agree, Prove it... Everybody can Talk.. Where are your
 Test Results?

The problem with performance tests is that there are so many variables.
And
then if you remove a lot of the variables to perform a lab test, that does
not reflect real world.

So then you try and make your lab conditions simulate real world - and
simply doing a COUNT on a file is not enough - sorry !

Yes, UV could count for 15 mins if say the file was really badly sized. So
what does that mean ? It does not mean that UV is crap, it means it's not
been tuned right.

Send Michael Schumaker round the track with flat tyres - when he does not
perform is that the fault of the car ?

So my final point is that it takes time and effort to do proper testing -
something most of us are not going to dedicate resources to just to prove
a
point here.

Re: UV: How do I determine whether a file is using 64 bit or 32 bitaddressing

2004-04-06 Thread Ray Wurlod
The STATUS statement (not the same as the STATUS function) returns a dynamic array of
information about an open file. According to the BASIC manual, there are 30 fields.

A little research has revealed that there are, in fact, 32 fields returned.

Field 31 is the magic number, for example ACEF010B.
Field 32 is an indicator of addressing mode. 1 = 32-bit old format, 3 = 32-bit new
format, 5 = 64-bit.

Code:
OpenPath hashedfilepath To FileVariable
Then
   Status FileStuff From FileVariable
   Then
  If FileStuff32 = 5
  Then
 * file uses 64-bit addressing
  End
  Else
 * file uses 32-bit addressing
  End
   End
End

Re: Makeudt

2004-04-06 Thread Dirk H Bartley
Greetings U2-users

I also am having similar issues. There are three unidata machines here,
1 production and one backup 5.2 on Redhat 7.0 and also one Personal
Edition on Redhat 9 so I have a couple of machine I can test with.

I would like to make it so I can succeed at trying a couple of things
which require making and linking. The things I would like to try are
using callc, callbasic and/or intercall.

For callc, it is required to follow some steps making a c program and
compiling and then executing makeudt. When I do this I get the
following error:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] work]# rm udt_test
rm: remove `udt_test'? y
[EMAIL PROTECTED] work]# makeudt
Are you ready to use cfuncdef in /usr/ud52/work
to make a new udt? (y/n) y

Generating new udt. It takes a while.
Please wait ...

make -f new.mk udt:
cc -O2 -c funchead.c
cc -O2 -c interfunc.c
cc -O2 -c callcf.c
cc -O2 -c efs_init.c
cc funchead.o interfunc.o callcf.o efs_init.o
/usr/ud52/work/c_example.o \

-o ./udt_test
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lndbm
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [udt] Error 1
Execute make -f new.mk udt error, errno = 0

Can anybody confirm for me that -lndbm should be replaced with -lgdbm.
When I try that I get it to compile, but running udt gives me an
immediate segmentation fault.

ictest and intercall

When I try to compile ictest I get the following:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] work]# make -f ictest.mak ictest
cc ictest.o -L -luvic -lsocket -lnsl -lm -lc -o ictest
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lsocket
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [ictest] Error 1

Can anyone tell me if there is a socket library I need to install or
point to??

When I try the same things on the personal edition, I get the same
errors.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

VOC prompt issue?

2004-04-06 Thread Karl L Pearson
I have this VOC item we run:

ED VOC BIN.LOC
7 lines long.

: P

0002: CLEARDATA
0003: CLEARSELECT
0004: SELECT INVMST WITH F12 = ENTER BIN LOCATION TO LIST ITEMS FOR:

0005: SELECT INVMST WITH WAREHOUSE = 1 REQUIRE.SELECT
0006: SELECT INVMST WITH F12 # '' REQUIRE.SELECT
0007: LIST INVMST BY F04 BY ITEM F04 F12 ITEM F13 F14 F28 T48 DOLR DOLS
ID.SUP LPTR DBL-SPC HEADING SPECIAL FOR CHRISTINE...ALL ITEMS IN A
SPECIFIC BIN LOCATION 'T' PAGE 'P' REQUIRE.SELECT
Bottom at line 7.

When it's run multiple times, the second time re-prints the first run
without prompting for a new bin location. Logging off, which I suspect
clears something or other, allows the person to run it on a second item.

Any thoughts?

Sure. Try this:

003.5: * ENTER BIN LOCATION TO LIST ITEMS FOR
0004: SELECT INVMST WITH F12 = ENTER BIN LOCATION TO LIST ITEMS FOR:

I'm not on a UV machine right now, so I can't check the syntax. I don't
think you need the quotes you originally had in line 4, but I'm not 100%
certain.

On the newly inserted line, make sure there's a space between the asterisk
and the Less_Than sign, otherwise the interpreter will think it's a globally
cataloged routine.

I put CLEARPROMPTS AND A, and it's working as expected now. I suspect
either of them would have worked, but both is nice, too...

Thanks to the winners, Glenn, Wyatt, Marlene (and any others who knew
but are patient enough to wait to see who else responds).

I didn't try the * . . . suggestion. I don't understand that one but
have seen the others ('A waist is a terrible thing to mind' or something
like that) but couldn't get them out of the gray matter.

[ADMIN] VIRUS ALERT!!

2004-04-06 Thread Clif Oliver
Some of you may have received an e-mail claiming your account was
being shutdown for (improper usage, spam, a proxity trojan, etc.). The
mail is usually signed oliver.com Team, [EMAIL PROTECTED],
[EMAIL PROTECTED], etc.

THIS IS A SPOOFED MESSAGE by a virus that goes through Outlook address
books, collects addresses, and generates these spoof messages.

The only valid message of anyone being suspended was the Cyberspanking
issued last night.

I post only as [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I will repost this message later today from my other machine so I can
digitally sign it for verification.

Interesting timing of this attack, however. Makes one wonder

If you Dont Agree, Prove it... Everybody can Talk.. Where are your
Test Results?
The problem with performance tests is that there are so many variables.
And
then if you remove a lot of the variables to perform a lab test, that
does
not reflect real world.

So then you try and make your lab conditions simulate real world - and
simply doing a COUNT on a file is not enough - sorry !
Yes, UV could count for 15 mins if say the file was really badly
sized. So
what does that mean ? It does not mean that UV is crap, it means it's
not
been tuned right.

Send Michael Schumaker round the track with flat tyres - when he does
not
perform is that the fault of the car ?

So my final point is that it takes time and effort to do proper
testing -
something most of us are not going to dedicate resources to just to
prove
a
point here.

Re: Makeudt

2004-04-06 Thread Tim MacInnes

Hi Dirk,

Wound up solving my own problem somewhat in that I had a few missing libraries. After
some further investigation, I had to go back to a machine with RedHat 7.3 on it.
Apparently IBM's binary distribution of UniData for linux is compiled on RedHat 7.X,
and compiler differences after that make it impossible to makeudt.

I was able to get callc and intercall compiled and working fine. Also am using a
compiled version of some freeware called CALLUB to connect cgi scripts to a UniData
database.

Good luck with your testing!

I also am having similar issues. There are three unidata machines

I would like to make it so I can succeed at trying a couple of things
which require making and linking. The things I would like to try are
 using callc, callbasic and/or intercall.

For callc, it is required to follow some steps making a c program and
compiling and then executing makeudt. When I do this I get the
 following error:

Can anybody confirm for me that -lndbm should be replaced with -
 lgdbm.
When I try that I get it to compile, but running udt gives me an
 immediate segmentation fault.

 ictest and intercall

When I try to compile ictest I get the following:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] work]# make -f ictest.mak ictest
cc ictest.o -L -luvic -lsocket -lnsl -lm -lc -o ictest
 /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lsocket
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
 make: *** [ictest] Error 1

Can anyone tell me if there is a socket library I need to install or
 point to??

When I try the same things on the personal edition, I get the same
 errors.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

[UV] READ READU on a part file belonging to a Distributed file

2004-04-06 Thread Adrian . Womack
Under Universe if I attempt to read a record (using READ) from a part file
but using a key which actually maps (via the partitioning algorithm) to a
different part file - then the READ just takes the ELSE clause without
setting STATUS() to anything.

Altering the program to use READU instead of READ and the ELSE clause is
still taken - but this time STATUS() is set to 2.

Looking in the Universe Basic manual I can't find mention of what a STATUS()
value of 2 means in relation to a READU statement (although it does say -2
(negative 2) signifies the part number is invalid. I checked ED.B and
COPY.B in the uv BP file, and both of these programs specifically check for
a STATUS() value of 1 or 2 after doing a READU and then display an
appropriate error message relating to part files and distributed files.

What I can't understand is why the READ (without setting a lock) doesn't
return the same STATUS(). How am I supposed to determine that the reason the
record wasn't found was due to key being invalid and not just because it
didn't exist?

If I remember correctly under PI/Open when attempting to READ (or READU) a
record using an incorrect key, the program would take the ON ERROR clause
with STATUS() being set to 32240.

Another related problem were having at the moment - when attempting to read
a VALID record from a part file via uvnet using READ - the record is read
correctly BUT using READU the ELSE clause is taken and again STATUS()
returns 2 even though the record does exist in the file. Any ideas on this
one?

RE: Makeudt

2004-04-06 Thread Ken Wallis
Dirk Bartley wrote:

Found out from some googling around that I needed the elf libraries.
That got me to the ndbm issue. What other libraries did you discover
were required?? Is the gdbm library a correct replacement for the ndbm
library?? The other library I am stuck on is when compiling ictest it
keeps telling me I need a 'socket' library. Did you run into this??

Apparently IBM's binary distribution of UniData for linux is compiled
on RedHat 7.X, and compiler differences after that make it
impossible to makeudt.

If this is for a proper, licenced installation of UniData and not just for
the PE version, I'd strongly suggest you get in touch with IBM support on
this. There are specific point releases of UniData which are needed for
specific Linux builds if you want to use makeudt. Your experience of
successfully building a udt only to have it seg fault is something I've seen
and it came down to needing a different ud version for that Linux build.

A potential start point is the availability matrix, but I don't think it is
entirely up to date:
https://www-927.ibm.com/software/data/u2/support/u2techconnect/matrix.asp

Also, before you search the world for libraries to install on your Linux
box, I'd try removing references to the missing libs from the base.mk file.
I know you don't need to link with libelf, and seem to recall that libsocket
is no longer a separate library, but is instead now rolled into libc. I'm
not sure that libndbm is necessary either.

HTH,

Ken
