Not really. It has the named @ variables like @userno, @ selected,
@vm, etc but the terminal control codes @(-1), @(-2), @(-3), etc are
not there. At least not in my (admittedly old, 10.2) version.

Lets say you have a field that calls a subroutine.

In this routine you do a read to lookup a description which it what is passed
back.

When you do a LIST to create a report with this field will the read be done
each time?

I was just wondering how the Universe system handle's this.

Dose the system store the first read in it's in memory and just uses that
instead of doing a read each time?

Re: [U2] LIST reports and Fields that Do reads

2013-07-23 Thread mhilbert
The READ is executed each time, but if the record being read is in
virtual memory, this second "read" doesn't occur at the disk level. If
the file being read is relatively small (ex.: descriptions) it will
probably end up in memory quick enough and not provoke performance
issues.

Re: [U2] LIST reports and Fields that Do reads

2013-07-23 Thread Wjhonson
To poke a point, let me address the issue of the
"field that does a read"

If what you mean is, that you have a dictionary
entry which is an I descriptor of the SUBR type
then the subroutine code is only read once
and stored.

If the subroutine does a BASIC READ in its
own code, that read will be repeated each time
its accessed because the system really has
no way of knowing that it's a repeat read.

If your I description only does something like
a TRANS command to a file, the file pointer
will be read and stored once, and then ref'ed
on each subsequent touch in that query.

However any underlying record in that query
will be read again.

So you get half and half.

Wow, I thought that was SOP these days across all "new" MV apps of any
size. Then again we hardly ever discuss style and coding patterns in
these forums so it's no surprise that patterns like this aren't as
common as Design Patterns ala GOF.

I never re-open a file if it's used across many programs, and I use
Include items to contain the housekeeping that determines whether to
open the files and to do the opening. I use named common in D3 because
it keeps the files open across level pushing and between TCL
executions. The pattern is:

- Enter into a program
- Move into the Include code
- If current account is not the same as the prior account, set INIT=-1
- Check INIT flag
-- If not set or -1 do all initialization, open files
-- Otherwise just continue
- Return to the "functional" code

These patterns make for small and well organized code. It's easy to
make a single change that affects the entire application (need to get
them right though). Adding new modules is easier because the
housekeeping is already done elsewhere. Optimizations in one place can
impact the entire app.

In UniData we also make sure the file is opened to a COMMON variable. Makes a
huge performance difference vs doing the OPEN on every call to the subroutine.
YMMV

You don't need to create a dictionary item if it's a one-off ...

For a one-off, just put (iirc the syntax correctly)

EVAL "FIELD(@ID,"*",1)"

as the field name in the list command. You can modify the way it
displays with things like the FMT option, there are more ...

Mind you, there's a good chance this I-type already exists in the
dictionary, if the dictionary was set up properly.

Cheers,

Re: [U2] List..

2013-03-26 Thread Brian Leach
Hi Satya

When you LIST a file, the database shows you one of a number of things.

1. If you are on UniData and have an @UQ phrase, it will show that.
2. If you have an @ phrase, it will show that.
3. If not, it will show the key field (@ID).

Now, the @ and @UQ phrases are known as the default listing.
The idea of this is to give an indication of what the file holds - not all
the fields in the file as that be a pain to look through, but just enough to
give a sense of the main fields.

So you have a number of choices:

1. Change the @ID field so it only returns the first part. Bad idea - it
will confuse others who expect to see and select the whole key.
2. Create an @ phrase to make the default listing. That is generally okay so
long as everyone knows that is what is being shown.
3. Create your own phrase and use that i.e. LIST FILENAME SATYA

For (2) and (3) you can word your phrase like this assuming you are on
UniVerse or UniData in ECLTYPE U:

1> PH
2> EVAL "@ID['*',1,1]" ID.SUP

That will give you just the first part of the @ID field.

Re: [U2] List..

At least for UV (not sure about Unidata).

You would need to do two things.

1. create a DICT item that only displays the first part of the @ID up to the *
   ED DICT filename NEWID
   I
   001: I
   002: FIELD(@ID,"*",1)
   003:
   004: NEWID
   005: 10L (max width you want your column to be)
   006: S

2. create a new default paragraph field listing DICT item (called @)
   ED DICT filename @
   001: PH
   002: NEWID BY NEWID (Anything you would want after the SELECT FILENAME...)

That's it, now when you LIST filename, it will use the new paragraph entry.

You can make any combination of paragraph listing entries you want, say you
called
It "NEWLIST2" - you would use it like: LIST filename NEWLIST2

I am guessing that these are lines on a sales order (SODET). List the Dict to
SODET (or whatever) with the LISTDICT FILENAME command. If you are using SB,
you will wind up with a bunch of things other than true Dicts (like screens),
but this is a start. Look for an I-Descriptor that does a FIELD command or a G
(group extraction) on the key, @ID or whatever.

You could also make an educated guess as to what it might be called and type
something like:
SELECT DICT SODET = "SO]"
Followed by the LISTDICT command. This will limit what you see, but again, you
have to have a guess as to what the name might be. If you are running in
native UniData or UniVerse mode, the select would look like:
SELECT DICT SODET WITH @ID LIKE "SO..."

This is also assuming I have the file name correct. :-)

We use SB where I work and I build a VOC called LISTDICT2 that does the same
thing as LISTDICT but strips out the non-Dict items. Let me know if you want
it.

You can do this in various ways, the simplest is probably to add a conversion

I want ends with so you don't use the trailing ellipses just ...DOG
The LIKE can take single or double quotes without care (that's in the
documentation)
You missed the point of my message which was that putting the ellipses outside
the quotes makes the statement fail.
That's why it fails, not because of the quote type.
Try it with double quotes. I bet it still fails if the ellipses is outside the
quotes.

Re: [U2] list DICT uniObjects

2009-07-14 Thread Brian Leach
Edwin

Two ways to do this:

The quick/dirty and frankly not very good way is to use UniXML:

  private DataSet ds;
private Boolean showDict(String fileName, UniSession sess,
DataGridView dg) {
UniXML xml = sess.CreateUniXML();
xml.GenerateXML("SORT DICT " + fileName);
ds = xml.GetDataSet();
dg.AutoGenerateColumns = true;
dg.DataSource = ds.Tables[0];
return true;
}

The better way is create a DictItem class to hold the dictionary elements,
e.g.

class DictItem{
  private String _id = String.Empty;
  private String _type = String.Empty;
  private Int32 _fno = 0;
  (etc)
  public String Id{
   get { return _id; }
   set { _id = value; }
  }
  (etc)
}

You can then populate a List by reading each one from the
dictionary, and set that as the data source for the grid.

private List list = new List();
private Boolean showDict(String fileName, UniSession sess,
DataGridView dg){

UniFile dict = sess.CreateUniFile("DICT " + fileName);
UniSelectList sel = sess.CreateUniSelectList(0);
sel.Select(dict);
while (sel.LastRecordRead == false) {
String id = sel.Next();
if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(id) == false) {
UniDynArray dictRec = dict.Read(id);
DictItem item = new DictItem();
item.Id = id;
item.Type = dictRec.Extract(1).StringValue;
// etc
list.Add(item);
}
}

dg.DataSource = list;
return true;
}

Re: [U2] LIST DICT.DICT

2009-05-19 Thread dennis bartlett
I'm sure cds thought he was making sense...

perhaps he meant to say that in raw pick (R83 era) the system is a series of
DICTS (from a system dict called ACCOUNTS which holds all the account names
one can login to), to an account dict which holds all the filenames in an
account, to a file dict which holds all the field names in a file).

Used to be you could ED DICT VOC (then called the MD, short for Master
Dictionary) which got you to the same place as DICT.DICT

Re: [U2] LIST DICT.DICT

2009-05-19 Thread dennis bartlett
it lists the dictionary that is applied to dictionaries, ie

   - allows you to change the default fields that show when you list the
   DICT of a normal file (you can change the field headings to something that
   makes sense in your world),
   - change the @ field (the PHrase that lists those fields that show by
   default when you just type LIST {dict} filename)
   - lets you see the implied fields associated with dictionaries and how
   they are created
   - change default widths of fields (not often a good idea - better to
   create your own)
   - all the other @ type variables that no-one ever uses

RE: [U2] LIST DICT.DICT

2009-05-18 Thread Jo Lester
Sorry if I was too short. DICT.DICT is the default dictionary of all
Dictionary files that ships with the system and defines how the Dictionaries
of all files are structured.

By listing it you can see what part of a record to inspect to extract the
information you want.

You will see that different types of dictionary items have different
structures.

I don't know if this applies to Unidata as it does to Universe.

Re: [U2] LIST DICT.DICT

2009-05-18 Thread Charles Stevenson
One quick point is that this is one of the differences between Pick
heritage & Prime heritage.

See "Guide for Pick Users" in the UV doc set. If you were a Pickie, it
helps UV make sense in a hurry. UV republished that guide after a long
lapse, thanks to U2UG's pressure, iirc.
For Primates, the guide is useless except if encountering uv's Pick
flavour or $OPTIONS PICK For the 1st time. It might be useful for UV
programmers leaving for D3 or JBase.

In Pick, MD was truly the Master Dictionary that serves as the
dictionary for all the data dictionaries defined it it.
Prime heritage has DICT.DICT. Whenever a regular ol' dictionary needs a
dictionary, Prime went to VOC DICT.DICT and used whatever was in <2>
there as the dictionary.
LIST DICT XYZ lists VOC XYZ <3>'s file according to VOC
DICT.DICT <2> as the dictionary.

For extra credit:
Typically VOC DICT.DICT <2> and <3> are set to the same thing, so
that when you

   LIST  DICT.DICT
& LIST  DICT   DICT.DICT
both become self referent.
But look what happens when the paths in <2> & <3> are different.
 LIST DICT.DICT lists <2>'s file, according to <3>'s
dictionary.
 LIST   DICTDICT.DICTlists <3>'s file according to <2>'s
dictionary.

I still miss Prime. The king is dead. Long live the king.

This is why proxys where invented. Having worked at companies where you are

a separate physical network to all our 'work' PCs. The only exceptions
are specified gateway servers, e.g. the external email gateway, which
are firewalled to death and heavily protected from intrusion. Our
internet web sites are not hosted on our internal network.
So to access a web-based forum, I need an 'Internet PC', the nearest of
which is down the corridor a bit. So I wouldn't be bothered, I only go
to an 'Internet PC' for a specific purpose.
Like Jerry said, changing this to a forum would also change me from a
participant to an observer.

Oh, and Happy New Year! :-)

RE: [U2] list vs. email {Unclassified}

2008-01-06 Thread HENDERSON MIKE, MR
It's not only to "inhibit Suzy in accounting from wasting time", and
it's not only "the PHBs [who] will not allow the users to surf the net".
Having your desktop PC able to access the internet means that it's
accessible from the internet too, at least to some hopefully small
degree of risk.

My employer requires that PCs which are connected to the Internet be on
a separate physical network to all our 'work' PCs. The only exceptions
are specified gateway servers, e.g. the external email gateway, which
are firewalled to death and heavily protected from intrusion. Our

If they can block hotmail, yahoo and myspace, then they can allow
www.rainingdata.com and www.ibm.com. The barriers people present aren't
technical, but overall corporate policies meant to inhibit Suzy in

Hi Jerry - I get that (I was actually replying to WOL in the quote below) - It
must be very difficult for you to have limited web access within the office. I
for one NEED such access in order to do my job - log calls on the ibm web site,
download os patches etc. Your comments on here are most welcome and I am quite

Maybe you didn't get my last message. It doesn't matter around here if a
forum is better or not, the PHB's will not allow the users to surf the
net even to get email. At one time I was registered on this list as my
personal hotmail account but I had to stop using it because they blocked
access to hotmail. I also have accounts at yahoo and my space but those
are or were blocked so I have to use my business email account to keep
from having it blocked. The only other way would be to only look at the
questions and responses from home afterhours; in that case I would be an
observer and not a participant. Personally I like to think on occasion I
have helped someone on this list instead of just gathering the knowledge
of these fine people without giving anything back.

will show you the format of the items you need to add to the voc to create

2007-10-16 Thread IT-Laure Hansen
Are you on Universe?

If so, the F1 etc records need to exist in VOC (not DICT VOC - just VOC)
to be accessible in all list commands.

It appears that this cross-reference file just appends work order
numbers.

In the dictionary, I can explicitly define the eleventh field and then
see the data.

Is there a way to list the data with with something like an F11
shortcut?

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Maby Kevin's list was pre-Internet, at any rate it didn't even make an
indelible mark with the "listees" .

An effective list would need to be advertised, on-line and in front of
all vendors of MV database/development software and related production,
systemic or applications software.

I'm like almost every one else on this list. I don't mind sharing my

lazy and taking advantage of all the good folks here, and I'll bend over
backwards to help someone out.

But that's just me and my jaded perspective. Lash me with a wet noodle
if that'll help you out!

Oh, and these comments are my own and nobody else's so don't be bugging
anyone.  'Kay?

RE: [U2] LIST DICT FILE Depth and Assoc

2006-05-17 Thread Stuart . Boydell
   John,

   If Design Bais is riding on the back of SB+ field definitions then you
   may be able to use D/I types. SB+ can be set to create and maintain D
   & I types by setting DMCONT SB.CONTROL<34,1> = 1 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]<34,1>).

   At last look there was a bug in the UV version of SB.FD.S regarding
   setting the S/M field for "I(function)" type derived fields. Maybe
   they've fixed it. I just wrote a quick/dirty wrapper for SB.FD.S which
   handled it.

   0001 subroutine SB.FD.S

   0002 * wrapper to 'fix' SB+ I(function) derived fields not setting S/M
   field correctly

   0003

   0004 include DMSKELCODE COMMON

   0005

   0006localParam  = PARAM

   0007localKey= KEY

   0008localValue  = VALUE

   0009localRecord = RECORD

   0010localFile   = F.FILE

   0011

   0012 sbFDS  = '*SB+.DEFN*SB.FD.S' ;*// globally catalogue original
   SB+ subroutine.

   0013call @sbFDS

   0014

   0015   if   SB.CONT<34,1>   =   1   and   localParam   =   4   and
   localRecord<8>[1,2] = 'I(' and index(localRecord<2>,'M',1) = 0 then

   0016   recordlocku localFile,localKey locked return

   0017   writev 'S' on localFile,localKey,6

   0018end

   0019

   0020 return

   __

   Stuart,
   it just so happens that Design Bais will convert D types to A types
   when
   you modify anything that is not confined to their extended dictionary.
   Maybe System Builder does the same thing ?
   Hence you can end up loosing certain dict info such as S/M, SQL
   settings and
   Value marks in the headings.
   Even though i came from a pick background i prefer D & Is so i am not
   happy
   about this and would prefer the original dictionary type be
   maintained.
   Hopefully this will be addressed but in the meantime if its an issue i
   can
   create a separate dictionary but it means you have to be careful in
   accounts
   that are not primarily DB.

Subject: RE: [U2] LIST DICT FILE Depth and Assoc

Dictionaries do not control the contents of data files, so there's no real
way to to determine if an attribute contains multi-values or not.
Generally, MV databases are multi-value self aware. This does not apply
to
UniData (except for conversion codes). By this I mean if you "LIST
SOMEFILE

SOMEFIELD" you will get output that will look like:

SOMEFILE.. SOMEFIELD.
1  14016
  14017
  14018
2  14019

...where records in the file have multi-values in the SOMEFIELD attribute.
If you place a conversion code, like "D2/", in attribute 7 or 8 of an "A"
or

"S" type dictionary, the conversion will execute on each value:

SOMEFILE.. SOMEFIELD.
1  05/16/2006
  05/17/2006
  05/18/2006
2  05/19/2006

For reasons I won't get into here, conversion codes are normally placed
into
attribute 7 of an "A" or "S" type dictionary (attribute 3 of "D" or
"I"/"V"

type dictionaries).

"D" or "I"/"V" type dictionaries do contain a loose definition of whether
an

attribute is multi-value or not. Attribute 6 of this type of dictionary
contains that information. In UniData, in order for multi-value
processing

to occur in UniQuery, this attribute __MUST__ be defined as multi-valued.
Still, however, the database does not require it.

The use of attribute 4 and 5 of an "A" or "S" type dictionary defines a
multi-value association. For instance, if an A/P invoice record exists it
usually has two attributes defined as G/L account#s and associated
amounts.
In this case you could define an association in these types of
dictionaries

as "D;.." and "C;..", where ".." is the appropriate associated attribute
number. One of these is controlling and one is dependent. This concept
doesn't really exist in UV and UD, except in these types of attributes (UV
only).

So, if you're using a front-end tool you can define an "A" or "S" type
dictionary as multi-value by putting an "M" or "S" in attribute 11 of the
dictionary then tell your tool to look there.

Hope this helps.

Bill

Oh, I forgot a point. I'm not entirely sure but I believe our Institution
has it set up that Out of Office replies only go out to our network. I could
be wrong but I've never seen one of my own or one of my colleagues OoO
replies from a list that I know they are on. Of course, this might just be a
setting in your email client. Like, "Don't reply to lists".

RE: [U2] List dead ?

2006-04-12 Thread Ron Sharcott
My 0.02 USD (0.05 CAN)

Interesting. I find myself looking back to before I worked in IT and always
hated using Reply All. Most email conversations then were between
individuals. As I moved into an Educational institution I found that Reply
All was necessary as groups were not always available to reply to.

Now, having to be on several lists and attempting to be a 'good' member of
the community I try to throw in the odd word here and there. This often
means that Reply All is the easiest way to make sure that you get everyone.
If I don't want to clutter the list then just Reply to the individual. This
often works for suggested fixes where the expectation is that the person
would eventually post their thanks with what worked.

As courtesy, when I Reply All to a list I often edit the sender out. After
all, they get theirs from the list and really don't need two copies. Until a
programmer can make a Reply All button that can detect that your replying to
a list and to strip out the sender from the list of addresses... Well, lets
just say that that won't happen easily.

I always find it funny that Change Management falls under IT yet IT is what
doesn't want to change how they do things. Even if all it requires is "move
the mouse 1 inch to the right".

I sure am getting sick of this reply-to-one or reply-to-all debate.

If we, as supposedly talented programmers, can't find or write a listserver

Apologies in order RE: [U2] List dead ?

2006-04-11 Thread Sharyl Lindsay
 In some ways, my intent was clear and in some ways I've definitely put
my foot in it.

I meant to be harsh but I truly did not mean to go after the person, I
meant to go after the behavior. For that. I am terribly sorry.

Sharyl

Rob: Harshness does not denote a lack of intelligence or a necessity
for learning. It just means I don't always have or choose to use a tact
filter ;)

I'm more than willing to help out where I can. If you have suggestions,
where I might be of use, I would be willing to offer my time.

RE: [U2] List dead ?

2006-04-11 Thread Allen E. Elwood
I think the admin is a very intelligent person that has work do to and
***GET PAID*** for it, instead of wasting his valuable time filtering emails
from people that go on vacation/out of office work and don't have the common
sense to unsubscribe from this list until they come back.

Now if these supposedly talented programmers could learn to use their emails
correctly, we would still have the 'REPLY TO' working. But noOooo, they
have their "Out of Office" reply to their own "Out of Office" replies and in
a couple of minutes you get the deadly embrace of zillions of emails
generated.

So we end up with this mess. If you want to direct your frustration at
someone, it should be at them, not at someone that is volunteering their
time for your benefit.

And now that I've spent 20 minutes on this reply, I have to go back to work

I sure would like to see the list changed again so that it is a "reply
to all" too. I have seen too many communities fade away when the list
is not a reply to all. Just adding my .02 (and, yes, I know this is a
u2-community topic). I suspect the U2UG board is addressing this
issue.

while I don't agree with the way it was put it do agree with the point
being made.

The few postings that I have made to the list since the changes took
effect, with the exception of todays, have almost exclusively been
replied to me directly rather than to the list. I have then been
forwarding my responses to those replies to the list rather than the
senders directly.
I don't know about others - but I would rather not ever get a direct
reply - to me it completely defeats the point in having a mailing list.

The list administrator is spending plenty of his own good time on our
