wrong driver. I was using AMD's amdgpu-pro proprietary drivers. I

I've also been hit by this critical bug on my Thinkpad T550 (intel
graphic card). The symptom was that I had a very low resolution on boot
; Xorg logs showed it was using vesa ! Then I installed the package
linux-image-extra-4.4.0-43-generic and everything went back to normal.
