I'm not sure what etadmin_mod is and since you're launching it via
./etadmin_mod I'm guessing it's not part of Ubuntu.
In any case, I think the problem you're seeing is because /bin/sh now
points /bin/dash not /bin/bash. Bash provides a lot of extra options and
builtins not provided by dash, one
You might want to post you /boot/grub/menu.lst file, or at least the
relevant section. That might provide some clues.

It may be that /bin/sh on your system points to a shell that isn't
completely sh compliant (eg dash).
dash is POSIX compliant, I am going to look at this script and see if
there is a bashism in it or something

the host command is only for DNS lookups and thus bypasses /etc/hosts

audacity works without mp3 export. There are people who won't want to
install the mp3 encoding libraries but still use audacity.

a simple shell script interpreted by /bin/sh. It may be that /bin/sh on
your system points to a shell that isn't completely sh compliant (eg

Confirmed - bug persists in edgy too.
A possible workaround would be to create a symbolic link from
/usr/lib/transcriber1.5/doc to /usr/lib/transcriber/doc. That is:
ln -s /usr/lib/transcriber/doc/ /usr/lib/transcriber1.5/doc
