I booted another machine (currently running 18.04) from the USB memory
stick with 16.04 on it. I plugged in three USB memory sticks. Each came
up in a couple of seconds. When that machine is running 18.04 it takes
4+ minutes for a single memory stick to be available.
Note that dmesg shows that

there) and two others. They mounted within seconds and Nautilus
displayed their contents when the drive was clicked on.

My apologies. Sorry, but the encrypted USB drive was defective. I put it
in another computer (Ubuntu 17.10) and it would be recognized only if it
were held in the drive in a particular way. Either an internal
connection is bad or the external contacts are not aligned properly.
The other USB drive
Inserted a regular USB memory stick after the most recent update and a reboot.
I always try this after an update in case something got fixed. The memory stick
appeared on the desktop 4 minutes and 20 seconds after I inserted it. Too long,
wouldn't you say?
I tried inserting my encrypted USB
Could not mount a video DVD unless the DVD had been inserted and then
the machine rebooted. At this point, the DVD is mounted and can be
played. After ejecting the DVD and inserting another DVD, the newer DVD
is not recognized unless the machine is rebooted.

The latest Ubuntu update included Linux version 4.15.0-23-generic. This
appears, after a single test after a reboot, to have allowed a FAT-
formatted USB memory stick to be recognized and mounted. I opened the
device and copied a file to it then unmounted it with no problem.

Headphones not working for Karmic (9.10) 64-bit on a Dell Studio XPS but
speakers are working.
I´ve played with the pulseaudio volume control, turning on and off the
various devices and trying lots of combinations - no joy with any. I've
got the backports installed - all of them for 2.6.31-22.
With Ubuntu 9.04 this problem appears to have been fixed. USB devices
on my Sony VGN-A270P work well.

I upgraded a Sony Vaio VGN-A270P from 8.10 to 9.04. The problem with
the Wacom tablet had seemed to extend to general problems with the USB
interface. So, I first plugged in a USB hard drive and copied about 30
GB to it. This would have caused the OS to freeze in 8.10. However,

on/off with a Sony DRX-500UL DVD reader/writer/rewriter. With the code
active in preferences.fdi, I got continuous errors in an attempt to read
a movie DVD (Futurama Into the Wild Green Yonder). With the code

Connected a Sony DRX-S70U (which is a portable DVD reader/writer) to a

I've experienced this bug as well. I've connected three different DVD
reader/writers, two Sonys and a Targa to an IBM ThinkPad X60s and a Sony
Viao via USB. None of these worked - they behaved as described above.
Sorry, both the X60s and the Vaio are running Ubuntu 8.04, all updates
applied.

On a Sony Vaio VGN A270P, there are only a few function keys activated
when you hold down the Fn key (such as screen brightness up and down).
The screen brightness keys seem to work. However, the CD/DVD eject
button does not work. This worked fine in Gutsy (7.10). It stopped
working in 8.04 and

well.
As described by eckerj, I added radeon to the end of /etc/modules.
Then removed 'Driver vesa' from /etc/X11/xorg.conf and rebooted. High

problem started in Hardy - it would freeze (no keyboard, caps-lock key
did not function - that is, the caps-lock led did not light). I
encountered this problem when attaching a Wacom tablet (usb). However,

supposed to be, this is probably a video overlay problem associated with

1. Installed Hardy (8.04) from a CD.
2. Ran memtest for 17 hours - no errors
3. Booted Hardy
4. Connected and configured bluetooth mouse (this doesn't work great)

Connected the Wacom tablet. The machine froze in about 10 minutes. I
killed it via the power button and rebooted. Forgot to disconnect the
tablet. Machine froze again before the Gnome desktop was completely
finished building. Killed again with the power button.
Is there any other information
Okay. I'll reload Hardy (8.04), rerun the various tests (USB drive, USB
memory stick, USB Wacom) and attach what I can get. This will take me a
day or so.

As you suspected, it looks like a kernel problem. I loaded a different
distribution on the laptop (Fedora 9) to see if I could get a different
behavior. No such luck, of course - being a kernel problem, the
software is pretty much the same. But I did notice that I could get the
laptop to freeze
Okay, I've updated the machine - it's current. I've plugged in the
Wacom tablet and let it sit for 5 hours. The machine did, indeed
freeze, but here's what I did:
The tablet did not function. `lsmod` shows a wacom module running, so
I'm assuming I don't have to rebuild the kernel to get this

The Intrepid Ibex kernel huh? Okay, I'll try to find that and see if
I can get it to work. Otherwise, I'm not sure I'd be able to find the
broken lines.
In any case, something kind of odd happened. I was looking at
Xorg.0.log and wondering why there were no Wacom entries. I reached
over and

conditions made Hardy (8.04) freeze. This won't give you the log - it
FREEZES, then the log disappears on reboot. I'll reinstall Hardy and do

7.10. They do NOT work in 8.04! Something (obviously) broke sonypi
