[Bug 189616] Re: connection problems under load with hardy dovecot

2008-05-01 Thread James Troup
So we just upgraded the mail server to hardy, and unfortunately we ran
into the same problem again.

This takes the dapper backport and any possible interaction with
dapper libraries/kernel etc. out of the picture as we're now running a
vanilla hardy server (with hardy kernel and hardy dovecot) and
experiencing the same issue.

I've had to downgrade to the dapper dovecot (running on hardy) so that
our users can access their email.

[Bug 219528] Re: [SRU] recode function segfaults

2008-05-01 Thread Chuck Short
I have able to reproduce this on amd64, and I have a patch that fixes
the issue. Without this patch php5-recode is not usuable on amd64.

The problem is that 043-recode_size_t.patch does not fixes the issue
however it will be fixed in intrepid when it opens.

To reproduce this issue on hardy you have to do the following:

1. Install php5, php5-cli, and php5-recode.
2. Run the following command: php -f recode-test.php
3. You will get a segmentation fault.

[Bug 224791] Re: nut upsmon not observing it's config file

2008-05-01 Thread Al Grimstad
OK, I think I have a plausible hypothesis for my experience and a
configuration change that makes the annoying WALL messages go away.

First, although my battery is at 100% when I check is--and so the low
battery message seems wrong, there is something else going on. I have a
couple of things attached to the APC UPS and ups.load is very high. I
have the sense that when ups.load crossed over from the 60% area into
the 70% area a low battery condition was communicated to upsmon. If
this hypothesis is correct, this may be just a design characteristic,
not a driver bug.

Second, upsmon seems to have some defaults that I didn't understand. I had
commented out my normal LOWBATT configuration (NOTIFYFLAG LOWBATT
SYSLOG+WALL+EXEC)
to try to kill the WALL messages. That didn't work. What I ended up doing was
setting LOWBATT to NOTIFYFLAG LOWBATT SYSLOG. This seems to have worked.
There are now lowbatt messages in syslog, but no WALL messages.

So, the upshot of all this is that I think I should withdraw the bug
report. Sorry for sharing my learning experience with you. -- al

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS issue (was not resolved on #207441)

This is a very old and well known problem. See also
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=772774 and
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=293513highlight=cifs+vfs

I wonder why this bug is not fixed yet!

It has been proposed to change S31umountnfs.sh to K14umountnfs.sh in
/etc/rc0.d and /etc/rc6.d. For me that works fine, but I am not shure
that it can't create inconveniences in other cases. Please have a look
at this simple workaround whether it can be recommended.

[Bug 189616] Re: connection problems under load with hardy dovecot

2008-05-01 Thread Mathias Gug
After some discussions, it seems that the problem is related to the
login_max_processes_count option. The dapper version of dovecot wasn't
enforcing this limit - this would explain why the dapper backport was
working smoothly on hardy. Hardy version properly handles the
login_max_process_count option.

Moreover most of the clients are using imaps. According to
http://wiki.dovecot.org/LoginProcess, the imap-login process acts as an
SSL/TLS proxy in the case of ssl connections. Combined with the fact
that imap clients such as thunderbird are known to open more than one
imap connections, the maximum number of login processes can be hit with
less than 50 users connected at the same time.

I've attached a debdiff that logs a warning message when
login_max_process_count is hit and no -login processes can be freed. It
also add a note to the dovecot configuration.

Hi Thomas,

What version of libpam-smbpass do you have installed? This looks like a

[Bug 190818] Re: rhythmbox adding songs to ipod no sound

2008-05-01 Thread Matt Giuca
Ah so I just followed a chain of bugs to get myself a pretty good
workaround.

This bug seems only to happen for AAC encoding. Switch over to MP3.

This was problematic for me because I couldn't get CD Quality, MP3 to
appear in the dropdown list under Edit - Preferences - Music -
Preferred Format. You need to have Ubuntu packages BOTH liblame0 and

[Bug 224913] Re: update manager abort - resource temporarily unavailable

2008-05-01 Thread Richard Birnie
Thanks for reporting this. We really need more complete error messages
to find out what is wrong. If this error persists could you please paste
the contents of the terminal output into the bug report. At first glance
it looks like you have mis-typed the upgrade command.

apt-cache policy do-release-upgrade is not correct to start an upgrade. Please
check the instructions linked below for the recommended method

[Bug 224893] Re: Fullscreen games flicker in Ubuntu (GNOME only)

2008-05-01 Thread Luke has no name
** Description changed:

+ Update: I posted in bug #153204 for Compiz (Ubuntu). Confirmed that
+ Compiz deactivated fixes the problem. That doesn't mean the problem
+ isn't there...
+
  Using:

  Intel C2D 2180
  ATI HD 3870
  2GB Corsair RAM
  WD 320GB

Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit (Alternate Install CD) (Installed to disk AND using Wubi)
  Closed source ATI drivers

  Description:

When playing a game full screen (I've tried Nexuiz and Unreal Tournament
2004) in GNOME, the screen flickers, rather, part of the screen goes
black for an instant every second or two. This does not happen in
Openbox or XFCE (as installed from default Ubuntu, have not tested with
Xubuntu). This leads me to believe that it is a problem between
fullscreen games (the ATI driver?) and some package used only in GNOME.

[Bug 159421] Re: ATA exception on resume from sleep

2008-05-01 Thread Joss Winn
Hello,

I think I may be experiencing this or a similar bug. It's been
occurring on random occasions over the last few months when my Lenovo
3000 N100 laptop has been waking from Sleep under Hardy. I'm currently
running Hardy with the latest updates and it happened again this
morning.

On wake from sleep, I get a console screen with a very rapidly repeating
error message (transcribed - incomplete):

ata1.00: status {DRDY ERR}
   error {ABRT}
   exception Emask
   BMDMA
   CMD

I have to power off the machine to overcome this error.

Please let me know what else I can do to help. The problem is, that this
seems to occur randomly, so it's difficult to know when it will occur
next.

Thank you

[Bug 225101] [NEW] Not consistently following system colour schemes

2008-05-01 Thread Espen Grønvold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pgadmin3

Ubuntu release: 7.10
Program: pgAdmin III
Version: 1.4.3 (May 21 2007)

Using a dark colour scheme/gnome theme with light text causes text in
the data editor of pgAdmin3 to be unclear, since the program uses the
colour scheme for the text but not for the background.

It is drawing the table and editboxes in white, and because I use light
grey text in the current theme, it becomes almost unreadable. It is a
minor bug, one that could be solved by changing my gnome theme, but I
think this program should have an all or nothing approach to colour
schemes. Either implement it on all things, or on nothing.

As I suspect the text colour scheme is something that is implemented on
component level, and not necessarily something the programmers of this
project has anything to do with, it would be easier to implement colour
schemes/gnome themes on all element/custom elements in the program, and
leave the rest as is.

** Affects: pgadmin3 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

I was able to SOLVE the problem on my system. Playing movie in Totem
(which was playing in inverse colors) I opened Edit-Options, tab Video
and changed value of the last slider, Hue. Video plays in correct colors
if slider is set to min or max values, inverse colors are shown if
slider is in middle position. One note, initially the hue level (or at
least the slider) was set in leftmost position, I just had to move it.

[Bug 225046] Some additional observations

2008-05-01 Thread Veseto82
Hi again,

I've been trying to work out the problem that I have with Xen (without
any success :-() and started to think that it may *not* be related to
the *drm* module. If I boot the system with gdm disabled everything
works OK until I try starting the X server (with startx). Issuing startx
freezes the system exactly like before. I'm starting to think that the
problem is related to the kernel modules not working properly with the
xen kernel, initrd etc.

[Bug 224186] Re: detection of xrandr clone mode is wrong for single screens

2008-05-01 Thread weltall
yes i'm referring for before as official release package status and now as
after installing the package listed in proposed repository.
Exactly there is no second rectangle listed. The setup is done trough the
xorg.conf configuration in order to have two separate xscreens.
After some additional tests i noticed that if i launch gnome-display-properties
on the second monitor it can manage the second monitor but not the first one...
maybe it's just a side effect of my setup?
anyway the status before was worse (as detecting two screens as clone when one
is right of the other is plainly wrong) so it's an improvement anyway...

Same here, on a Dell XPS M1330, 64bit hardy as well. The problem has been

and other workarounds/debug/test procedures have been investigated there as
well.

I had a similar problem in Hardy.

When i tried to log out the computer frezze for about 1 minute. Durint
that time interval I could only press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace

I was only using GNONE without composite manager.. but previously in
feisty i was trying the new KDE.

Removing the whole .kde folder solved the problem .

I have no idea why some file in .kde were blocking the gnome-seesion

[Bug 225107] [NEW] can't boot with MMC socketed

Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04 (xubuntu) on dell Inspiron 700m. When my Lexar 512MB SD Card
is installed in the laptop's socket, the boot procedure does not finish.
I don't know how to capture the screen dump at this point - I'd take a
photo but the SD card in question is from my camera - catch-22! I recall
it's something about a timeout and hald. The system freezes - i.e. not
even the shift-lock indicator works any more. Removing the Sd card and
powercycling brings the machine back up. Inserting the card after boot
causes no problems, and it can be read (I haven't tried writing to it).

[Bug 224062] Re: Squashfs (?) errors during file copy (install phase)

2008-05-01 Thread Kari Poutiainen
Hmm, yes, with some google'ing around (keywords: squashfs zlib_inflate)
there seem to be lot of (more or less) similar issues, resulting in
and/or being caused by very similar SquashFS errors. Yet some (most)
have no problems with that.

So, is there anything that I could do to help pinpointing / isolating
the actual problem, or making it possible to reproduce it in laboratory
environment?

One idea that I had (not sure if it would help, or if it is even
possible to do) was to unsquash the installation disk beforehand, thus
eliminating SquashFS from the installation process Or would this mean
abadoning the whole installation process? (Still I myself might get a
working installation with this, but not sure whether it is worth the
effort)

In short, I am willing to help if there is anything that I can do here
:)

[Bug 102880] Re: Soundblaster live (emu10k1) only plays back sound output if multichannel playback is selected ; auto in gnome sound configuration doesn't work

2008-05-01 Thread rubinstein
What I do see is that now I can select ADC Capture/Standard PCM
Playback and it (somewhat) also works, and I can play multiple streams.

My solution was to install a small program to configure pulseaudio from
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4823171 - now it works. But
with an unaltered default install I don't hear any sound.

[Bug 224176] Re: After Places,Search thumbnails wrong

2008-05-01 Thread John Thomson
I found this problem as follows:-
1. Click on 'Places'
2. In the places panel, click on 'search for files'
3. In the Search for files panel insert 'name contains' Jpg and 'look in
folder' File system, click find.
4 In my system many jpg's are listed, often with incorrect thumbnails. ie the
thumbnail displayed
next to a filename is actually from a different file. There does not seem to be
much logic as to which incorrect
thumbnail is displayed, except that it is quite often the same incorrect
thumbnail.
Then click on an incorrect thumbnail and the correct
image is displayed by Eye of Gnome.

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-05-01 Thread Chris Cheney
This is most definitely a bug in the hard drive firmware settings in
how quickly it parks the head after being idle. It affects MacOS X and
Windows users along with Linux users in general not just Ubuntu. I have
found posts on other sites referencing the problems for their users as
well. The only thing those users were able to do about fixing the
problem was to turn off the power management completely by doing the
equivalent of hdparm -B 254 (setting the register to 0xFE). I have
included links below referencing the problem showing up on the other
OSes.

Completely disabling power management however will cause the head never
to park and if the system is jolted could potentially cause the hard
drive heads to crash into the platter. So 'fixing' this across the board
by disabling head parking altogether is not really a good solution
either.

Probably the only reason some users don't see this behavior under
Windows but do under Linux is that their Windows install probably never
allows the drive to be idle enough to park the head. This was the case
on my machine before I cleaned off the OEM install which had lots of
bloatware on it and reinstalled Vista from scratch, it would never stop
writing to the disk. Which would also mean if the drive is jolted too
hard it would crash as well. So no Windows doesn't have this problem
'fixed'.

My post on ubuntuforums.org about it:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4830919

MacOS X:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7055342

Windows:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=191167

So the ball is in the manufacturer's court in that they need to adjust
the head parking idle time to something more sensible, or at least
provide utilities that can allow the user to tweak the setting. Hitachi
for one does not provide this ability.

[Bug 223433] Re: openoffice, japanese vertical line is not supported.

2008-05-01 Thread Mitsuya Shibata
I confirmed it.

How to reproduce:
1. Launch OpenOffice.org Writer
2. Change font to VL Gothic
3. To enable SCIM, press Ctrl+Space
4. Input Japanese words (ex. abcあいうえおdef, left image)
5. To change writing direction to vertical, select Format - Page - Page tab
then change Text direction to Right-to-left (vertical), click OK
6. Japanese words are invisible (right image)

[Bug 225114] [NEW] 6.06 to 8.04 upgrade: no keyboard or mouse

2008-05-01 Thread Ian Johnston
Public bug reported:

I have tried to upgrade two machines running 6.06.1LTS to 8.04LTS.

1) IBM Thinkpad R40e - Pentium 4 2.4GHz

2) Elderly Viglen desktop - Pentium III 450MHz

using the alternate install CD in both cases. The upgrades went fine,
but on both machines neither keyboard nor mouse worked at the login
screen. After ctrl-alt-F1 the keyboard worked fine and xorg.conf seemed
perfectly straightforward with standard keyboard input.

In both cases a full install of 8.04 solved the problem.

[Bug 222663] Re: rme hdsp firmware is not loaded at system startup

2008-05-01 Thread Raphaël Doursenaud
On hardy, creating a simple symlink from
/lib/firmware/hdsploader/multiface_firmware_rev11.bin to
/lib/firmware/multiface_firmware_rev11.bin loads the firmware
automagically every time the module is loaded.

I think firmware helper don't seek in subdirectories.

Maybe this bug should be against udev's firmware helper or make the
firmwares go to /lib/firmware without subdirectories but this can have a
side effect on hdsploader and the such.

ndswrapper -r with the driver name)
- unload ndiswrapper (rmmod ndiswrapper)
- used package manager to remove ndiswrapper (search for ndiswrapper, mark the
two found ndiswrapper ones for removal)
- reboot
- insert gutsy cd, went to the two install packages from ndiswrapper and double
clicked them.
- insert driver to ndiswrapper (ndiswrapper -i)
- modprobe ndiswrapper
- reboot
- can see the wireless networks again, no luck in WPA mode.

Did I do something wrong? ( I still use the latest hardy kernel...)

[Bug 224966] Re: segfault in Xorg, gdm, compiz on scroll with firefox/webmail

2008-05-01 Thread Cinar Sahin
i might have to scroll due to my screen resolution (1280x1024). I also
confirmed the crash on my laptop running Hardy but has Nvidia NVS 140M.
Both are using the 169.12* drivers.

I also found the following message in the daemon.log:

May 1 00:48:29 -hostname gdm[7444]: WARNING:
gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0

I'm not sure why the title says the bug is not in ubuntu, I don't know
how to change it either...

[Bug 225118] [NEW] evince fails to print pdf files with images

2008-05-01 Thread John Wells
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy

evince 2.20.1-0ubuntu1

I've been unable to print .pdf files with images via CUPS. The print preview is
fine. I can print to a (.ps) file, but the printer output is just
   PCL XL error
  Subsystem: KERNEL
  Error: MissingData
  Operator: ReadImage
  Position: 7

The .pdf files were all generated from MS Word. They print fine from
Windows. Pages with no images are OK via CUPS. I can copy the images
from evince and paste them into Openoffice.org Writer, and they print
OK.

[Bug 225117] [NEW] [hardy] fsck died with exit error 8

2008-05-01 Thread kirini
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04 by update manager
hardware is following
Athlon XP 1800
nvidia fx5200
512 mb ram
DVD ROM
3 hdd
1.(sda) 3 partitions(ext3) + swap (total 40 gb)
2.(sdb) 1 partition(ext3) 80gb
3.(sdc) 1 partition(jsf) 120gb

in 7.10 all mounts worked from fstab
after upgrade first sdc1 caused that error 8, so I placed that line in comment.
system restarted fine.
now sdb1 causes same thing so i had to put that also commented(#)

manualy those mount commands wokr fine
fsck works ok, does not give any error when execute for problem partitions(when
they are not mounted)

I placed those mount lines in rc.local, but fstab should work since they
worked with 7.10

any questions or more details required, send me email

[Bug 185209] Re: [hardy] Manually Configuring Network Causes Massive, Unreversable, Failure

2008-05-01 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
The problem is that under GNOME it is not network-manager that sets
static configurations - it is gnome-system-tools... The question is
whether the KDE equivalent uses the same backend. Either way I doubt
network-manager is the right place for this bug...

[Bug 183943] Re: flashplugin-nonfree should include libflashsupport as a dependency

2008-05-01 Thread John Vivirito
They fixed the need for libflashsupport due to crashes with it. Without
libflashsupport you wont crash as much and the crashes are unrelated to
libflashsupport if its gone. Now PulseAudio and flash you will lose
sound the PulseAudio guys are working on this per bug #192888 so ntil
this is fixed we are leaving libflashsupport out due to the crashes.
Crashes are a higher priority as aposed to sound in flash.
