[Bug 304388] Re: Gratuitous file /etc/samba/gdbcommands

2009-01-16 Thread era
I spent a lot of time investigating this, and would have avoided that if
it had been documented. I'd still like to request the addition of a
small snippet to README.Debian but since I'm an Ubuntu user I didn't
want to take this directly upstream. If I submit this upstream, with a
small patch, can I change this to confirmed wishlist?

[Blueprint improved-power-management] Improved Power Management

2009-01-16 Thread Arnaud Quette
Blueprint changed by Arnaud Quette:

Whiteboard changed to:

* Powerman - PDU support (http://powerman.sourceforge.net/):
  - Debian ITP (done)
  - Debian package upload (mostly done, upload underway)
  - Ubuntu sync (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/315637, waiting)

* Network UPS Tools - NUT:
  - DeviceKit-power integration (postponed for 2.4.1)
  - dummy-ups repeater mode (communication link redundancy and forwarding)
(done, trunk)
  - base PDU support (~6 SNMP units) (done, trunk)
  - extended PDU support, through libpowerman (~ 20 units) (done, trunk)
- configuration improvements: provide some library / backend to develop a
config wizard (python and/or debconf). configuration is definitely NUT's
weakest point, apart from the HAL/DK-p backends! (postponed for 2.6 ; work
started on Augeas lens)
  - sub devices (present UPS' outlets as devices, to allow per outlet
subscription and management) (postponed for 2.4.1 or 2.6)
  - virtual devices (composite devices, made of several UPSs (parallel, serial
or sequential redundancy modes) and/or PDUs) (postponed)

[Bug 305393] Re: Please upgrade php5 to new upstream version 5.2.8

2009-01-16 Thread ep
My apologies if this is not the appropriate place to ask, but how can I
upgrade to php 5.2.8 with apt-get if I have 5.2.6 installed? I am new
to the deb package system and am being impacted by a bug in 5.2.6. I
have added Ari's two URL's to my sources.list, but I have been
unsuccessful figuring out the upgrade procedure. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks!

[Bug 317784] [NEW] network manager loses preferred networks up upgrade from hardy to intrepid

2009-01-16 Thread paulv
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

1.) lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

2.) apt-cache policy network-manager
network-manager:
  Installed: 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1.8.10.1
  Candidate: 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1.8.10.1
  Version table:
 *** 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1.8.10.1 0
500 http://ftp.ussg.indiana.edu intrepid-updates/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://ftp.ussg.indiana.edu intrepid/main Packages

3.) While my system was running Hardy, I had a number of preferred
networks/ssids that network-manager would automatically connect to if
they were detected, and would prompt me for the password to unlock the
saved WEP/WPA/etc passwords/keys if necessary. Upon upgrading to
Intrepid, network-manager seems to have lost the list of preferred
networks. Using gconf editor, I can see that the version of network-
manager in Hardy stored its configuration information in
/system/networking/wireless/networks/ssid. In the Intrepid version,
network-manager appears to store this data in
/system/networking/connections/n/ where n appears to increase as the
number of networks I connect to increase.

My expectation upon upgrading to Intrepid is that network-manager would
continue to use the list of preferred networks/ssids that were
established in Hardy.

4.) I have to re-associate with the preferred networks, which sometimes
requires re-inputting previously saved WEP/WPA/etc passwords/keys. In
some cases, this is quite annoying as I've, frankly, forgotten what the
passwords are.

nor gave me the opportunity to remove sensitive information before it
was submitted). I will be happy to provide a sanitized version if

2009-01-16 Thread JoseLVG
Wow!

Luciano: That is backports for Jaunty 9.04or just plain Ibex 8.10?
(I guess you need a 2.6.28 kernel anyway)

What it your chipset?
I wonder if my eee 901 with Intel GME 945 will benefit from this improvement
also.

Still 700FPS is less than half the 1500FPS this driver achieved in the good
old TTM days, so I wonder how it is GEM an improvement or if there are
still many performance gains to come.

[Bug 317786] [NEW] ln inode problem in 8.10?

2009-01-16 Thread mic 987
Public bug reported:

As a newbie i installed ubuntu 8.10, systemupdate, atidrivers for
mobility x700, installed and configured wine for glide and video-memsize
and half-life including patch 1.6 well working then, gnome-commander and
krusader, too. Then i asked to get a shortcut named C: ohne the gnome-
desktop to my .wine folder in ubuntuusers.de and got the answer: ln -s
.wine/drive_c Desktop/Wine-C .

So i created a working shortcut, nautilus showed files properly but wine
did not load half-life as before, worked on hdd for a few seconds but no
effort and no report. After shutdown and restart x-server was not
loading, many problems to get back with an older kernel.

Now i read about problems with programms like trueimage depending on
inode-problems. So my hint to check the ln-function (and maybe other)
using changed inode-structures in 8.10, too.

Best wishes
michael

[Bug 287413] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in hwlIconUpload()

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Ubuntu release: 8.10 Beta
  Version of package: xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu2

Tried to enable FGLRX driver again after an apparent update today
(noticed fglrx package being updated by the update manager). However it
still failed (X fails to start and finally boots into failsafe X), and
this is the crash report as a result. This bug report is therefore
  related to/a dupliate of #286140.

[Bug 303697] Re: [fglrx] video tearing / vsync problems

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

Videos tear when I play them with xv extension. I enabled vsync with
Catalyst Control Center and running 'aticonfig --initial
--input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf --overlay-type=Xv', but the video still
tears. I tried several Xorg.conf settings but without any improvement.
Removing Xorg.conf does not change anything.

I have this problem since Hardy with a Radeon HD 3650. Even Windows XP
with Catalyst driver tears. Some time ago I switched to a Radeon HD 4670
(see lspci-vvnn.log), but even this card tears.

The videos tear and do not flicker. This bug also occurs with Compiz
  disabled.

Maybe this problem have something to do with the on-board Intel
Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 of the Intel DG33TL [1] mainboard.

Bug 243451 is said to be fixed (the packages are built for all
architectures except ia64). That means that a new version of x264 is
available now in Jaunty. Maybe that helps with this bug?

the binaries are not available in the archive yet. A new upload of
ffmpeg is necessary anyway to build against the new x264.

[Bug 296497] Re: [fglrx] HD3200 has random lockups due to cpu intensity via xorg/compiz. [AMD Feature#7647] [EPR#260338]

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

On ATI Radeon HD3200 (Foxconn (Bengal) RS780 Integrated), compiz causes
regular lockups (sometimes random) when it drives up cpu intensity.
These locks are soon resolved after about 1 second or more or less. But
always come back when cpu goes up.

top reports xorg drives up to over 80% CPU when firefox merely scrolls.

This only happens when compiz is enabled, not when fglrx itself is
enabled. Compiz people said that it was a driver problem, so reporting
  here.

This is NOT AN INSTALLER ISSUE, it installs fine. Launchpad says there's
no page xorg-driver-fglrx when I try to choose it for bug reporting.

[Bug 287229] Re: fglrx crashes when setting certain video options [EPR#260347]

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

   *** 2:8.543-0ubuntu2 0
  500 http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de intrepid/multiverse Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

When I installed Intrepid alpha I tried to move my old configuration file
/etc/X11/xorg.conf to the new intrepid install.
These options which were used to speed up video and reduce tearing and some
other video improvments included this option (in the Device Section):
  Option TexturedXRender 1

I cam around, that as sonn as i added that option, my log in screen
would flicker for about 1s and then die (with 1px blue vertical lines
and ~30px yellow lines) and then a long blackscreen which will
  stayuntill you reboot.

The only option to reset these things is to set the option to zer0, and
update /etc/ati/amd...
  is to use thsi command:
  sudo aticonfig --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf --tls=1

I think it shouldn't be the case that TexturedXRender should prevent any
user from graphically logging in, aswell as the option is required to
watch movies/TV on your PC (as I do sometimes).

[Bug 105545] Re: HUAWEI E220/E620 no longer works in Feisty/Hardy

I'm having if not the same a very similar behavior with a Novatel PCMCIA
3G card with Gutsy, Hardy and Ibex. The card is working 100% in a Acer
4520 Laptop ( AMD Athlon with ATI chipset ) but in a desktop witha
ASROCk AM2NF6G-VSTA with a PCI to PCMCIA adator ENE CB1410 Cardbus
controller just disconnects randomly but certainly after 2 or 10 minutes
.

The issue apears with in Gutsy or 8.10 before and after all the upgrades.
The constant I can see is the disconnection of course and ...

The Cardbus adaptor seems to be working fine with other PCMCIA devices,
but with the Novatel 3G card just keeps disconnecting.

I have tryed many other generic workarounds like passing parameters to
the kernel at boot time disabling ACPI or irqpol and so on... but the
only result is that the computer just freeze.

I not sure if this is the right place to report this bug but I couldn
find the exact problem with this exact hardware configuration in
launchpad, I did found it in general help forums but nobody seems to
have an answer for it.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 314792] Re: revert to clone after monitor poweroff / screensaver

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

After installing the ubuntu fglrx driver, I set up my two monitors with
dual-screen. It works perfectly, up until I either turn one of the
monitors off by pressing the power button, or by leaving it idle until
the screen saver pops up. When either of those 2 actions happens, fglrx
reverts back to clone mode. If I reboot the machine, it stays in dual-
  screen mode just fine.

When I look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log when I power off the monitor, nothing
  pops up.

If you need anything else (first time reporting a bug) let me know.

try pressing a few keys. See attached logfile for a serial-console
  stacktrace.

Interestingly enough, fglrx reports itself as version 8.56.4, which
seems a bit mismatched from the package version number 8.561. In
addition, using the official ATI installer to buildandinstallpkg
Ubuntu/intrepid within the Intrepid LiveCD gives the same result.

[Bug 313294] Re: MPlayer causes X lockup on fglrx

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

Using the gl2 output, gmplayer sometimes (not always, but annoyingly often)
causes an X lockup when its window is restored (de-minimized, or clicked to the
foreground from behind another window). The whole screen will freeze, with only
a black rectangle showing where the MPlayer window is supposed to be. At first
I thought the whole system was hung, but I've discovered that there are
Alt+SysRq+.. combinations that still work even when regular Ctrl+Alt+Del
doesn't anymore.
So, today I was checking some log files after rebooting from such a crash,
and hey, what do you know, there is some kind of error/trace in
/var/log/messages (attached).

[Bug 311204] Re: sysfs: duplicate filename 'vcsa1' can not be created

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Continuing the reports from
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/196409

I reported the bug for 2.6.27-10... then i had removed the fglrx driver that
i had installed via envy-ng and it booted correctly again.
I switched to the Ubuntu fglrx a week ago. it worked, even though i used the
laptop rarely.

Today it the bug occured again a few times, but this time it does'nt
stop at 32000 any more, but resets to 0 and keeps on with the udevd
messages... the system doesn't allow switching consoles but reacts to
  ctrl-alt-del with a clean reboot.

  first i tried:
booting into 2.6.27-11-generic rescue mode - worked. choosing resume ended in
the endless message loop again.

  second:
booted into rescue more, fixed the X server and rebooted: success!

so i will not touch the fglrx for a while and stay with the default open
source driver. this is a sad situtation, but as an owner of an ATI
graphics card i am used to a lot of problems ;-)

OK.. i hope this helps in finding the bug.

[Bug 309638] Re: [fglrx] resume from stand by / hibernate fails on Intrepid 64 on 4GB of RAM

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Information on the configuration

  Computer Specs:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Satellite-A210-16F/135223/
Computer modifications: 4GB RAM, 320 GB HDD
Ubuntu Flavor: Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (x86-64)
Identically affects: Ubuntu Hardy Heron (x86-64)
  Kernel: 2.6.27-9-generic

  Information on the problem

Installing the fglrx restricted driver causes the computer to hang after
a stand by or hibernate, and demands a hard reboot. X won't display
anything, consoles are not accessible, even ssh dies.

After some research I found out that there was a similar problem were
people were completely unable to use their desktop when running Ubuntu
64 with fglrx on 4GB of RAM, so I tested with only 2GB of ram
(physically and with boot option mem=2G) and stand by (hibernate) works
fine. With boot option mem=3G I get the same problematic behavior.

My mtrr table feels wrong (on the fact that it does not display anywhere
256M which I believe is my actual graphics memory), but I don't really
know if this has anything to do with the problem or how to properly
  manipulate it.

[Bug 308267] Re: x11 crashes durring screensaver

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

When my system goes to screensaver x11 crashes, but not every time.

  Current system:
  Ubuntu 8.10 (gnome)
  Dell optiplex 745
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon x1950 pro
  Dual Screen Monitors

  Common applications I run are:
  Eclipse (ganymede)
- I build and run an java application using swing, and jogl.
  Firefox 3.0.4
  Evolution
  Amarok
  Gnome Terminal
  gedit
  Screensaver - Euphoria

I've attached a copy of my xorg log.

When the crash occurs I can only restart my x server by restarting my
computer. Also after the crash occurs my computer ends up on a display
that looks like the system is starting up, but it does not make it to
the login screen. I am able to switch to a different virtual login, but
not able to restart the x server. This problem probably occurs about
every 10-15 times it goes to screensaver.

** Description changed:

  hello,

I've installed fglrx from repos. It installs and works, but I get awefully
low performance. I think I found the problem, which is showed in CCC :
  http://img220.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cccgc5.png
It's in polish, but as you can see it reports that my HD4850 is using fglrx
but OpenGL is from mesa. Although, fglrxinfo shows :
  display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (2.1.8087 Release

So it seems like it should be ok, but in q3 I get like 70 fps instead of
1k+, and I cant even start etqw cause of segfaults.

[Bug 302219] Re: problems with fglrx on kernel 2.6.27-10 generic

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

I have not been able to get a graphical display since 2.6.27.8-generic. In
other words, I can not start a X sessions. The
problem is related to the appropriate ATI driver for 2.6.27-10 and *-11
kernels. Something seems not to be working. I am used to see this thing happen,
since I suffered a similar problem on 8.04. So, while booting, I choose to
continue working on 2.26.7-8 up to the point where the driver is compatible
with a new kernel version. It seems that this problem is inherent to ATI cards,
more than nvidia ones.

[Bug 316206] Re: X fglrx driver doesn't do 3D acceleration with v2.4.1-0ubuntu9

[Bug 289762] Re: crashes if I disconnect my drawing tablet while it is open

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gimp

  Ubuntu 8.10
  gimp 2.6.1-1ubuntu3

  Steps to reproduce:
  * Hotplug a wacom tablet using the new hotplugging support in intrepid (i.e.
no inputdevice settings in xorg.conf, just relying on the default HAL rules in
/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/10-wacom.fdi)
  * Start GIMP and make a new image, draw something with the tablet which
should work fine
  * turn off / unplug the tablet
  * use your mouse to move the cursor from outside of the GIMP window to inside
it

expected GIMP acts as it would normally if the tablet was not
  connected

actual result GIMP crashes, no error dialog or anything

running GIMP from a terminal gives this message:

The program 'gimp' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device'.
(Details: serial 314305 error_code 168 request_code 148 minor_code 30)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 277069] Re: Java slow on remote X

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  I've submitted this bug as
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17868 as well. Though the
problem may not be in ia32-libs -package, it contains the
/usr/lib32/libX11.so.6.2.0 library that appears to be somehow relevant
  to the problem at hand.

Some Java applications, such as the trial version in
http://www.typingmaster.com/, run unusably slow when used over a remote
  X connection.

I'm using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1 with LTSP5, Linux kernel 2.6.24-19-server,
with 32-bit firefox and 32-bit Java-plugin. The relevant package
  versions are here:

  firefox32 2.0.0.17
  sun-java32 1.6.0.5
  sun-java6-jre 6-06-0ubuntu1
  ia32-libs 2.2ubuntu11

The issue does not appear to be Java-version related (it exists in 1.5
and 1.6 versions). I have not tested the very latest Java-versions
though. The reason I'm reporting this as a possible XCB-related issue
is that one can workaround the problem by using an X11-library that does
  not link to XCB.

In current Ubuntu version (Hardy), /usr/lib32/libX11.so.6.2.0 library
  links to /usr/lib32/libxcb-xlib.so.0 and /usr/lib32/libxcb.so.1
libraries, XCB version is 1.1. In previous Ubuntu version (Gutsy) the
X11-library does not do this. When the new library shared object
replaced with the old one, the problem disappears, and Java applications
  that had problems run fine.

There may be some other differences between the X11-libraries, but using
XCB as an underlying implementation seems to be a major change, or is
it? All other applications do not appear to have these problems, Java
applications appear to be the sole source of these problems.

I'm adding two attachments that show tshark-dump of network traffic in
both cases, perhaps it helps to analyze the issue. What happens there
is one keypress on typingmaster Java-version, on Hardy/XCB case it takes
half a minute to process one keypress and switch a screen, on Gutsy/no-
XCB case it takes maybe a second.

[Bug 155226] Re: [nvidia]tearing artifacts in window effects, videos

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

I have an Nvidia 7600GT card, with the nvidia-glx-new drivers, using
  compiz.

I've noticed that window effects, the most trivial of which is dragging
the window around with by the title bar, causes tearing artifacts like
you'd see if you needed to start double-buffering. Tearing also happens
in videos, or other apps that update a lot (screen savers etc).

Installing compizconfig-settings-manager, going into the General
screen, and enabling sync to vblank fixes this.

[Bug 252767] Re: Ubuntu won't login

2009-01-16 Thread Chris Coulson
The files contain no trace of a crash, and so they aren't much use. The
crash should leave a trace at the end of one of the log files. Without
it, there is absolutely nothing we can do, which is why I closed the
report. Also, we need a full backtrace really so that the bug can be
sent upstream. A full backtrace can be obtained by following the steps
at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing

[Bug 151771] Re: nvidia tv out black white, while setting pal-g, due to starting with dual-head on lcd+crt

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

  When I define in xorg.conf that I start X with dual-head on my LCD+CRT,
my TV is black-white (like sending NTSC, while it needs to be PAL-B)
when I switch monitors with nvidia-settings.

I normally work with dual head on my LCD and old CRT monitor. Sometimes
I want to watch a movie and start nvidia-settings to switch my CRT-
output to TV-Output, but for some reason, the output get blurry and
black and white. Nvidia does not output to PAL-B.

However, when I define in xconf.org that I start X with LCD+TV the
screen is in color (so PAL-B).

So the problem is that I cannot dynamically switch my display-output. I
first have to log-out, edit my xorg.conf en then log back in, because
you cannot change the TVStandard from nvidia-settings.

My xorg.conf looks like this for starting with TV-out

  # Option metamodes CRT: 1024x768 +1280+0, DFP:

[Bug 148345] Re: Averatec 2150 ATI x200 fglrx Edgy Feisty Gutsy Screen Flicker

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

I have a problem with my Averatec 2150 (aka MSI MS-1030 / MSI Megabook
S270) and it's ATI x200 video chipset. The screen has a very annoying
flicker. I started using Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy back in Nov 2006. In Jan 07 I
switched to Kubuntu 6.10 and the problem seemed to get worse. Since May
I've been battling Feisty with this problem. I haven't installed Gutsy,
but ran the live cd and the problem was still there. The default
drivers loaded with all versions of Ubuntu cause the problem.

I have tried several different versions of the ATI Proprietary drivers
on fresh installs of Ubuntu. I have tried the default Ubuntu fglrx
drivers. I have tried different modelines for the 1280x800 lcd screen as
  suggested by this site

I have seen a few posts in the Ubuntu Forums about changing the sideport
memory for the video card in the bios to use system ram. The only
option I have for the video ram is the size (ie 32-128 mb). There is no
mention of sideport. I am at a loss here. Is there anyone with something
else that I could try? Here's some info:

  uname -a: Linux mozz-laptop 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Fri Aug 31 00:55:27

[Bug 144014] Re: [nvidia-glx-new] Power down gives a garbled screen

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: compiz

WIth desktop effects enabled, when shutting down the machine, I don't
get the progress bar as usual, but instead I just get a messed up
version of my desktop background, with lots of lines and garbled colors.
The machine shuts down properly, but it looks really weird and
  potentially scary/confusing to users.

[Bug 137152] Re: resume after suspend + gnome or X session progressivly irresponsive

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-new

Resuming from suspend seems to goes OK, gnome session is restored and
applications loads in the same state they where before shutdown, but
when providing user interaction with the gnome destop, X-session or
gnome became progressively irresponsive and finaly only mouse movements
are possible. Ctrl+alt+backspace effectively kills the session, but once
relogged inside gnome, same problems occurs again. Hard reboot fixes the
  issue.

  steps of irresponsiveness :
  - Icon on the destop (no contextual menu)
  - Programms does not launch
  - Windows closing inefeectivce

[Bug 118808] Re: Unable to reach C3/C4 states while wireless is up.

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

While using GUTSY daily build 05-JUN-2007, with powertop 1.5 installed,
I noticed that my computer was in the C2 power-saving state for an
average of 95%+ of the time, and was not able to reach the battery-
friendly C3 and C4 states. After some experimentation, I realized that
this problem was caused by the wireless interface just being up, **even
when not associated to any Access Point**. Just issuing 'ifconfig ath0
down', or disabling wireless in the Network Manager applet, would allow
the computer to reach C3/C4 just fine, increasing my battery time
  significantly.

[Bug 317788] [NEW] Unrelated results after a search

2009-01-16 Thread Graeme
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

If I search by Subject, the results that Thunderbird returns is not
related to my search text. It returns emails or newsgroup postings that
don't even have the search text in the subject. The same goes for search
by Message Body (offline newsgroup postings) or by To field.

So for me the search feature in Thunderbird is totally useless and unusable.
It doesn't matter how I invoke the search
  * Edit | Find | Search Message...
  * Right click on Folder or Newsgroup | Search Message...
  * Search box in toolbar
The results are always unrelated to the search term!

I have tried this on my work PC and my Home PC, and both return the same
rubbish results.

I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.18 (under Linux). Ubuntu 7.10 with most
updates applied.

I'll try and attach a screenshot which shows the problem. In the
screenshot you will see I am searching by Subject for text containing
what I entered tree build. And if you look at the search results.
Not a single resulting message has the term tree build in the Subject
line!

[Bug 232012] Re: restricted nvidia driver fails after upgrade to kubuntu 8.04

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

I am using an Nvidia Geforce2 MX400 on Kubuntu with Ubuntu metapackage
installed too. Worked fine in Feisty and Gutsy.
I upgraded from Gutsy with the restricted driver removed. After, the screen
looked slightly shifted to the left (start button), and found the card was was
set to vesa. I discovered the Hardware Drivers Manager in the System menu
and selected the restricted driver.
After a reboot I got dumped at the console. It complained displayconfig-gtk
was not installed, so I apt-get to install. After another reboot I got a VGA
screen with the displayconfig dialog. The dialog shows only vesa, and driver
available open source and greyed out.
I can select the geforce2 card, but this seems to be ignored. Monitor is
shown correctly, but Resolution allows 800x600 only. After a reboot it logged
in with correct maximum resolution 1024x768, card vesa, driver nv, restricted
driver has been deselected by the system.

I read about installing linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-xx-386 manually
so I did this and got different behavior. Now if I select resticted
driver and reboot, I get the displayconfig dialog. It correctly detects
the card, but not the monitor. So I select it manually, set the
resolution and get dumped in the console. Reboot and its back the
displayconfig but the card is vesa again.

I know you cant use dpkg reconfigure-xserver xorg any more, so thats me
  stuck!

Please let me know what info is required to track this bug.

[Bug 179574] Re: No display (blank screen) on log out

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

On log out or switch user, my screen often goes blank, with my monitor
displaying an error message as if it's being fed wrong
resolution/refresh info. Boot up is fine, happens only on log out and
switch user. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace sometimes works to bring back GDM,
however it also often results in a corrupted image (wrong resolution,
visual noise). Sometimes the only solution is to hard reboot the
computer. This happens with GDM and KDM.

It's difficult for me to tell what package is causing the bug. I have
had a similar issue in Feisty, but It wasn't nearly as severe. At this
point a multi-user setup in a gui environment is impossible with
GDM/KDM. I did find that I don't experience these issues when using XDM
  as the login manager.

I can confirm that this happens to me with an Nvidia GeForce 6200 A-LE,
with the nv or nvidia driver, regardless of desktop effects.

Please let me know whatever config/log files I need to supply to help
resolve this issue for future releases!

[Bug 192407] Re: Thinkpad T61 crashes on resume from suspend

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Hello,

I would like to report a bug that sometimes (in about 10% of cases)
inhibits wakeup from suspend of my Thinkpad T61 8889-2BG. I am using
Ubuntu 7.10. This bug occurs with the standard kernel as well as with a
self compiled vanilla kernel (2.6.24.2) patched with thinkpad-acpi.
There is another bug while waking up from suspend in the standard kernel
(notebook needs several key presses and trackpoint as well as trackpad
movements to wake up) but this bug seems to be solved in 2.6.24.2.
Therefore, I am only reporting the bug that persists in 2.6.24.2:

The notebook suspends without any problems at all times. However,
sometimes (about 10% of cases) after opening the lid or pressing the
power button when the notebook is suspended, the moon stays lit, the
battery LED and the power LED are turned on, the harddisk starts to
spin, but then nothing else happens. The screen stays dark and there is
no harddisk activity. Then, I have to power off the notebook and
restart. The recommended DebuggingKernelSuspend method produces the
  following messages in dmesg:

  [1.864000] Using IPI No-Shortcut mode
  [1.864000] Magic number: 0:35:998
  [1.864000] hash matches
/build/buildd/linux-source-2.6.22-2.6.22/drivers/base/power/resume.c:57
  [1.864000] hash matches device ttyae
  [1.868000] hash matches device 00:00
[1.868000] Freeing unused kernel memory: 364k freed

With kernel version 2.6.24.2 the messages are as follows:

  [ 28.217234] Using IPI No-Shortcut mode
  [ 28.217367] Magic number: 0:865:403
  [ 28.217368] hash matches drivers/base/power/main.c:97
[ 28.217599] Freeing unused kernel memory: 340k freed

As the unreliability of suspending renders this feature completely
useless I would be very grateful if someone could help me to solve the
problem. Please let me know if you need any further information.

  Many thanks in advance!

  Karl Martin

[Bug 158355] Re: Visual artifacts when scrolling up on networked 'nedit' window

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

Networked 'nedit' sessions display textual artifacts when scrolling
up. The best way I can describe the artifacts is that groups of text
lines are repeated throughout the window.

  Steps to reproduce:

  ssh -Y somecomputer
nedit somefile.txt --- do this on the remote computer

When nedit opens, scroll down to the middle of some text, then scroll
up with either the mouse scroll wheel or using the keyboard up arrow to
  see the visual artifacts.

I have tried this with several remote computers all with different
operating systems and different versions of nedit.

If I run nedit locally on my machine, these artifacts do not occur.

Also, I never had this problem before updating my computer from Feisty
to Gutsy last week. I also tried using a different text editor remotely
(xemacs), but this did not suffer the same problems.

My computer is running Kubuntu (Gutsy), with two monitors and an NVIDIA
  video card.

[Bug 118458] Re: Acer Aspire 1510LMi won't go to sleep or hibernate

2009-01-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  The symptoms are:

-sleep : shows some messages in console mode about going to sleep, then the
display shows all sorts of colors and lines, and after a second or two it
enters the sleep state. When pressing any key, i again get some sleep messages
in console mode (no errors though), and then the screen blanks with the
backlight still on, and the hard drive led blinking from time to time. In this
state nothing short of a hard shutdown seems to work: mouse, keyboard, closing
the lid does nothing. It just sits with the black screen, eating up CPU cycles
( i know this by the sound of my noisy CPU cooler) with hard drive led blinking
from time to time.
One thing is strange though: if I am to play some media file while putting it
to sleep, like an mp3 or something, on waking up, while on that blank screen,
the media seems to continue playing, although with pauses, like 4-5 seconds
playing, 2-3 seconds pause, and so on.

-hibernate : it seems to shutdown and save the data correctly (i can't
tell because i don't know where to look) but when resuming i again get a
blank screen, and a flashing power led.

  Linux thor-laptop 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Wed May 23 01:46:23 UTC 2007
  i686 GNU/Linux

dmesg and lspci -vvnn output attached.

[Bug 317035] Re: [INTREPID]not shutdown with laptop asus x50 gl

What about the possibility to use hal to deal with the right hardware: by
