[Bug 1877401] Re: The Italian translation is not complete

2020-05-07 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi,

to be honest I'm not sure why this has untranslated strings.
Upstream is complete, and this one has been correctly imported in Launchpad:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince

and has no untranslated strings.

[Bug 1877402] Re: The Italian translation is not complete

2020-05-07 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi,

the Italian translation is complete upstream:

https://l10n.gnome.org/vertimus/simple-scan/gnome-3-36/po/it/

and it has been at least since GNOME 3.34.

As far as I can tell, there should not be any differences between upstream
GNOME and Ubuntu.
Of note is that the last updated Italian translation available in Launchpad
appears to be from 2018.

I'm not really keen on updating the translation on Launchpad, since they
should be synced automatically with upstream.

[Bug 1758956] [NEW] Upstream translation not imported/synced

2018-03-26 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

There has been a similar report recently, but I'm not sure if it was the
exact same one.

If I look at the POT template for simple-scan it looks like it is up to
date with the upstream one: same strings count, same strings.

The PO file though doesn't seem to have been imported, at least for the
Italian language. The last changed date in Launchpad is set to
2016-03-15, but the upstream translation for the 3.28 cycle has been
completed (and it was complete also for the 3.26 cycle).

A few links to check things out:

* The Launchpad Italian translation:
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/bionic/+source/simple-scan/+pots/simple-scan/it/+translate
* The upstream Italian translation:
https://l10n.gnome.org/vertimus/simple-scan/master/po/it

Upstream hasn't branched 3.28 yet, so I wonder if this is just a matter
of waiting for a new release to be imported in Launchpad.

On a side note: simple-scan doesn't seem to be the only package with
this "problem" (template in sync with upstream, but not the actual
translations). I could see at least evolution-data-server, and gnome-
online-accounts.

[Bug 1312401] Re: Filter type names incorrect after upgrade to 14.04 and results don't correspond to the selected types

2015-03-01 Thread Milo Casagrande
I approved string 15 on the unity-scope-home for Italian, but it is
still not clear to me how those strings are used in unity.

Since they look pretty similar to GNOME strings that are used to provide
search terms, usually we translate them in the same way. Meaning that
original words have to be kept in order to provide search terms.

From what I gather from this bug report, those strings are not used in
that way (each word appears to be a positional value). If that's the
case, I would suggest to add translator comments for those strings with
instructions on how they are used and how they should be treated.

Can you please be more specific and ponit where that string come from?
The only translatable packages regarding policykit in Ubuntu 13.04 are these:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/+source/policykit-1
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/+source/policykit-1-gnome

and they do not include that string. The language-selector package is
also fully translated (at least in Italian), and it does not contain
that string either.

[Bug 1191736] [NEW] Preferences editing not available

2013-06-17 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 13.04 and gtranslator version 2.91.6-0ubuntu1, when I
launch it I do not have all the menu entries available.

Gtranslator is missing:
- Help main menu
- Edit → Preferences menu

Without the preferences menu it is not possible to edit translation
profiles, to manually add files to the translation memory, activate
plugins, and many other things. Also, looks like default plugins are not
enabled.

Everything seems to work correctly under gnome-shell, but not under
Unity.

I get the same output errors as in bug 1088189, but the end result looks like
is slightly different.
As a reference, this is the output I get:

[Bug 1119195] [NEW] _DummyThread' object has no attribute '_Thread__block

2013-02-08 Thread Milo Casagrande

Deploying a Python based web-app, in the output logs we are seeing a lot
of messages like this:

Exception AttributeError: AttributeError('_DummyThread' object has no
attribute '_Thread__block',) in module 'threading' from

[Bug 1053846] [NEW] Same translatable string used in different contexts

2012-09-21 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

While going through the translation in software-center, I found one
string, that is usually hard to translate correctly without a little
bit of context, that is being used in three different contexts, with at
least two different meanings.

The translatable string is: Free.

The string already has translator comments before, but unfortunately
this is not enough. The same string looks like is used in 4 different
files, and has 2 different meanings, at least looking at the translator
comments before.

The problem is that Launchpad is showing us only 1 translatable string,
instead of at least 2.

The translator comments used are:
TRANSLATORS: Free here means Gratis
TRANSLATORS: Free here means Libre
TRANSLATORS: Free here means Gratis

The strings are located in the following files:
 ../softwarecenter/db/application.py:607
../softwarecenter/db/application.py:622
../softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/views/appdetailsview.py:402
../softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/views/appdetailsview.py:691

It would be best to use msgctxt: the problem being if Python 2.7
supports it out-of-the-box.

[Bug 988258] Re: Cartella home label in launcher needs to be named 'Cartella Home'

2012-05-07 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello,

as suggested in another bug, I kindly invite you to discuss these issues
directly on the translators mailing list.

With particular reference to this issue, it has been discussed quite a
lot, and is a controversial one. It is not a real bug, there is not a
real error in the translation, and has been suggested quite often to
change its translation. It is not a rather easy task too, since we
cannot change it directly in Ubuntu, we have to work with upstream
(Gnome in particular).

I'm leaving this bug open, and I will bring this discussion up again on
the translators mailing list. I suggest you to subscribe to the mailing
list if you want to take part into this discussion.

Ciao.

[Bug 966489] Re: dash label caption is home!!

2012-04-25 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello,

we discussed this issue on the translator mailing list a while ago
(discussion around February and March), and we decided to use only
Home for that tooltip. The rationale behind that choice is that it is
the entry point of all of the Dash functionalities, and of all the
Lenses, it is the starting point for using Ubuntu and Unity. The
problem, as was raised by other people was that the first translation
Home della Dash, was ugly. After that, we switched to use a simple
and general Home.

I understand that someone might find this strange, but after some discussions
we decided to take that path.
I'm marking this as invalid, since it is not a real bug nor a translation error.

Thank you.

[Bug 923345] [NEW] Wrong use of quotes in translatable string

2012-01-29 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Hello,

there is a translatable string in the source tree of jockey that is
using quotes in a inconsistent way, resulting in a wrong translatable
string.

This is how the translators see it:
Cannot connect to D-BUS,+ please use the --no-dbus option as root to+ use
jockey without it.

The source code is using single quotes and double quotes mixed together not
correctly.
String is locate in 'jockey/ui.py'.

[Bug 869940] [NEW] Strings from other domains show untranslated

Public bug reported:

Hi,

through the Update manager. I guess these strings are handled by the
aptdaemon package, if not, apologise for reporting this bug directly to
this product.

untranslated. The strings should come from apt and/or dpkg templates.

[Bug 857136] [NEW] Change password dialog not fully translated

2011-09-23 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Hi,

while using Oneiric Beta, I tried to change the default keyring password
using seahorse (Passwords and Keys application in the Dash).

The dialog that comes up if you right-click on the default keyring and
choose to change the password, looks like is coming from gnome-keyring,
since that strings there are in the gnome-keyring template. Not all of
those strings are translated, albeit them being already translated since
a while and also shipped with Ubuntu.

[Bug 764744] Re: [UIFe] Add system setting icon to Launcher

2011-09-16 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello,

from a translator point of view, not expressing the Translators Team
will: how many translatable strings will this patch add? And, when is
the expected deadline for translating those strings?

Since it will have a visual impact on users, it is necessary those are
translated in time for being included: are those strings part of the
non-langpack deadline? If so, that means translators will have more ore
less 10 days if the patch is ready and the new strings are imported in a
really fast way (the translation queue in this period can be quite busy,
but we might monitor it and approve the template to speed it up).

Just to have a better idea of the impact and the time-table we could
face.

Thank you for your attention.

Yes, but as another string in the same file, you cannot find it in the

Even the string that starts with:

The only string that I can find in the template is this one:

Re: [Bug 841000] Re: Inconsistent or not clear strings for l10n

2011-09-05 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi Thomas,

On Mon, Sep 5, 2011 at 13:17, Matthew Paul Thomas m...@canonical.com wrote:
To my untrained eye, the first two pairs look like they're correctly set
up as plural forms: they're both using gettext.ngettext(). What do you
 mean by inconsistent?

they are correct with regards to the plural form, yes, I was pointing
to the fact that these:

Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d item that matches/a
in software not maintained by Canonical.
Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d items that match/a
in software not maintained by Canonical.

end with a full-stop, while these don't:

Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d item that matches/a
in software not maintained by Canonical
Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d items that match/a
in software not maintained by Canonical

and they are basically the same. Having them more consistent, means
that there will be only one entry to translate for us instead of two.

The same almost applies here too, with these:

Try a href=search-parent/the item in %(category)s/a that matches
Try a href=search-parent/the %(n)d items in %(category)s/a that match

And these:

Try a href=search-parent:the item in %(category)s/a that matches.
Try a href=search-parent:the %(n)d items in %(category)s/a that match.

The difference is in the full-stop at the end of the sentence, and in
this case the use of / instead of : in the href field.
Don't know if that is a GTK2/3 difference for hrefs.

Ciao.

[Bug 841000] [NEW] Inconsistent or not clear strings for l10n

2011-09-04 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Hi,

while translating software-center in Ubuntu for Oneiric, I found some
strings that are inconsistent, resulting in duplicated translation
messages, or strings that are not really clear from an i18n/l10n point
of view.

The inconsistent strings follows:

Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d item that matches/a in
software not maintained by Canonical.
Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d items that match/a in
software not maintained by Canonical.

Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d item that matches/a in
software not maintained by Canonical
Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d items that match/a in
software not maintained by Canonical

The latter are located in:
../softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/widgets/searchaid.py
The former in:
../softwarecenter/ui/gtk/softwarepane.py

I don't know which one is the blessed way of ending the sentence, but having
only one could be interesting.
Also, on similar strings, I noticed that the href in one case ended with a
slash / while here with the colon :. I report the strings for reference:
Try a href=search-parent/the item in %(category)s/a that matches
Try a href=search-parent/the %(n)d items in %(category)s/a that match

That also are similar to these:
Try a href=search-parent:the item in %(category)s/a that matches.
Try a href=search-parent:the %(n)d items in %(category)s/a that match.

Apart from the fullstop at the end of the sentence and the colon instead
of the slash.

The not so clear strings are as follows:

ETA: %s (located in ../softwarecenter/ui/gtk/pendingview.py)

Non-tech people might don't even know what that acronym stands for.

Modify Your %s Review (located in various files)

Here it could be interesting to have a named variable or a translator
comments, since in many languages that %s could be positioned in
different parts of the sentence based on what will be substituted with
it.

No items match %s%s%s (located in
../softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/widgets/searchaid.py)
No items in %s match %s%s%s (located in
../softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/widgets/searchaid.py)

Here the triple %s will be substituted with: %s (using the Uniceod char for
the double quote)
Many languages might use different double quotes rather than the hard coded
Unicode ones. I don't know if that has been done for some specific reasons, but
it could be interesting to have those quotes directly in the translatable
string.

I apologise for not proposing a patch for all of this now, but I would
like to understand if any of those was intentional or if they can be
fix.

Thank you for your attention.
Ciao.

2011-09-04 Thread Milo Casagrande
I subscribed the Ubuntu Translations Coordinators since we should be in
UI freeze right now and this needs attention on their side too.

Any ETA on fixing this? I'll attach a trivia patch, not linking a branch
since it is very trivial (it is just the output of bzr diff).

Thank you for your attention.
Ciao.

[Bug 838860] [NEW] Problem with POT file in the archives

2011-09-01 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

There is a problem in the POT files uploaded with Shotwell. The POT file
is not a valid POT file since it contains characters in a position where
they should not be.

This is also an upstream problem reported here:

http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/4082

Other than at the line reported there, looks like there are other
misplaced characters in the POT file. Since we need an updated POT file
and maybe this is preventing the import queue to be imported, is it
possible to have it fixed at least here in Ubuntu since upstream will be
fixed for 0.11.1 version?

[Bug 811489] Re: Free licenses sould be tagged as Libero instead of Open source in italian translation

2011-07-31 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi Lucio,

thanks for your bug report.

When we first thought about the translation to give to that particular
string, we thought about other possible implications, but in the end we
decided to keep that string similar to the English one.

In this particular case we are talking about a license, so using
libero for a license is not really well suited, we are considering a
lot of different licenses too, all of which could have their particular
meaning.

Also, consider the fact that that same string, is used in this case:
Open source, with proprietary part

and in this case, using libero is not really the best choice.

I'm marking the issue as invalid. If you would like to contact the Ubuntu
Italian translation, you can use our team mail:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-l10n-it

Ciao.

[Bug 785740] Re: xchat-gnome crashed with SIGABRT in __kernel_vsyscall()

2011-06-01 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi,

just to add a comment about this issue: some years ago we experienced a
similar problem with the Italian translation of xchat-gnome, and the
problem was really related to the translation. If I'm not wrong, there
could be problems with the strings in xchat-gnome that look like this
one:

msgid -%C10-%C11-%O$t$1 deleted from notify list.

It is easy to add something or to format the string in a way that can
crash the application.

Just to let you guys know, in case it might help you.

[Bug 789182] Re: [Transmission in Natty] French translations missing

2011-05-27 Thread Milo Casagrande
I witnessed some problem with transmission translation in Italian too.
Having took a look at the code, looks like some of the plural strings are not
handled correctly: they are marked for translation, but they don't show up in
the POT file. Looks like the function for handling the plural is not working in
transmission.

If I'm not wrong, this also affects the upstream version.

Just a note: for the Italian translation, we put the $MEDIUM part

[Bug 660648] [NEW] Non translated elements in the interface

2010-10-14 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

[Bug 633503] [NEW] Bad string concatenation for l10n

2010-09-08 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

While translating ubuntuone-client for Mavercik, I found a strange
string:

Published at

Looking at the code, looks like that string is constructed appending
different strings together. This is the part of the code:

question = g_string_append (question, \t- );
question = g_string_append (question, key);
question = g_string_append (question, _( (Published at ));
question = g_string_append (question, value);
question = g_string_append (question, )\n);

I'm not a Glib expert, but isn't it possible to use
g_string_append_printf() or g_string_append_vprintf() to construct at
least the Published at part? There could be languages that need to
change the position of value to render the string in their own
language.

Also, if possible, I would rather remove padding white spaces from a
translatable string: by mistake somebody could take them out from the
translation.

Thanks.

[Bug 621373] [NEW] Problem with a translatable string

2010-08-20 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

There is one string that can cause some problems to translators. The
string is this one, locate in UpdateManager.py:

%(count_str)s%(download_str)s

This string will be expanded with two other strings previously
defined. The problem is that the translators comment left before this
string says that it is possible to invert the order of the strings
shown. This can be a problem to translators since of the two strings
that will form the final concatenated one, only the count_str (the
first one) has the final white space. If translators don't know this,
and they invert the order, the result would be a long string hard to
comprehend.

I think it is safe to remove the ending white space from the count_str
string, and add it to this one.

I'll attach this trivial patch.

Thanks.

[Bug 618153] [NEW] Bad translatable string concatenation

2010-08-15 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

While going through translation for software-center I found a bad
concatenation for a translatable string.

The multiple strings is located in ../softwarecenter/db/application.py
and it looks like this:

warning = _(Available from the \%s\) % sources[0]
if len(sources) 1:
for source in sources[1:]:
   warning += _(, or from the \%s\) % source
warning += _( source.)

return warning

This is a bad string concatenation becasue it prevents translators to
construct the string in the best way fit for their particular language.

I'm attaching here a patch that tries to solve this problem.

Thanks.

[Bug 618288] [NEW] Use a better word instead of root

2010-08-15 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

This is more a comment/RFC than a real bug.

While going through the translation in Launchpad, I saw this string:
Sorry, you can't share the root of a Ubuntu One volume

Even if this one is a tooltip, it is probably a visible user string.
Shouldn't we try to avoid the use of the word root to describe the
root of the Ubuntu One folder?

What about using something like:
... can't share the main folder of a Ubuntu One volume

[Bug 615097] [NEW] Typos in two strings

2010-08-08 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

ubiquity version: 2.3.4
Ubuntu version: Maverick

While doing a fresh test of the new graphical installer for Maverick, I
found two (supposedly) typos.

One string, as I see it now, is:

Please off me non-open-source software if it is needed for a better
experience

I think it should read:

Please offer me...

The other typo I see is here:

The following notice applies to the Fluendo MP3 plugin: MPEG Layer-3
audio decoding technology licensed from Faunhofer IIS and Thomson.

Shouldn't it be Fraunhofer the name of the audio studio?

Thanks.

[Bug 615104] [NEW] Use of the word Ethernet

2010-08-08 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

ubiquity version: 2.3.4
Ubuntu version: Maverick

This is more a kind of discussion or a RFC if you like.

While going through the steps of the new graphical installer, I saw a
string that says:

that you are connected to the Internet with an Ethernet cable

Personally I find the use of the word Ethernet too techy for non-tech-
savvy users or for casual users (to whom the installer is maybe
tergeted).

What about using a simpler with a cabled connection as opposed to the
wireless network or Wireless string that are in the same template?

Thanks.
