Well, testing Intrepid BETA, i MUST report that:
1) Kernel 2.6.27-6 fixed the problem!!!
2) BUT with current Kernel 2.6.27-7 we had a regression to the initial error.

Played with this some more - The fglrx module doesn't load on it's own at boot.
There's no evidence of an attempt to load in dmesg until I manually tried with
modprobe -a fglrx

xorg seems to be ok running from install on hard drive. Boots to full
resolution and glxinfo says direct rendering: yes
Twinview doesn't behave quite the same as on 8.04, in that wallpaper
doesn't run across both screens in 8.10 - they have to be set
individually.

I have activated the option to disable the wallpaper on connection.
When I try to connect from my notebook (running hardy) to this
intrepid machine then the loading of the first screen takes
I use viagre on my hardy notebook to connect.

J's trick worked for me, Laptop now shuts down normal. I've added two
lines "ifconfig wlan0 down" and "ifconfig eth0 down".

I can reproduce this with Opera web browser as well as Firefox 3. It's
not just a Firefox related issue. It's happening since the 20th or 21th
from this month (October), when I did an update. It contained the kernel
update to -21. However it still happens when booting into -19.

worked perfectly with Hardy. I'll post the dmesg output again. Maybe
somebody recognizes the actual problem. It looks like, if I'm
disconecting the stick during the downloading of the firmware, next time

Well, the symptom is different, because now the package doesn't build, so there
is no candidate which would fail the dependency check... :-(
It's the compilation of bootx/main/init.S which fails.
