[Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad
Hi giacof, Sorry for the delayed response. I don't suppose you'd be able to capture the panic running the latest Jaunty 2.6.28-11.42 kernel. Also, would you be able to take a photograph of the beginning of the stack trace (rather than the end) when the panic happens? I'm closing the Intrepid nomination for now until we can find a fix for the actively developed kernel to backport. Sorry to disappoint you, but the same kernel panic DID occur on Jaunty, at last... I have no idea why it did not happen the first time I tried it. [Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad
Hi Leann, I noticed the Jaunty Alpha 4 was recently released for Kubuntu, too. I think I should make at least one test with KDE, before I could confirm the issue was resolved. Hi giacof, Since you've commented that this particular issue seems to be resolved with Jaunty I'm marking the actively developed linux (Ubuntu) task as Fix Released. I will open an Intrepid nomination to reflect that this is still an issue with Intrepid. However, finding and providing a patch to backport as a Stable Release Update (SRU) may prove to be difficult, especially without the output of the panic you are seeing. Thanks. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Fix Released -- [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321972 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad
Geir, sorry for misunderstanding.. I actually tried it the way you suggest: 1. restart computer and select the Kubuntu partition 2. login as default user and wait for KDE complete startup 3. avoid touching the touchpad until switch to a different VT (by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1) 4. touch the touchpad well, nothing happened... I could even get back to the KDE session and this time the kernel panic did not occur! All worked fine, including input devices! So, it seems it happens only if I try to use the touchpad right after logging into KDE. [Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad
Hello, I recently experienced a different type of crash: no kernel panic this time, but system hung. The atteched Xorg.0.log file reported the following error: [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop. I also found a strange connection: the bug ALWAYS occur when using the Windows Vista partition on the same laptop, and then rebooting and logging into Kubuntu. On the countrary, when I start again Kubuntu after a previous Kubuntu session, everything works fine. ** Attachment added: Xorg.0.log http://launchpadlibrarian.net/22548480/Xorg.0.log -- [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321972 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad
giaconf, I guess Leann wasn't specific enough in her post. When there's a kernel panic, the kernel writes a dump to the cosole. To see this, you have to have a console (any text tty) up when the panic happens. Hopefully this will do the trick: 1. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get up a console. 2. Touch the touchpad (hope that the kernel panic happens) 3. There will be a backtrace dumped to the screen. Every little detail of this is important. Since the computer now hangs, the best way of documenting this by taking a photo of the monitor. (The other option is to write it down manually - a tedious job) Here are a few examples of how a kernel panic looks like (all taken from bug 276990): http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19755071/IMG_5432.JPG http://launchpadlibrarian.net/18498544/NCKernelDump.jpg http://launchpadlibrarian.net/18425143/11102008102.jpg -- [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321972 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad
I confirm this bug on Intrepid, with the same laptop model. I don't know about Jaunty, in any case I'm not allowed to try any unstable release on this notebook. I hope someone is working on a fix, as this bug makes Intrepid nearly unusable and we cannot wait three months for the next official release. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321972 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad
Back to Intrepid, this time I had to reboot twice, as the first attempt resulted in a failure in starting the X server with the vesa driver (see attached Xorg.failsafe.log). The splash screen slowly faded and then the monitor turned blank. No kernel panic occurred, though, and I could restart by hitting [ctrl-alt-del]. I am eager to hear news about a possible fix or work around. Thank you in advance. ** Attachment added: Xorg.failsafe.log http://launchpadlibrarian.net/22018968/Xorg.failsafe.log -- [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321972 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad
Hi again, I made a test on Jaunty and there was no kernel panic. The touchpad worked fine and no error was reported in the Xorg.0.log file. The only two problems I encountered are on the Atheros madwifi driver (see attached dmesg) and the Proxy authentication settings in Network preference. Though I set the proxy user and password, I could not install/update anything from Synaptic, due to http 407 errors. Therefore, I could only test the Gnome environment, while it would be more convenient to check if the bug may be related to KDE 4. In any case, is there any work around for Intrepid? This issue is very annoying: I always have to hard restart and select the recovery entry in the grub menu. [Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad
Hi Leann, enclose is a screenshot that is nearly identical to what I see, the only difference being in the mouse cursor (missing in the attached picture). Actually, I doubt that could be much helpful, as all works fine until I use the touchpad: I can switch to any window by pressing Alt+Tab, issue any command from the console, and even change virtual terminal by hitting Ctrl+Alt +Fn and get back. As I finally touch the touchpad, the desktop simply freezes with no change at all in what I see, and the capslock led starts blinking. Thereafter, the system is totally unresponsive and I have to manually switch the power off. Regarding regression, the first time the kernel panic occurred I was using the freshly released Kubuntu Intrepid 8.10, with kernel 2.6.27-7. The same happened after any kernel upgrade up to 2.6.27-11. I have never tried this laptop with any previous Ubuntu release. I will soon give Jaunty a try and report here the results. Thank you for your time and consideration. ** Attachment added: screenshot.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21771168/screenshot.png -- [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321972 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad
Hi giacof, Would you be able to capture the kernel panic you see? Even if you have to take a digital photo of your screen when the panic occurs that would be fine. Additionally, can you comment if this is a regression you are seeing or has this panic happened with prevous kernels? Finally, would you also be willing to test the latest pre-release of Jaunty (currently Alpha3) - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . You should be able to test via a LiveCD. It would be helpful to know if this exists in the upcoming Jaunty release. Please let us know your results.
