The only solution to make microphone work is to install linux-backports- modules-alsa-generic... Just go to: Menu / System / Administration / Synaptic Package Manager And search and mark for installation: linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic tip: if you have multiple versions click on the first and read the description which should inform what name to install... If after the reboot and mic mute is off, still does not work, just go to terminal and type: sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add or change the following: options snd-hda-intel model=auto enable=yes Then Ctrl+X, type Y to write and exit, reboot and mic will work. I forgot to mention that I am running 9.10. I have had the issue since 8.10. I think. It is hard to remember since it has been so long since it worked. Anyway, it was whenever the switch from esound to pulseaudio occurred. I have an Alienware m9700 w/ nVidia CK804 Ever since the move to pulseaudio my built-in mic has not been working. With many of the same issues stated above. I was finally able to get it working by changing the V_REFOUT in alsamixer to 2.25v instead of High-Z (This almost acts like mute when set to 0v. When set to High-Z it almost as if there is so much interference that you don't hear the audio. I could turn the volume up all the way and I could here what I had recorded mixed in with the static. At 3.7v there was a little white noise in the background. At 2.25v everything was perfect) This got the mic functioning but only with the hardware configured as "Analog Stereo 5.1 output + analog stereo input" The problem with that is that everything played a bit fast and voices sounded as though the person was breathing helium. I set the hardware config in the pulseaudio settings to "Analog Stereo Duplex" And the following in alsamixer. Surround Jack Mode: Independent IEC958 Playback Source: AC-Link V_REFOUT: 2.25v For me it appears that it is a combination of settings between alsamixer and pulseaudio configurations. I have this problem on my desktop - I can hear myself talking through the mic but nothing records in Sound Recorder nor does the mic work for Skype. Works when booted from LiveCD, doesn't work when booted from the hard drive. The difference AFAICT is that somewhere along the line a new sound driver was installed because when booted from the LiveCD I have only a stereo card but when booted from the hard drive I have the full 5.1 controls. My guess is that the sound driver is at fault here. I'm running: Pulse Audio v 0.9.21 Alsa v 1.0.20 (Stock with 9.10) I got my microphone to work finally, probably from messing with alsamixer, but there are some lingering issues that I'm still watching. Adding "model=auto" to the last line of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf fixed the microphone problem for me, but now my audio output goes out to both built in speakers and headphones (when plugged in) at the same time. I upgrade linux kernel to 2.6.32-7. In alsamixer I went over to where it said "mic" and hit "m" to make the square turn green making the inside lettering go white. This apparently unmuted my microphone. There-after odd thing is if I use "Sound Recorder" or even Mangler from http://www.mangler.org/ I can hear myself through my speakers, but the sound never travels to my applications that need it. I upgrade myself to the lastest version of Pulseaudio still with no fix. The microphone still only works when using the LiveCD. Sorry, I should add that I am using an ASUS EeePC 4G with the built-in internal microphone running Ubuntu Karmic and Pulseaudio. Is there a way I can "factory reset" Pulseaudio and then have Ubuntu "rescan-reconfigure" my soundcard? I have another open bug somewhere here on this very i9ssue too. Dragan, quirks do not necessarily follow the model name string in the codec. The only definitive list of quirks is in the source code. I can confirm the same problem with my machine running 9.10 Karmic Koala from a fresh install. The microphone worked in version 9.04. When I boot the computer up from the LiveCD the analog (non-usb) microphone works, and when I boot from the hard drive it does not work. My volume settings were identical under my "Sound Preferences" when comparing the LiveCD and O/S booted from the hard drive. I can assume, maybe any root previlegions (rights) to sound hardware are different (when boot from LiveCD and then boot from installed system). How can I check it? I add user "leo" to the groups "pulse", "pulse- access" and "audio". I upgrade pulseaudio to version 0.9.20 from ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa. And there is no changes. Sound capture don't work. It seems that the input volume settings for your microphone devices are turned down.
