I've had a Pi run JiveLite using the HDGridSkin for a while now. Just as
a gigantic NP screen. I'm happy to replace that Raspbian based system

Not directly editable, but if it is only a couple of files, then you can
break the symlink and copy the file from the read only filesystem. Then
you can edit, but changes will not be persistent through a reboot.

I've just installed LMS on a raspi debian img - same device. No
problems scanning the music files.
Still wonder whether you're running out of memory: Raspbian would
configure a swap file, virtually expanding your memory. piCorePlayer
most likely does not. I might be wrong.

PNG or JPG doesn't really matter: important is not the file size, but
the number of pixels x color depth. 1000x1000 might easily be only a few
hundred kB in file size, but it's 3MB in memory (24 bit colors).
Therefore it doesn't really matter whether you use PNG or

It might work ok on a Pi. The limit was added when we worked on
Radio/Touch. They have 64/128MB respectively (and a much slower CPU
anyway) - much less than the Pi. Change the value, test, and
LMS on the Pro has lame to transcode my flac to MP3, but on the 516 lame
is not in LMS included.
Lame is not part of LMS. You'll have to install it independently, and
LMS will use it when it's available on your system.
