Re: Sad news about Brahmanathaswami

2022-12-25 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
I also worked with Swami for several years and when I heard he was
seriously ill my heart sank. I considered him a friend. Besides LiveCode,
we talked of many things. He was kind and generous, and he loved LC, his
life and his mission. HIs smile was contagious and sometimes when he
laughed he seemed to almost visibly shine. We first connected when he said
he sang to his cow and that she cried when he did it. He said he used to
spend hours lying with his head on her neck, singing to her. He sent me a
link so I could hear him singing and he had a lovely gentle voice. You have
to love someone who sings to cows.

I miss you Swami. I should sing to cows.

What message do I have to catch in the browser widget?
You could try "browserDocumentLoadBegin" or "browserNavigateBegin" which
would give you the URL that was clicked. But most browsers now download or
display the PDF automatically when a PDF link is clicked. Firefox opens the
PDF in a new window, and I think Safari downloads it. Not sure about Windows.

Windows, too, if the Acrobat Plug-in is installed on the target machine.
Only Android cannot display in a browser so far, too bad.
If this is for mobile, the URL might be enough information. BTW, I tried to
use these messages a very long time ago and they were not sent, but
hopefully that's been fixed by now.

Fingers crossed, will try and tell. :-)
Thank you!

macOS 12.6.1, LC 9.6.9 rc2

I tried:

on browserNavigateBegin pUrl
if pURL ends with ".pdf" then
 libURLDownloadToFile pUrl, (specialfolderpath("dektop") & "/test666.pdf")
  else
 pass browserNavigateBegin
  end if
end browserNavigateBegin

on browserDocumentLoadBegin pUrl
if pURL ends with ".pdf" then
 libURLDownloadToFile pUrl, (specialfolderpath("dektop") & "/test666.pdf")
  else
 pass browserDocumentLoadBegin
  end if
end browserDocumentLoadBegin
--
No file on the desktop, the browser simply ignores the script!?

So any hint on how to download a clicked linke in the browser widget still
welcome!

Re: use-livecode Digest, Vol 230, Issue 17

2022-11-23 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
I like to surprise people. :) Basically I was hoping to avoid brute force,
but it looks like import/export may be the best way. If I do the stacks
only a few at a time I'll only need a dozen passes or so.

Part of the problem was determining which locks need changing and which
were not visual effects, or which were locked in one handler and unlocked
in a handler that might be elsewhere, sometimes even in a different stack.
Some manual examination seems required. Fortunately the latter is rare.

A random thought: if you converted to script-only stack behaviors first,

like on.

This project is a huge HC world. There are a lot of stacks, hundreds of cards, and probably
thousands of controls. It's written the old HC way, so behaviors probably wouldn't help; almost
every control is independent and performs a different action. I've already converted the few
common actions to a backscript, but there's nothing much to hang a behavior on.

Navigator has support for test-based filtering of controls, and can
copy/paste scripts, but it doesn't support copying/pasting to more than one
control at a time. That would be an interesting problem to solve. What's
your time frame?

Indeterminate, but not infinite. ;) I won't need to copy scripts though, every one of them is
different. It's truly old-style HC. In fact, I'm still running with HCAddressing set to true,
which breaks the property inspector a lot. My next task is to get rid of that.

My first thought is to export all scripts to a single file, with customized
headers for each object (maybe with a user-definable format). Then look for
that same format when pasting, to restore/update the scripts. Does that
make sense? Or would it be better to have an export function to create
individual files, one ofr each control, with the script in the file? That's
probably more robust, but not everyone knows how to make bulk changes to a
bunch of text files.

Either way would probably work for most things, though if you exported all the controls in this
project to a single file, you'd have a 20 MB novel. TBH, I already have a handler somewhere
that writes out all scripts in a stack with headers; an old HC friend wrote it 30 years ago and
it still works. Maybe I can dig that up.

Re: Anyone any experience with Livecode under Ventura?

There is no scheduling, it's all automatic. Time Machine backs up once an
hour, then combines the back ups once a day, then once a week, then once a
month. When the disk is full it deletes the oldest to make room. With a
multi-terrabyte drive that doesn't happen often.

It alternates each backup every hour between my two drives. You can add any
number of drives and it will rotate every hour among them.

The UI combines all the backups into a single visual report so you don't
need to figure out which drive stores it. If you don't like the visual
display you can use the Finder and grab any backup from there. For
convenience, TM creates an alias to the most recent backup on each drive.

Enter does not trigger and doesn't compile for me in the script editor on LC 9.6.9 rc 2. It

Re: Easy Android adaptive icons

2022-11-12 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
Not quite. Prerendered means that you have already added glow and shine to
the icons. If you want Apple to render the icon according to the style of
the phone's current OS, leave prerendered unchecked and Apple will draw the
shine effect for you. IPhones don't use .icns files.

You don't need prerendered if you are just using a basic image. Apple will

If you hover the mouse over the "..." next to the icon path field, it will tell you the size it

The tool tip for the ‘APPLY’ button says.

‘compile and apply the current script (Enter, cmd+Return)’

I actually did not know there was a keyboard shortcut for the ‘Apply’
button. That is a handy tip.

I tried it out and at first it did not work. That time the focus was on
the script field and the text cursor was there.

If I clicked on part of the card outside of the script field then the
cmd+Return key combination worked.

If I clicked in another object like the ‘find’ text field or a handler in
the list to the left of the text field or on the ‘MatchCase’
checkbox	CMD+Return would not work.

So it looks like it only works when there is no focus on a field or other
object.

In any case it sounds like a bug. The key combination should work whether
the script field has focus or not.

Since I have never used that key combo before I am not sure whether that

Easy Android adaptive icons

2022-10-18 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
For anyone struggling with Android adaptive icons, or who like me doesn't want to deal with
Android Studio just to make a single icon, I found this:

https://easyappicon.com/

It does work and is quick and easy. The Android icons are all placed in a single folder and I
think you can probably just point the Standalone Settings to that folder, though I renamed it
"res" in case LC is looking for the Android Studio naming convention.

It also makes iOS icons which seem to come along automatically. Those are all in a second
folder which you can ignore, trash, or use for cross platform development.

I tried several different online icon utilities and this one worked best for me.

You also do a *lot* of work on both opening the stack and opening the
card. And looping through that many times in your test. Your loop test
doesn't really simulate real-world conditions for Navigator, so I don't
think I'd worry about it too much.

Why would the stack be opened, or the card, just checking existence? And
why would that happen each time rather than once?

FYI for all tests the stacks are already open.

And: Navigator until the version I'm working on now did exactly this when
getting a list of the card names I have no idea why I coded it that way,
but checking that method vs. getting the number of cards and then getting
the names based on that was what let me to notice this.

thanks!

Re: NAVRAD was: lcb missing manual

2022-09-15 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
Legally the only date that matters is the date of creation. Almost everyone
adds the current date as well, and I keep trying to talk my clients out of
it but they won't listen. Then I have to keep updating the copyright
string, knowing it doesn't matter, but if I don't the app looks old and
unsupported. Some time back I wrote a handler that updates the end date to
the current year on launch so I don't have to worry about it.

A single copyright creation date is valid for the life of the creator plus
(in the US) 75 years.

Oh well.

Re: System Time Zone

2022-09-14 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
That was my first thought too and I (erroneously) suggested the internet
"time", which should have been "date". I found a ready-made lookup list and
began experimenting. No go.

You have to know whether the area is on daylight savings time because the
offset changes. You also need to know the location because cities in the
same zone vary, and Apple's format requires a specific city location
reference, so that would be a second lookup.

And the OP doesn't want a lookup list anyway.

size of that text is larger, and so any labels I have overflow the label
and only show me part of the text.

What I want to do is set up my environment so that whatever font I use in
the MacOS uses, there is an identical font on the Windows side as well. I
know there is a way to embed fonts in a project, but I don't really
understand how that works.

If I use a font that exists in both Mac and Windows, a common web font for
instance, they do not look at all the same on both platforms. Verdana is a
good example. I am not averse to purchasing a font family or two and
statically setting my font, size and style for every object, so long as the
Windows and MacOS look (reasonably) the same.

Any ideas?

Re: addIcon issue

2022-08-21 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
I don't think you can add to the default icon family. The docs say that if
you haven't specified a family then the icon goes into one named "custom".
So see what you get when you run iconFamilies() and if "custom" is in there
then set the family using setCurrentIconFamily("custom").

If you prefer, you can create your own family with its own name with
addIconFamily. In any case you have to set the current family before you
can use its icons.

When I accidentally started replying to Andreas privately instead of to the list (I should pay
more attention, geez) he suggested others may want to see my test app. Thanks to Andreas for
being so polite about it.

So here you go:

On desktop browsers, everything works great. On mobile it works pretty well except for text
entry and a minor display issue.

On mobile it isn't possible to drag-select text in editable fields. Typing is iffy as well, and
depending on the (Android) keyboard you use, the cursor can be misaligned and/or key presses
don't always insert entries. I didn't test on iOS.

I've added a simple behavior to all the scrolling fields and removed the ugly field scrollbar.
It tracks the mouse movement and scrolls the field accordingly. That works on desktop but
doesn't work on mobile. This matches the behavior of anything draggable: the slider widget
button, the buttons in the Population example that use "grab", and the LC field scroller thumb.

On both desktop and mobile, text styling isn't working. Some of the text in the "What is this?"
substack should be bold but displays as plain. On the other hand, the substack does display
correctly layered over the mainstack. I had wondered if it would work, and it does.

I know this will all get fixed so I'm not worried. This is just an example of where we're at
right now for anyone curious. Overall, web deployment is very impressive. I was surprised at
how good it is even in an unfinished state.

BTW, the ideas behind this stack are not original. I first re-created them in MetaCard based on
online discussions 20 years ago, and when I opened it recently in LC 10 the stack opened
without error. Kudos to Mark Waddingham's attention to backward compatibility.

and the scroll js from there, but only the resize part works for me. It’s
strange since my portal solution apparently catches resize events and
passes them on to topStack, but fails to catch/pass scroll events…

A few issues with web apps

2022-08-18 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
I have just created my first web deployment and I'm *very* impressed. I didn't need to change
any of the original scripts, the only changes were for visual elements that were different when
run in a browser. Aside from appearance, the scripts ran flawlessly.

On desktop it's great in all three browsers I tested on. But I ran into issues when running in
mobile browsers on Android. Does anyone know how to fix these things:

1. Editable fields fail with both SwiftKey and GBoard keyboards, though they fail in different
ways. The cursor is misaligned on GBoard, I can't type spaces in SwiftKey, and it is impossible
to drag-select text in either one. Do I need an Android native field? Right now I'm just using
LC fields.

2. The slider widget does not allow dragging the round indicator button. I can tap the bar to
get an approximate setting but fine tuning with the slider button is impossible. Rather than
slide, the whole web canvas moves instead.

3. I have some scrolling fields and the default Motif scrollbar looks awful. How do I implement
a native browser scroller? Should I use the scripts I use for mobile devices? What's the best
way to implement scrolling fields?

All in all, everything else works, which is really quite incredible.

There is more info in the bug report:

For us the problem did not show up until users installed Windows 11, and the drivers that ship
with that conflict with LC, while the OEM driver does not. If Win 10 users are having the same

2022-08-17 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode

The suggested fix in the bug report has worked for us:

https://quality.livecode.com/show_bug.cgi?id=23659

Basically, delete the driver that comes with Windows and get the driver from Epson. Most of the
problems seem to be with Epson printers but if your customers have a different printer, try
that OEM driver.

We had one instance where the user didn't have a printer at all, but just deleting the Epson
driver fixed it.

I misunderstood, you don't mean just the names of the elements. The value shows up as part of

I find that too many behavior stacks make it difficult to keep track of
where things are. But the primary downside is that script-only stacks don't
work with remote debugging. That's a big drawback for me since most of my
apps these days are for mobile. I do use behaviors quite a bit, but I put
the scripts into buttons so they can be debugged remotely. Or maybe you
mean you use regular stacks for behaviors? Those would work.

The switch construct is way more flexible than if/then and much cleaner to
read and track. I use them all the time. They're especially useful when you
want to group several conditionals. What don't you like about them? Just
curious.

Re: Substacks

2022-05-28 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
In an app, the mainstack is the home stack. If it's closed and no other
stack is open then the app will quit. But if you open a substack, the app
can't quit because the substack is part of the stackfile but the mainstack
is still marked as closed. So the trick is not to close the mainstack, just
hide it instead when you open the substack. When you close the substack,
show the mainstack.

At least, that's what I think is happening.

It sounds like the HTML tags are setting the size for runs of text in the
field, so you can’t just set the textSize of the field?

I did try setting the text size of the field, and all untagged chunks reflect the new size as
expected (default field text is 20 points.) But there are exceptions embedded in the text that
require superscripts and/or other sizes for chapter headings and other things. It looks like this:

TEXT HERE shift="-6">TEXT HERETEXT HERETEXT
HERETEXT HERE, ETC ETC

The text is too long for a single field so I'm using Trevor's dataView (thank you so much
Trevor!) The text sizes and superscripts are footnotes, references, and other supplementary
info. They are scattered liberally around in the text.

Untagged text responds well to the field text size, which I can easily change in the dataView
template. But the superscripts text size and offset, and other changes do not because they are
specifically indicated with integers. If I could use percentages, then changing the field text
size would proportionally change everything else. But percentages don't work in my tests.

I wish we could use CSS in LC fields, but it isn't supported. I can't use any type of browser
because we need features that a browser doesn't support.

Are there varying sizes of text runs in the field? Could you set the textSize
of the char 1 to -1 of the field to empty, then set it for the whole field? In
one project I’ve implemented a feature similar to what Bob was talking about
where I increment the textSize of the field by 1 point using Cmd/Cntl + or -.

This is a mobile app, so no keyboard is available. It's been in the app stores for about a year
but our main complaint from users is that the text is too small on a phone. We'd like to fix
that. The choice of font size would be a setting in user prefs and the text would accomodate
that whenever the app runs.

Native Android input field

2022-04-28 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
In the after-party that Richard set up on the last day of the conference, the question came up
whether the native Android field widget would scroll. The answer is, yes it does.

There is one little glitch. If the widget is editable, and your finger lifts inside the widget
after scrolling, the keyboard pops up. If you end the scroll while your finger is outside the
field area, it does not.

This doesn't happen if the field is not editable. Also in either case, the scroll isn't as
smooth as it is when constructed in a script.

Double check the files in the Copy Files pane of the standalone settings
and make sure that the file paths are correct. I'm not aware of a log file
for the builder.

Is there a Standalone Builder log I can look at?

Re: Mobile Image Editing

2022-04-08 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
I'm not sure I understand. When you "downsize" do you mean you're scaling? Or are you creating
a new image? Or cropping the original?

On 4/7/22 9:11 PM, Brian Milby via use-livecode wrote:

Greetings list people!

I am currently working on a project where we will be editing images on a
mobile device. I'm running into an issue where the formatted height and
width of the image change. Most of the images are natively 1600x1200 but
we initially display them scaled to fit on the screen. When the user does
any edit action at a zoomed out level, the image is downsized to the
current zoom. Once downsized, if you zoom in on the image and edit, the
formatted size doesn't change.

Is there any way around this? What we would really like is to edit the
image and keep it at the full resolution.

We are currently using the native LiveCode paint/bucket tools. Although
most of my testing is in the IDE at the moment, we do use resize handlers
to format for the actual device resolution.

I can of course add a "color overlay" but when I use them as

Any hints on how to add color to them when using them
as "imagesource" in a field without screenshotting them or
exporting them, add color in an image editing app and
reimport them as images?

Thanks for any hint!

Re: destroystack/destroywindow not working?

2022-03-21 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
I've seen this occasionally, where the mainstack is removed but the substacks are still in the
list of available stacks. I think the IDE list of stacks in memory isn't updated correctly
unless all substacks are marked as destroyed. At least, that's what it looks like.

When I close it and open another stack which has a

"A stack with that name is already in memory..."

Shouldn't setting destroystack/destroywindow prevent this?
Or am I misunderstanding the meaning of these props?

I made the same mistake a while ago, until I remembered that the encoded
array is binary. You have to write and read it to/from a binary file. If
you just use "open file" you get text only.

Then in the openStack handler I have this:

put the filename of this stack into tSettingsPath
  set the itemDelimiter to "/"
put "settings.prefs" into item -1 of tSettingsPath
  open file tSettingsPath for read
read from file tSettingsPath until eof
  put it after tSettingsText

set the settings of me to tSettingsA

Instead of an array, I get the text "gr" which is the first 2 characters of
the key "grid text" in the array. That can't be right!

And yet more weirdly again, when the line is displayed in a field with wrap
true, the weird three characters appear at the beginning of ‘new lines’ except
they are not actually new lines because they highlight as a single block. An
invisible form feed? or something else between 9 and u that a wrapping field

The text came from a server, right? This sounds like it may be a text encoding issue. It's
likely UTF8, so try textDecode(tText,"UTF8") and see if that resolves it.

Re: How to access scripts on a modal card that is stuck / not visible?

2022-03-18 Thread J. Landman Gay via use-livecode
Modes are only for stacks and can't be used for individual cards. It sounds
like the whole stack is going modal. There are several ways to edit a
script for a control.

1. Click the script lines in the project browser, or right click the
control in the app browser and choose "edit script".

2. In the message box: edit script of . I.e., edit script of btn 1
3. Turn off messages in the toolbar. Then you can edit scripts as usual.
4. Choose the edit tool, right click the control, choose to edit the script.
5. If the stack is already in modal mode, use the message box to: toplevel
. Or Cmd-Opt-Shift click the stack and choose toplevel from the
Mode menu item. (I assume on Windows that's control-alt-shift.)

There are also other keyboard shortcuts but those should get you started.
Since the mode doesn't change unless you click the button, you should be
able to edit the script normally if you don't do that.

You can display a substack as a modal login, or use a group on the current
card.
