[ANNOUNCE] Fixed in Apache OpenOffice 4.1.3: Three Security Vulnerabilities

2016-10-17 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
[BCC to PMC; AOO Security]

Apache OpenOffice 4.1.3 includes fixes for three security vulnerabilities that
are published with CVE (Common Vulnerability and Exposure) IDs. Two are
publicly disclosed as part of the release.

The complete list and the individual bulletins can be found via
.

Although there are no known exploits against any of these, users are urged to
update their Apache OpenOffice to version 4.1.3.

RE: Request for Nofollow or Removal of Links to My Site at Openoffice

2016-09-25 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
The WHOIS only provides the registration for the base domain name, in this case
openoffice.org.

This is about who has the domain-name lease, not where the content is or how it
is hosted.

In this particular case, templates.openoffice.org, a subdomain, forwards to a
location on SourceForge. The WHOIS tell you nothing about subdomains. They
are not registered.

Also, Apache Infrastructure is not about management of content, but providing
the basic service. In this case, the www.apache.org web site and also the
subdomain setup. But the content is either under control of the Apache
OpenOffice project or, when forwarded to a different organization, under some
sort of mutual operation. Templates and Extensions are in the second category.

Patricia Shanahan, on dev@, has identified a contact at SourceForge that this
can be worked on with, and further discussion should be on dev@ where such
technicalities are dealt with.

http://templates.openoffice.org is definitely found at the web site that is
operated by the Apache OpenOffice project. It makes sense that the project
would be contacted.

However, the templates portion is operated by SourceForge.

Unfortunately, this page is not helpful enough:
.

Someone who knows more about how to change entries or to delete them needs to
be involved.

I am moving this to dev@ openoffice.org where it is more likely someone can
help.

[orcmid]

I received an off-list response that NetBeans provides a platform that a GUI
application can run on top off.

Although that still baffles me, I am unclear how that would work, unless the
move to a Java application was done. The Introduction to NetBeans suggests
that the Platform works primarily for Java applications and it simplifies the
creation of GUI applications (although it helps with non-GUI applications too).

In any case, any major approach to refactoring the code base needs to deal with
these figures:

The Source Code for Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2 consists of

1.43 GB (1,541,226,333 bytes) of text in
 60,955 files, in
  6,429 folders.

It would take an army to figure out how to do that refactoring and then
orchestrate it, with all of the testing needed every step of the way. And we
don't know, without more analysis whether it is even feasible, especially with
regard to the GUI-facing code and the model beneath it.

[orcmid]

I still don't understand what difference using NetBeans as a platform would
prevent trying this whether or not NetBeans comes to Apache, unless it is a
license issue. If the patform is preserved in Apache NetBeans, the licensing
has to be fixed in order for that to happen.

I don't understand what that means.

I thought NetBeans is an IDE with an extensive collection of plug-ins.

Do you mean to somehow have the build system work in a way that integrated use
of NetBeans is possible?

You could try that now.

Why would it matter whether NetBeans becomes Apache NetBeans in the future?
The migration to Apache has not started yet. It will take some time.

Dan,

There is not enough information to know what your problem is.

There is no OOoTransit extension on the Apache OpenOffice site,
.

What do you mean that access is restricted to that extension and others?

Where are you finding these extensions, or where did you find them in the past?

Issue 127104, <https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127104> now has the
PDF created from Word 2016 and the original .docx file as attachments.

I described this as incorrect rendering of Arabic text, although that might not

RE: Conversion Problem

2016-09-11 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
I confirm that the myfile.docx renders very differently between Microsoft
Office Word 2016 and Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2.

The file is in an RTL script and there are Apache OpenOffice discrepancies with
regard to page layout (such as on the first page) and with margin alignment and
with table columns not switching to RTL. There are also incorrect and missing
image presentations.

I have created a PDF of how Microsoft Word renders the file, for use in
comparison with Apache OpenOfice rendering and that of others. It is too large
to be accepted on this mailing list.

I will open a Bugzilla with the original .docx and the .pdf as attachments so
that we all know what we're talking about.

RE: Ribbon Interface

2016-09-09 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
This is as good a place for your question as any.

You can tell there are strong differences felt about other user interfaces.

In any case, no developers have taken an interest in this and it won't happen
unless a volunteer developer with the capacity, capability, and will to
undertake something like that offers to provide it.

Since it would impact the Linux and MacOSX interfaces too, this seems very
unlikely.

 - Dennis

PS: To the degree that there is intellectual property involved, I can't imagine
that Microsoft would license it.

Yes, that is what I was thinking of.

I don't understand why there has to be a single section, although that works in

[orcmid]

It is at best a mix. There are functions of Publisher that OpenOffice Writer
does not have (such as column flow into non-contiguous pages) but that might
not matter to you. And Publisher tends to depend on Word as a choice source of
content to import into Publisher.

Publisher 2016 is included with the desktop applications provided under Office
365 Home and Personal (along with Access). That's how I happen to have it
(except with 365 Business). If you only need a non-business subscription to
Office 365, those would seem to be useful.

If you are still running Publisher, it should be easy enough to install Apache
OpenOffice and do your own comparison testing.

And there are many Desktop Publishing Software products around, and a few are
free. Without knowing more about your needs, other than as a beginner, it is
difficult to recommend particular options among them.

Just remember, however you approach this, to always keep progressive backups
and be careful how you close your work and shut down your computer, avoiding
any kind of loss of your work to only the most recent changes.

RE: Ribbon Interface

2016-09-09 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
This is a Ford versus Chevrolet matter (or Toyota versus BMW, if you prefer).
Absolute statements like this are not helpful. There are folks who find the
ribbon and its growing consistency across Windows to be very useful, especially
since you can make the whole thing disappear and pop down only when you want it.

Regardless, there is no plan and no likelihood that Apache OpenOffice will
offer a ribbon interface. Apache OpenOffice was never intended as a Microsoft
Office "work alike," and there is no indication of developer interest in any
such massive change to the interface.

In my view, there is greater benefit in having better interchange at the
file-format level with fewer conversion failures in either direction.

RE: contribution to OpenOffice

2016-09-05 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
There is a misunderstanding about what being an Apache sponsor signifies.

Apache sponsors provide funding to the Apache Software Foundation. There is no
connection with how those funds are used (although a significant support to the
Infrastructure operations is in there). There is also no connection with
provision of developers or anything like that. It also needs to be understood
that the Apache Software Foundation does not pay developers.

Some sponsors, and other organizations, allow developers and other staff to
contribute to Apache OpenOffice projects, often as part of their working
activities. Apache OpenOffice has had contributors who were operating under
those conditions. This is almost always because the contributor's employer has
a practical use for the result of the effort. That was also the case for
OpenOffice and is the case for other Apache projects. When the practical
result is no longer relevant to the organization, the developers are invariably
assigned to different work, although they might continue on their own time.

Student developers and their instructors do approach the Apache OpenOffice
project, especially for QA activities which can be small and focused enough to
be good student projects. The Google Summer of Code for 2017 would be another
case. However, those activities required mentoring and careful support.
Apache OpenOffice developers have not volunteered as GSoC mentors and defined
any projects in the recent past. Whether that happens in 2017 depends a great
deal on whether the project can expand its capacity for supporting such work.

That is why these suggestions are fine, and are made regularly, yet nothing can
be done until capable developers arrive that can provide the capacity to
support student mentoring. Our shortage is in expertise and having capacity
for these activities along with the ones that volunteer experts choose to focus
on.

Now perhaps it is more understandable why you have been asked what expertise
you have to offer that could support what you hope to see. And with regard to
how all projects under the ASF are expected to operate, I think you need to
address the Apache Software Foundation about that after becoming familiar with
its flavor of "ecosystem", .

Yes, I think it would be a serious loss. Not just for up to 50 million users,
but also for the stability of the OpenDocument Format and for users who would
be better served in the future.

At the same time, the practical limitations are what they are and it depends
more on those who can develop the software and not so much on those who benefit
freely from using it.

Tim,

The open-source license under which Apache OpenOffice is provided does not
prevent commercial use in any manner.

However, the use of Apache Software Foundation trademarks is a different

[orcmid]

Up through OpenOffice.org 3.3, printed guides were provided through a group
known as ODF Authors, . There was a setup to
continue developing guides for Apache OpenOffice. However, the AOO project did
not sustain that effort. The ODF Authors work continued with LibreOffice only.
Some of those works, and works of other authors, are available in printed
form. Much of that material remains applicable to Apache OpenOffice as well.

As a practical matter, the Apache OpenOffice project does not have volunteers
for the undertaking you suggest. The only user documentation effort involves
occasional contributions to wiki pages.

RE: spreadsheet password

2016-08-20 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
The Save with Password functions of Apache OpenOffice use serious encryption
techniques that require the original password to be known.

There is no means to recover the password from the files. There is no means to
recover the file without discovering the password.

The weakest point in this procedure is the password itself. There are programs
that attempt to discover weak passwords by rapid, automated trials of
commonly-used passwords, short passwords, ones with inadequate variety
including well-known patterns.

You might find a program that offers to decrypt OpenOffice files (assuming you
are using .ods for your spreadsheets) although there is usually no promise to
succeed and the free trial will perhaps not try long enough. If you pay for
one of those, there still may not be any solution in a reasonable amount of
time spent running the program. The risk is yours.

It is the purpose of Save with Password to be this difficult and keep whatever
your data is that private.

There is a slight risk that a file is damaged in such a way that the correct
password is also unsuccessful. Since you mention several spreadsheets, that is
likely not the case.

RE: Re: Re: Reply to : download, but unable to use

2016-08-09 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
I believe the objection was to the statement that Apache OpenOffice will
produce .docx files. That it will not do. Yes, .doc, .xls, .ppt can be
produced. But not .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx.

Although Apache OpenOffice will read .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx (though not
necessarily as well as the older forms), it is not possible to edit them and
save them back in the very same format. After any editing, one must save in an
older Microsoft Office format (.doc, etc.) and hope, as always, that the
necessary features and fidelity of the original are preserved.

RE: Email format.

2016-08-07 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
I'm sorry for your difficulties, Penny.

I think there is some confusion about the different ways that you can send and
receive emails using Windows 10. There is a mail tool that is part of Windows
10 and it will work on the desktop.

You can find that tool, named "Mail" on your start menu. If you do not see it,
it is the first item under "M" on the all-programs list. You can use Mail for
Windows 10 in full screen and have a large writing surface. As you change the
size, notice that paragraph text will be reflowed to automatically fit in the
area available for the message. That works for incoming email also.

I just used Mail for Windows 10 to compose an email to you. I see that it has
styles (Heading1, etc.) and you can select fonts, font sizes, and even font
colors in messages you compose. You will receive it separately.

If you were able to use your Charter account with Windows Live Mail, it should
also work with Mail for Windows 10. It may take a little exploration to find
the ways to set it up. The arrangements are a little different. The good news
is that there is great consistency about this throughout Windows 10, once you
get the hang of it.

The term "Outlook" is a bit confusing. It can be used to refer to Outlook.com,
the email service (formerly called "Hotmail"). It can be used to refer to a
web site for composing and reading your mail. It can be used to refer to
Microsoft software that operates on the desktop and will work with many
services, including Outlook.com.

PS: The Mail software has spelling checks automatically and it will
auto-correct the first letter of a new sentence to be capitalized. Also, if
you use Enter to start a new line, that new line is taken as the first line of
a new paragraph/sentence. In modern word processing, only use Enter when you
want to start a new paragraph and let the software automatically flow text from
line to line in a single paragraph in whatever width of view you (and a
recipient) are using.

PPS: There are magnifier, text-to-speech and other useful assistance options
built into Windows 10.

ABOUT YOUR BOOK

Do you know what software you were using to write your book on Windows XP? I
think the versions of Word, Excel, etc., on your Windows machine was a trial
version that was provided free on new computers. It seems your trial has
expired. When the trial expires, it will read documents but not allow you to
edit them.

There are a variety of alternatives. But first, we need to know the format of
your 500page book.

You are welcome to donate via Paypal to the Apache Software Foundation.

Apache OpenOffice does not accept donations directly.

Apache OpenOffice does not provide information of the kind you propose.

If you offer a service to users of Apache OpenOffice, there is a place where
you can be listed.

See . There is no fee.
And there is no endorsement.

RE: Open Office 4 Email Problems

2016-07-31 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Assuming you want the recipient to have an email with your document file
attached, use the following steps:

 1. Save the study document to your file system.

 2. When you open Windows Live Mail and address a new message to be sent,
attach the document. (This might be an Insert option depending on your
version.) Then send the message.

Alternative: If you have the Windows PC desktop application for Windows Live
Mail, see if you can set it as your default email application. Then the Send
to Email from Apache OpenOffice 4 might work. If it doesn't, use the above
procedure.

If this is unclear, please reply to users@openoffice.apache.org with

RE: Possible Scam

2016-07-31 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
The "tech support guy" would not have been anyone representing the Apache
OpenOffice project. It sounds like the "clean up" program may have been
malware of some form. That is a common ploy to convince users that they need
to install what is in fact unnecessary and unwanted software. How did you
locate and communicate with that person?

You need to find a way to have that software removed from your machine. I
recommend getting advice at an Apple store. If you have concerns that the copy
of OpenOffice that you installed is also not legitimate, you can have that
removed also (or uninstall it yourself), and then download and install one via
. Check that you obtain one that works on the
version of OS X on your Macbook Pro.

Note that Apple, Microsoft and others do not "cold call" users, and those who
pass themselves off as some sort of support don't know if you really have a
computer, that it has problems, etc. It could be that scammers have you listed
as a Macbook user by virtue of the original call and/or the clean-up program
being installed.

RE: How to open zipped file

2016-07-31 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
The problem appears to be that the iCloud Drive recognizes that OpenOffice
documents are in a special form of Zip. They are not meant to be unzipped,
however. They must be opened by an application, such as OpenOffice, that
recognizes the special form and treats them correctly as OpenDocument Format
documents.

Are you attempting to reuse these back on your Windows 10 machine or your iPad?

If you are downloading them from iCloud back to a Windows machine, change the
name from extension .zip to the correct form for OpenOffice (.odt for Text,
.ods for Spreadsheet, .odp for Presentation). And have OpenOffice installed on
the machine you are doing this on. (There is no OpenOffice for the iPad but
other applications might work.)

If you cannot see the .zip extension (or .odt and the others) on the files,
there is a setting you need to make in Windows 10 to reveal them. In the File
Explorer, on the View tab, check the "File name extensions" box in the
Show/hide section (or however those are identified in your language).

I don't believe there is any support for export to .docx as part of 4.2.0.

There is no target date for release of 4.2.0 at this time.

RE: a question about openoffice and remote.

2016-07-26 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
There is no support for Microsoft Publisher or Microsoft Visio formats
(although SVG can be interchanged with the latest releases of Visio).

OpenOffice can operate with remote file systems that appear as if they appear
as local disk drives or file folders on your operating system. OpenOffice does
not implement protocols for operating with remote file stores in other ways
(except for some WebDAV support).

Apache OpenOffice does not have a means to save documents as .docx. If it is

Of course, I could simply be over-thinking this whole thing and it would be
more valuable to do something.

I still would like any feedback that there is before investing in something
like this.

The need for development of hotfix procedures for end-users led me to elevate
this lingering topic of mine for discussion. I regret not anticipating the
need for better information for situations like that and user trouble-shooting
as well.

[DISCUSS] Places for Installation, Startup, Troubleshooting, Caveats, Tips, Workarounds, and maybe FAQ?

2016-07-24 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
[BCC to dev and users lists - please keep the conversation on doc@ for now, at
least by BCC, since it pertains to use of the wiki(s).]

I notice that the User Guide draft does not provide connection to topics around
installation, startup, and so on, at least not at the top level,
<https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/UserGuide>.

The Apache OpenOffice Documentation Project page is project descriptive, rather
than documentation descriptive,
at <https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation>. This page has a mix of
old and somewhat recent material and a variety of formats and
works-in-progress.

I am particularly interested, myself, in information about installation, start
up, ways of starting work with documents, saving and locating documents, tips
for configuring for careful and systematic operation as well as
trouble-shooting, working-around common problems, and limitations to be known
about. I am also interested in that information being well-illustrated. My
priority, by the way, is Windows first, since that represents over 85% of our
user community measured by download statistics.

These don't seem to be part of the User Guide project but there are a variety
of places where better information could be provided.

It seems to me that there are three ways to have the supporting documentation
address this.

 1. Add a section to the user guide for covering Installation, Configuration,
Operation, Troubleshooting, and Removal. It would need to deal with separation
of the different platforms (and their versions) in some clean way so that users
on a particular platform can find what is pertinent to them and requires
knowing their computer operating-system when it is not the same for all
platforms. It would also need to deal with differences in AOO version
functionality/caveats in some manner.

 2. Use the current structure and update and add the information that seems to
be important for providing the kind of documentation support I am speaking of,
employing/expanding HOWTOs and the Frequently Asked Questions to tie into such
material.

 3. Maybe some combination, although cross-referencing might not serve users
well unless it is smooth and frictionless (especially around users not losing
their place based on what they are looking into).

Down the road, I would think it would be good to move The Documentation Project
to a DocumentationProject wiki topic, and have current relevant documentation
at the Documentation topic. Older material about unsupported software could
move to a separate topic page (PreviousDocumentation ?) and cleaned up, and be
accessible from the top-level Documentation topic.

Is there some coordination required about this, so that things don't be left in
a broken, disconnected state? I think the material could be migrated in a way
that keeps everything connected even as material is morphed into a new
structure.

 - Dennis

PS: I notice there were no responses to this question about how inter-version
changes or specific-version items are identified.

PPS: Something else that needs to be done is cleanup around what is under PDL
and what is not. I would thing that needs to be attended to in separation of
Apache Licensed material and anything that must be retained under PDL.

[REPORT] CVE-2016-1513 Security Advisory

2016-07-21 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
[BCC AOO Users; BCC AOO PMC]

Today, advisory CVE-2016-1513 has been published with regard to disclosure of a
potentially-exploitable defect in crafted Impress documents. The advisory can
be found at <http://www.openoffice.org/security/cves/CVE-2016-1513.html>.

There is no updated release at this time. There is action underway. We can
now discuss those actions and also seek assistance in the wider community.

NEXT STEPS

As indicated in the advisory, a patch is already known and available for
developer use.

In addition, the Apache OpenOffice security team has developed candidate "hot
fix" binaries. These are single shared-library files that can be manually
installed by users in place of the same file in the program directory of their
Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2 installation.

There are two crucial concerns for the eventual release of a hotfix in this
manner. First, we must have more testing of the hotfix substitution to ensure
that there is no regression of any kind. Secondly, the introduction of a
hotfix is something that casual users must be able to perform with confidence
and reliability. For that, we need to ensure that the procedures provided are
complete and reliable (and that users have a way to recover from any misstep).
So we also require community assistance in reviewing, applying, and revising
the procedure.

Ultimately, the preferable solution is to have an automatic installer for the
hotfix that does not require manual manipulations in operating-system file
locations. Because localization does not appear to be relevant to this fix,
that is easier than producing complete localized distributions for all
platforms and languages.

Additional information and details for participating in the assurance of the
available hotfix replacements will be provided over the next couple of days.

Thank you for your continuing support and reliance on Apache OpenOffice.

RE: Helping More People Access Open Office

2016-07-20 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Dave hasn't spoken up so ...

I interpret his remark as being a casual observation about the ASF (and its AOO
project) not being a for-profit, commercial operation.

Going all legalese about this is probably not useful. I doubt that the
intended audience is confused.

There are different kinds of non-profits, by the way, and there is a wide range
of different activities. (E.g., the ASF is neither trade association nor
standards-development consortium.)

The ASF has declared itself as serving the public interest by providing free
software as a public good. In doing so, the ASF puts meticulous attention on
the intellectual-property cleanliness of the software released under its name.
The also has standards of good open-source citizenship that it applies to the
conduct of its projects. These are more strenuous conditions than the literal
requirements for compliance with the Apache License. A relevant case for
Apache OpenOffice is that projects incorporate license-compatible software from
third parties only when it is explicitly allowed by someone with the authority
to do so.

That is worth discussing on the main thrust of this message thread and related
ones that have arisen lately.

[REPORT] Community Lists and Archives Activity through 2016 Q2

2016-07-15 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Community Lists and Archives

This is list activity data compiled for the 2016 Second-Quarter report to the
Apache Software Foundation Board.

Every mailing list has decreased in average monthly activity from 2016 Q1
to 2016 Q2. Some mailing lists have negligible traffic. Because of
Northern Hemisphere Summer, it is too soon to know how much the year-over-
year decline in activity has continued.

The complete compilation of the data is in PDF at

RE: OpenOffice for Business

2016-07-15 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
To amplify Andrea's response.

All distributions provided by the Apache OpenOffice project are free to the
public and free to use, whether for personal or business purposes.

The software is developed, provided, and supported by volunteers. The same
support is available to all. The support avenues are linked on the page at
.

There may be third parties that provide support for organizations. They are
separate from the Apache OpenOffice project. Those that have provided
information to Apache OpenOffice are listed at
. We do not know how
current this information is and we have not evaluated those services. The
listing is simply for information purposes.

RE: Uninstall Issue

2016-07-13 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Also, if you are on Windows, Robert, you can use the Control Panel to uninstall
Apache OpenOffice. There are different ways to find the Control Panel
depending on the version of Windows you are using.

On the control panel dashboard, use the Programs (Uninstall a program) item.
The programs are listed in alphabetical order. You'll find Apache OpenOffice
under OpenOffice 4.1.2 (for the latest release). Select that and click
"Uninstall" in the menu above the list of programs.

This will leave some information on your system so that a reinstall will
preserve some of your settings. These are benign and should not be a concern.

AOO Mailing LIsts (was RE: Legality of use question)

2016-07-12 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
All of the public Apache OpenOffice lists are identified on this ASF web page:
.

There are two private lists. You can send appropriate messages to those lists.
Subscription requests are moderated and only members of the associated
activity are subscribed.

The private@ openoffice.apache.org (oo.a.o) list is for use by the Apache
OpenOffice Project Management Committee. It is to be used for request that
need to be handled in confidence, such as personnel matters,
licensing/trademark matters, and any sort of legal concerns. It does not
provide any support of the kind obtained with dev@ oo.a.o or users@ oo.a.o.

The security@ oo.a.o list is used by the Apache OpenOffice Security team,
essentially a subset of the PMC charged with analysis of reported security
exploits and vulnerabilities in the code itself. Messages that are not very
specific to that subject are ignored. See
.

Those are the only private lists of Apache OpenOffice itself. Public- and
private-ist moderators also have a private way to be reached and to communicate
among themselves. For example, users-owner@ oo.a.o reaches the users@ oo.a.o
moderators. There are comparable arrangements for moderation of the Community
Forums.

RE: How to resolve a problem in Open Office

2016-07-11 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Nasrin,

Thank you for describing your specific situation.

If a lock file is retained after you have closed a document, it means that the
document was not saved properly or completely. This could be a result of
shutting down OpenOffice too quickly. The lock file is also protection against
you attempting to open a document that is already open by you.

It is possible to delete a lock file in order for OpenOffice to open the
document again. Do you require advice on how to find and delete the lock file?

RE: difficulty with tiny windows & compatibility with cell phone

2016-07-10 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
 1. There is no version of Apache OpenOffice for Android phones, including the
Samsung Galaxy.

 2. It appears that the Zoom has been accidentally changed. When you open a
document that has this problem, look in the lower right corner of the
OpenOffice window (the status line). You will see a % number and next to that
you will see a slider. Adjust the slider so that the zoom changes to 100% or
any other value that is comfortable for your viewing.

If this works, please reply to the users@openoffice.apache.org to let us know
that problem is solved.

 3. Apache OpenOffice is a free software package provided by volunteers on
their own time. There is no telephone support. The public mailing list you
reached is where volunteers -- other users of the software -- offer their own
support to other users by responses on the mailing list.

Uh no, don't tweet anything.

Please provide more information here at the users list:

 1. What version of Apache OpenOffice?

 2. What operating system and its version?

 3. A bit more on the Calc file: format? Size/complexity? What was happening

 4. And if the file is under 1 Megabyte, is it something you could post as an

[orcmid]

I think this tells most of the story:
.

The code was imported into the Apache OpenOffice source-code tree in 2011.
Since then, it has only been touched in cosmetic ways that don't repair or
update anything. No one has put technical work into it.

Unfortunately, the desirability of this to users is different than their being
the capacity, capability, and commitment of volunteer developers to work on
this.

I think it is safe to say that the project lacks the capacity to work on this
extension and that changing is not foreseeable at this time.

[orcmid]

I have no idea about that. However, LO has access and use of the code carried
in the Apache OpenOffice repository and they could have adapted from that if it
was a better starting point for the current use of the MPL license on
LibreOffice releases.

Also, try entering the value as a formula. E.g., "=5/32" (without quotes), so

What I see there is the following statement at the very beginning:

If you don't have Microsoft Excel 2003 installed, try to use
for example free OpenOffice.org (LibreOffice) Calc to open
.wk4 file and save it as .xls files.

I don't know how to decode the two specific entries under Multiplatform
software, including one specifically about
"Apache OpenOffice Calc (OpenOffice.org Calc)."

I have made a comment on their page about this. I suspect that these are very
old entries - all of the images on the Apache OpenOffice entry there are from
the old OpenOffice.org versions shipped by Sun Microsystems and Oracle. As far
as we can tell, .wk4 was never supported.

RE: WK4 conversion to XLS

Where did you find that in Apache OpenOffice documentation?

Apache OpenOffice only supports .wk1, .wks, and .123 format Lotus 1-2-3 files.

RE: Quick Question

2016-06-24 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
To expand on Rory's answer,

If your password was short and memorable (even though you have forgotten it),
there are utilities that will try better-than-brute-force solutions at opening
password-protected OpenDocument Format documents such as those produced by
Apache OpenOffice.

We do not provide such a utility. Some of them provide simple attacks for
free, may not provide a solution in reasonable time and have to be stopped, and
have premium versions that make better attacks and can still fail.

However, since you probably did not employ a cryptographically-safe password,
such a utility may succeed.

The Apache OpenOffice project does not recommend any such utility. You should
take precautions installing such a tool and use it at your own risk.

Re: e-mail client (code of conduct)

2016-06-11 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
All mailing lists and other properties operated by the Apache Software
Foundation also come under the Foundation's Code of Conduct policy,
.

That and the AOO mailing-list civility policy apply to everyone here.

Everyone should step back from this spat and take a deep breath.

For the record, "You're an idiot and a wussy. Tolerate that" is completely
unacceptable. That should be clear to everyone here.

RE: OPEN OFFICE 4.1.2 uninstall

2016-06-03 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
 1. Start Apache OpenOffice (any application or the dashboard).

 2. On the menu bar, click through Tools > Options ... > OpenOffice > Memory
and under OpenOffice Quickstarter, *remove* the check mark for "Load OpenOffice
during system start-up"

 3. Close OpenOffice.

 4. Restart your PC

 5. When Windows 10 comes back up, you should now be able to uninstall AOO.

RE: Using open office on tablet

2016-05-31 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
We will need to hear from individuals who use this type of tablet configuration
with Apache OpenOffice.

 - Dennis

Meanwhile, here is some general information that may be useful to you.

The AOO project does not directly test for these kinds of configurations,
although the software should be able to be installed and run. Apache
OpenOffice does not provide any touch and small-screen optimizations.

There is no direct conversion from Word document formats to PDF. Apache
OpenOffice would convert from the Word format to its native/internal format and
from there to PDF. Full preservation of Word features and formatting is not
assured in that process. You would need to test whether the fidelity was
sufficient for your purpose.

In the US, I only see specifications for a Mix 300 model with 64GB solid-state
storage.

Considering that the Lenova MIIX 300 comes with a first-year subscription to
Office 365 Personal, it may be preferable to take advantage of Word's ability
to save documents as PDF and also take advantage of the tablet support in that
software, along with the 1TB OneDrive online storage that is part of the Office
365 Personal bundle. I am assuming that the product available in The
Netherlands has those features the same as they are offered in the US.

Since you can always install Apache OpenOffice and verify its use side-by-side
with the Office 365 Personal, that might be a good way to proceed. You would
have a full year to decide whether to renew the Office 365 Personal
subscription after first learning to use what is already integrated in the
product and determining whether you can accomplish your work with AOO alone.

RE: [PROPOSAL][API][WINDOWS]Whether Common Spelling API can be implemented

2016-05-24 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Moving to dev@, BCC to users@

Please continue this discussion on dev@ for technical purposes.

Please provide more information about the Common Spelling API and where its
specification can be found. Also, is there any connection with the indexing
APIs that would allow ODF documents to be full-text searched?

Finally, is the API one that many providers offer as well as many consumers
use, or is there some other model involved. The architecture needs to be
understood.

 - Dennis

More thoughts,

I suspect that the way that AOO integrates writing aids, including spelling
checkers, would not be very compatible. In addition, it would likely involve
silent loading of all of AOO in order to accomplish integration.

The proposal is interesting. However, it might require considerable
refactoring and architectural adjustment in AOO to have the writing aids
accessible by libraries that could be shared between AOO and other Windows
applications.

But without more details, it is not possible to form any assessment at all.

PS: Do not write directly to me. This needs to be a public dev@ discussion. I
will treat replies to me as providing permission to forward them as I see fit.

RE: database file

2016-05-20 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
The screenshot attachment is not preserved by the list.

However, based on what you say, there are a couple of likely cases.

 1. The file is not being opened by OpenOffice Base. You can check that by
opening Base first (using the Apache OpenOffice dashboard that has buttons for
all of the individual applications) and taking the option to open an existing
database file. See if you can find your simple .odb and open it that way.

 2. If (1) fails, your .odb file may have been corrupted and is not being
recognized as an OpenOffice Base file by Apache OpenOffice.

To explore (2) further, please open an issue on the Apache OpenOffice bugzilla
at . You will need to create an account for
yourself using the email address you want to follow the issue with.

You can add the screenshot as an attachment. You can also upload the .odb file
as an attachment of the same issue. Consider whether or not you have
proprietary information in the database before doing that -- the issue
attachment will be public.

If you can't upload the .odb (including it being too large for an attachment)
there are tests you can run yourself. Make a copy of the .odb and rename it to
be a .zip instead of .odb. If a Zip utility can't open it, or if the Test
feature of a Zip utility such as 7-zip or WinZip says the file is damaged or
not a Zip, that confirms the .odb has been corrupted. It is probably not
recoverable.

I covered it with my confirmation of the Writer case, cross-referencing between

I agree, the help is incorrect.

In addition, while the Calc case works if the file is saved as Excel, there is
no case that works for writer.

RE: Custom number format code problem

2016-05-16 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Issue 126827 may be relevant to this also, having to do with the limitations of
how the ODF specification limits what can be recorded in the .odt file.
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126827

Assuming the user is operating with Writer and .odt, a specimen file would help
us see if that is the case.

RE: Thunderbird

2016-05-12 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
According to the linked report and the analysis commissioned from Simon Phipps,
the Apache Software Foundation is not one of the top three under consideration.

Under a section on "Other Alternatives" there is a nice summary about how
projects are operated under the ASF and also limitations to consider. Simon
does not mention what is perhaps the most difficult limitation -- establishing
code provenance and IP clearance under which Thunderbird source releases can be
made under the Apache License. In addition, there are gating conditions on
core developers (so-called initial committers) for the Apache incubation
process. The ASF does not accept "code dumps" and needs some confidence that a
sustainable project is coming over. I assume that it is in Mozilla's interests
as well. The authors and supporters of Thunderbird extensions/themes/add-ins
are also stakeholders in this matter.

RE: OppenOffice converted all my files to another format

2016-04-27 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Also, OpenOffice does not touch existing files in any manner. There is no
automatic conversion of files. Also, .rtf is a Microsoft-specified format.

It sounds as if the File Associations (tying files of a given type to
applications) have been disturbed, if you are on Windows.

Try Robert's suggestion.

Also, be sure to download Apache OpenOffice via this web page:

[REPORT] Issue Clearance Quality through 2016Q1

2016-04-23 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
The analysis on accumulation of issues has been updated to reflect the status
for the first Quarter (January - March) of 2016 (literally, as of 2016-04-08).

The detailed tabulation is in the PDF at <http://s.apache.org/YFT>.

The arrival of new issues has been declining, year over year.

Although the rate of arrivals has declined, the rate of issues remaining open
is consistently in excess of 40% of those reported since OpenOffice became a
full project of the Apache Software Foundation in the last quarter of 2012.

The increased rate for 2016 YTD may simply be a consequence of the short time
those newest issues have been open, relatively speaking.

Issues are not open if they are marked as CLOSED or RESOLVED in some manner.
Typically, open issues are marked UNCONFIRMED or CONFIRMED depending on the
level of analysis that has occurred.

An issue can be RESOLVED as FIXED, meaning that the repair is in hand, even
though a release containing the repair has not been produced yet. Such an
issue may progress to VERIFIED when it is confirmed that the issue is resolved
in a new release, and it will be CLOSED subsequently.

RE: Issue 98998 - AutoFormat style should be re-applied after deleting rows or columns

2016-04-23 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Rod,

I just looked at your new comment on that issue before seeing your message here.

I don't know what "staff member" you are talking about. There haven't been
staff members since Apache OpenOffice started up following a license grant from
Oracle Corporation. All we have are volunteers providing their personal time,
and how that time is prioritized depends on their capacity, competence, and
commitment with respect to any specific situation.

It appears that QA volunteer Edwin Sharp did not answer your last question to
him on 2014-01-06. I have no idea what he meant by his last couple of
comments. He has not been active on the Bugzilla since May of that year.

An issue usually has an indication how and when its status was changed. I am
not clear how or when Issue 98998 was marked RESOLVED - NOT_AN_ISSUE. That
does seem inappropriate.

In any case, there is not enough information there to be clear what the issue
is and whether it involves enhancement to by-design behavior or not. See my
comment following yours.

RE: Change read only files to allow me to edit and save revisions

2016-04-23 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Now that you are accessing the drive remotely, there may be an account issue
for providing anything but read-only access for access over your local network.

Do both of your machines receive only read-only access or is one of them able
to write to the router-attached drive? (This was already asked but you might
not have seen it.)

You might want to look at restoring the drive to your laptop and figuring out a
different sharing option, whether by copying the data to iCloud or some other
shared storage solution that doesn't require both machines to be on to share
files across them.

It might be possible to populate a network-accessible drive in a way that works
better than moving an attached drive to the network after population. That's
an operating-system and network file-sharing issue and not something that
OpenOffice solves. OpenOffice just uses what is visible via the computer
operating system and account being used.

There are also settings that you can use to control this case. In Tools >

RE: Will not print

2016-04-15 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Don't attempt to print using the print button.

Instead, Click File > Print and on the General tab see what printer is
selected. If it is not the OfficeJet Pro, find the OfficeJet Pro in the list
and select it. (Calc may have remembered the previous printer that you used.)
If this works, save the spreadsheet again to see if that changes the default
for next time.

If you do not see the OfficeJet Pro in the list, there is a problem with it
being found. Then more troubleshooting is required.

Let us know if changing the File > Print General tab Printer selection works.

RE: Default behaviour with links to other documents

2016-04-14 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
This behavior is a result of a security-vulnerability mitigation that was
introduced in Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2. See
.

The remedy that was used is not very nuanced. I believe that the Tools >
Options > OpenOffice Calc > General > Updating options are ignored and "On
request" is performed instead of "Always."

You can verify that.

See Bugzilla Issue 126641,
.

If you are careful to use the workaround only when working with spreadsheets of
your own creation and not obtained from others, the adjustment that Andrea
Pescetti describes might work for you, even though it talks about macros. Try
it.

With regard to the notification about whether updating from links was
successful or not, we probably would require that to be there, simply because
it is the only way someone might see that unexpected link updating is happening
when part of a covert action. That should be treated as a separate issue for
further consideration. That is not going to happen so easily.

Kathelijne,

The address users@openoffice.apache.org is a public mailing list with archives
that preserve all mail sent to the list. Your original mail, and the one I am
replying to is not received by an individual but the entire set of subscribers
to the list. The archive is available for folks who may have similar problems
or who want to find out what different solutions have been offered.

It is unfortunate that you did not understand users@ is a public list. It is
for community support among users who have problems and/or expertise to share
with the full community. All participants are volunteers.

Since the communications you refer to happened two years ago, they have been
seen by many people already and the archive you link to has long since been
preserved in places not under our control. That Google found it indicates how
visible that information has been all this time. Google and other search

It is difficult to see what can be done that will make a difference at this
point.

2016-03-30 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Thanks Hagar,

Also, for users on Windows 10, there is a built-in backup service that
timestamps the backed-up files, so you can have a series of previous versions
of a file and should be able to find a good one in that history if there has
been a subsequent mishap.

The backups can be directed to an attached USB Drive, providing recovery of
documents in the case of catastrophic PC or primary disk failure also.

The backup does not require attention once setup or, if for some reason, the
backup becomes full. It also doesn't appear to interfere with ongoing computer
usage at all.

In addition, one can obtain information on SourceForge status by following
twitter account @sfnet_ops

These are generic, generally, but they may be helpful when there appears to be
a problem obtaining Apache OpenOffice downloads.

RE: a question about docx files.

2016-03-15 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Sony,

Thank you for your comments.

Yes, this is a desirable feature. I don't think there is any longer any
serious question about that.

The reality is that Apache OpenOffice, a volunteer-developed software product,
does not have the means to provide the feature at this time and cannot plan on
it.

If that changes, there will be prominent notice.

RE: a question about docx files.

2016-03-15 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Nasrin Khaksar,

Thank you for your request.

Apache OpenOffice does not produce docx files. There is no effort to provide
docx output at this time.

There are free products that do feature interoperable support for docx and the
other OOXML formats (xslx, pptx, etc.).

Users who make us of such products can give suggestions based on their
experience. I do not use any of those for working in docx so I have no
informed recommendations.

Good fortune in your quest.

Posting Alert Message Experimentation

2016-03-11 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
That didn't work very well. Especially since the two services were back up
relatively quickly, faster than the messages were of any use.

For those who want to check status, you can use http://status.apache.org/>
yourselves. You can also check Local Project Services at
<http://status.apache.org/pubsub/manage.cgi>. The Open Office Forums and
OpenOffice Wiki are listed under "Local Project VMs." Confluence Wiki and
Bugzilla (OpenOffice) are under "Infra-managed services."

Downloads are served by the SourceForge mirror system and status is not handled
by Apache Infrastructure.

RE: crisis needs help frecover legal document

2016-03-11 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
I have examined the file that juliodarican348 provided.

The document sent as an email attachment is neither corrupted nor encrypted.
It opens correctly without difficulty. It was produced using Apache OpenOffice
4.1.1 on Windows by Julio Wright on 2016-03-10T23:24 (2016-03-11T04:24Z).

I examined the components in the .odt Zip package. The file content consists
entirely of text paragraphs having nothing but continuous runs of the symbol
"#".

There is nothing to recover in that file.

RE: Encrypted Calc file got corrupted

2016-02-27 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Since the file is encrypted, can you upload it somewhere where one of us can
examine it? We do not need to know the password. In fact, it might not be
useful at all.

I am assuming that the corruption message happens immediately and you are not
offered an opportunity to decrypt it.

This can result when a file is not saved completely on exiting OpenOffice
and/or shutting down the computer. You can send the link for accessing it to
secur...@openoffice.apache.org and I will see it.

If the file is actually corrupted, it will probably not be decryptable,
especially if the *last* part of the file, which has the manifest of its parts,
is lost or damaged. The manifest holds parameters that must be known, as well
as the password, in order to accomplish decryption.

RE: Updates

2016-02-26 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
You speak of root and I assume that means you are using a Linux version of AOO
4.1.2?

The extension procedure should be the same for all platforms. I checked the
procedure using AOO 4.1.2 (on Windows 10) and here is what my experience is:

 1. The notice comes up when I open AOO Writer. It invites a click for
"further information."

 2. I click on the download button (small button with downward facing arrow
that the notice points to).

 3. A dialog box labeled "Extension Update" opens and there is a checked name
of an available extension (e.g., the Version 2016.02.01 English spelling and
hyphenation dictionaries and thesaurus ...).

 4. Yes, the button at the bottom of the dialog says "Install". This is
inaccurate. There are no automatic installs in Apache OpenOffice.

5.If I click on the Install button, I am taken to a web page,
, that describes the
extension and provides a Download button for it. There is also a list of
available version, starting with the most-recent, with available downloads.
There are instructions on how to complete the download and install the
extension.

QUESTIONS

 A. Are you not seeing the dialog in (3)?

 B. Is your concern that (4) is inaccurate?

 C. Is the procedure at the web page, (5) clear?

 D. Is your request that there be an automatic Install of updates?

There are some simple steps we might be able to take to clarify this, as first
steps, without changing the actual procedure.

First, help us understand the specific problem you are observing and what you
are asking for.

RE: problem loading office

2016-02-12 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Four questions:

 1. What is the complete text (title, etc.) of the message window that you
receive.

 2. What operating system and its version are you using.

 3. Did you use the uninstall provision of your operating system or did you
uninstall in some other manner?

 4. Did you download via http://www.openoffice.org/download/ and did you wait
for the download to start without clicking anything else on the page that says
"Download of openofficeorg.mirror will start in ... seconds...". You should
have then downloaded a file whose name begins "Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.2_... ."

Please answer by reply to users@openoffice.apache.org so that other users can
help work on this with you.

RE: Reyes find & replace not working

2016-01-31 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Remember, unless a hard line break is added to text, there are no line breaks
in the paragraphs of text, even though they are reflowed across multiple lines.
The reflow into lines is not by line breaks, it is only in the layout. The
regular expression doesn't see those, methinks.

Could that be the problem?

The Community Forum, although a bit more organized and curated, might be along
the lines you are thinking of:

There is also a Wiki, although it is not so crowd-sourced as the original wiki

It turns out that wikis do have to be curated by someone in order to be
organized in a way where others can find their way in, etc.

RE: Is it your official application for Windows Phone?

2016-01-26 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
[BCC Apache OpenOffice Project Management Committee]

Juri,

The Windows Store applications "OpenOffice Writer" and "OpenOffice Text Viewer"
are not produced by the Apache OpenOffice project.

They are not the "official" application.

Although it is permissible for others to build versions of Apache OpenOffice
that are their own custom products, there are some formalities involved and it
is helpful that there be no confusion with distributions provided by the AOO
project itself. It is not clear at all what relationship these two apps have
to Apache OpenOffice.

I see that the listings in the Store link to http://www.openoffice.org as the
web site for these applications. Terms of Use are listed as "All rights
reserved" and the support email address is to
openoffice.windows.supp...@yahoo.com, not an address for this project.

If and when Windows Store applications are available from the project itself,
be assured they will be featured prominently on the openoffice.org web site,
along with distributions made available in other app stores.

Thank you for your report,

 - Dennis

RE: Spam (8.451):R: Assistence required for opening files in Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2.

2016-01-25 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Let me be get something clear first.

You are talking about a document that was protected against writing, but not
protected against reading, is that correct?

Or do you mean fully protected, so that they can't be used by anyone without
presenting the password?

If these were created in Word, what version of Word was used? (2016, 2013,
2010, 2007, earlier?)

What format is the document saved in (.doc, .docx, .odt)?

Apache OpenOffice is not able to handle all of the different formats with which
passwords are set on Word documents. It will matter which version was used,
the format, and how much is protected.

RE: Trojan Download

2016-01-25 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Setup-40641183 is not part of Apache OpenOffice.

Delete whatever you downloaded.

Go to .

Make sure the operating system, language, and version (4.1.2) appear.

Click "Download full installation."

On the next page, DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING on the page. Do not click anything
that says START DOWNLOAD or DOWNLOAD NOW.

Instead, just wait for your browser to offer you a download of
"Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.2_Win_x86_install_en-US.exe (134MB).

Select Save at that time. It should download and also be security scanned.

If that still causes a malware detection, let us know.
