i believe that openoffice is not stable as microsoft office.
and its a common problem in this program.
but i believe that you should report the bug for openoffice developers.
i had some files that when i wanted to open with libreoffice, the
result was crashing.
i reported the bug to libreoffice developers.
thanks God, they resolved the bugs for me.
and openning all of my files using libreoffice without crashing became possible.
when you made account and reported the bug, dont forget to attach your
file and remove sensitive informations if you have such informations
in your file.

hello.
if your files are locked and say the files are locked because they are
used by another program
and ask you that whether you want to open them normally or open as readonly,
just in the folder that you placed your files, find and delete locked
files and you can open your files again as normal!

which operating system do you use?
if you use windows vista and later,
you can find property of your file and in the security tab, check
previous version to returns previous version of your file.
i am not familiar with other operating systems, but i believe that
they should have a solution like this.
also you can use recovery softwares.
be sure that in libreoffice tools options,
load-save, general,
Save AutoRecovery information every:
and Always create backup copy
be checked.

i forgot to add openoffice is one opensource program that everyone
that know programming, can join the developers, add new features or
fix bugs.
but other office programs are closed source and you have not
permission to change the codes and sourcecodes are not available for
download.

you can download and install openoffice in many computer that you like.
but premium office programs, surely are not free, you should pay the
money, activate the program and only you can install in one computer
or at least, you have limitation in numbers that you can install

if you use windows vista and later,
just find properties orf your files and select previous versions, if
previous versions of your files was suitable for you!
openoffice in these years, had only some bug fixes, so i dont think
that major problem occur in this program because of stability and not
including new features and major changes.

you can double click on installer file of openoffice and then choose modify.

supporting openGL in openoffice

hello every one.
i read openoffice readme file and realized that openoffice should
supports openGl and if someone has problem starting openoffice, should
disable opengl in openoffice menu tools options openoffice views.
but i did not find anything in settings of openoffice in opengl!
whats the problem?
how can i find this option and realize that does my openoffice support
it or not?
i have windows xp and openoffice 4.1.3

i try to answer two questions.
first, if you cant start openoffice, you can try repairing and then try.
if your issue persists, you can uninstall and reinstall again.
these kind of problems occures because when openGL enabled and i think
if i am correct, openGL is not supported by openoffice. am i right?
and for your question that your files are changed,
if you use windows vista and later, you can select properties of your
files, then security tab and then activate previous versions and then
okay to confirm it.

i also learned that odt file is zip archive not one file!
i read about docx before and did not know about odt file!
also, i recommend to backup your safe and working files to prevent
damage and corruption in the future.
because anytime that you incounter problem using your file, you can
easily restore them from previous backup.
or use previous version of your file in properties, security.

did you try to repair openoffice via its installer file or control panel?
in which version, did you see this problem?
i tested openoffice versions 4.1.0 until 4.1.3 and did not have this problem.
i did not test new versions of openoffice until now!

but if you delete lock files, you can open them in normal edit mode.

i think that the last supported version of java for windows xp is
version 7 of java.
openoffice requires java base, but you can use other component without
installation of java.

in openoffice tools menu and options, find load-save and then general
and Save AutoRecovery information every: which is checked by default.
you can reduce the time from 15 minutes to less minutes, (maybe 10 or
even 5 minutes) to prevent loss of data.
you can even activate Always create backup copy by space key and okay
to save your settings.

controlled access folder is a new feature that microsoft added to the
windows ten creatur update in the recent months to protect the users
from ransomware which lock the files of users and demand ransom to
hackers to unlock them.
by default, it protects my documents and some essential folders which
exist in all computers and laptops.
you can add folders to its default list or remove the folders (just
the folders which you added to the list before).
even you can disable this feature, but its a security risk and make
your folders and datas vulnerable to ransomwares and unwanted changes.

 One way your Mac makes sure you’re (relatively safe) from rogue apps
is what’s called Gatekeeper. By default, this bit of software only
allows you to install verified apps from the Mac App Store on your
Mac. What if, however, you want to download software from a Mac
developer who doesn’t distribute their software on the Mac App Store?
You’ll need to bypass Gatekeeper in order to do so.
Here’s how to do that safely.
Launch your System Preferences app and head to the Security & Privacy
preference pane. You have three choices here. You can set Gatekeeper
to Allow applications downloaded from the Mac App Store, the Mac App
Store and identified developers, or Anywhere. The safest of these
options is obviously the first one, as it will keep any software not
downloaded via the Mac App Store from running on your Mac.
 Keep either of the top two options enabled, and when you download any
app that isn’t from the Mac App Store, nor from an identified
developer, your Mac won’t let you run it.
If you want to bypass this security feature, find the offending app,
and right click on it. That’s a two-finger click on a Macbook
trackpad, a Control-click on a single button mouse, or the actual
right mouse button on a multi-button mouse.
Choose Open in the pop up menu, and then choose Open on the resulting
dialog box, which will tell you that the app you’re trying to open is
from an unidentified developer. Once you choose to Open it this way,
the app will no longer trigger a Gatekeeper warning, so be sure you
know and trust the developer you got the app from.

which error message do you recieve exactly?
is it lock of your files which you opened previously or wants to
recover your file?
if its lock of your previous files which you opened and cant open your
files again, you can simply delete your lock file and open your normal
files.
in the second case, you can use recovery of your files, windows
previous versions or shadow explorer if your files are corrupted now
and cant open them anymore.

this maybe become happen when your elictricity has problem.
your computer turned of unexpectedly and any failure maybe occured
because of immediate and unusual loss of power for your pc etc.

if it gives error again, you can completely uninstall and reinstall it again.

files by default.
another solution is that open the installer file of openoffice, then
next and modify.
use custom installation to change your desire settings.
you can define which kind of microsoft files should be opened by
openoffice by default.
you can select between microsoft word, excel and powerpoint.
do the process until finish and activate it.

quick starter is installed by default when you install openoffice.
but its not activated by default!
do the following:
open for example openoffice writer,,
then tools options, openoffice, memory and uncheck Load OpenOffice
during system start-up if its activated for you!

you can not change lock files.
openoffice make lock of the files that you open and when you close the
files, the lock files are automaticly deleted.
just find export as pdf in the file menu, set your desire settings in
its different tabs and save your files!

i heard some programs that can lock your computer to not available for others.
for example: some of them record your fingerprint or some of them you
can use your flash to lock or unlock.
but you told that your computer is stolen and i think that now gps can
help you to find its location.

if you mean, 4.1.3, its the last version until now and 4.1.4 will be
release in the near future maybe in this month!
if you use the older version, i think that you can update it easily.
i dont think that some problems happen for you in this regard.
you can install it like any normal programs.
if you use windows, you can select between typical and custom
installation and continue the process.
i dont think that you loos your data, but you can make backup of your
files for more safety.

also if you want to all kinds of for example: word, excel, powerpoint
all of there extentions should open by default by openoffice, do my
recommendation.
also you can use custom installation in the time of installing your
program for the first time, or updating the next version, in the
custom installation, you have many options.
selecting which component of openoffice you need to install, (although
openoffice is integrated package) but selection of component is still
possible.
i am not sure whether its useful or may causes proble, but one time i
tested and only installed writer.
for me it released only near 20 mb of my hard disk!
also you can select which optional component you need to install and
finally you can select or deselect association of microsoft files by
openooffice.

default.
these are include, microsoft word, excel and  powerpoint.
activate any of the checkboxes of these three group of files that you need.
continue the process until finish.

Another advantage of the Mac App Store, besides pausing downloads,
safe uninstalls, and easy re-downloads of Mac OS X apps, is the safety
of knowing that anything in the Mac App Store has been vetted by
Apple.
 One way your Mac makes sure you’re (relatively safe) from rogue apps
is what’s called Gatekeeper. By default, this bit of software only
allows you to install verified apps from the Mac App Store on your

downloaded via the Mac App Store from running on your Mac.
 Keep either of the top two options enabled, and when you download any
app that isn’t from the Mac App Store, nor from an identified
developer, your Mac won’t let you run it.
If you want to bypass this security feature, find the offending app,
and right click on it. That’s a two-finger click on a Macbook
trackpad, a Control-click on a single button mouse, or the actual
right mouse button on a multi-button mouse.
Choose Open in the pop up menu, and then choose Open on the resulting
dialog box, which will tell you that the app you’re trying to open is
from an unidentified developer. Once you choose to Open it this way,
the app will no longer trigger a Gatekeeper warning, so be sure you
know and trust the developer you got the app from.

or saved informations before crashing?
see openoffice tools, options, load-save, general save auto recovery
information every and also always create backup copy.

windows has the option for recovery of file and restore to the
previous state, i believe that mac also should has such option or at
least free external application for recovery lost data!

if you use windows, vista and newer, you can find the properties of
your document and in the security tab, activate previous versions to
have previous versions of your file which had no problem.

did you test your file with libreoffice?

be sure that in openoffice tools, options, load-save, general, Save
AutoRecovery information every: be checked and even you can reduce the
time for saving the informations.

even you can activate Always create backup copy to prevent loss of
your data in the future!

i read system requirement of windows seven and realized that in all
windows versions of windows, (7, 8 and even windows ten 1511) the
minimum system requirements for them is one gb ram!
for 32 bit i think 2 gb is good, but for 64 bit it requires more!

i recommend that do search the name of your files in the search box of
your windows, i hope you find them easily!
also make sure that in the tools, options load-save, general, Save
AutoRecovery information every: be checked and even reduce its time

i think that openoffice installs by default spell checker.
for example: if you install english uk version of openoffice, it
installs spell checker by default and you dont need to download
separately.
but if you installed other language than english, you need to install
language pack to have aditional languages and dictionaries.

yes, openoffice can only read docx, but cant save the changes in docx file.
i mean that you can read your docx files, but even if you add or
change one character! you should save it as doc, html, odt etc to give
them to microsoft office users.
libreoffice i am sure is the only opensource office program that can
save as docx!

hello.
your files maybe become corrupted, moved to another locations or even deleted.
if you have the icon of your file and you can click on it, use mouse
right click, property, then if you use windows and newer version than
xp, find previous version, and press space key to activate it and also
confirm it with okay button to restore it to previous version.

some questions about openoffice writer:

hello every one.
i have some questions about using openoffice writer and wish that
someone can help me.
first, i dont have any pdf reader.
because they are not accessible for blind users and also they dont
support persian language very well.
how should i open my pdf books using openoffice?
2- how can i embed phonts in openoffice for people who have only
microsoft office read them without problem?
3- which features are existed that libreoffice supports internally and
openoffice needs installation of extensions?
and 4- can i know exact date or even estimated date for releasing
openoffice version 4.1.4?

hi.
if you need to use microsoft publisher format for your work,
libreoffice supports it.
you can open publisher format with libreoffice, but i did not test it
and dont know how can you edit them and how is the quality.
