yes, I didn't measure... I supposed it ;-)

The bigger problem I had is if you do a forced shutdown (click twice on
the stop icon) with the rhev-agent installed the /etc/nologin file gets
set due to the delayed shutdown. Nobody can login when you bring the
system back up until root goes in and removes the file.

you can right click and choose stop directly, without asking for shutdown
 first.

Are you referring as the initial step or as the second one?
In case of firts step one chooses stop, what does it happen at VM
level? Is it a direct power off?

Best is understood from an example:
- we give a user a quota (with x CPU, y memory and z disk space)
- a user can create one VirtualMachine with all the resources, or more
VirtualMachines with smaller resources.
- we want to give a user a pool of IPs. He should not use other IPs. If
he uses other IP it should not be routable.

Is there a solution for this problem?

Normal solution:

* mirror port on your switch which is forwarded to a NIDS
and search for unauthoried IPs MACs pairs

Software foo can to everything solution:

* libvirt know nwfilter
* vdsm has hooks

thus combination of your own nwfilters, custom properties and vdsm
hooks.

Or raise a RFE so we could assing nwfilters to a VM.

my take is that as long as you use an external ip allocation mechanism
(dhcp/static) - its up to you to limit.
once engine will do the allocations (IPAM, or L3), then quota's for IP
addresses could be relevant.

Now I would like to add host (node) based on ovirt-node 2.6.1, installation is

The problem starts with registration to engine. I dont know if the issue is on

from your question I understand that you are currently using ovirt 3.2.1 rather
than master [to answer Itamar's question from the previous e-mail], and that
explains
the slowness of the portals on IE8 that you are experiencing.

Please note that on oVirt master, the performance improvement patches for IE8
affect
only the user portal; unfortunately, the admin portal still suffers from
performance
problems on IE8.

with regards to the master release accessibility: I am not sure if we have a
master
release; you can build oVirt-engine directly from the code-repo by following
the
instructions in the following wiki-page:
http://www.ovirt.org/Build_and_Install_Engine_RPM

@Itamar/others: do we have some kind of a nightly/weekly/occasionally

ovirt builds/rpms? the IE8 performance patches were introduced to oVirt master
on March 1
(almost 2 months ago), so anything rebased from ovirt master at that point in

yes, there is a nightly build (it changes every night...)

set nightly to enabled (maybe need to disable the others).
that's for fedora - I think we have one for .el6 now with 3.2.1

Yes my first error was to put SD into maintenance, that I don't know

Next time I will have better doing what you say

But it remains something strange (to me) this workflow:

not cleared and when it comes back up only root can login until the
 /etc/nologin file is cleared.

hmmm, Vinzenz - should guest agent clear that on guest startup, if guest
 agent set this at shutdown?
It's not guest agent, shutdown does it. It behaves the same on real hw

Is their some some reason the shutdown time is set to 30 seconds
(rounded up to 1 minute in the code)? Are there any know issues with
 setting this to 0?

Vinzenz - if we are rounding up - is this a bug?
possibly yes

Is this the right way to change it to 0?
 psql engine postgres -c update vdc_options set option_value = '0' where
 option_name = 'VmGracefulShutdownTimeout';
notmally the grace period is there for other users to react befor shutdown
starts. I wonder if it's that much relevant here.., if we assume single user
most of the time 0 (i.e. now) should be ok

Re: [Users] Starting VM gets paused

is the vm preallocated or thin provision disk type?

This VM has 3 disks :
- first disk to host the windows system : Thin provision
- second disk to store some data : Preallocated
- third disk to store some more data : Thin provision

I'm realizing that amongst the 15 VMs, only this one and another one
that is stopped are using preallocated disks.
I'm regularly migrating some VMs (and stopping and starting and playing
with them) with no issue, and they all are using thin provisioned disks!

Could this be a common factor of the problem?

also, can you please attach engine, vdsm, libvirt and the vm's qemu
logs?

Relevant logs :

Ok, I'm in the process of collecting the logs and posting them in a
useable manner.

More to come.

Ok, once again, I ran a test and observed the relevant logs.
I tried to isolate the time frames, but it may be long for vdsm.log

Here they are :
* /var/log/libvirt/qemu/serv-chk-adm3.log
http://pastebin.com/JVKMSmxD
* /var/log/libvirtd.log
http://pastebin.com/sWGDCqNh
* /var/log/vdsm/vdsm.log (the BIG one)
http://pastebin.com/bevTEhym

What I can add to help you help me, is that :
- I saw that all my VM appear as tainted. I did not know what that meant
(but RTFMed since), and this does not appear to disturb the other VMs
- Many VMs including the problematic one have been imported from
ovirt-v2v with now such issue.
- This particular VM was also imported, but the starting point was a
vmdk or ova single file.
- Two additionnal data disks were added
- As I said, this is the only running VM stored as pre allocated.

Regards,

One suggestion : I see no obvious errors in the log files. Could this
paused state happen due to a VM's kernel panic?

is this still relevant?

if you are asking on qemu behavior then yes.
ovirt doesn't support this type of snapshot (with state) tet, and is
using qcow2 with external backing file (which allows to use a raw image
for the base one).

there is active work to add snapshot with ram.

* snapshots is only for block devices, are done offline

why not nfs/posix/localfs?

* live snapshot is only for block devices, can be done online

non block as well.

* snapshot tree with branches is not supported now

   am I right?

apart from a special state of previewing an older snapshot, no.

So my understanding there is no way to have a photo, in qemu language
_checkpoint_, in VMWare language _snapshot_ without interupting the VM.
Am I right? Any comments?

live snapshot with ram should cover this. interruption to vm is supposed
to be similar to live migration - not noticeable (YMMV).

This topic is quite confusing while searching Internet.

No, only a few lines shown for applications and no wan option shown in
user portal...
I compiled ovirt-guest-agent service for windows XP and Windows7
A quick command line example of using rest/api to get applications?

Applications aren't accessible using REST-API.
But it would be great if this would be added as a feature in 3.3... :)

interesting. michael - any reason for this?

the overhead of sending a bulk of applications when listing vms at /vms,
but this can be implemented as emulated sub-collection under vm (as we did
for /cdroms), i've filed [1] for this.

[1] https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=926928

as a workaround, command line can be done at host level via vdsClient -s 0
getAllVmStats

It remains the problem to use wan options in oVirt.
Can I execute some test as in
http://www.ovirt.org/How_to_Connect_to_SPICE_Console_Without_Portal

how to translate these wan options if I want to try this way?
Thanks
Gianluca

spice-devel - what's the command line option for virt-viewer to tweak
spice wan behavior?

On RHEV 3.1,after a disk was successfully live migrated from one storage
domain to another,I noticed that on the Admin Portal,it was being reported
as a Thin allocated disk.It was originally a preallocated disk.Is that
expected?

Thanks,
