Upload the iso to one of the data domains you use for your VMs.

For the initial installation of the operating system in a virtual machine, you
need to mount an ISO image that is located in the storage domain of the NFS
type (ISO function). If the NFS server is located within a high-speed LAN (one
data center), then there are no problems, if you need to connect an image to a
remote site (second data center) with slow channels, then difficulties arise.

2023-08-28 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
I'm not sure what you mean by your "example", nor why you would need a
dedicated ISO Storage Domain, when that practice was ended a while ago.

I have several "datacenters", all using iSCSI and FC SAN storage, but I keep an
NFS storage domain available to copy ISO's and templates, and to move VMs
(actually their disks) between datacenters, as needed.

Is it possible in oVirt 4.3 for each Data Center to create a separate ISO
Domain Storage, with NFS type, on one of the hosts belonging to this Data
Center? For example, in the case of connecting a remote site in a separate Data
Center to an existing Engine through slow network links.

[ovirt-users] Re: Expand the disk space of the hosting engine

2023-01-02 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
You allocated a 100G storage domain.

Within that storage domain, you allocated a 50G disk to hold the disk image.

Just like any other storage domain, you can create additional disks. I have
seen warnings, for going over 80% allocated within this storage domain.

When building the Self-Hosted-Engine, I specify 75GB when asked about the size
of the disk to create, and then use LVM to add the unused storage of the disk
to the root and swap logical volumes.

You should be able to add a second disk of about 25G to the SHE, and use LVM to
add it to the existing volume groups and expand the existing logical volumes.

Of course, I have not tested this.

The second question is that if the allocated 100G is also full, how should I

[ovirt-users] Re: Expand the disk space of the hosting engine

2022-12-30 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
I'm not talking about extending the initial disk.

When I build a self-hosted-engine, I also use a 100GiB storage domain, but when
the install process requests the image, I use the provided image, and when it
ask for the disk size, I state it as 75GiB. (The SHE install has an issue when
exceeding 80%)

The install procedure creates a 28GiB disk image, and the remaining space
between 28GiB and 75GiB is unallocated. It is this space I am creating another
physical volume on, and using this physical volume to expand the volume group,
and logical volume, to expand the root filesystem.

I personally have an issue with expanding root filesystems across multiple
disks.I haven't done it, and won't make a recommendation until I do.

achieve your goal.

You are limited to both the size of the storage domain you created for the
hosted-engine, and the disk you specified during installation.

The only option is unused free space between the installation image and the
disk you created.

Outside of that, your next option would to do a dump and then restore onto a
larger storage domain, with a larger disk specified.

Not a fun thing, since I’ve recently had to move ten datacenters to new
storage, using this method.

Up until now, we've been using iSCSI as the storage on all of our datacenters,

We've just setup our first datacenter with Fiber Channel storage, and no
connectivity to our iSCSI storage. For this move we have fallen back to using
NFS storage domains, to move the necessary VMs from datacenter ONE to
datacenter TWO.

The bulk of the transfer went fine, but for about one dozen two disk VMs both
disks did not get moved at the same time. So now I have one dozen VMs with
only one drive on datacenter TWO and the other drive as an un-importable VM on
the NFS storage partition, mounted on datacenter TWO.

Any hints on how I "merge" these two, back into one function VM?

Space for deleted files are only recovered when all references to that space
are removed. This includes the directory reference, and any open file-handles
to the file.

The is a popular trick for a self-deleting scratch file. Create a file, open
file-handle to it, and then remove the file. The open file-handle can then be
written to, and read from, as long as you like, but when the file-handle is
closed, explicitly or implicitly, the space is automatically recovered.

[ovirt-users] Re: Migrate Hosted-Engine from one NFS mount to another NFS mount

2022-02-23 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
I’ve always been told that migrating self-hosted-engine storage was a backup,
shutdown, and rebuild from backup procedure.

In my iscsi environment it has never worked. (More due to the history of my
environment, than the procedure itself.)

Since we have too many hosts in a datacenter, we’ve choose to go another
method, attrition.

I’m splitting of clusters into their own datacenters. Once I’m down to the
last host, running the original SHE, I will simply power it down, reload it,
and re-add it to one of my new datacenters.

Subject: [ovirt-users] Migrate Hosted-Engine from one NFS mount to another NFS
mount

Hello,

I am currently running Ovirt 4.2.5.3-1.el7 with an Hosted-Engine running on
nfs-based storage.

I am needing to migrate the backend NFS store for the Hosted-Engine to a new
share.

Is there specific documentation for this procedure? I see multiple references
to a general procedure involving backing-up the existing install and then
re-installing and restoring the backup. Is there any way to make a more clean
change of the configuration?

Thanks,
Brian Ismay

[ovirt-users] Re: ovirtmgmt VLAN and IP Change

2022-02-19 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
I had to do this for a number of hosts last year.

I put the host into maintenance, and then removed it.

I used 'nmtui' to change the hostname. (Changing hostname suffix from two
digits to three digits) (Probably could have used hostnamectl)

I change directory to /var/lib/vdsm/persistence/netconf/nets/ and edited the
appropriate files.

I rebooted the host.

I logged back in, and checked the results.

I re-added the host to the datacenter.

Hello All,

So due to some issues with provisioning new networks in our lab, I have to use
a different VLAN in for my ovirt cluster.

Cluster -> 3 Hosts (Hyperconverged)
What I want to do is essentially change the Ovirtmgmt interface to another vlan
but also change the IP Schemes, I wont be needing to change the storage network
vlans.

I am just wondering how this is done safely.
Can I through the engine, put the host 1 by 1 into maint mode and manually
adjust the IPs and apply and reconfigure the switch port? What about the IP
that the engine has set or would I change that manually through console once I
change the ovirtmgmt vlan on all the nodes?

Due to the company's internal security policy, I now need to change the root

Many of the other reports worked fine, with only a few similar errors.
Is this caused by version incompatibility?
After all, 4.4 in the original document was replaced with 4.3 before the import.

Hi Marko,

I've tested this myself as I like playing with various Grafana use-cases and
following steps allow you to set up Grafana Monitoring for your oVirt 4.3
environment and re-use all Grafana Dashboards from latest oVirt 4.4 on a
previous release.

1. Allowing Grafana to connect to oVirt DWH database (Data Warehouse)

Login to the oVirt engine 4.3 and create a user "grafana" with password
"grafana" that will get a read-only access to the ovirt_engine_history database
and will be able to use public schema

# su - postgres -c 'scl enable rh-postgresql10 bash'
# psql -U postgres -c "CREATE ROLE grafana WITH LOGIN ENCRYPTED PASSWORD
'grafana';" -d ovirt_engine_history
# psql -U postgres -c "GRANT CONNECT ON DATABASE ovirt_engine_history TO
grafana;"
# psql -U postgres -c "GRANT USAGE ON SCHEMA public TO grafana;"
ovirt_engine_history

Generate the rest of the permissions that will be granted to the newly created
user and save them to a file:

# psql -U postgres -c "SELECT 'GRANT SELECT ON ' || relname || ' TO grafana;'
FROM pg_class JOIN pg_namespace ON pg_namespace.oid = pg_class.relnamespace
WHERE nspname = 'public' AND relkind IN ('r', 'v');" --pset=tuples_only=on
ovirt_engine_history > grant.sql

Use the file you created in the previous step to grant permissions to the newly
created user:
# psql -U postgres -f grant.sql ovirt_engine_history

Remove the file you used to grant permissions:
# rm grant.sql

Exit the postgres user shell by pressing Ctrl+d

Add the following lines for the newly created user to
/var/opt/rh/rh-postgresql10/lib/pgsql/data/pg_hba.conf preceding the line
beginning local all all

hostovirt_engine_history grafana 0.0.0.0/0 md5
hostovirt_engine_history grafana ::0/0   md5

Reload postgres service
# systemctl reload rh-postgresql10-postgresql

2. Installing Grafana

You can install Grafana directly on the oVirt Engine machine (this is how it's
done in oVirt 4.4) or on a separate machine. Following steps shows how you can
install Grafana on a Oracle Linux 7 server. Note: Oracle provides Grafana in
the OLCNE yum repository - you only need to install the repository definition
package to pickup Grafana and it's dependencies.

# yum install oraclelinux-release-el7
# yum install oracle-olcne-release-el7
# yum-c

Hey man, what's up?

So... I use 4 FC cables (2 per controller) connected from Storage to FC Switch.
From this FC Switch I connect my hosts with 4 FC cables.
The more cables from Storage to Switch, the more throughout you will get.

That way I can use multipath. So when I drop an FC cable or a Storage
controller, I wouldn't lose connection.
In this way it is also possible to use all virtualization technologies, such as
LUN migration between Storage and/or Live Migration.

An example of multipath:

following steps allow you to set up Grafana Monitoring for your oVirt 4.3
environment and re-use all Grafana Dashboards from latest oVirt 4.4 on a

# psql -U postgres -c "GRANT CONNECT ON DATABASE ovirt_engine_history TO

# psql -U postgres -c "GRANT USAGE ON SCHEMA public TO grafana;"
ovirt_engine_history

Generate the rest of the permissions that will be granted to the newly created
user and save them to a file:

# psql -U postgres -c "SELECT 'GRANT SELECT ON ' || relname || ' TO grafana;'

Add the following lines for the newly created user to
/var/opt/rh/rh-postgresql10/lib/pgsql/data/pg_hba.conf preceding the line
beginning local all all

hostovirt_engine_history grafana 0.0.0.0/0 md5
hostovirt_engine_history grafana ::0/0   md5

Reload postgres service
# systemctl reload rh-postgresql10-postgresql

2. Installing Grafana

# yum install oraclelinux-release-el7
# yum install oracle-olcne-release-el7
# yum-config-manager --enable ol7_optional_latest ol7_olcne11
# yum install grafana
# systemctl enable --now grafana-server

3. Adding oVirt DWH database as Data Source in Grafana

Login to Grafana (default port 3000) and navigate to Configuration ->
DataSources and click on Add Data Source button.

Select PostgreSQL source and use the following settings (adjust the Host IP
address to match your oVirt Engine IP but do not change the Name):
Name: oVirt DWH
Host: your-engine-ip-address:5432
user: grafana
pass: grafana
SSL mode: disable

4. Importing Dashboards from oVirt 4.4

Download Grafana Dashboards from oVirt 4.4 repository:
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-dwh/tree/master/packaging/conf/grafana-dashboards

You can now import them in Grafana by navigating to Create -> Import and
clicking on Upload .json file or by simply pasting JSON content.

I've tested this on my OLVM/oVirt 4.3 and works perfectly well.

Have fun!

I’m always keep oVirt Engine up to date, so my only concern if at any point it

[ovirt-users] Re: Q: Node Upgrade Path

2021-07-08 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
If the hardware is old, and won't support EL8, the best option is to update to
oVirt 4.3.10 and update CentOS to 7u9.

Some of my systems have megaraid sas2 raid controllers, which Red Hat have
stopped supporting, and all the variant have followed suit.

I have tried the Elrepo DUD's to work around the problem, but my results (in
the 4.4.1/4.4.2 timeframe) were not satisfactory.

[ovirt-users] Re: hosted-engine /var full

2021-05-09 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
Appliance hosted-engine on block storage (fc,iscsi). Have you checked that you
are not wasting space on the disk itself?

When I setup my hosted-engine, I created a 100GB lun, and told the setup
routine to make a 85GB disk, which it did, however the appliance only used 30GB
of that, leaving 55GB unused.

Using basic disk tools, you can add that space to the root file-system.

Use 'fdisk' to create another partition from the unused space, and tag it for
Linux LVM.

Use 'pvcreate' to mark it for LVM.

Use 'vgextend' to add it to the volume group that hold the root file-system.

Use 'lvextend' to extend the root file-system to the gained volume-group space.

And added 4 host (two for each cluster because processor type) and each host

[ovirt-users] Re: Ansible ovirt.ovirt_vm nics

2021-04-26 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
I believe I have identified the issue, variable inheritance.

The inventory I include to define the hosts, includes several classes.
‘virtualmachines’ which the script uses to get the list of VMs it is going to
process. All VM defaults are defined within its ‘:vars’ section.

I also have groups of VMs where I want to override variables. Unfortunately,
what is being defined in ‘virtualmachines’ is not being override in the class
level, because they are considered sibling classes.

I have found the ‘ansible_group_priority’ variable, which can be assigned at
each class. I assigned the entry in [virtualmachines:vars] with the value of 2
(default is 1) and then in the other classes, I assigned a value of 3.

Now the variable in [class:vars] will override the variables in
[virtualmachines:vars]. Of course the host level can still override all.

It’s basically the one listed in the URL. The changes I’ve made is to add
some addition ‘defaults’, and the code I mentioned below, to select different
nic profiles for vms that are on different networks.

I’m running an Oracle Linux 7u9 system, and the version of Ansible is 2.9.18

In my environment, I have created different networks, and labeled them based
upon their vlan tag number (vlan20, vlan21, vlan22, …)

A VM can be created on any of these vlans, so I need to be able to select the
nic profile within ‘ini’ file holding all the configuration information.
(hostname, fqdn, IP address, etc…)

I’ve made several modifications, (more default) and added a few lines, which I
believe is supposed to assign vnic profiles to the primary vnic (nic1), based
upon the definition of ‘vm_nic1_profile’ defined in an included ‘ini’ file.
(the profile defaulting to blank if it is not defined in the ini file.)

It isn’t doing its job.

  nics:

- name: “nic1”

profile_name: "{{ hostvars[item]['vm_nic1_profile'] | default('') }}”

The playbook runs without complaint. If I run it with option ‘-vvv’ part of

Any hints on what I’m doing wrong? I’ve checked the forum, but it tends to

Problem solved.

I used Ansible and ran 'grep Duplicate /var/log/vdsm/vdsm.log' on all 121 of my

entries.

I migrated the hosted-engine, and all other VMs to other hosts, and then put
the affected host into maintenance. I then undeployed it; then patched it; and
finally deployed it.

Its back up and running and taking VMs, and no more 'Duplicate keys' errors.

I think engine.log would be a good place to start, it would likely tell us on
which host there's a problem (if there is one)

What do the logs say?
This usually means that not all hosts were able to disconnect from it

[ovirt-users] Attempting to detach a storage domain

2021-04-25 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
Ovirt: 4.3.10
Storage: iSCSI

Problem: Attempting to place storage domain into 'maintenance' in preparation
for detachment and destruction, has left it hung in a 'Preparation for
maintenance' state.

I have three storage domain I need to put into maintenance, detach and delete.
When I placed place the first, and smallest (100GB) into maintenance mode, it
switched to 'Preparing for Maintenance', and has stuck there for hours.

Early on, I was able to re-activate it, but I do want to remove for use
somewhere else, and I want make sure I can remove it, before I try to do the
same with two 11TB storage domains.

[ovirt-users] Re: Ansible ovirt.ovirt_vm nics

2021-04-22 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com

Hi Matthew,

Could you please share with us your playbook? Which ansible version are you
using? Are you using ovirt_vm module from oVirt Ansible Collection which
contains newer versions than the ovirt_vm module included in Ansible 2.9?

[ovirt-users] Re: How to detach FC Storage Domain

2021-04-09 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
If you destroyed, no.

To migrate the storage, intact, you need to shutdown the VMs, place the storage
domain into maintenance, then detach, and remove the storage domain. And then
do an attach on the new DC.

I've been doing this iSCSI to migrate VMs from an existing DC to a new DC to
alleviate load on the first. (I had to spin up a new DC. I was going to
exceed the limit of hosts on the original one.)

I have an oVirt cluster with a significantly oversized SAN for storage (iSCSI,
have 30TB storage but am only using about 2.5TB). I'm looking for a more
appropriately-sized setup. Any suggestions?

This is currently a Dell EqualLogic array - it doesn't look like they really
even have a smallish VM-storage (at least that isn't VMware) product these
days. Looking at our stats, we're doing more write than read ops (outside of
when backups run), typically under 150 write ops per second.

I'm not looking at replacing servers right now, so not looking at
hyperconverged.

Just interested in what hardware people are using these days for a setup this
size. Thanks.

[ovirt-users] Using VNC console on new cluster

2021-02-11 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
I'm running OLVM 4.3.6 (Consider it oVIrt 4.3.6).

When I created my second cluster, I could not access the hosts on the second
cluster using VNC (haven't tried to get html5 working).

Since I was forced to power off everything, (power outage), I've had no issue
with accessing the console on any host in the second cluster.

I have just created a third cluster. Same problem. No issues with hosts on
the first two clusters, but any host I've migrated to the third cluster, I
cannot access the console.

When I select a host, click on the button for 'Console' I get a download on my
browser, I tell the browser to open the download, and I get, what I think is
the Spice application starting and quitting in a second or two.

I'm not looking forward to telling my management that we need another power
outage.

‘Node’ images are just minimal CentOS plus all the packages for this release,
in a sub-DVD sized ISO. Once it is installed, the operating system is still
CentOS, and can be patched/modified, including installing alternative kernels.

If it fails, boot back to the original kernel, and remove the package from

[ovirt-users] Using Ansible ovirt_vm

2021-01-14 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
Over this weekend, I need to shutdown and restart 1500 VMs while I do work.
Modifying an Ansible playbook I have, to accomplish that, seems easy enough.

Last weekend I used the web gui and edited each Virtual Machine and changed the
'cluster' to the one I wanted to assign it too. Now I would like to automate
this with Ansible.

In between shutting them down and starting them up, I need to change the
cluster registration of quite a few of the hosts, and I have concerns on how to
do that.

The Ansible ovirt_vm documentation on this is a bit fuzzy. I'm assuming it for
assigning the cluster, but in some examples it appears to be used as a filter.
Which changes the meaning. Is it "start the VM in this cluster" or "start this
VM if it is in this cluster".

The playbook I'm working from is straight forward and has three tasks.

First, an ovirt_auth task to log into the SHE.

Second, an ovirt_vm task which loops though the group of virtualmachines,
defined in an 'ini' file.

Third, an ovirt_auth task to logout from the SHE.

For stopping, I assume I specify a name, and state to 'stopped' and that should
initiate the shutdown.

For starting, I assume I should set the state to 'running'.

For changing the cluster a vm is assigned to, do I simply need to use the
'cluster' parameter with a value of new cluster? Are there other actions that
need to be taken? The VM need to be un and re-registered for the change to
take effect? I'd like to make the cluster change individual playbook, but
could it be added to the start or stop playbook. (ie: stop and change cluster,
start on new cluster)

Waiting for the wisdom of the community.

[ovirt-users] Re: VM console does not work with new cluster.

2021-01-12 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
Stop/Edit/Start is the only mechanism available. You cannot change the
cluster value for a VM, until it is stopped.

The VMs have static addresses. The VM is fully function on the new cluster.

It’s just that once the VM has been moved to the new cluster, selecting console
results in the same behavior, but that virt-viewer starts and stops within a
second.

Did you shut down the vm's and start them up on the new cluster? It sounds like

[ovirt-users] Breaking up a oVirt cluster on storage domain boundary.

2020-12-30 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
Is it possible to break up an oVirt cluster into multiple clusters?

I have an Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager 4.3.6 cluster (think oVirt 4.3.6)
that is hosting four different classes of VM's.

I have acquired some additional hosts, and instead of adding them to my
"default" cluster, I want to create three new clusters, and migrate each class
of VM to its own cluster.

Each class has its own network, and storage domains.

Can I migrate storage domains, and thus all the VMs within that storage domain?

Or will I need to build new cluster, with new storage domains, and migrate the
VMs?

Most of my VMs are built from templates. I assume that those cloned from
templates will not be an issue. But some of my classes are thin provisioned,
and I suspect I will have an issue with migrating those at the VM level, which
is why I want to migrate them at the storage domain level.

Nothing much really. It is two ways to get to the same result.

Use a CentOS minimal OS install, plus the oVirt packages from the repository.

Or an oVirt Node ISO with all of the necessary package included. Patchable and
upgradable from the respective repositories.

But what difference between the Enterprise Linux Hosts and oVirt Nodes ? Please

Hi Matteo,

this one is the solution we’ve applied on OLVM that should also work for oVirt:

Before Deploying Self Hosted Engine(SHE) update the below lines in
/usr/share/ansible/roles/ovirt.hosted-engine-setup/hooks/enginevm_before_engine_setup/install_pre_setup_packages.yml

From
- name:Install oVirt Engine packages for restoring backup
package:
name: "ovirt-engine"
state: present
when: ovirt_engine_setup_product_type | lower == 'ovirt'
 To
-name: Install oVirt Engine packages for restoring backup
package:
 name: "ovirt-engine"
 state: present
environment:
 https_proxy:
 http_proxy:
when: ovirt_engine_setup_product_type | lower == 'ovirt'

In place of add your own proxy; example: http://myproxy:3128

Hope this helps.

yes it was me here:

But in my case it was simpler because the engine was external.
With hosted engine it is indeed a problem that should be addressed I think

[ovirt-users] Need assistance in migrating between iSCSI arrays.

2020-10-21 Thread matthew.st...@fujitsu.com
To get a project going, I used an iSCSI SAN array of limited storage, while
waiting to obtain, and make operational another iSCSI SAN of considerably more
storage.

I've attached the new iSCSI array to my cluster of hosts, attached a number of
LUNs as additional storage domains, and move my collection of ISO and disk
images to the new storage. I also detached and removed the old iSCSI storage
domains I no longer need. I'm now down to the last two Storage Domains. The
hosted_engine, and the last DATA domain, holding templates.

Now the hard part reared its head.

I need to completely detach the old iSCSI SAN array, which means I need to
migrate the hosted-engine, and my small collection of templates, which I
created on the old iSCSI array, to storage domains on the new iSCSI array.

I'm looking for recommendations on how to do both.

As to the details, I am running Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager 4.3.6, in
hosted-engine mode, which means I am running oVirt 4.3.6, in hosted-engine mode.

Note: I have configured the first three hosts in the cluster to support
hosted-engine, so the hosted-engine can be moved around, for system maintenance.

I have for many years used gluster because..well. 3 nodes.. and so long as I
can pull a drive out.. I can get my data.. and with three copies.. I have much
higher chance of getting it.

Downsides to gluster: Slower (its my home..meh... and I have SSD to avoid MTBF
issues ) and with VDO.. and thin provisioning.. not had issue.

BUT gluster seems to be falling out of favor. Especially as I move
towards OCP.

So.. CEPH. I have one SSD in each of the three servers. so I have some space
to play.

I googled around.. and find no clean deployment notes and guides on CEPH +
oVirt.

Comments or ideas..

Subject: [ovirt-users] Recreating ISO storage domain

I have created a three host oVirt cluster using 4.4.2.

I created an ISO storage domain to hold my collection of ISO images, and then
decided to migrate it to a better location.

I placed the storage domain in maintenance mode, end then removed it.

When I when to recreate it add the new location, I found that the 'ISO' storage
domain was no longer an options.

What do I need to do to re-enable it, so I can re-create the storage domain.
