[ovirt-users] Ovirt Hyperconverged

I'm not dsure why this error occurs. I tried the same file from a different
server and even tried a different server.

Something is wrong with this file structure.

Anyhelp is appreviated.

[ovirt-users] Ovirt 4.3 console.vv

2023-11-12 Thread eevans--- via Users
I have CentOS Stream 9 on my laptop with KDE Plasma Workspaces.
I installedd virt-viewer and tried through gui, console and it tells me the
virtual machine can't be found.
It works fine with the Windows viewer. It seems to be a Centos issue. Something
is not reading or interuppreting the file properly.
I'd like to get this resolved.
I hope someone has an answer.
Thanks in advance.

[ovirt-users] adding foreman as an external provider

2022-09-30 Thread eevans--- via Users
I had an ovirt engine failure which corrupted my foreman/katello vm. My
ovirt-engine is 4.3 and I was using foreman 3.0 with Katello 4.5.
Once the ovirt-engine was repaired, still 4.3, I updated the foreman katello
install to foreman 3.3 and Katello 4.5. I can connect from foreman to Ovirt as
a compute resource but cannot add foreman to ovirt as an external provider.

[ovirt-users] gluster and virtualization

2022-02-02 Thread eevans
My setup is 3 ovirt nodes that run gluster independently of the engine server,
even thought the engine still controls it. So 4 nodes, one engine and 3
clustered nodes.
This has been and running with no issues except this:
But now my arbiter node will not load the gluster drive when virtualization is
enable in the BIOS. I've been scratching my head on this and need some
direction.
I am attaching the error.

Keep in mind, this error does not occur is VT is turned off..it boots normally.

[ovirt-users] glusterfs not starting

2021-08-20 Thread eevans
I have an ovirt 4.3 on 3 Centos 7 with Gluster 9. Another Centos 7 server is
the Ovirt node, but only for management and file sharing.
Everything was fine until a power outage. Now node2 glusterfs will not spawn
the listening port for the brick..
All nodes are connected, but just no brick port for the brick on this node due
to glusterfsd not starting .

I pointed to the volume file: glusterfs
--volfile=dds_cluster.kvm02.digitaldatatechs.com.gluster_bricks-kvm02_bricks-brick1-brick1.vol

and even the entire path:
 glusterfs
--volfile=/var/lib/glusterd/vols/dds_cluster/dds_cluster.kvm02.digitaldatatechs.com.gluster_bricks-kvm02_bricks-brick1-brick1.vol

I really need some help with this and it will be greatly appreciated.

[ovirt-users] Glusterfs and vm's

2021-05-07 Thread eevans
I have researched and applied several tweaks to Gluster to improve performance
but on the vm side, depending on distribution, you can "tweak" the vm for
better performance on Gluster as well;

yum install tuned.noarch tuned-utils-systemtap.noarch tuned-utils.noarch
tuned-gtk.noarch -y
(GTK is for a gui if you have one.)

tuned-adm profile virtual-guest

Also, you can increase or decrease cache or swappiness on the host to fit your
vm's, for workstations or servers. My cache is set to 2048 MB cache and
swappiness of 10.
Thanks for the help you have given me.
Eric

This helps RHEL and CentOS machines utilize glusterfs and actually speeds teh
vm up.
I hope this will help someone. If you want the URL for the article, just ask.
Also, you can increase or decrease cache or swappiness to fit your vm's, for

I'm extracting the ova into vm and disk. The disk does not have a file

If this works, I'll let you know.
However, the fact that it thin provisions the drive even though I chose

Something about v2v isn't importing correctly or not able to seperate the disk

[ovirt-users] Re: VM console does not work with new cluster.

2021-01-12 Thread eevans
Are you using IP or dns? Has the IP changed? Host IP? Vm id? It sounds like
virt viewer cannot find it's target. Connecting with spice or vnc? What do your
logs say about the connection? Look at event viewer after a try and see what's
in the application log.

Stop/Edit/Start is the only mechanism available. You cannot change the
cluster value for a VM, until it is stopped.

The VMs have static addresses. The VM is fully function on the new cluster.

It’s just that once the VM has been moved to the new cluster, selecting console
results in the same behavior, but that virt-viewer starts and stops within a
second.

Did you shut down the vm's and start them up on the new cluster? It sounds like
they are associated with the default still and that's where virt viewer is
looking for them..

Sounds like it, but VMs are running on the same network, with the same IP
address. The only firewall involved are on the hosts, and they are both
firewalld, and have the same ports and service permitted.

I've added several new hosts to my data center, and instead of adding them to
my 'default' cluster, I created a new cluster ('two').

I can access the VM console (virt-viewer) when the VM is on the 'default'

disappears in sub-second fashion. Moving the VM back to 'default', restores
access.

I'm running virt-viewer 9.0-256 on my Windows 10 Pro laptop. (for months)

I'm running Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager on Oracle Linux 7u9 hosts.

The new ('two') cluster hosts are connected to the same networks as the
original systems ('default'). (They have the same assigned IP address.)

Firewalld is reporting the same ports and services enabled on 'default' and
'two' hosts. The VM's are not running firewalls.

Apparently I'm missing something.

[ovirt-users] Re: VM console does not work with new cluster.

2021-01-12 Thread eevans
Did you shut down the vm's and start them up on the new cluster? It sounds like
they are associated with the default still and that's where virt viewer is
looking for them..

Sounds like it, but VMs are running on the same network, with the same IP
address. The only firewall involved are on the hosts, and they are both
firewalld, and have the same ports and service permitted.

I've added several new hosts to my data center, and instead of adding them to
my 'default' cluster, I created a new cluster ('two').

I can access the VM console (virt-viewer) when the VM is on the 'default'
cluster, but once moved to the the new cluster, virt-viewer pops up and
disappears in sub-second fashion.

[ovirt-users] Re: RDP

2020-07-23 Thread eevans
We are talking about the VM portal and SSO and RDP, and it is still not working
for users. admin@internal can get an RDP login screen and I can use domain
credentials and login. Users, however, never get the RDP window, even though
spice comes right up. I even created a test user and made them a SuperUser and
still no RDP through the portal.
When logged into the vm portal as a normal user I can see the vm's, whick I
would like the user assigned to that specific vm to only see that machine and
not all of them. Either way, I click on the console options button and chose
RDP and nothing happens. if I chose spice, it comes right up.
There is something some where missing in permissions.
Also, 99% of the time, if I try to add a user from AD, the ui logged in as
admin@internal can't find it. i can reboot the Engine host and they are in the
Users list. not always, but usually. Almost like the ldap portion is shutting
down or timing out.
Whatever you need, let me know. I've look at logs and there are errors related
but googling them hasn't helped.
Just some background: The engine host is separate from the other hosts, it is
logged into the domain using samba winbind following Red Hat's instructions, as
are all my hosts and vm's. sssd and kerberos are working without a problem.
I can do anything on the domain I want to do with the engine host, except use
RDP SSO to login to a vm. I am very frustrated at this point and need some
guidance.
Any help would be appreciated.

[ovirt-users] RDP

2020-07-12 Thread eevans
I am using Ovirt 4.3. I followed the instructions for get RDP to work for a
user, but admin@internal is the only user the RDP will launch for. The other
test users I created and are added to the Remote Desktop Users group which is
the permission I assigned to the VM's as well as the user name. I added users
first, then the group to see if it would help.
So far, admin@internal, the Ovirt admin user, is the only user RDP will work
for.
I know I am missing something, I'm just not sure what.
Any help would be appreciated.

[ovirt-users] vdsm error every hour

SetVolumeDescriptionVDS failed: Volume does not exist:

I looked in storage and disks and this disk does not exist. Its more of an
annoyance than a problem but if there is way to get rid of this error I would
like to know.
My research says I can install vdsm-tools and vdsm-cli but vdsm-cli is not
available and I really don;t want to install anything until I know it's what I

Is there a vdsm command to purge a missing disk so this error won't show up?

[ovirt-users] migration

2020-06-06 Thread eevans
I am running Ovirt 4.310. When I update the engine server it updates the user
extensions to
ovirt-engine-ui-extensions.noarch 0:1.0.13-1.20200303git3b594b8.el7 and
migration fails. I have to downgrade to
ovirt-engine-ui-extensions-1.0.10-1.el7.noarch.rpm inorder to get migration to
work again.
This needs to be passed on to the developers to correct the updated version.
Also, I had to download ovirt-engine-ui-extensions-1.0.10-1.el7.noarch.rpm and
run yum downgrade ovirt-engine-ui-extensions-1.0.10-1.el7.noarch.rpm for the
downgrade to complete successfully.
After the downgrade, migration works.

Subject: [ovirt-users] Safely disable firewalld [Ovirt 4.3]

Hi all,

I was wondering if it's "safe" disabling entirely the firewalld service and
manage the firewall only via iptables, on the host and on the hosted engine (a
self-hosted engine). It would make a lot easier the managing the firewall rules
for me because of many automatisms I created based on iptables. Did anyone
manage to do this? Any contraindication for doing this or precaution that I
have to take care of?

Thanks for your time and help,

When you look at the permissions tab for a VM you will see all the
permissions and roles for users & groups, if it is an inherited permission
it will show what object it is applied to e,g, database/cluster. You need to
remove any that aren't appropriate.

Caution External Mail: Do not click any links or open any attachments unless
you trust the sender and know that the content is safe.

I guess I need to clarify; when a user logs in to the vm portal, I only want
them to see the machine assigned to them and have the ability to operate it.

How do I set the permission on a per user per vm basis to ensure the user
has the same vm every time they login and that's all they see is their vm.

That's what I'm trying to accomplish.

Good example: In vmware, you can assign a specific user to a specific
machine so that is there machine and that's all they see.

Hello Eric,

It sounds like you have permissions set to a group at some
level, these are hierarchical  system->datacenter->cluster->VM

if you remove this permission and then set the userrole for the VM they
should only be allowed to run this VM.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something or not, but I haven't seen how to
assign a specific user to a specific vm. Is there a way to do that? When

2020-04-17 Thread eevans
I guess I need to clarify; when a user logs in to the vm portal, I only want
them to see the machine assigned to them and have the ability to operate it.

How do I set the permission on a per user per vm basis to ensure the user
has the same vm every time they login and that's all they see is their vm.

That's what I'm trying to accomplish.

Good example: In vmware, you can assign a specific user to a specific
machine so that is there machine and that's all they see.

Under the vm advanced options, under host. You chose a specific host then allow
passthrough or pinning.

Thanks. The Installation->Reinstall was something I missed but that doesn't
seem to have helped. The host info still says that 'Device Passthrough' is
Disabled. I'm sure I enabled everything I needed to in the BIOS but will have
to double check. This is an old motherboard without IPMI though. Meh.

In order to change a kernel parameter - set the host into maintenance -> edit
the host -> kernel -> put ticks where necessary or type your kernel parameter
and save.
Next use the 'Installation' dropdown and select reinstall.
Once it's over - reboot the host from UI.

At least this is the way I have enabled nested virtualization.

I have Windows 10 and haven't experienced that. You can't shut it down in the

Hi,

We have a few Windows 10 VM's running on our ovirt 4.3, where when you shutdown
the VM from within Windows, that VM does not shut down but gets a status of
unknown in ovirt and one cannot do anything to the machines within the web gui.
This seems to specfically be related to that Windows 10 template that we have
created. Any ideas? Also, any ideas on how one can shut these machines down?

Thanks

Hi,

I'm trying to set up one of our nodes with PCI passthrough but there is a dead

I'm trying to set up one of our nodes with PCI passthrough but there is a dead
lnk in the documentation for the kernel boot parameter section of creating a
new host.

https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/admin-guide/sect-Explanation_of_Settings_and_Controls_in_the_New_Host_and_Edit_Host_Windows

Anyone know where this went or can help me with the options?

Shareef.

If you ls -l /etc/yum.repos.d you should have ovirt-4.3.repo and
ovirt-4.3-dependencies.repo. Usually the dependencies are missing with this
error.

Subject: [ovirt-users] Re: Can't migrate over migration network

This helped. I originally got the migration network to work by removing the
vlan tags from the ovirt network and switch ports and just using a different
subnet for the migration network. Worked fine. However I wanted to get the
vlans working.

Your suggestion got me thinking about my Aruba switch and how its different
from a Cisco. I had my switchports in access mode which was passing all
traffic as untagged when the traffic coming from ovirt was tagged.

I put the vlan tags back on the ovirt network and then changed my switchports
to trunk and removed the native vlan and now the traffic is tagged all the way
through and the migration network is now working with the vlan.

Appreciate the help.

Subject: [ovirt-users] upgrade VM cluster compatibility version

I'm trying to upgrade my cluster to 4.3. Currently its running 4.2.8.2-1.el7.

But the cluster compatibility version is 3.6.

I try to change that and it says I need to edit the VM.

https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/upgrade-guide/chap-Post-Upgrade_Tasks.html

says:

Important: An error message may warn that some virtual machines and templates
are incorrectly configured. To fix this error, edit each virtual machine
manually. The Edit Virtual Machine window provides additional validations and
warnings that show what to correct. Sometimes the issue is automatically
corrected and the virtual machine’s configuration just needs to be saved again.
After editing each virtual machine, you will be able to change the cluster
compatibility version.

I edit the VM and there are no errors or warnings. I see no way to change the
cluster compatibility level on a VM.

How do I change the Custom Compatibility Version??

You can access the API with a local user account by using saslpasswd
then use those credentials for the cron job. You can point to a
user account in crontab by putting the username before the script path. I'm
just not sure how to have the password automatically called for authentication.

I'm working on a cron job to run on the engine to do some tasks via the API.
Is there a way I can get an API OAuth token created without actually storing a
password?

For example, some script that can be run to directly create a session in the
database and return the token. Obviously this _can_ be done, it's a matter of
knowing the right bits to do (so basically wondering if that has already been
written).

I only have internal users, so no external authentication store available.

A separate migration network wouldn’t help you. I’m trying to figure out why it
would be stuck migrating one vm for 20 hours. Something has to be preventing it.

What is your setup? Have you looked at the engine.log or the vm log in
/var/log/libvirt/qemu/.log?

Hi Eric, thanks for the reply.

Actually putting the host to activate did stopped the maintenance and aborted
the migration. Thank you for that.

Regarding the segregated motion network, I don’t have additional physical
interfaces, I can only do it on a VLAN. I don’t know if this would help…

The attached picture shows my networks.

Hello,

There’s a huge VM on it, with 32 gigs of RAM and this VM is failing migration.

So, there’s a way to cancel prepare for maintenance, so the host can stop

I can just shutdown the VM to do the maintenance on the host...

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Ovirt an HA cluster? I assume pacemaker

if I'm not mistaken, these two have different purposes: gluster(fs) is a

[ovirt-users] One more time

2020-04-13 Thread eevans
I have thought about the issue with Windows vm's reporting the timezone
incorrectly. I reaqlized that just last month, before I created my vm's that
the Daylight Savings Time took affect moving our time up 1 hour. SO, based on
that, instead of setting my time zone to US Eastern (GMT -5), I set it to SA
Western (GMT -4) and the nasty exclamation mark disappeared.
This tells me that DST (Daylight Savings Time) is not an option or configurable
in Ovirt. I think this should be an easy fix for those of use that are stuck
with it.
I don't think the rest of the world participates in DST but most of the United
States does. It would be nice to have those zones added as a configurable
option that would switch on the dates it is nationally indicated to change.

I hope the developers read this.
Thanks.

This is addressed with a new ioprocess-1.4.1 package for the bug[1].

Thanks,

Thanks for the message. Looking through the logs I saw references to the
blocksize but since that is contained in the ansible scripts which get
downloaded to the host I gave up finding the source versions to try to see it I
could get it going beyond that failing step.

Anyway, thanks for informing me,

[ovirt-users] Re: Can't migrate over migration network

2020-04-12 Thread eevans
I set a migration network today. At first I could not ping the other machines,
but then I realized the vlan was a tagged vlan in ovirt. I changed the switch
ports to general and tagged them and it worked. I don't know your network or
config, but thought I would pass this along. If you have a vlan configured in
ovirt, the ports attaching to that network card have to be tagged, not
un-tagged.
Not sure if this will help but wanted to pass it along.

The general idea was, that with oVirt I'd get a little more automation and
benefits than with just using VirtualBox as a GUI for KVMs.

Boy did I underestimate the amount of intellectual investment for the first
value return. Turned out quite a bit bigger than vSphere, but much more
intriguing, because after all: The code was all there! I got hooked... beyond
reasonble, perhaps.

With Openstack they jury has come back a long time ago: Unless you're willing
to sacrifice a double digit team for a year or three, don't go near it.

Three node HCI oVirt just looked like a tight little project with plenty of
expandability... sigh!

[ovirt-users] Re: Can't migrate over migration network

2020-04-10 Thread eevans
I migrate over the vm network.

You need to ask someone more familiar with Ovirt about the migration vs. the vm
network. I have had issue getting different subnets for the vm’s to function
properly. My understanding is that if the engine host knows and can use the
network, you should be able to use it. However, the migration network has to be
setup on the hosts and attached to a nic in order to use it. In the host
properties and setup networks, is the migration network attached to a nic with
the proper subnets or vlans?

I’m not sure if that’s helpful or not. I just don’t know enough about Ovirt to
give a definitive answer.

Thanx for the note. Still not working. I made the change on the hosts and
manager and then added the custom ip addresses to the ovirtmgmt network. The
attached screenshot shows the custom IP address added to ovirtmgmt.

Same issue.

2020-04-10 21:05:13.882+: 5801: error : virNetSocketNewConnectTCP:591 :
unable to connect to server at '192.168.25.5:49152
': No route to host.

I can ping the 192.168.25.x address on the host - but I can't ping the .25.x
address on the other host.

I also can't ping either 192.168.25.x address from the manager.

One question I had is does the migration network need to be a VM Network? I've
tried it several ways - but just wanted to know the right configuration.

Thanx!!!

[ovirt-users] Re: Windows 10 Pro 64 (1909) crashes when migrating

2020-04-10 Thread eevans
I found this thread on Stack overflow:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/9077457/how-to-trace-tcmalloc-large-alloc

See

http://code.google.com/p/gperftools/source/browse/trunk/src/tcmalloc.cc?r=80&redir=1
 line 843

Depending on your application - the large allocation may or may not be a bug.

In any case - the part after the @ mark is a stack trace and can be used to
locate the source of the message

The repeating number (4294488064 which seems to be equal to 4G-479232 or
0x1-0x75000) makes me suspect the original allocation call got a
negative signed value and used it as an unsigned value.

It also had this to trace the memory leak:

to trace the mem address to a line in your code, use addr2line commandline
tool.. use it as addr2line -e then press enter and then paste
an address and press enter

I’m not sure if this is helpful but it does sound like a memory leak.

In a related Microsoft doc it stated:

1073741824 Allocations larger than this value cause a stack trace to be
dumped to stderr. The threshold for dumping stack traces is increased by a
factor of 1.125 every time we print a message so that the threshold
automatically goes up by a factor of ~1000 every 60 messages. This bounds the
amount of extra logging generated by this flag. Default value of this flag is
very large and therefore you should see no extra logging unless the flag is
overridden.

The default in Windows is 1 GB. I’m not sure about Linux.

I hope this is helpful.

[ovirt-users] multiple subnets on hosts for vm's

2020-04-10 Thread eevans
This is not critical but some functionality I think should be in Ovirt and
maybe I am going about it the wrong way.
I have several subnets on my physical network. My engine host is separate from
the clustered hosts that house the vm's. In order for the vm's on the other
subnets (vlans) to get Internet access, I have to add the extra ip addrs on the
ovirtmgmt network interface.
I have read and tried every solution I could find trying to add teh subnets
without using the extra ip addrs option but the machine either becomes isolated
or will not start at all.
Can someone tell me how to add the vlans so the engine host sees and utilizes
them?
The engine host can get to resources on the vlans because of the router config
but will not let any subnet except ovirtmgmt outside the cluster.
This is not critical but something I would like to get working for future
deployments.
Thank you for your help.

Follow this article to add the extra addrs. On the ovirtmgmt interface on the
hosts, go to custom and add the IP's you need. See the attached screenshot.
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_virtualization/4.2/html/administration_guide/sect-Hosts_and_Networking#Editing-VLAN-Settings
That should take care of the problem for you.

I've now shut down the VMs on one host and rebooted it but the agent service
doesn't start. If I run 'hosted-engine --vm-status' I get:

The hosted engine configuration has not been retrieved from shared storage.
Please ensure that ovirt-ha-agent is running and the storage server is
reachable.

and indeed if I list the mounts under /rhev/data-center/mnt, only one of the
directories is mounted. I have 3 NFS mounts, one ISO Domain and two Data
Domains. Only one Data Domain has mounted and this has lots of .prob files in.
So why haven't the other NFS exports been mounted?

Manually mounting them doesn't seem to have helped much either. I can start
the broker service but the agent service says no. Same error as the one in my
last email.

I've restarted the broker and agent services and I still get nothing in
virsh->list.

If you haven’t got this resolved, log into the host and use ‘saslpasswd’ without the quotes.

Then virsh start and use the password you set on the local account.

I’m not sure it will work, but has worked for regular vm’s.

So my engine has gone down and I can't ssh into it either. If I try to log

can't reach the engine.

What are my next steps?

First steps, on one of your hosts as root:

To get information:

hosted-engine --vm-status

To start the engine:

hosted-engine --vm-start

I am trying to upload an image.qcow2 from a previous kvm installation to a
block iscsi storage domain if possible, if I have to first stand up and NFS
storage domain I could do that as well and move the disk once its uploaded, I
just cannot get it uploaded.

I know there is a method for importing from a KVM provider via the following
link
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_virtualization/4.1/html/administration_guide/sect-adding_external_providers#Adding_KVM_as_an_External_Provider
However all I have is the disk image, the KVM environment it was running in is
no longer operational. So I am looking for a simple command line method to
upload the image, similar to how one could use the ovirt-iso-uploader to upload
an image to an iso domain.

My understanding is the export (data) domains will hold the iso’s and vfd files
now. Personally, I like having an ISO domain to keep those files separated from
vm hard disks and configs.

I guess I’m a bit old school.

Hi all

I'm trying to understand how ISO and Export domains going away is going to
affect us.

We have four RHV instances:

- Prod DC1 (RHV4.1)

- Prod DC2 (RHV4.1)

- DEV (RHV4.3)

- TEST (RHV4.3)

Prod DC1, DEV and TEST all share export and ISO domains.

Prod DC2 is remote and currently has its own ISO and Export domains.

When ISO and Export domains go away, can I still share ISO domains between the
RHV instances?

Thanks

Hi All,

I'm currently facing a situation which I don't know how to resolve and I
don't know how that happened. The hosted engine HA part is working fine and
the vm starts. It's accessible via the gui and that's it. It's showing some
hosts online and some offline. It looks like it's not communication with the
nodes anymore to get the latest status or to start task. Is there a cache or
something that can be cleared on the engine vm to force a connection the the
nodes ? Or is there a way to analyze if communication is really broken ?

Any ideas how to start from here ?

Thank you,

NTP is a protocol and CET (Central European Time) is a timezone. Windows and
Linux are both using the network time protocol (NTP). Your statement makes no
sense to me. What you probably mean is, that Linux normally uses its hardware
clock in UTC.

Hi,

we are currently preparing our Windows software packages for update oVirt from
version 4.3 to version 4.4. One of the novelties[1] of version 4.4 is the
change from the ovirt-guest-tools to the virtio-win guest tools.

We are currently running version 4.3.9.4-1.el7 in our oVirt cluster.
When we are installing the new virtio-win guest tools we get the tooltip
message: "Actual timezone in the guest differs from the configuration".
The guest agents of the two guest tools are completely different, the
ovirt-guest-agent is written in Python, the qemu-guest-agent is written in C.
So my guess was, that there would different result send to the ovirt-engine. As
I looked into the sources of ovirt-engine, especially into the timezone Java
stuff, I did not found any changes in the last few months.

So is this bug fixed, with the new ovirt version 4.4, or is this aspect new?

P.S. The os in the vm was Windows 10 version 1909

Do you have more specific details or guidelines in regards to the graphics you

Artwork should be shared under a license oVirt project can use, I would
recommend CC-BY-SA.

The oVirt brand is now blue/white, like

[ovirt-users] manual migration

2020-04-03 Thread eevans
FYI: My issue with the inability to migrate is solved. The issue was the
ovirt-engine-ui-extensions-1.0.10-1.el7.noarch updated to 1.0.13 and it killed
the ability to migrate.

In order to downgrade I had to download the rpm,
ovirt-engine-ui-extensions-1.0.10-1.el7.noarch.rpm and run a yum downgrade
command “yum downgrade ovirt-engine-ui-extensions-1.0.10-1.el7.noarch.rpm”. It
would not downgrade any other way.

Once it downgraded, migration ability was back.

Thanks all for the help and support.

Subject: [ovirt-users] oVirt ansible backup improvements

If anyone has been following along, I had previously shared a blog post and
GitHub repo regarding my unofficial solution for backing up oVirt VMs using
Ansible.

Martin Necas reached out to me and we collaborated on some great improvements.
Namely, it is now possible to run the playbook from any host without requiring
direct access to storage (which I was previously using for export status
verification). There were several other improvements and cleanups made as well.

The changes have been merged in and the READMME updated, you can find the
project here: https://github.com/silverorange/ovirt_ansible_backup

Big thanks to Martin for helping out. Very much appreciated!

My experience is using the vfd file to load the drivers. You can install tools
after the completed install. Just the virtio scsi drivers are needed for the
initial install.

Server CD and virtio-win-server.vfd I think is the name of it.

I've never had any of these issues... These are my usual windows steps.

1. boot fresh vm into windows ISO image installer.

2. when i get to disk screen (blank because i use VirtIO-SCSI), change windows
ISO to ovirt guest tools ISO

3. click load drivers, browse, load VirtIO-SCSI driver from CD, go back to disk
screen.

4. swap ovirt guest tools ISO for Windows ISO, click refresh, then install on
HDD.

5. when windows boots, swap ISO's again and run the ovirt guest tools
installer. Sometimes my mouse breaks at this point, but i can click restart in
the admin portal and after that all is well.

I just noticed something funny in the Windows installer. When you get to the
point where it can't find any installation media, if you Load Driver, a popup
appears with a Browse and OK/Cancel options. I assumed that I should be
browsing to the floppy here but if you do that, you get an error that no signed
drivers can be found. Instead, you just have to hit OK when the popup appears
and that somehow finds the drivers.

I'm assuming that I will need to install the network driver once the
installation has finished?

It does work that way.

I found that out as I was testing oVirt and had not created a separate ISO
Domain. I believe it was Strahil who pointed me in the right direction.

So if one does not have an ISO Domain, it is no longer required. Along with
the fact that ISO Domains are or in the process of being deprecated.

[ovirt-users] Re: NFS permissions error on ISODomain file with correct permissions

It depends on the NAS. What NAS do you have? How is NFS setup and what version?
It could be several different things but without knowing the specific setup,
I’d be guessing.

OK, think this is solved and it was a permissions issue. I eventually logged
into the NAS to see if I could see anything different in the exports and the
ISO Domain didn't have any group ownership rights.

This is strange because when you browse the directory from an oVirt node, it
shows each directory and file as having full permissions. Is this an NFS thing?

Is that not what you're asking?

I have both the ISODomain and two DataDomain's mounted. I have a bunch of VM's
running off this NAS with no issues. The permissions to the VFD files are all
correct and I can create and list files in the ISODomain with no issue.

It looks like the ISO domain is on a NAS, so I would try a mount of the actual
folder on the ovirt node to make sure you are able to access it. Also, can you
place it in an export domain instead and try?

I think version 4.2+ it just needs to be in an export domain.

Also make sure the NAS path is correct. Most NAS use a data or shares for nfs
mounts. (nasname:/shares/

Hi,

I asked this question in another thread but it seems to have been lost in the
noise so I'm reposting with a more descriptive subject.

I'm trying to start a Windows VM and use the virtio-win VFD floppy to get the
drivers but the VM startup fails due to a permissions issue detailed below.
The permissions look fine to me so why can't the VFD be read?

Shareef.

I found a permissions issue in the engine.log:

We are on an older version (3.x - cannot be specific as I cannot get my ovirt
hosted engine up).

We experienced a storage failure earlier this evening - the hosted engine was
originally installed with this storage domain although we have moved all VM's
and disks off of it.

The storage was restored and all the VM's are now running, but the ovirt engine
is not pinging and is unreachable.

I have attempted to locate it on my HV's using 'virsh list --all' but only one
of those is taking my credentials - all the others fail to authenticate.

Is there a way to locate what the credentials are on each HV since the default
is not working? Additionally, is there any other way to locate the hosted
engine and restart it directly from a HV?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

So, how would I go about disabling global maintenance when hosted engine isn't
running?

I tried editing /var/lib/ovirt-hosted-engine-ha/ha.conf and setting both values
to False but that didn't help.

local_maintenance=False
local_maintenance_manual=False

I shut down all of the VM's and detached the storage before cleaning up and
trying to re-deploy the hosted engine, first time I've run into this particular
problem.

Any help appreciated

[ovirt-users] Re: NFS permissions error on ISODomain file with correct permissions

2020-03-31 Thread eevans
If you issue the mount command does the path show.

mount |grep

It looks like the ISO domain is on a NAS, so I would try a mount of the actual
folder on the ovirt node to make sure you are able to access it. Also, can you
place it in an export domain instead and try?

I think version 4.2+ it just needs to be in an export domain.

Also make sure the NAS path is correct. Most NAS use a data or shares for nfs
mounts. (nasname:/shares/

permissions

But when I look at that path on the node in question, every folder and the
final file have the correct vdsm:kvm permissions:

The files were uploaded to the ISO domain using:

So just to confirm all the options when I'm setting up the VM. This is Windows
Server 2019 so I'm selecting:

 - General:Operating System = Windows 2019 x64

 - System:Memory Size = 16GB

 - System:Total Virtual CPUs = 8

 - BootOptions:First Device = CD-ROM

 - BootOptions:Second Device = Hard Disk

Then in the Run Once config I'm attaching both the floppy and CD as well as
updating the predefined boot sequence.

When I installed the virtio-win package there are multiple VFD files in
/usr/share/virtio-win/. I'm assuming the win_amd64.vfd version is for
non-server Windows installs so I picked virtio-win_servers_amd64.vfd.

Assuming that's all ok, it just seems to be a strange permissions issue...

Hi,

I'm trying to create a Windows Server 2019 VM and having found the virtio-win
package that needed to be installed am facing the next hurdle.

I've followed the documentation and I'm using the Run Once option with the
following boot options:

Attach Floppy: virtio-win_servers_amd64.vfd

Attach CD: Win 2029 ISO

CD-ROM at top of Predefined Boot Sequence

Clicking OK starts the VM but it immediately fails with a Failed Launching pop
up.

How do I go about debugging this?

Shareef.

Yes Eric, indeed.

And as you see from my post, the storage network has been specified during
setup.

And indeed it is the one (even if only with one host) used by Gluster.

But apparently oVirt didn't setup e storage network for it as I expected

So the 3 questions are:

1) is this behavior expected?

2) if so, do you think a useful thing to integrate storage network
configuration during the setup phase if specified by the user?

3) what is the expected flow to do now to configure the storage network? is
downtime expected to do so?

Thanks

This is older documentation but I believe it still applies.

https://www.ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/gluster/select-network-for-gluster.html

I would check with the Red Hat folks to make sure but my understanding is
glusterfs has it’s own network. I would assume it would have to be defined
beforehand for it work properly.

I hope this helps.

Subject: [ovirt-users] Doubts related to single HCI and storage network

Hello,

I deployed HCI 4.3.9 with gluster and single node from the cockpit based
interface.

During install I specified the storage network, using

1) For the mgmt network and hostname of the hypervisor

172.16.0.30 ovirt.mydomain

2) for the storage network (even if not used in single host... but in case of
future addition..)

10.50.50.11 ovirtst.mydomain.storage

all went good. And system runs quite ok: I was able to deploy an OCP 4.3.8
cluster with 3 workers and 3 masters... a part from erratic "vm paused"
messages for which I'm going to send a dedicated mail...

I see in engine.log warning messages of this kind:

2020-03-27 00:32:08,655+01 WARN
[org.ovirt.engine.core.vdsbroker.gluster.GlusterVolumesListReturn]
(DefaultQuartzScheduler2) [15cbd52e] Could not associate brick
'ovirtst.mydomain.storage:/gluster_bricks/engine/engine' of volume
'40ad3b5b-4cc1-495a-815b-3c7e3436b15b' with correct network as no gluster
network found in cluster '9cecfa02-6c6c-11ea-8a94-00163e0acd5c'

I would have expected the setup to create a gluster network as it was part of
the initial configuration could this be a subject for an RFE?

What can I do to fix this warning?

Thanks,

Gianluca

It seems that your VM has no interface on the ovirtmgmt, but that network is
defined as mandatory.
Either add the network, or change it not to be mandatory.

So just to confirm all the options when I'm setting up the VM. This is Windows
Server 2019 so I'm selecting:

 - General:Operating System = Windows 2019 x64

 - System:Memory Size = 16GB

 - System:Total Virtual CPUs = 8

 - BootOptions:First Device = CD-ROM

 - BootOptions:Second Device = Hard Disk

Then in the Run Once config I'm attaching both the floppy and CD as well as
updating the predefined boot sequence.

When I installed the virtio-win package there are multiple VFD files in
/usr/share/virtio-win/. I'm assuming the win_amd64.vfd version is for
non-server Windows installs so I picked virtio-win_servers_amd64.vfd.

Assuming that's all ok, it just seems to be a strange permissions issue...

Hi

At least in oVirt 4.3 I've made the experience that you still need the
ovirt-guest-agent and that qemu-guest-agent alone was not sufficient.
Additionally the agent in Debian 9 is to old and does not start on oVirt 4.2 or
newer if I remember correctly.

I've often taken the newer package from Debian 10 which works, but others have
also worked out workarounds.

This blog linked below looks ok, to me, at least this author is correct about
the device change from /dev/virtio-ports/com.redhat.rhevm.vdsm
/dev/virtio-ports/ovirt-guest-agent.0 which the ovirt-guest-agent in Debian 9
and older doesn't recognize out of the box:

It does work that way.

I found that out as I was testing oVirt and had not created a separate ISO
Domain. I believe it was Strahil who pointed me in the right direction.

So if one does not have an ISO Domain, it is no longer required. Along with
the fact that ISO Domains are or in the process of being deprecated.

Don't think you have to use the ISO Domain any longer.

You can upload to a Data Domain and when you highlight the VM in the

there is a change cd option. That option will allow for attaching an ISO
from a Data Domain.

That is what I recall when I was using oVirt a month or so ago.

[ovirt-users] Re: Windows VirtIO drivers

2020-03-25 Thread eevans
You have to copy the iso and vfd files to the ISO domain to make them available
to the vm’s that need drivers.

engine-iso-uploader options list

# engine-iso-uploader options upload file file file

Documentation is found here:

Subject: [ovirt-users] Windows VirtIO drivers

Hi,

it seems the online documentation regarding the windows installation steps is
well out of date. Where is there any current documentation on where to get the
VirtIO drivers for a Windows installation?

>From a bit of Googling, it seems that I need to 'yum install virtio-win' on

Where is the documentation maintained and how do I open a bug on it?

Thanks, Shareef.

[ovirt-users] Re: how to use idrac interface as a vm network

2020-03-25 Thread eevans
The idrac 7 can use either LOM or usb. I’m not sure about 6 but the idrac shows
up as a usb nic in version 7 wih a link local ip, 169.254.0.X and allows the OS
passthrough mentioned.

Thanks for replying,

I know this setting, but I do want to use the dedicated nic.

The curious thing is that the MAC adress of the dedicated NIC into IDRAC
setting differs from the MAC reported into ovirt:

So it lest me suppose that there is a kind of virtual card derived from the
physical one, can anybody confirm this?

Can't say that I've tried it, but it looks like it's a setting within iDRAC

This link is for iDRAC 8, but it's probably similar for 7 and 9...

What am I supposed to do with this available interface?

PS: on HP hosts, no Ilo interface appears in host network tab

What version of idrac? You can configure power management fence agent through
the idrac interface. I have my idrac network on the default vlan and with the
user name and password you set using the settings in the screenshot attached.

I hope this helps.
