What are the pw_uid and pw_gid fields in the user info actually used
for? I did a quick read through the docs, and couldn't find any
information about what they do other than the fact that they're the
user id and group id.

Everything seems to be working fine except for roaming user POP
authentication.
I've tried a number of different tcpserver configs I've found in the docs
and through googling, but none seem to solve the problem.
Most likely your linux machine is configured to forbid root from logging in
remotely. You have to log in as a non-root user, and then use 'su' to aquire
root privileges.
