Coupon code problem.

2008-11-18 Thread figure8

Hello

Yesterday I wanted to order versions with the discount code (all
worked fine) but didn't remember my paypal password so did the process
again today.
But now the discount code doesn't work anymore and I didn't purchase
versions app.

Just a heads-up regarding the online registration form. Two things:

  1) Entering my valid EU-VAT reg. no. correctly removes the VAT (the
form says not applicable) from the registration form and total.
However, after clicking process, the VAT shows up again on the paypal
  page.

  2) My coupon in the mail shows with a red cross. This was the case to
begin with, then it appeared correctly once, now always red. Possibly
this is as a result of aborting the payment process because of the
included VAT above. I mailed you separately regarding the coupon

Its my understanding that VAT is charged as per the country of origin.
Hence, when you get things from Jersey, etc., you pay less or no VAT.

Yep, you pay the local rate.

If you are VAT registered you either don't pay the VAT or pay and then
reclaim back the full amount (that you actually paid whatever the rate)

Coupon code problems? let us help you

2008-11-18 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Everybody,

As some of you noticed we experienced some problems yesterday with our
purchasing server. It basically couldn't keep up with everyone who
was trying to buy Versions, which was absolutely stunning and
unexpected for us. So first of all, thanks to everyone for trying to
buy our software!

The instructions below are both for people who received a coupon code
from Beanstalk and people who received one from us directly.

If you had a coupon code, but it didn't work, please send an email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] with the following information, so we can sort
things out and get everyone their 10% discount as quickly as possible.

If you bought Versions, but didn't receive your 10% discount, include
the following information
- the email address you used for the paypal transaction
- your full name
- your coupon code
Please use the subject line Purchased, coupon code didn't work.

If you tried to buy Versions, but didn't because your coupon code did
not work, please include:
- your full name and email address
- your coupon code and where you obtained it.
Please use the subject line Coupon code didn't work, not purchased.

If you already sent us an email about problems with your coupon code,
there's no need to send another one following the above instructions.
We're going through every email we've received so far, the above
instructions are just here to help streamline the process and let
everyone know what information we need to recover their coupon codes.

Thanks,
- Dirk

Hi,

I tried sending a support email from the form you provide, but got a

of Versions, 1 for me, and 1 for a co-worker. However, when I try to
license them, it says An error occurred. Invalid license key. I
copy/pasted from the email I got with the codes, so there should not
be any typos.

Hopefully support monitors this group, and maybe they are aware that

Registration stuck at Processing...

2008-11-18 Thread Daniel

I'm having trouble getting my copy of Versions registered. I
successfully purchased a license this morning, and received the
license code in an email. I then upgraded to v1.0.1, but the upgrade
did not complete as expected--it stalled waiting for transactions to
complete or something like that. Eventually I killed it. When I
started Versions the About Versions dialog reported v1.0.1, so I
assume the upgrade when fine despite the botched restart...

Now I'm trying to register but it's stalled again. I typed my name and
email into the Register Versions dialog, checked I agree to the
Terms and clicked Register. And waited... And I'm still waiting
nearly an hour later. The top of the registration dialog says
Processing... but I'm starting to lose confidence. Please help.

workflow with multiple people editing same files

2008-11-18 Thread joseph

This is a bit of a newbie question, but I cannot get clarity on this,
and would like some help. At the moment myself and another are working
on the same project, committing our changes to beanstalk using
Versions each evening.

What is the correct process / workflow for committing these files?

I am not sure what the 'update' button actually does, does that
attempt to merge repository changes of that file with my file and
update, or does it overwrite my local file with the repository
version?

When do I attempt to merge using FileMerge - before / after / nothing
to do with the 'update' button?

Should I be pressing 'update' to update my entire working directory
before attempting to commit any files?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I have been unable to find
any solid documentation on how this works with Versions.

 - Showing the changed file counts for all my working copies in the
left column. That's just unnecessary. Maybe show me counts only for
 the one currently selected?

I absolutely love this feature, it's a great way to get a birds-eye
view of all my code!

Although I'm not clear how to tell versions to refresh all the
counts...

 - This is my big one: The color-dot indicators on the folders in the
 changed view.

I do agree with you here - useful in the All Files view, redundant in
the Changed view. And the dot-overlay does remind me of TortoiseSVN a
bit.

-

Of course I would be remiss if I did not give a huge bout of praise
for the new 1.0 features overall, and the product as a whole. Versions
is an incredible piece of software and makes me love owning a Mac. I
just bought my license!

much noise to the interface. I look at the changed view 90% of the

and unnecessary in the changed view.

Perhaps the solution is a preference to turn these on or off? Or only

Saving and opening bookmarks as files.

2008-11-18 Thread Zav

Versions is nice and friendly. What would be even friendly is to set
up server bookmarks as savable files that can be opened by another
user and install that bookmark on their copy of Versions. At this
little (sarcasm indended) company called Verizon, our team has Mac
users in Texas, Boston, New Jersey, New York and India. A problem is
the ease of setting up the connection to the SVN server. If I could
mail a saved bookmark to all the Versions users and say open this in
Versions, click the Update icon and then enter the location for your
local copy to start using our new synched database of all our
projects, this would be most excellent. I could just mail one file to
all new users, buy a copy of Versions and setup is complete. So
saving and opening server bookmark files would be a great boon to the
operation I'm trying to set up.

Thanks guys. I'm loving your products so far.

After Versions update I loose the repository

2008-11-18 Thread tyger

Hello
I was close to buy Versions but Im not happy with the following
situation:
Every time Versions has a new update, which I install, I cant access
the previous locally installed repository. Further on I cant access my
Beanstak Repos again, Versions freezes (need to close it by programm
manager). Dropping and recreating the bookmarks would be a nice
workaround but I still cant access my local repos, nor my Beanstalk
repos.
I have to delete the local repos bookmarks and to create a new one,
then reimport object folder, but of course all object versions are
gone, it looks all new. I cant work that way. I must be able to access
older object versions, even after updating Versions itself.

Further on it would be great if Versions would support external
Harddisks to remove local HD crash, etc. I cant use my Time Capsule.
Beanstalk works fine, but 15$ every month while I have an existing
Harddisk...

Just my 2 cents
Ty

Re: Versions keeps asking me to authenticate

2008-11-18 Thread danielwsmithee

I am having the same issue. It only showed up for me when I installed
the latest update which for me happened to be from 1.0B9 to 1.0.1. It
prompts me for authentication every 5-10 minutes like it is polling my
subversion server and it doesn't have the correct authentication. I
can however list, commit, checkout with no problems and I do not need
to authenticate.

I tried to post a comment with the contact us form on the website and
it appears to be broken.

Re: workflow with multiple people editing same files

2008-11-18 Thread joseph

That's a very in-depth response, Daniel, thank you! I have read
through the links you posted and the main realisation that I have come
to is that SVN does the clever stuff like merging, versioning, etc.,
and Versions app just provides a friendly interface to invoke those
clever tools. I have a few followup questions though:

1) why does Versions create 3 extra versions of the file if there is a
conflict? They kind of get in the way as I always have to modify the
main file and dont look at the .mine, .r19, .r20 ? Can it not just say
conflict, here's a fileMerge window for you to create a single file
from these two ?

2) every time I 'update' do I need to check the log for which files
have been updated and compare changes with files I have modified? I
don't see when you would use the 'diff' command, apart from times
where there has been a specific conflict that Versions notifies of.

3) If myself and my colleague update and commit regularly as we work
on the same project throughout the day and never see a 'conflict'
error from Versions, can we assume that at the end of the day our work
has been merged in both the repository and our working copies without
issue?

I think I am getting to grips with it, just trying to clear these
things in my head.

If you know which version you want to use, then you can just throw out the
file and replace it with one of the 3 versions, which are:
Your modified file (.mine)
The BASE of your modified file (.r19, i.e., the version you began editing)
The updated version of BASE, excluding your changes (.r20 -- the other
developer made changes to .r19 and committed, creating .r20).

Usually, I just go through the un-extensioned file and resolve the
conflicts, but sometimes this isn't possible and you just need to throw it
out and use one of those versions (like with images / other binary files).

You should just so you know what's going on and pre-empt problems. If there
is a conflict where it's not clear how the changes should be merged, svn
will let you know, but there's the other kind of conflict where someone
changed the file in a way that breaks functionality.

Yes. Except for issues where your changes conflict in a functional way with
theirs (like I said above).

It's up to you -- if a functional change takes place across many files, like
adding an image into an html file, then you could include both files in the
commit (M index.html, A image.jpg). Or, if a bug requires you to rework
many files, then you can commit all of the files at once with the message
Fixed X bug. It's kind of subjective what a revision is. Best to just
try out what works for you.

Keep in mind that if you want to revert a single change, you will be
reverse merging by revision numbers. It's easier if each revision is a
logical change and doesn't combine many changes in one commit that you'll
have to sort through after merging.

Starting from scratch - problems that need to be fix for the new user

2008-11-18 Thread Zav

Ok. I've just set up a brand spanking new SVN server ala terminal.
It is empty, there are no files in the repository I have set up. I
have Versions up and have created a bookmark to that server. My goal
is now to create a Working Directory so that I can populate that empty
folder. EVERY folder I attempt to use on my local drive reports it
is not a working copy. For someone setting up a server, this is
infuriating. Versions needs to be more forgiving and/or point the
user in the proper direction in the setup process.

FYI, I have set up the server as so:
mkdir -p ~/Documents/svn/projects
svnadmin create ~/Documents/svn/projects

Then I uncommented the access lines and password lines in
svnserve.conf and removed leading spaces. A user was added to the
passwd file.

Then in Terminal...
svnserve --daemon --root ~/Documents/svn/projects/

I launched Versions and successfully created and connected to that
repository bookmark on that machine.

Now, attempting to create a local working copy on any folder on my Mac
results in a message like this'/Users/zav/Desktop/Local' is not a
working copy.
Also, attempting to select the SVN Server Bookmark and perform a check
out, to an empty folder on my desktop does not highlight the Checkout
button even if the folder is selected. If I type in the name of the
folder that is selected, Checkout enables. *** Selecting a folder in
the folder/file list below at this point should put the name of the
folder in the Save as: text entry field and enable the Checkout
button.

Explaining Versions' activation process

2008-11-18 Thread Dirk Stoop

I thought it would be helpful to give everybody who is concerned about
Versions' activation system some insight in the actual design of the
system and our rationale behind developing it.

The two most typical approaches to handling software registration are:

(1) Define an algorithm for validating license codes and issue buyers
of the software a unique code that, most often combined with a second
data field (e.g. your name or email-address), is used by the
application to internally calculate if the code is valid.
Subsequently: keep track of Serial Surfer and other hubs of pirated
license codes to build and maintain an ever-growing blacklist that's
included in every subsequent update of the app.

(2) Issue a random and unique serial number to every user and store it
in a registration server. The application, when registered, asks the
registration server if the license code is valid.

The second method is referred to as activation, and unfortunately for
us, activation has gotten quite a bad name, because a bunch of
software companies —mostly some of the really big ones— have been
pretty creative in figuring out additional draconian ways to enforce
their licensing model. I personally feel that many software
publishers have lost touch with the goal of registration: To let
people who bought the software use it. We all use a bunch of
different software ourselves, and everyone in our team hates it when
an application treats us like we're potential criminals.

Another thing that's associated with software activation is calling
home, meaning that an application, at every launch —or at least
frequently— will try to reach its activation server to ask if it is
still authorized to run.

Versions does not call home and does not ship with any hidden draconic
copy-protection measures.

When you register Versions, the app contacts our registration server,
which —given you entered a valid license code— returns license data
that's then stored in a file locally on your computer. This license
file is tied to the computer it was registered with, which is the only
way to make pirating the software harder than simply copying this
license file to another machine. (It's stored in “~/Library/
Application Support/Versions” by the way, the file is named “License”,
you can open it up with any text editor to see what's in there). The
only —to humans— usable information that's sent to the registration
server are the contents of the name and email fields from the
registration window. What we can do with that personal information is
strictly limited, for the end-user's protection, in the Versions
license agreement.

We've decided to use an activation-based scheme in Versions for the
following reasons:

- It takes away any need to create and maintain blacklists, which
means we won't have to waste time chasing pirates, when we could
otherwise spend that time on improving our app and supporting our
customers.

- Versions does not need to match a license key with a name and email
address. We feel strongly that people should have the right to give
their license code away or sell their copy of Versions. With the way
we have implemented our registration system, that's possible and the
code will just work.

- There is no need to implement additional annoying copy-protection
measures, such as checks over the local network whether multiple
machines are using the same license key. We trust people's own
judgement in deciding whether they should use the same license code on
a second machine or should buy another license. (Our stance is: if you
use a couple of machines by yourself: please go ahead. If your co-
workers need copies of Versions, please let them buy their own copies.
We updated the Versions license agreement in release 1.0.2 to reflect
this).

- The biggest thing to keep in mind is that, except for when you
replace your Mac's logic board, if you've registered Versions once, it
will remain registered. And if you do get your Mac's logic board
replaced or buy a new computer, simply re-enter your license key and
it will just work. We can't take anybody's ability to use the app
away. Software that calls home can stop working at any moment.
Software with a built-in license code blacklist could potentially stop
working the next time you update to the latest release.

Our registration server is configured to allow re-registration within
reasonable limits, but will automatically block a license key if it's
being used all over the world at the same time. If for any reason
your code gets blocked by our server, three members of our team
automatically get an email to let them know that someone who might
have a legitimate right to activate Versions couldn't, and you'll
receive a descriptive error message.

If it turns out we get to many of these notifications, or in other
words: that our server's limits aren't reasonable enough, we only have
to adjust them in one place. And if somehow someone publishes your
license key on a warez site and it

Wow.. I have just updated from beta to 1.0.2, and the app is

I guess it has something to do with Versions updating status of ALL
registered working copies in the background.

I have about may be 30 or 40 working copies configured in Versions
right now, and Versions rally is taking its time to update all of
them, bringing my Mac's HD to its knees (iMac's I/O was never very

BTW, the waiting for transactions to finish most probably is related

One thing I would alter in the UX is when you checkout from a
repository it creates a holder in Versions - no problem there. But
when you go to delete the bookmark it doesn't prompt or actually
delete the files. Maybe you can do something similar to iTunes when
deleting in the program it prompts you to delete, but then it asks you
if you want to keep the files or not.

Creating/Applying Patches

2008-11-18 Thread Chris

One glaring omission I see is that with TortoiseSVN you can create/
apply patches. This is essential when working on large projects where
you don't have commit privileges (for me WordPress is such an example).
