MPEG Streamclip (a favorite) is a great free conversion tool that does

Been batch converting the files in mpeg streamclip pc for over a day now.
Vegas loves the avi files; cuts through 'em like butter. (Thought I have it
on good authority it's preferred format is HD MPEG2)

thanks everyone for your help!

Ronen - my experience - and that of a bunch of people I've read on

That might (or might not) be what your problem is.
I had thought that Sony Vegas got past this, because it appeared to
 import any format.
But later I saw that it, too, had problems with some mp4 Xacti files.

You could use MPEG Streamclip - which Jay suggested - but I'm not
sure that the PC version has batch convert - last time I checked only
the Mac version did - but I can't find any answer to this online so
 download it and see.

I use VisualHub on my Mac to convert mp4 AVI files to .dv format
for Final Cut Pro (which hates different codecs).
But they're only 640x480 clips and I've just seen that your footage
is HD, so perhaps .dv wouldn't be appropriate for you.

Caution converting to AVI: I know Vegas has problems with some AVI
files. You can read up about this in Vegas support forums.

Well, I came too late to help, but I do have a question for you, Johnnie.

(which I might as well ask in this public forum, in case the info benefits
any other videomakers.)

When I record video on my treo, as I'm capturing it, it looks great, but
when it saves, the compression kills the video quality. This is clearly a
software issue and not a hardware issue, as again during capture it looks
'clean'. Is there any way/hack to record at a higher datarate in the treo?

The Month of Apple Bugs http://projects.info-pull.com/moab/13 project
is pretty much what it sounds like — a month devoted to finding, proving and
publishing the details of exploits in Apple hardware and software. Any
coincidence that it's scheduled for the same month as MacWorld can be
chalked up to ironic humor on the part of cheeky hackers.

So far, the biggest story has been the discovery of a buffer-overflow
vulnerability http://news.com.com/2100-1002_3-6146615.html14 that can
affect Windows and Macintosh machines running QuickTime 7.1.3. All the
attacker has to do is send a bogus call to a the RTSP (Real Time Streaming
Protocol) URL handler via HTML, JavaScript or through a QuickTime QTL file.

How can you defend yourself? According to LMH and Kevin Finisterre who
discovered
the vulnerability http://projects.info-pull.com/moab/MOAB-01-01-2007.html
15, The only potential workaround would be to disable the rtsp:// URL
handler, uninstalling Quicktime or simply live with the feeling of being a
potential target for pwnage.

Re: [videoblogging] Vixy.net - download Youtube videos in any format

2006-12-21 Thread Ronen
This is great, thanks!

On 12/21/06, Mike Meiser [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

   Howdy,

Just wondering if anyone here is using Vixy.net.

 http://vixy.net/flv_converter

Basically it can download and transcode not just Youtube videos but ANY
video to just about any format.

On top of it it's open source.

There was some mention of it a while back on a thread regarding it's use
 on
Dreamhost, but noone really discussed it much.

 http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/message/53121

Basically, if it works well it could be HUGELY useful for consuption side
i.e. viewing side services... everything from Democracy, to Fireant, to
Mefeedia or Dabble... alowing such service to act similar to the Sling box
in time and format shifting any video online to any networked device of
 your
choosing wether that be a set top box, a cell phone, or any wifi enabled
 media player.

That's my primary interest in it.

Since it only does transcoding from Flash to other formats it's not that
great for the production side. I.E. for videobloggers.

I'm really stoked about this and was wanting to know if anyone has used it
yet and how well it has worked for them.

As for producers, I'm also waiting for something like this to come out
 that
transcodes the major formats like MP4 into Flash.

In this way platforms like Wordpress could impliment such a transcoding
engine right into the source code so that any video you posted to your
 blog
would automatically be available not only in the original downloadable mp4
but also a web viewable Flash version.

As it is one day software like this when combined with webservices like
bloglines or odeo or mefeedia could help you bring all your subscriptions
to a cell phone, a pda, a set top box, or any networked media device.

If it works it could be an amazing future now that wifi enabled devices
 like
the Nokia N series are starting to support aggregation of video podcasts
 in
 limited formats.

My biggest interest these days is a future where videoblogs go beyond
 simply
the desktop. Building out the network beyond the desktop to a host of
independant devices so your media and everyone's media can flow anywhere
 in
the world wether it be a networked media player in the back seat of
 minivan
or SUV in your garage or directly to your cell phone or PDA as you walk
 down
the street. Inline transcodiing is a major part of this vision.

your interest in keeping the community strong and vibrant. I
appreciate your conversation, your input, your thoughts on everything.
It's been really good having more minds in the conversation.
 Collaboration can be very helpful.

Here's what we've done today towards making it better:

 #1) Opt-In - We've posted that we're going to fix this. We'll move to
opt-in, and we'll continue to reach out to people we've added, and
make sure everyone's okay with our effort. We'll work fast on this.

#2.) Permalinks - These fell off in the relaunch, but what we did
today is even better, I feel. Check out this page as a sample:

http://network2.tv/episode/2098608/ (an episode of Batman Geek)

We've included a big fat Visit Website next to the show name. We
display the Original Post, the Original Media, the Visit Website link
again over to the right. We've put the original blog post underneath
the video screen (though it looks like we have to tweak presentation-
whoops), with yet another link to original post.

We've removed the Comments field because it might be confused to be
similar to a blog comments field, not a show review (what do you think
of Batman Geek) field, as we'd intended. (We're open to better ideas
 how to work that field).

If you think this is a step in the right direction, let me know. We're
working our head off to make sure people's concerns are addressed, and
that we're doing right by the majority of folks. (Can't please
EVERYONE, but I sure don't want 2451 enemies).

ONE NOTE: Our developers have the next two weeks off, after logging
several 90+ hour weeks. The rework we've done today is all I can get
through until they've had lots of beers and sand. Please bear with me
 on that.

 Best to you and yours,

  Dear
Mr. Sullivan:

Thank you for writing to share with me your concerns regarding internet
neutrality. As you may know, I support net neutrality. The open architecture of the Internet has been
the critical element that has made it the most revolutionary communications medium since the advent of
the television.

  Each
day on the Internet, views are discussed and debated in an open forum without fear of censorship or reprisal.
The Internet as we know it does not discriminate among its users. It does not decide who can enter
its marketplace and it does not pick which views can be heard and which ones silenced. It is the embodiment
of the fundamental democratic principles upon which our nation has thrived for hundreds of years.

  I
have always, and will continue to, strongly and unequivocally support these principles. As I have worked
throughout my Senate career to make broadband access readily available throughout New York State and
our nation, I believe that maintaining an open Internet coupled with more broadband access is necessary
if we are to meet the promise and the potential of the Internet to disseminate ideas and information,
enhance learning, education and business opportunities for all Americans and improve and uplift our citizenry.

  We
must embrace an open and non-discriminatory framework for the Internet of the 21

   st

century. Therefore, it is my intention to be an original cosponsor of the net neutrality legislation
proposed by Senators Dorgan and Snowe to ensure that open, unimpaired and unencumbered Internet access
for both its users and content providers is preserved as Congress debates the overhaul of our nation's
telecommunications laws.

  Thank
you again for writing about this issue that is important to me and to so many of my constituents. Please
be assured that I will fight any efforts that would fundamentally alter the inherently democratic structure
of the Internet. Updates on this and many other important issues being discussed before the United States
Senate, can be found on my website http://clinton.senate.gov.

Hillary Rodham Clinton

Re: [videoblogging] Vegas Compression Help

Under the custom setting tab, click 'streaming' and click 'fast start'.Now your vegas quicktime videos will load right away(Now if I could only get Vegas to figure out the right aspect ratio of my widescreen minidv ntsc !)
On 3/26/06, WWWhatsup [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi

To some extent it's a matter of personal choice, and it depends what
you want to do with your video, eg make iPod compatible etc or just
embed it in a webpage.

If you are using the latest update of Vegas6 if you go to your
rendering options you will see 'Main Concept) AVC/AAC and
then in the drop down box 'Apple Ipod Video' - that does work
fo ipods. Runs about 600kbps - around 2.5 MB/minute

The problem is, that if you embed that in a webpage it won't
play right away - 'smartstart as apple calls it' - but will have to
be downloaded all the way before playing.. But if your videos short
that doesn't matter too much. You could use
http://embedthevideo.com/ on it.

One way to get around that might be to upload your video to
somewhere like youtube, veoh, dailymotion, google video or similar, that will
convert it into flash video, and give you a code to embed it in your page.

Personally I don't think much of the quicktime6 options
that are in vegas6.

To make video that is 'smartstart' you would need to render to
video for windows.dv ntsc and then take that and put it thru
quicktime pro 7. Another story.

It's a good idea to make a DV NTSC master anyway, which you can export
back out to tape for archiving, and also, perhaps, to render to mpg2 for DVD.

Myself I use realmedia9 @225kbps for my pages, but I'm old school.

I haven't gotten Vegas to compress even decently. What I do is export a basically uncompressed vegas file in mov, then recompress that .mov file in Sorenson (though other have good results using Quicktime Pro as a compressor).
What final format do you want (mov, wmv, etc) ?Let me know how it comes out!On 3/24/06, littleblueriver7

I probably shouldn't post this...While I also have mixed feeling about the posting of a death, a lot of people seem to think that it is wrong to discuss things other people are doing wrong because it is 'incitement'. Either I am radically misunderstanding everyone, or the logical conclusion of that thought process is not only to avoid 'fighting,' debate, and discussion with other cultures, but to not interact with them at all.
Which I do not understand. On 2/5/06, David Howell [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

question his intentions. Either he wanted show something he thought

Regardless...I am not impressed.

the catch is that after one year you are supposedly hooked and now have
to pay the normal monthly fees which aren't bad, but not the cheapest
around. also, they might eventually interest you into dedicated
hosting, which, again is not the cheapest around.

i figured for $9.24, i could use it for scratch space, check out
Dreamhost and wordpress since everyone seems to like them and grab a
new domain name. so i did.

of course, in a year, the competition will be offering 10x more for
1.95/month ;)

What's really interesting is that View Askew itsself is using unliscensed copyrighted music in the Clerks 2 videoblogs. (Namely, in this case, 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly' main titles by Sergio Leone.) Under Fair Use, Andrew is showing a clip of it. What about the music?
Every Clerks2 vlog is using music. I don't think they're concerned about it -- just don't raise any flags, because I've been enjoying them ;-)Beyond which -- as per the 'can rocketboom show ads' bit -- the Clerks 2 vlogs are clearly just that -- a promotional tool / ad. View Askew
wants them to spread as far as possible. On 1/18/06, andrew michael baron

Use Vegas. It's intuitive and inexpensive. The only thing it's really
terrible at are if you want a simple way to manage multiple version /
drafts / takes of an edit. Otherwise, I strongly reccomend.

So far as the tapes, you're going to see a quality decrease
immediately, a noticable one on the third time. If you're only worried
about the rendering quality (ie, 'internet size,') you should be able
to go a few times on a tape without it being noticable at the lower
resolution. (Realize, however, that you are also taping over the
sound, and that that may suffer.) Just make sure to clean out your
camera tapehead thingie every few months, lest your tapes begin to
glitch.Looking forward to checking out your videoblogs. On 1/16/06, usadutch2001 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well here it goes;

The ingredients so far

-Bought a digital videocam , Panasonic PV-GS150 3ccd minidv ,
http://tinyurl.com/7v93n
(also spare battery, UV filter, mono-pod, tapes and a 3W light no
microfoon yet)
-I'm building a website using WordPress http://vlogmatic.com
-Have content in my head and its around everywhere.
-I read the discussions about duration and publishing of video and
all the artistic issues with vlogs.
-Have a fast PC with windows XP sp2 and cable internet.

Then I got stuck on a few technical questions;

1. What the heck should I use to edit the video's with?

I have the free windows XP moviemaker but it is too limited for my
desire.
I know you can buy all sorts of add-ons but I believe there is no
development for moviemaker anymore.
However spending over $200 for editing software is not in the
budget. What is the next best alternative?
(Functions I like/need ; transitions, different fonts, use of
green-screen, audio editing, adding sounds and clips)
I have not yet decided on the publishing format.

Is Vegas movie studio + dvd platinum a good choice?
 Or
Pineaccle Studio media suite 10 ?

2. What are the must have software utility's and/or gadgets? you use
on a regular basis?

3. How many times can I use a tape?
(Consider it being a good quality tape)

4. Do you subscribe to any video magazines?

Ok for now these are my questions and I would appreciate any answers
very much.
Anything else i did not mention would be important to think of? (yup
a catch all question)

If I'm not mistaken, their player is based off of VLC, a universal video player. However, I haven't been able to open their proprietary .gvp format videos in any editor or convertor.I think they're aware that, as with the first implimentation of google video, this is just a step-process towards bringing big media to where google wants everyone to be. Still annoying.

I don't know about that. Have you ever taught a video

The principle is great, within a medium. Once you leave the

Subject: [videoblogging] My feed needs to move...
Hi,I'm in an interesting situation right now: the place where I have my vlog is closing down,so I'm in the process of moving all my posts to a new vlog (in blogger). I'm OK with re-publishing my posts (they're only 18), but I have a question regaring my feed:
Can I copy/paste the code to my new vlog, and will it stay the same?Or should I get a new feed?Right now my feed is:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/LivingWithFallasMy vlog:
http://livingwithfallas.myblogsite.comObviously my main concern is the people who are subscribed to it. As I wouldn't wantthem to have to subscribe again. I don't know if this is possible or if it's better to just
create a new one and let everyone know about it. (?)Any one out there has any idea? Thanks very much.Juan

Re: [videoblogging] Re: What editing software?

2005-11-28 Thread Ronen

If you're stuck in windows (aka no FCP) and avid is out of your range, go with Vegas Video.

It's really quite good, and when using FCP I often find myself annoyed
at the features I expect from Vegas which it doesn't support.

Also, for editing something with a shorter length, it's actually better. On 11/28/05, Joan Khoo [EMAIL PROTECTED]

what's DV-L ? Also, the main fault in Vegas it you can't really
tag source footage and have multiple options / sub-sequences.
That's why for smaller/straight video, it comes in handy. And
strikes me as more precise than the 'big boys'.On 11/28/05, Michael Ridley [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

even some cheap-o under $100 beginner version as well...

I would suggest Ulead. It has a lot of features for the money and
overall it does a good job.

However,
They have a free MP4 plug-in for the program. It takes forever to get
access to download it and then you spend time in perdition trying to
actually download the sucker. It took weeks and a 4:30am download to
get it.

I installed it but it doesn't work. I use QT instead. But the main
part of the program works really well.

Can't go wrong with either one of them - try before you buy.

Andrew Barron (and the blue ball people) used Danny Elfman music in friday's rocketboom, to great effect.

The real question, I think, is whether when doing such things it makes
more sense to link to the source music (which I've been doing) or leave
it unlinked, (presumably the hopes that then no one will notice).
I seriousely don't know which is more effective. Any

Am I incorrect that a 'cover' version of a song requires that a deal

Re: [videoblogging] Matching music to video?

2005-11-21 Thread Ronen

..
usually one is looking for something more ...specific, both in terms of
emotion and timing, than in a guide so simple -- music can carry
multiple meanings depending on the footage.

Most of my skill in this area (and I just listen to a lot of music and
use music from memory) came from spending a long time listening to
movie scores, watching films with only the score playing, and
re-playing the same video many (many) times with different music.
You'll quickly see how different peices of music shape the video.
(Also try moving the same peice of music around, creating different
sync points.)

I've been developing an extended education series on the subject to put on cinemalog, and I'll drop a line here when it begins.

Ronen

(ps- some examples of background music I've used are on the site, and
so far as creds I've also edited tons of film and ghostwritten the
'film music' section of a standard university music text)

Does anyone know of any book or internet resource
that doesn't just give free music but which suggests certain music (free or
otherwise) to convey emotions like sadness or tension or even joy,
etc?

I'm sure such a thing exists and I just have to
find it.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: great post of police misbehavior

2005-11-21 Thread Ronen

Given our medium and passions, it's a shame that -- if we at least
can't get rid of flame-wars-esque discussions -- we can't at least put
them in our chosen medium, to make them interesting and perhaps get
people involved and active (ie: content creators) by inspiring
reactions. (ie, this is a yahoo groups debate, not an actual vlog
debate)

hm... now THAT would be interesting.

(Obviousely, I don't there's much to debate... but using it as a forum
sounds interesting... instead of 2-minute responses, 2-minute videos,
with 5 days prep... etc, etc. Not for this debate, probably,
but food for thought)On 11/21/05, gabe_perardua [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I have to say that this is a much nicer thread than what is happening
on my vlog at the moemnt with the comments. I've just spent the last 2
hours removing hate comments about this posting. I tried to leave as
many comments that actually were about the event rather than blatant
hate comments. I've had a few before, but never 90 on one post. Lesson
I have learned from this:

Even though it is just a personal vlog for documentation sake, it
doesn't make me immune to the shit that's out there.

I love all you vloggers. Let's just remeber that we have to look out
for eachother, and support wachother's freedom of speech, or freedom
to document. Whether that be for personal celebrity, political gain,
to pick up chicks, or just for the sake of vlogging.

I still wish and anticipate and can't wait to see more applied use of

Re: [videoblogging] Re: LIVE AND UNCENSORED IN NEW YORK CITY

2005-11-18 Thread Ronen

I got a chance to meet with Cavett -- he seemed very nice and open in
person, just media-weary. I take it that he would have been glad
to speak with you, if not for you 'silly camera'.On 11/18/05, Share [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Wow! Fan-bloody-tastic!
Can't wait to see your vlog about it and congrats on experiencing such
an unusual event.
Sorry to hear about Mr. Cavett. I remember him, too and he was an
amazingly aware and articulate host.

cheers.

That was the title of an event held this evening at Steven Kasher
Gallery, 521 W. 23rd St, NYC. It was sponsored by a 501C group called
The Creative Coalition. Membership costs $250 a year. However, a
great art exhibit consisting of body images in video can be seen for
free for a few more days. I suggest you attend.

I contacted them a few hours before the event, said I was a vlogger
(someone who did video and posted it on the Internet) and asked to be
put on the list.

I held my breath as I checked in downstairs. My name was on the
list and I found myself mixing with the media elite. Catherine Crier,
anchor of Court TV, was the moderator. The panel consisted of
actor/comedian/writer Richard Belzer (Law Order:SVU), Time Blake
Nelson (Actor, Syiuana, Meet the Fockers, Minority Report, o Brother,
Where Are Thou?), Dick Cavett (legendary Emmy Award winning talk show
host) and Bill Devlin (a born-again Christian with enough sense to
stay in the Democratic Party whom I had once debated on the issue of
human reproductive cloning at Haverford College in Pennsylvania).

Thanks to my good Christian friend, Bill Devlin, I was made aware of
the event and managed to get in--even though there was a notice that
press credentials would be checked. I took a Time Magazine with my
picture in it along to flash if I was challenged. It proved not to be
necessary.

I also urged three other vloggers( Jay Dedman, Jonny Goldstein and
Adam Quirk) to join me in a vloggers-take-on-the-establishment
exercise. Adam was working. Jay and Jonny never got back to me. I
went alone.

I'm always amazed at how thin the partition is between the plebian
world of everyday-vlogger-life and the glittering world of famous
celebrities and people with real power.

So, there I was in the elite world of blue activism (???). There
was an open bar (always to be avoided) and orderves enough to make you
feel totally elite.

On the walls were ads, fabulous and sexy ads, which you'd have to
spend half a lifetime thumbing through magazines to find. I never
knew so many sexy and hot ads existed. I got to film them all for my
vlog (or vlogs) about this event.

I handed out my pink slips promoting Join the Media Revolution
with links to Freevlog and this site. Of course, I plugged my own
site and email address at the end.

Waiting in line at the bathroom, I gave my pink fliers to two of the
organizers of the event. Events on the wall of the gallery looked
very liberal and leftist to me. No problem there.

I joined the audience and stood up against a wall near the front
filming the entire event. It was quite fascinating. I filmed famous
people telling stories about famous people...including Dick Cavet
talking about how Yoko Ono and John Lennon who sang a song entitled (I
believe) Women are the niggers of the world--and how that caused
censorship which he avoided with a lead-in that got more complaints
than the song didetc, etc.

Well, after it was all over, I got to smooze with the celebs. I
gave Catherine Crier a pink flier and told her that vlogging was the
new revolution which was bound to raise interesting new legal issues
in the near future. At least it got into her purse.

Then I turned my camera on Click Cavett, one of my 'old heroes' of
television. I couldn't resist the urge to say: Mr. Cavett, I vlog
and put my videos on the Internet. Could I ask you a 'politically
incorrect' question?

Cavett looked open so I popped the question.

How old are you? I asked.

How old do you think I am? Cavett replied.

You're older than me (I'm 67). You have to be at least 75. (I was
being kind. He's in his 80s I suspect).

Oh, 'you and your silly little camera' (italics mine) Cavett
replied and moved on without answering my question.

So, tonight one of my 'idols' died. The man who was always upfront
and free and who took political correctness to task was 'too
traditionally' uptight to tell me his real age. That was really sad,
for me.

Bill Devlin, my Christian friend, who had enabled me to attend, made
fun of me for being an Immortalist when he realized I was the fellow
who had been filming him all evening.

It was a great event and I'll be doing a vlog about it. You'll have
to wait a couple days.
