[videoblogging] Re: NYCLU Sues NYPD for Harassing Photographers
Big ups to the ACLU for taking this up. The right to document our surroundings via words, pictures, sound, and video is a basic right in a democratic society. Thanks for sharing this. I'll be following it. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, WWWhatsup [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: NYCLU Sues NYPD for Harassing Photographers December 6, 2007 -- The New York Civil Liberties Union today filed a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of a Columbia University graduate student of Indian descent who was unlawfully handcuffed and detained in July after a police officer saw him snapping photographs near a subway station in upper Manhattan. * http://www.nyclu.org/files/nyclu_complaint1.pdfThe NYCLU's Complaint (PDF) * http://www.nyclu.org/files/nyclu_letter_to_kelly1.pdfThe NYCLU's May 2006 Letter to Commissioner Kelly (PDF) The NYPD has a history of harassing photographers and violating their First Amendment rights, particularly those who fit certain ethnic profiles. This is the second lawsuit the NYCLU has recently filed against the NYPD as part of an effort to force the Department to adopt policies and training so that officers will understand and respect the First Amendment rights of photographers and filmmakers. In our society, people have a clear right to document activity in public places without being hassled by the police, said Donna Lieberman, NYCLU executive director. Arun was taking photos, something protected by the Constitution, but the color of his skin made him a target of suspicion. The police should know better than to engage in this sort of ugly, unlawful behavior. The plaintiff, Arun Wiita, a 26-year-old Columbia graduate student in the M.D./Ph.D. program, was arrested shortly after he embarked on a planned 10-day project of photographing all 468 subway stations and their surrounding streetscapes. He was standing on the sidewalk at 207th Street and 10th Avenue taking pictures with a point-and-shoot digital camera when an NYPD officer interrupted him. Though Mr. Wiita was entirely cooperative, explained his project to the officer and showed him his Columbia identification, the officer handcuffed Mr. Wiita had him stand on a busy street corner for a half an hour. During that time, the officer reviewed Mr. Wiita's pictures and called in information over his radio. Two plainclothes police officers also arrived on the scene, questioned Wiita and viewed his photographs. Following the public interrogation, the officers released Wiita from the handcuffs and allowed him to leave. I was surprised and upset that I could be handcuffed on the street for taking a photograph, Wiita said. What was really disheartening was that I knew this had probably happened before and that it could happen again to anyone. Christopher Dunn, NYCLU associate legal director and lead counsel in the case, said many other photographers have reported similar incidents and that the NYPD was fully aware of these problems as a result of a letter the NYCLU sent to NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly in May 2006. People cannot be arrested or handcuffed for taking pictures, Dunn said. Photography is fully protected by the First Amendment, and police investigations into photographers must be sensitive to that. The NYPD clearly has failed to sufficiently train and supervise its officers to ensure that people can take photographs without fear of police harassment. Also serving as counsel in the case are Timothy Foster and Benjamin Kleinman, who are NYU Law School students participating in the Civil Rights Clinic. [videoblogging] What I like about you
Um...Nothing like the holidays to bring out some good emotional turmoil on and offline (don't ask!). With all the angst here are some things I like about this group: You helped me get started with videoblogging. That changed my life, led me to several interesting jobs, helped me connect with some wonderful people. When I am at my day job frustrated with my cubicle-bound existence, I can check into the list and go somewhere else at least in my mind. It's a touchstone for me, even though I'm not as active on the group as I have been in the past, it's part of who I am; involvement in this group has been important in my life, and I would miss it if it were not here. The group may at some point wither away, replaced by other forums. If that happens, then c'est la vie. It'll be a historical reference point, like the Beats, or Paris in the 20's or whatever. Movements come and go. But it seems like there is still some juice left here, and I still enjoy the flavor. Where else are Heath, Gena, Scoble, Gerry T., Cheryl, and Richard Bluestein and everyone else going to connect and collide in this way? It's a crazy mix of motivations that brings us together in this imaginary space, but I still find this group interesting, thought provoking, and useful. And I enjoy the fact that new people keep popping up and wading into the thick of things. So to all the people behind the posts, thanks for making this group happen and for keeping it going.

DLTQ was a provocative, personal, exploration of the medium of videoblogging. Congrats on a rich, varied project. And best of luck on your next project where you will be focusing on online video and civil society. For folks who want to get inside Raymond's head, he's the guest on this week's Par-tay where we'll be talking about how online video will shape the future of politics. http://jonnygoldstein.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Raymond M. Kristiansen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey all, I remember well when I first got into videoblogging, and I joined this mailing-list, and I got to know so many people who were doing interesting things with videoblogging. This was in late 2004, and the movement was still relatively small then. Today, if we can even talk about a movement anymore, it has grown much bigger. There are thousands of people on this mailing-list, and sites like youtube, blip.tv and others have given the regular people opportunities for mediation that we could only dream about years ago. Almost from the very beginning, one of my main interests related to videoblogging has been political videoblogging. As in: How does videoblogging change politics? Does it change it? If so, how? Who is the agent behind this change? How could political _organizations_ use videoblogging as a sort of knowledge management? A way to remember political processes and make politics seem less of something just for people in some ivory tower. A way to connect with the people in ways that you simply cannot do through the main-stream media. In mid 2005, while I was doing some videoblogging experiments within my political party in Norway, I was quoted as saying this in a bbc online article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4229698.stm): Today in Norway, many youth are feeling disillusioned with politics, says Kristiansen. They feel that politics is all the same. And if I can interview people, put them online, it lowers the barrier. I have since in different ways probed this question. How can politicians, or NGOs, or others, communicate with - for instance - the youths in a way that becomes authentic? Is more authentic than the broadcast model of putting on that suit, the mask, and talking for 30 seconds in an elevator-pitch about X important topic. On my personal vlog/blog, www.dltq.org, I put out a lot of videos, most of them long and boring, some of them short, some of them innovative in some way, but too many of them just being fluff. Now, fluff is good and all, but sometimes we want to go deeper. So, last week I decided to end DLTQ, to end this site and to move on. My messages to this mailing list the last months has mostly been about political videoblogging. What is happening around the world today? What are the best case studies? What can we learn from whatever people are doing in the UK, Italy, USA or India? I received some tips, and I have also been exploring the current status quo of political videoblogging (including the various projects involving youtube), but overall I feel that I lack the overview. There are a few great sites out there, like for instance www.personaldemocracy.com - but I often feel that such sites lack a true international scope. So I am currently in the process of preparing for my next site, which will not be personal as such, but a team effort. The domain is not ready yet, but I will give it to you once it is. So far we are two people living in Denmark who have committed ourselves to it, but I am looking for other partners, preferably in other countries and continents. So: Are you interested in the meeting-point of politics and new media? Are you interested in how mediated politics can change how civil society works and develops? Do you want to be part of a small group of bloggers that will deal with these and similar questions? Personally, I think it would be great if we could be 5-6 people from different regions. 5-6 people that could together edit a site that could add to the plethora of sites dealing with these issues. Part of the goal of the site would be to point at best practice from around the world. It would also be to publish our own video once a week with updates from whatever is happening, as well as interviewing some regular people about issues that matter to them. Something like Ten Questions: http://www.10questions.com/ but with an international profile, and being a site that also goes meta a lot. Even though videoblogging is going main-stream, we must remember that this is still about the people. The individuals who for all kinds of reasons make movies and put them on the internet. Have a great day/evening!, Best regards, Raymond M. Kristiansen 2004-07: www.dltq.org [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I've been asked to join the new team, serving as VP of Product Development, and will be heading up FireAnt's transition (among other projects) as we re-launch everything under the Odeo brand later this year. First of all, I want to say Thank You to everyone in the videoblogging community who supported FireAnt along the way, especially Jay Dedman, Daniel Salber, Erik Radmall, and Clint Sharp, who were instrumental in launching this project. We met a lot of wonderful creative people, and made some really important lifelong friendships. It's been an amazing privilege to contribute to this dynamic and innovative community, and especially to have been involved from such an early stage. I also want to thank Jonathan Weiss, Drew Reynaud, and Jesse Boley who continued FireAnt's technology development over the past year, which was demo'd at Video on the Net in March 2007. When we first launched ANTs Not TV at Vloggercon in January 2005, there were about 20 active videobloggers â we knew each of them personally and worked with most of them to create those magical RSS feeds with enclosures. It was amazing to see all these video channels updating over time and to watch them in a unified experience. There was nothing else like it. It was clear that something powerful was happening. It was a new kind of television, and yet it was not like TV at all â it was open to anyone and the possibilities seemed endless. And it began to spread⦠thanks to the many talented and creative video producers, educators, and evangelists. While FireAnt had its share of struggles along the way as a start up, I'm encouraged that the ideas we helped pioneer have grown incredibly stronger over the past few years. This Not TV (now more often called Internet TV) is really changing the media culture, and it's having profound social effects. The medium is enabling new voices and conversations. The playing field is being leveled â the barriers between Internet TV and TV are disintegrating. So it's up to us to create what we want to see and share⦠We don't have to rely on Rupert Murdoch and Sumner Redstone to create our culture. Thank goodness! [videoblogging] Re: If you conduct interviews, I would like your opinion
One of the most important things is to really enjoy interviewing people. Be happy to be there. Your subject will sense that and loosen up. You may be nervous (a la Scoble interviewing Gates) but if you are genuinely interested in what that person has to say and are excited about having the chance to find out their story, your subject will respond to that. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Ed Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Robert, wow, what a great list of things to do/not do in order to conduct a knockout interview. You really hit on some good stuff there. I like the point of clarifying jargon with the point of view of the listener in mind. You see that missed so many times I know we all need to hear that again and again. I just added a post to the http://www.conductknockoutbroadcastinterviews.com/blog/ that suggests we move our dress code up a notch when doing interviews that the guest and/or listeners will not see. I think our dress affects our performance in subtle ways and will help us focus on the things you have suggested. OK, Robert, thanks for that great info, and please continue to offer suggestions, comments, etc. Edward W. Smith. On 9/2/07, Robert Scoble [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I've interviewed many of tech's biggest names (Gates, Schwartz, Chambers, Ballmer, etc) for my video show, ScobleShow.com. Some things I've learned: 1) Don't go for gotcha questions. These people all are very astute at answering questions (at Microsoft they prepare execs for the press by doing rude QA sessions). They'll turn your rudest question into something they want to ask. That strategy never works and usually ensures you won't be invited back. 2) Instead, ask at least one question they've never been asked before. With Gates I knew he'd been asked any question I could come up with so I turned it around: asked him what he'd ask the world's richest guy if he were in my position. 3) Do your homework. Know what your interviewee will probably say BEFORE he/she says it. 4) Listen. My best questions came AFTER they said something and I asked for more in depth. Best followup? Why do you say that? 5) If you hear jargon ask them to clarify. Often times this brings up some interesting stuff. For instance, if I were interviewing Marc Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, and he talked about the social graph I'd ask some of my listeners don't know what you mean by 'social graph', can you give us a short definition and explain what you mean by that? 6) Have a thesis for the interview. If you interview someone interesting there are 100 ways you could take the interview. I'd focus it on one theme and try to get them to tell a story with your questions. Lead them down a path. If you're asking Gates about how he took over the operating system business, for instance, I'd ask him a question about his high school/college experience, then early days at Microsoft, then ask about the DOS purchase, etc etc. 7) Have an outline of questions to ask, particularly if you'll be nervous. With Gates I started out very nervous, but then I calmed down and my brain started working again. That's when you can start having a conversation and not just going off of your prepared questions. 8) Listen, listen, listen. I always look my interviewer in the eyes and try to give them 110% of my attention. That leads to a better interview. When I'm distracted or not totally focused for some reason I find interviews don't get as interesting. 9) Start out with stupider questions just to get you both going. That's why I ask EVERY INTERVIEW who are you? and what do you do? Those two questions aren't really all that important, but they both get us going and also give your heart a chance to calm down (if you're interviewing someone famous) and also get you into the listening mode. Often times people will say something interesting in response to the what do you do? question. John Chambers, CEO at Cisco, for instance, talked about his being a father. That opened up a part of his life that makes for great conversations. 10) Listen, listen, listen. It's amazing when I listen to podcasts and I can tell the interviewer isn't really listening and isn't asking for clarification of jargon, or more depth on something really interesting that was put on the table. Can you explain more about what you mean by that? I really hate it when an interviewer is clearly NOT having a conversation and, rather, only has 10 questions that were prepared and is rushing to get through those. Use your prepared questions as a guideline, or a way to start a conversation but DO NOT be a slave to them. That's the quickest way to a boring interview that sounds stiff and stupid. (out of 600 interviews I've done I've only gone into two with prepared questions for just that reason). PR people, by the way, will ask

I liked the debate a lot. I think that having the public submit questions allowed CNN to pose questions to the candidates that they might have been too chicken to pose. It gave them some cover. It may be different people asking the questions, but politicians are still going to use their training to answer the questions in the way they want, encompassing their talking points and well-practices political stances on the issues raised, or even unrelated issues. But its a start. Here in the UK we have a TV program called Question Time, where the comments and questions from the audience are often a lot more interesting than what the panel says. The ability to create a new version of public meetings, using the internet, is certainly of interest. This CNN thing wasnt that, but it was some sort of step in the right direction I guess. A big challenge will be to change the pace of these things, theres only so much reality you can get out of short soundbites and quickly moving on to the next question, I remain fascinated by whether peoples concentration spans have been really been reduced over the decades or whether there is a real appetite for longer and deeper discussions. But it is still a filter/control from an established media company. It is still directed from up high and a select few are allowed to ask questions. On the one hand there is a M$M disrespect of user generated content unless and until it can be used as a marketing tool or as a way to look cool. Next you lock down the contributions from one web video host and then you further filter who can access by having it on cable, if your provider carries CNN, CSPAN or CSPAN2. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Jonathan Bloom [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Congrats on being asked to create the video run at your tradeshow! That was an awesome Relay For Life video. I'm no expert on video cameras, but I have upgraded my camera to better suit professional video creation and bought the only Sony MiniDV camera with mic input at an affordable price, the Sony DCR-HC96. I have yet to receive it in the mail, but it is one of the highest quality camcorders that Sony makes while still being under $1,000. I'd also recommend a good mac for video creation if you can get one. On 6/5/07, Mike Moon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: How to move from Amateur to Professional vlogger? I recently did a vlog of the Relay for Life, Canadian Cancer Society's community fund raiser here in Oshawa. I had friends and coworkers that were involved. http://moon.blogspot.com/2007/06/relay-for-life.html The link to the vlog was passed around the office and to our head office. It was viewed by one of the VPs and he's asked me to contact him about creating a promotional video to run at our trade show/conference booth. Basically the same as the video linked above, but the video would be of our staff working with the clients and a nice motivating song overlay. So I have a bunch of questions/concerns. 1) This project will not be part of my regular duties and should be billable separately then my regular low pay. How are projects billed? Hourly? For the whole project? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I suggest you write down all the steps in making the video---including meetings with client, coming up w/the idea, shooting it, editing it, touching it up again (the client will almost certainly want some tweaks), compressing it, and uploading it. Estimate how many hours for each part and add them up. Then, remembering that Uncle Sam will take 1/3, ask yourself: how much $ per hour you feel comfortable trading your time for? When you are working on this video, you will not be able to spend time w/friends, and family or do other stuff you want to do. What do you need to get paid to feel ok about that? Heck maybe you'd do it for free, because you are so amped about it. On the other hand, maybe not. This is a lot of work, and it's easier to work, when you know you are getting paid. If you underestimate the hours, then chalk it up to experience and do a more realistic estimate next time. If you overestimate...I doubt you will. Never seems to work out that way for me anyway. 2) My computer system is able to handle my vlog at it's 320x240 res, but it'll need some upgrades to handle output to DVD or at least VCD quality. And of course I don't have lights, umbrellas, mics etc etc etc. My old JVC camcorder has issues, my Xacti c40 is okay, but a little low for DVD quality video. If I can upgrade my equipment, I could do a better job. I doubt your client is going to want to foot the bill for a bunch of new gear for ya. If you don't want to spend your own money on new equipment right now (which might be a great investment), then just use what you've got. Be resourceful---use natural lighting. Pick your locations well. Another possibility is to get the client to rent gear for you. You may be able to rent stuff in your area. 3) Podcast safe music... I'm gathering that I couldn't use that as overlay within a short promotional video being used at a trade show booth? I was lucky finding that Relay for Life song, Can someone else chime in on this? I've been using my friend's music lately, so I'm a little out of it. 4) Finally... what value should I place on a 3 minute promotional video? See #1 above. Let me throw this into the mix too: you will be getting paid to learn. That's great. The main thing is that you make something you are proud of. If it's good, then it will lead to more work for you... As you get more in demand, you can charge more. At the same time, if they have the budget to pay you, you might as well tap into that and make some dough. Also, a good idea to write up a simple contract and have them sign it. Basically, you spell out what you are going to deliver them, when, for what ammount of $ and what kind of process. This way, everyone is clear on what is going on, and if that becomes unclear, then the document is there to refresh everyone's memory. If they don't want to do that, I would walk away from it. Thanks, but no thanks. As a rule of thumb, it's a bad sign when people are not comfortable putting business arrangements in writing. You want to be businesslike and you want them to be too. Hope this stuff is helpful. Other people may have different views. Tell us how it goes. I am a little apprehensive going down this road as I never put any thought about being paid for my hobby. With that said, I'd love for this to roll into a new career. :) Thanks folks, Mike http://vlog.mikemoon.net

[videoblogging] Re: Vloggercon 2007
So far everyone I've talked to in DC is very excited about doing it here. I personally think it would be mind blowing to hold Vloggercon here. Imagine hordes of vloggers making media about what they think is important in DC---interviewing congresscritters, doing features on interest groups that they believe in, doing political actions and publicity stunts, and generally raising hell. And for people who hate politics, they can make media about that, or talk about why they hate it, or what they want to change. The power of our decentralized media making coming to bear on this central node of power that is DC is fun to imagine. There are lots of great places to hold the next Vloggercon. I think the time is ripe for doing it here, what with the intersection of the elections and the sudden realization that DIY video is changing the nature of political influence. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Jonathan Bloom [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Have any of you tried bargain shopping? I'd like to throw Washington DC in the ring as a possible venue for Vloggercon 2007. So far we've had NYC (The Culture/Finance/Media capital), Bay Area (The Tech capital), why not do vloggercon in the political capital? Imagine combining Vloggercon with visits to your lawmakers, interest groups, and such and vlogging those visits? The election cycle is going to add a bunch of energy to this town too, and we can feed off and into that energy. Washington DC is all about communication. Every major interest group in the country has a presence here. Maybe it makes sense for DIY media makers to have their voice heard here too. Maybe there are some issues that we hold in common, perhaps around intellectual property, net neutrality, shield laws, broadband access? If so, a collective voice beats a solitary voice. I'm sure there are lots of great places to hold vloggercon, I just want to make a case for DC. We have an expanding community of vloggers on the ground here who I'm sure would be happy to help out in the organizing and running of the event. I certainly would love to help out. [videoblogging] Re: my two cents
1) Minority bloggers on this list can introduce themselves if they want. No surprise that the digital divide in technology and access to broadband is reflected in vloggers as in other parts of society. No doubt there are more white guys vlogging than women and people of color. That said, there are lots of vloggers of color and women vlogging. 2) To see vlogs from different parts of the world, check out vlogmap.org. You'll notice a lot more vlogs in North America and Europe than the rest of the world. Still, there's some cool stuff out there in the wider world. 3) Like with any mass of people there are many cliques, not in a bad way; that's just the way people socially organize. I think there can be a certain camaraderie among people who started vlogging around the same time. I've seen tons of people start vlogging and become active and influential in their own way. Seems pretty open to me. Some of the early people who started this list or were on it early like Jay Dedman, Michael Verdi, Zadi Diaz, and a bunch of other people have been very active in creating compelling work, writing books, speaking to conferences, teaching, etc. and remain very influential. But that doesn't mean they or anyone else control what's going on. [videoblogging] Re: Vlog 101 | Introduction
I'm not sure what business are currently vlogging, but I agree that there is great commercial potential in vlogging---something like real estate especially. You can video a walk through of a property for example. Do a video for Property of the the week or something. You might want to just go to YouTube and do a search for real estate and see if anything comes up to see what other people are doing. It might make sense to make a videoblog of your own so you can get a feel for the process of creating and maintaining one, before you start making one for a client. Here's another link with tutorials on videoblogging. It talks a little more about the context of videoblogging than http://freevlog.org, but has less concrete information about how to make one. Worth a look. http://www.projectnml.org/exemplars/06vlog Neither freevlog, nor the above link really talk about vlogging for business publicity reasons, but you can make a vlog for whatever purpose you want, including promoting your clients' busnesses. Good luck! --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, shellycellak [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello everyone, I am new to this group and to the Vlogging world. I am a publicist and am extremely interested in having my clients jump on board and start vlogging. I was hoping there would be some basic information about vlogging that you guys might be able to share with me; also, I wanted to see what sort of content businesses Vlog about? I have a real estate client as well as a grooming product client and I think this would be an amazing medium for them to reach out to their customers...we are completely bypassing the traditional blog and want to embark on the latest vlog craze. Any insight, suggestions, website's you can refer me to would be very much appreciated! Thanks! I look forward to staying abreast of all the latest in the vlog world via this group. Warm Regards, Shelly

I know that while some people like figuring everything out from scratch, lots of people like having reference materials when they are trying to learn something new. People have been teaching other people how to vlog for years. This is just another resource, and by the looks of it a useful one. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Michael Szpakowski [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Maybe it's my inner anarchist but my heart always sinks when a *right* way (or a way that can be taught) to do anything, - especially anything that was free quirky wild - develops :) Next thing you know people'll be making money out of vlogging.. michael --- jonny goldstein [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This looks like a great addition to online resources on how to vlog Worth checking out. http://www.projectnml.org/exemplars/06vlog Learn about video blogging! [videoblogging] Re: Vloggies last year, Youtubeies this year?
YouTube has an incredibly large and vibrant community. It's that critical mass that makes it so compelling for so many creators. YouTube may have it's downsides, but the interaction going on there is amazeing. I think it's a great idea to connect w/the YouTubers face to face, just to tap into some of that energy. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Irina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: where is the sf youtube meetup? i'm going to ask them about the haters :) On 1/27/07, schlomo rabinowitz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: That was really cool! I agree, these meetups are a big part of the vlogging experience for me; I've met some very special people and gotten some very strange experiences from doing this. The page mentioned a meetup happening next month here in SF. I may go and ask them why YouTube as opposed to posting somewhere else.. It would be interesting to hear their perspective on so many issues that we discuss here on the list.
