RSS isn't a particularly human-friendly format. It's meant to be
reassembled from the rss data format to a readable presenation.

HTML isn't a particularly human-friendly format either... Luckily most
browsers can render it into a form that most humans can then use.

I've made some emails to quiksilver and had a surf around the site

To be honest I think you are misreading the situation with that site.

The question ask is where you found that quiksilver link which showed
your blog contents? You found it by googling your name? I couldnt find
it in the search engines.

because as Andreas pointed out, dont think that site is caching your
blog or ripping you off. Theres simply a script on their site which
enables the contents of any other webpage to be scraped and inserted
into the body of their site.

They probably used it specifically for a completely legitimate thing,
eg contents from a partner site.

If you want, you can change the URL to any other site and it will show
the site of your choice emmbedded within their site. Doesnt mean they
are leeching your content. Their site doesnt seem to resemble anything
that would make leechng peoples blogs worth their while. If its
showing up as a search result for your name then I can understand you
being annoyed, but is this whats actually happening?

Its good to be vigilant, sites do pull such stunts, but I just dont
think thats whats happening here. And when it comes down to just
chaching content, well google definately do cache your blog.

Well in these cases the republishing would be violating the CC license
I have. So I would have a problem with it. (unless I specifically
released a site to do so). But just the pure republishing of feed
data within the the license ... no, I wouldn't have a problem with
that.

I didn't really see any adverts on that page.

It just seems to me that if you are actively providing a feed, you are
actively PERMITTING the syndication of content. You cant then say
Well I didn't want YOU to click on my feed button ... but others are
ok to do so. and expect to win any legal case.

If a person just takes my feed and follows the the spirit of the CC
license then, no I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I guess my thoughts are no harm no foul ... If you made a feed ...
it's going to feed things. So long as those things don't use it for
commercial purposes and break your cc license ... GREAT - your feed is
doing exactly what you must have expected it to do.

I have hacked my blog so that I can trace individual posts on google.

In the past few yearss I have had an ongoing problem with a troll.
Wont bore you with details but I suspect that this is the latest
offering. Ie the things been hacked purely as a form of harrassment. I
agree that quiksilver probably has nothing to do with it, which is why
I am waiting to hear from them before i do anything more.

I just asked for help with the technical details of what they had done?

There's a big difference between having your content cached by a

David i thought that this was a very interesting post. I've just read
the reply and I'm inclined to agree with the other person. Would you
like your content wrapped in someone else's advertising?

Why is a feed meant to be reassembled? Its meant to be read and its
covered by copyright for a reason. Are you saying that all RSS feeds
are free of copyright and can be reused however you please?

I understand RSS to be a technological innovation that facilitates the
dissemination of information in digital form. Its not a license to
breach copyright law.

I'm a professional artist, I exhibit internationally. Everything that
I produce has a commercial value. If a company wants to use my
creative material it comes with a price tag. That's called
intellectual property. Having said that, the blakkbyrd site is 'not
for profit' and ad free, its an arts project not a commercial
enterprise. If I were writing a blog to make money it would be very
different and the targeted audience would be very different. I'm just
not profit motivated.

I'm expecting an email from them saying that they've been hacked. I
cant find any internal links to the page or any reason for them to use
the feed.

Not that these sites couldnt take content without a feed ... but with
you actually actively providing one, you are in fact saying If you'd
like to see my content elsewhere ... here have a feed to do so.

I think its a tough sell to then say well ... except if its being
used here ... or here ... or ...

Hello,

Sorry to hear about your problems. Its understandable that some people
dont have the energy/mood to deal with ourmedia, and it is true that
we cant really complain too much as it is free and powered by love.

What alternative hosting site was recommended to you that contained
porn? Firstly the internet has a lot of porn on it and it is the users
responsibility to shield youngsters from such things. There is no one
agreed view of what 'porn' is exactly, but its usually possible to see
quite quickly whether a particular site is full of porn.

Really though I cannot stand the idea that this group is somehow
responsible for you having an ugly time because of porn. Im sorry you
feel that way, I dont understand how either this group could be
responsible, or why you would let it put you off ever doing anything
with video on the internet.

I mean, even if a free host had lots of content which you considered
adult/porn, if the service is any good then you never need to look at
that stuff. You have your own blog with no porn, and link to your
videos which are hosted by the free service.

I just want to understand more about how this thing happened, I
struggle to imagine what advice from this group led to porn ugliness.

Here here to everything Mister Steve had to said.

With OurMedia, if you are uploading large files (I would say over
5MB), they have a little software tool you can install on your
computer to upload files with. I use it, and it's nifty.

Though I am an OurMedia advocate, I will admit I have trouble from
time to time; but when I do, I just walk away from the computer for
fifteen minutes, try to upload the movie again, and it works fine.

Also, something else I found out accidentally, if your description
of your movie is less than ten words (or something like that), your
upload will fail. Not sure if it gives a proper error message or
not.
