Alright, this is extremely odd. It's happening to random people and i
ahve no idea why. I went in to the messages app, clicked compose, add
contact, then searched for my friend. When i found him, it said his
name, dimmed. Basicly, it meant it was dimmed out. So, i figured ok,

The item chooser takes the items on the screen and list them in alphabetical
order.
Just flick through the list and double tap on the one you want.

I had this problem on my iPhone 4S. Click the restore button instead of
the update button and your phone will be restored to factory settings
with IOS 9 installed. You can then restore your last backup and sync
your content and you'll be good to go.
